The truth behind the myths of private schools By Angela Parker For Custom Publications

I

ndiana has 829 private schools with a total enrollment of nearly 123,000 students, according to Private School Review. Despite the variety of options in private education, misinformation and misperceptions continue to circulate. What’s true and what’s false? Find out below. Myth: You have to be wealthy to send your kids to private school. Truth: Not anymore. The Hoosier State leads the country in education reform. With the recent expansion of the Indiana Choice Scholarships voucher program, low- and middle-income families have more options. Most private schools also make financial aid a priority, and many have increased their tuition-support packages to attract a more diverse range of students. Programs vary widely, so ask each school for details. Myth: You must live below the poverty level to receive financial aid. Truth: Most private schools offer financial packages and scholarships to families at a range of income levels. “The biggest misconception is that a family must be at or below the poverty level to qualify,” said Toni Kanzler, director of admissions at Traders Point Christian Academy. “Allowable income is much higher than parents realize. Some schools have flexibility within their own program guidelines to provide aid based on changes in family circumstances.” Myth: Private schools are just too small. Truth: Small classes generally mean more individual attention. With 12 to 20 students per class, teachers can provide more attention to each student, assess individual progress and allow more time for discussion and questions. As a

result, they spend less time dealing with disciplinary disruptions, which opens up more time for academic growth. Each child has a different learning style. When teachers are able to interact with students one-on-one, no one gets left behind because a concept isn’t understood. Myth: Academically, private schools can’t compare to public schools. Truth: Academic standards at many private schools rival those of some colleges and universities. Most private schools offer Advanced Placement courses and dual-credit programs, and some offer the rigorous International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. These options helps students earn college credits in high school and bypass 100-level courses. According to Private School Review, public schools must adhere to the statemandated curriculum and can’t cover certain subjects. Private schools, however, have more freedom to teach diverse material. They can individualize their curriculum and vary their teaching methods to meet students’ needs. “[Private-school] students learn how to self-advocate, ask questions and discuss topics on a deeper level,” Kanzler said. “Our graduates report that developing these skills was largely responsible for their academic success in college.” Myth: Private schools accept only super-smart kids or those who practice a certain religion. Truth: Private schools work hard to attract a diverse student body. Yes, some are hard to get into because they receive far more applications than they have spots available. The bottom line is to apply early. Most schools accept qualified students regardless of their socioeconomic

background or academic challenges. Even most faith-affiliated schools seek and welcome students of other religions. Myth: If you don’t like Latin club, choir or phys ed, you won’t have anything to do. Truth: Private schools view athletics and cocurricular activities as essential parts of a balanced education. Extracurricular activities and athletics are the first items cut when a public school’s budget shrinks. But private schools strive to offer dozens of sports and activities to suit a range of interests and abilities. Art, music, interschool and intramural sports, special-interest clubs and community service projects are some of the activities available to private-school students and their families. Myth: Students have to wear uniforms. Truth: At many private and even public schools, dress codes have replaced uniforms. Some schools still require uniforms, but dress codes have become a popular compromise. Students may be asked to wear khaki or navy pants and collared shirts during school hours, with an occasional jeans day thrown in for good behavior. “At Providence Cristo Rey High School, our goal is for all students to provide the best first impression of themselves and our school wherever they are in the community,” said Joseph P. Heidt, president. “Because our students work one day a week in professional jobs, they never know who they might meet — business executives, donors, community leaders, other parents. The uniform reminds them and others that they are college-bound achievers.” ●

Academic strength Like many high schools, Cardinal Ritter strives to prepare students for college. Even more, faculty members seek to give them a head start for greater success at the next level. On staff are five accredited professors, each of whom teaches at a local university. Cardinal Ritter therefore is able to offer dual-credit classes on campus and off — a benefit nearly 60 percent of juniors and seniors pursue. “Last year, we graduated a student who entered Purdue as a second-semester sophomore, with 49 credit hours. ark Tudor School has a reputation for offering a rigorous college-preparatory program, but it is equally successful at nurturing students from age 3 through high school. With small class sizes and experienced faculty, the teachers are able to know and understand Park Tudor students and help build on each one’s strengths. “You have to get personal with the kids to know where their strengths are and what their passions are,” said Bonnie Stewart, a fifth-grade humanities teacher. “The personal connection is one of the best things about Park Tudor. As teachers we’re expected to make those connections with kids, to get to know them and understand them.” With a history dating back to 1902 and an expansive 68-acre campus on the north side of Indianapolis, Park Tudor educates students in a tradition-steeped environment. Yet the school also has a modern mission to help students become confident and resourceful lifelong learners.

every grade level. • The acclaimed Global Scholars program for juniors and seniors. • Innovative use of technology, including a new iPad initiative. • Educational travel programs. • Community engagement opportunities. • Character education to establish the highest standards of ethical behavior, personal responsibility and global citizenship.

Students leave Park Tudor well equipped for the future. In 2012, the senior class was offered a total of more than $10 million in merit scholarships. Among all graduates, 98 percent attend one of their top three colleges of choice. “We believe in achievement and excellence, but we also understand that every child develops in unique ways and that they need mentors, advisers and support in this process,” said Matthew D. Miller, head of school. “Park Tudor is an amazing community, fully deserving of its reputation as one of the finest independent schools in the country.” ●

High schoolers are required to accumulate 20 service hours annually and a total of 80 before they graduate. In January each year, Heritage Christian juniors and seniors leave campus to participate in internships. For one week, students observe and participate in the working world. atholic schools in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis — the largest provider of faith-based education in Indiana — unite faith and educational excellence through gospel values, high educational standards, prayer and sacraments. The Archdiocese of Indianapolis serves more than 23,500 students in 58 Catholic elementary schools and 11 high schools. This includes nearly 15,000 students in 31 elementary and seven high schools in metro Indianapolis. All Catholic schools in the 39-county archdiocese are state-accredited, and most are additionally accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. All are staffed by licensed educators. Archdiocese of Indianapolis schools welcome students who qualify for the Indiana Choice Scholarships vouchers, which help offset tuition costs for families who meet the state’s financial criteria. Some families

enrolling in Catholic schools for the first time and those already enrolled may be eligible to receive Indiana tax credit scholarships through the Educational CHOICE Charitable Trust, which may qualify students for vouchers. The composite high school graduation rate for the high schools is nearly 95 percent, with almost 98 percent of graduates pursuing higher education — 91 percent in four-year colleges. The U.S. Department of Education has recognized Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis as National Blue Ribbon Schools 23 times since 2003. Since the inception of that program in 1985, 26 archdiocesan schools have earned a total of 32 Blue Ribbon designations — more than any other diocese in the nation. Some 93 percent of the schools are rated A or B by the state. Learn more about Archdiocese of Indianapolis Catholic schools at www.archindy.org/schools. ●

Cathedral High School By Angela Parker For Custom Publications

C

athedral High School was founded in 1918 to provide educational opportunities that encompass students’ spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional and physical growth. The school has been completing this mission successfully for nearly a century. “As a Holy Cross school, Cathedral is dedicated to educating hearts and minds and to building family,” said Duane Emery, vice president of enrollment management.

At a glance  Enrollment: 1,272  Student/teacher ratio: 13-to-1  Average class size: 19  Diversity: 75.5 percent Catholic, 19 percent ethnic minorities  Accreditations: Indiana Department of Education, Independent Schools Association of the Central States, North Central Association of Colleges and Schools

Academically speaking The school excels in a number of key areas. For one, Cathedral is among just 14 Indiana schools to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. To earn this prestigious degree, students must complete a rigorous curriculum that includes language, a second language, individuals and societies, experimental sciences, mathematics, computer science and the arts. Advanced Placement classes enable students to earn credit or advanced standing at most colleges and universities. Cathedral’s “service learning” approach helps students understand the connection between what they’re studying in class and life outside the school’s walls. Educators who use this method engage students in their own learning process — with extraordinary results. Cathedral’s Language Support Program meets the needs of college-bound students who have language-processing disabilities. In this program, courses are taught at the individual’s academic level with appropriate accommodations.

Lessons in service All Cathedral students develop service portfolios that include volunteer hours, reflections and service learning projects. Accruing 25 hours per year, graduates will have completed 100 hours of humanitarian service to the community. “Our vision calls for us to develop young people who will serve and lead, and that begins with students serving others on our

After class An important component of Cathedral’s holistic approach is its co-curricular activities. With more than 50 clubs and 28 IHSAA and club sports to choose from, most students participate in one or more options. “We offer as many opportunities for involvement as do the largest of schools, yet our size allows our students to be actively engaged in those activities,” Emery said.

Multiculturalism Cathedral’s CAFE Club — which stands for “Cultural Awareness Is for Everyone” — teaches students about cultural similarities and helps them become aware of frequently misunderstood differences. “Our students come from all walks of life, and they learn that the world for which we are preparing them is much larger than what they have experienced up to this point,” Emery said. “They leave Cathedral prepared for an increasingly global society as culturally competent young adults.”

CAFE Club members join in panel discussions on diverse topics and attend movie nights with films selected to inspire conversation. Diversity-focused dances, luncheons, dinners with guest speakers and recognition ceremonies serve to broaden students’ view of themselves and the world.

Affordability If private schooling seems out of reach financially, Cathedral’s tuition-assistance program may help. The school will award some $2.4 million in aid this school year. “Cathedral always has been committed to removing the barrier of cost as much as possible. No family should assume they can’t afford any private school, especially Cathedral,” Emery said. Two merit scholarships are also offered. The Presidential Scholarship is valued at $3,000 per year, for a total of $12,000; the Cathedral Scholarship is $1,500 per year for a total value of $6,000. Both are renewable annually when the student maintains a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 and takes courses at the honors level or higher. ●

 Service: Each student volunteers 25 or more hours a year and completes a senior-year capstone project.

Information nights Each fall, Cathedral High School hosts informal gatherings in current families’ for anyone who wants to know more about the school. To reserve your spot, contact Maribeth Cloud at (317) 968-7370 or mcloud@gocathedral.com.
