Health Watch: How and w When you look in the mirror, the last thing you want to see staring back at you are scores of tiny, black pores. Despite their tendency to clog, pores are actually very important, because they allow us to sweat. If we couldn’t sweat, we wouldn’t be able to maintain a safe body temperature. They also secrete a natural lubricant called sebum, which is supposed to moisturize and protect our skin. Sometimes, however, sebum ends up clogging our pores and giving us blackheads instead. So how do we keep that from happening? Most people think using steam or hot water to wash your face helps because it opens your pores, but in reality, that’s just a myth. Pores are nothing more than tiny openings in your skin. They don’t have muscles, and that means they can’t open or close. It doesn’t matter what you do -- there’s no way to change the size or your pores. There is a reason for some of the confusion, however. While hot water can’t actually change the size of your pores, it might help loosen all of the dark spots that are clogging up them up. The same goes for steam. It’s important to realize, though, that this has nothing to do with changing the size of your pores. It’s simply an effective way of cleaning them out, and getting rid of excess debris and makeup can actually make pores look smaller. So, if you want to make your pores less noticeable, try washing your face regularly, especially following any strenuous activities that might cause you to sweat excessively. Regular exfoliation can help as well If you’re wondering why the condition of your skin isn’t up to par, it might be time to take a look at how you’re cleansing it. A good soapy lathering, a scrub with an old washcloth and a quick towel dry are cleaning steps more suited to your car than to the delicate skin on your face. If you’ve had a skin care routine like that since preschool, then it’s probably time to rethink your approach. First of all, when it’s time to wash your face, grabbing whatever soap is close at hand is not a good idea. Not all soaps are created equal. For example, the skin on your armpits is a lot different from what’s on your face, so a deodorant soap isn’t really suitable to use above the neck. There are, however, a wide array of choices in facial cleansers. Your skin type -- whether it’s oily, dry, normal or combination -- should guide your decision on what to use. Some other issues you’ll need to consider include how sensitive your skin is and how prone you are to breakouts. For example, if you have extremely dry skin or a condition called rosacea, even a cleanser that seems innocuous, like hot water, might irritate your face.

why we Cleanse Our Face Next, give some thought to your washcloth. You don’t necessarily need one, and you shouldn’t be using one if you have sensitive skin. It has the potential to irritate your skin and could even make you more prone to breakouts. Water temperature is also an important consideration -- certain temperatures are kinder to your skin than others. There’s even an art to drying your face, as you’ll discover in the pages ahead. There’s more to a good face-washing routine than you might think. Read on to discover the steps that will help foster a lovely façade.

Preparing to Wash Your Face Before you begin, assemble what you need, and get your hair off your face with a headband, barrette or clip if necessary. The next step is important -- wash your hands. You come into contact with germs, dirt, oils and other substances during the day that you don’t want to transfer to your face. For most people, a twice-daily washing -- morning and night -- is sufficient. However, if your face is extremely oily, you’ll probably feel better if you wash again during the afternoon. This can be a hassle if you wear makeup, but as you’ve no doubt discovered, you’ll look better with that extra wash. Also, if you work out or sweat for some other reason during the day, you will want to gently wash afterwards. Resist the urge to use a towel to rub your face free of sweat. When searching for the perfect facial cleanser, take into account your skin type. Sensitive skin requires fragrance-free cleansers that are specially formulated to be gentle. Those with acne-prone skin should also use a gentle cleanser so as to not irritate the skin further. The water you use can also make or break your skin care routine. Read on to learn why water temperature is so important.

Health Watch: How and w For the best results, use warm, not hot, water to wash your face. Hot water might dry your skin too much. After cleansing, use cool water as a final rinse to close your pores. Along with warm water, use products that are meant for your face, not your body. Also look for cleansers that are formulated for your specific skin type. For example, if you’re prone to acne, there are a wide array of gentle cleansers and antiseptic washes available. Skin is slightly acidic, with a pH around 5.5, and the cleanser you use should have a similar pH. Soap, which is alkaline (the other end of the pH spectrum), can sometimes irritate the skin. Soap-free cleansers, on the other hand, such as beauty bars, mild cleansing bars and sensitive-skin bars will have a lower pH and are a good choice, if your skin isn’t terribly oily. A dermatologist may recommend that you use a wax- and oil-free cleanser for very dry or sensitive skin. Some ingredients that might be in this type of cleanser are glycerin, cetyl or stearyl alcohol, sulfate or sodium laurel. Another option for extremely dry or sensitive skin is a cleansing cream, which both removes makeup and cleans the face. A scrub both cleans and exfoliates (removes dead skin). Scrubs can be too harsh for many people, but there are gentler versions available. Some of the more abrasive scrubs contain ingredients such as ground fruit pits. The alternative is a gentler scrub made of polyethylene beads or sodium tetraborate decahydrate granules -- these options might work for people who can tolerate some exfoliation. Avoid facial products containing fragrances -- they are a leading cause of irritation from skin products. Fragrances are a common ingredient in body cleansers and just another reason to use a product specifically designed for the face.

Face Washing Methods Just a dollop of cleanser -- abut the size of a nickel in your palm -- should be enough to clean your face well. Beyond water and your cleanser, all you really need to wash your face are your fingers or perhaps a washcloth. If your skin is dry or sensitive, skip the washcloth. As always, no matter what you use, a light touch is best so as not to irritate skin. Use gentle circular motions when washing. Never scrub your face. It may be tempting, especially if you have acne, but scrubbing can backfire and create more problems than it solves. Your eyes deserve special care. The eyelids have the most sensitive skin of any place on your body, so it’s important to be extra gentle when washing around your eyes. Many easy-to-use and mild eye-makeup remov-

Waterproof makeup is much harder to remove, and may require you to use too much force when you’re trying to get it off. If you’d like to use more than your fingers, a washcloth is all you really need to exfoliate your skin. Products specifically designed for facial cleansing are an option as well. Woven mesh products exfoliate, and some come with a mild cleanser. Disposable facecloths are usually dry but lather up when wet. An open-weave cloth will be gentler on skin than a more tightly woven cloth. Read on to find out how to finish up your daily face-washing routine.

Drying Your Face Gentle is the word that you should use to sum up the entire process of washing your face. And like every other step of the face-washing process, drying needs to be done with a light hand as well. Pat your face; don’t rub it. Also use a clean towel so that you’re not putting bacteria or dirt back onto your newly cleaned face. After you have dried your face, don’t rush to perform the next step. If you use a topical face medication, wait several minutes. Your skin is at its most absorbent after you wash, and applying a medication too soon can be irritating. Applying medication too soon can irritate skin and help perpetuate a cycle of further breakouts. Waiting five to 15 minutes should do the trick. What you put on your face after you have gently dried it can greatly affect your skin’s overall health. Fragrances and preservatives in products are what usually cause allergic reactions. If you have a reaction to something in your facial care regimen, one or more of the following might be the culprit: • Paraben • Imidazolidinyl urea • Quaternium-15 • DMDM hydantoin • Phenoxyethanol methylchloroisothiazolinone • Formaldehyde As you can see, proper face washing involves a bit more than soaping up your face in the shower. With the proper tools, the right cleanser and the most conscientious drying

Health Watc With so much hype about new ingredients and miracle products, is the humble vitamin C being overlooked? Can it really do wonders for our skin or is it just another skincare myth?

Free radicals Produced in normal amounts, free-radicals are chemical compounds made by the body during the metabolism of food, air exposure or sunlight to not only rid the body of harmful toxins but maintain the immune system, metabolism and collagen production. However when over-produced, these unpaired oxygen electrons create destruction, killing healthy cells and damaging DNA and surrounding tissue. The atoms try to correct this imbalance by either giving an electron to another molecule, or by taking one from another molecule, thus creating a never ending game of cellular musical chairs. Compare this process to a cut apple left sitting on a bench â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the apple goes brown, or even the rust that slowly destroys a shiny piece of iron. This is happening to our skin on a daily basis! Skins affected by excessive free-radical damage display wrinkles, pigmentation, decreased elasticity and firmness. Not only are there internal alterations to the cellular membrane affecting collagen production, but the immune fighting ability of the Langerhans cells are greatly diminished creating a tired, reactive and unbalanced complexion. It has been claimed that some of the highest creators of free-radicals in the human body are sun damage and smoking. Just 1 cigarette will deplete your daily RDA of vitamin C. Stress, pollution and drugs singularly or in combination are equally destructive, with barbequed, fried or grilled food playing a surprisingly damaging role. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not all doom and gloom, whilst the damage cannot be avoided, it can be minimized.

Vitamin C however used singularly in a formulation often has its abilities questioned because of its reaction and de-generation with water. Ascorbic or L-Ascorbic Acid can fast turn into a pro-oxidant or free radical within 3-4 hours when mixed in a water based serum or solution causing the formulation to eventually turn brown. Instability of Vitamin C limits the forms in which it can be used to achieve effective results. So there we have it, for a healthy, radiant and youthful glow, get ready to get your C on!

Being ultimately responsible for the safety of their unborn child, their choices are influenced by understanding exactly which ingredients are safe to use on the skin. The truth is that there are many high quality products on the market that can be safely used during pregnancy. However the skin is a highly absorbent surface and the average woman absorbs over 2 kgs of what many formulators consider ‘questionable’ ingredients through her skin each year. It is therefore essential to cut through the media myths and understand the truth behind safe skincare during pregnancy. A lot of women find they are more prone to irritation during pregnancy so we recommend they avoid ingredients, such as alcohol based products and highly perfumed products. There are many products that we apply to the skin that have the capability of reaching the bloodstream and may be able to cross the placenta. Although many are safe there are still a number of ingredients that may be harmful to the growing baby.

Here are some broad outlines for safe skin care during pregnancy: • Ingredients not recommended for human application due to their questionable safety profile. • As a rule if it is not safe for non-pregnant women, then it is not safe for a pregnant mother. • Multiple studies have been carried out on various skin care ingredients that may be potentially dangerous. n’t I - When I am Pregnant • Phthalates • Sodium Laureth, Sulphate / SLS foaming agents (known irritants) Phthalates are fragrance additives. They are often not listed on fragrance labels as cosmetic companies are only required to list the items as ‘fragrance’ or ‘parfume’ and not the individual constituents of a fragrance. There have been studies that have shown that exposure to phthalates are often added to artificial fragrances to make the scent last longer. It is also used in hair sprays to make hair more bouncy and less stiff. A number of formulators do not use phthalates or artificial fragrance and choose to use pure essential oils as a natural fragrance. Ingredients that are specifically not recommended during pregnancy – although we are listing ingredients to avoid it is purely a cautious approach because obviously scientists are unable to test these products. • Vitamin A (Retinols) This product improves cell renewal, reducing wrinkles and reducing sun damage. Scientific studies performed years ago showed that if vitamin A is taken orally (not topically) during pregnancy, crossed the placenta and were harmful to the foetus. However there has been no sustainable evidence showing A is harmful during pregnancy. However – we believe it is better to avoid this ingredient. But please don’t panic if you have used this product as there is no documentation confirming that it will cause birth defects. • Commonly used Vitamin A ingredients: • Medical (prescription only) retinoids • Diffein / adepelene • Retin A / Renova / Tretinoin • Tazorac / tazarotene • Retinol acid

Salicylic or Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) Salicylic Acid is an exfoliating BHA and is excellent for unblocking pores and addressing skin redness. It is in the same family as aspirin, an ingredient that is not recommended during pregnancy. Studies have shown this could cause birth defects and other pregnancy disorders. Although in skin care it would be a fraction of the amount, prevention is always best.

Soy Soy is an estrogenic ingredient which can influence female levels. It is not harmful to the baby but will stimulate melasma (large dark pigment patches on the face) soy could worsen this condition. So avoid â&#x20AC;&#x201C; soy based skin care; textured vegetable protein; lecithin.

Essential oils. Essential oils are extremely powerful herbal concentrates that have been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years. It is considered safe to apply low concentrations (less than 0.3%) of essential oils in skin care products, on the face only or in rinse products such as shampoos and conditioners. Avoid essential oils on large areas and never apply non diluted essential oils directly onto the skin during pregnancy. Only essential oils that are safe during pregnancy are: Lavender; orange; ylang ylang; neroli; eucalyptus; tea tree; mauka; cypress; sandlewood; patchouli; geranium; rose geranium; chamomile; peppermint and rose.

Makeup We like to use mineral makeup because it is free from artificial colours and parabens. Natural zinc oxide will act aas a broad spectrum sunscreen (UVA and B) and this is essential during pregnancy. Mineral makeup sit on top of the skin and do not contain
