THE YEAR OF 52

he joy of the season comes to life on Monument Circle on Nov. 28, the day after Thanksgiving, as 100,000 spectators come to Downtown Indy for the Circle of Lights® presented by the Contractors of Quality Connection and Electrical Workers of IBEW #481. This is the year of 52: 52 years includes 52 garland strands, 52 larger-than-life decorations, 100,000+ spectators and 4,784 colored lights. It’s in the cards for a memorable holiday event. “The Contractors of Quality Connection and Electrical Workers of IBEW #481 are thrilled to be the presenting partners of Circle of Lights,” said Steve Menser, IBEW #481 business manager. “The tradition is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the standards, skill and capability of the union electrical construction industry along with our community commitment. We invite all Hoosiers to kick off their holiday celebration with us!” Each year on the day after Thanksgiving, generations of families are drawn to this beautiful centerpiece in the cultural and geographical center of the city and state. Entertainers chosen from statewide auditions will share the stage with 2014 winner of “The Voice,” Indy’s own Josh Kaufman, along with professional performers appearing at the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s IPL Yuletide Celebration. Festivities begin at 6 p.m. with the televised show running from 7 – 8 p.m. The Monument light-up Kaufman will occur at approximately 7:45 p.m. “Circle of Lights is a treasured 52-year celebration,” said Julia Saltsgaver, Quality Connection executive director. “The Contractors of Quality Connection and Electrical Workers of IBEW #481 are hard-at-work every day on key projects throughout Central Indiana. Each year, we are pleased to share this gift with our community.” And who gets to “flip the switch?” Each year, a lucky child is chosen from a coloring contest to help Santa and the Mayor illuminate the night. The stage features a Santa’s Workshop theme complete with toy soldiers and sailors, peppermint sticks, ornaments, elves in the workshop and an abundance of toys. Millions of sightseers will take in this spectacle throughout the season, lit through Jan. 10. Travelocity named the Circle of Lights® one of the top five “must-see Christmas trees” in the nation. USA Today also listed the Circle of Lights® as one the “10 Best Holiday Attractions.” Circle of Lights® is an official program of Downtown Indy which develops, manages and markets Downtown as a great place to live, learn, work and play. ● For more information about Downtown or the holidays, call Downtown Indy at (317) 237.2222 or visit www.downtownindy.org

benefits all

nce again, Monument Circle has been transformed into a shining display of holiday decor with 4,784 festive lights ready for all to enjoy throughout the season. But how does this happen and who do we have to thank for making this wonderful tradition a reality each year? Dedicated union electricians from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local (IBEW) #481 have gathered at the foot of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument to join together as volunteers. More than 200 men and women carefully and skillfully install the lights and garland that make the iconic centerpiece for the Circle of Lights®. Only one organization has taken part each and every year since 1962. IBEW #481 was first the labor crew for the electrical contractor who managed the initial development and then stepped forward as community leaders to maintain, store, install and remove the decor annually. “Thanks to the IBEW #481 electrical workers and Quality Connection Contractors who assist us each year,” said Sherry Seiwert, Downtown Indy president. “They commit their time and talent to

transform Downtown Indianapolis into a magical, holiday wonderland. We appreciate their dedication to this timeless tradition.” The goal had always been to establish a holiday symbol of peace, yet protect the mission, structure and integrity of the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Monument. Since 1994 Downtown Indy has managed the tradition. In 2004, IBEW #481 and its labor-management partnership, The Quality Connection, expanded their role to become the presenting partners of Circle of Lights® and — thanks to these partners — the lighting of Monument Circle remains one of Central Indiana’s most beloved sights. In fact, USA Today called it one of Indy’s “10 Best Holiday Attractions.” Together labor and management provide the needed expertise, highly trained workforce, safety and dedication to help build many of Central Indiana’s premiere education, health care, utility and logistics projects. The unique business relationship spans more than 50 years and represents a strong tradition of quality electrical construction, progressive labor negotiations and community service. ● For more information, visit www.qc-indy.com.

The legend of the Cherub continues

I

t was 1946. World War II just ended and thousands returned home from military service. Among them was Virginia Holmes, a prize-winning commercial artist who came to Indianapolis to start her career in the advertising department at Downtown department store, L.S. Ayres. When it came time to compose the stores 1946 holiday catalog, merchandise was in short supply. To fill the somewhat empty pages, Holmes created whimsical cherubs. The cherubs captured hearts and began an Indianapolis holiday tradition that continues today. The following year, Ayres’ 75th anniversary, called for a special addition to the store’s holiday plans. Not only did Ayre’s perpetuate the cherub’s appearance in their 1947 holiday advertising, but they also commissioned nationally recognized Indianapolis sculptor and Herron School of Art instructor, David Rubins to create a bronze cherub. The Cherub was to be placed on the store’s landmark clock, located on the outside of their building on the corner of Washington and Meridian streets.

Cherub Keeps Watch

As legend has it, the whimsical Cherub mysteriously appeared above the clock on Thanksgiving Eve 1947 to keep a watchful eye on the holiday shoppers until Santa took over on Christmas Eve. In the 67 years since, thousands have had the pleasure of seeing the Cherub perched atop the famous clock each holiday season. This tradition lives in the memories of a city and its grateful citizens. The May Department Store Co. purchased L.S. Ayres in 1986 and, in 1992, moved the Cherub to its headquarters in St. Louis. More ‘Messiah’ than you can Handel Star report

Composer: George Frideric Handel (1685-1759). Born in Germany, Handel made his name by bringing Italian opera to England and became a naturalized British subject in his early 40s. After the success of the English-language opera “Alexander’s Feast” in 1836, he began to focus on English choral music. Even though he was heavily influenced by the ornate style of Italian baroque music, after “Messiah” debuted in 1842 Handel never composed in Italian again. Wealthy and respected at the time of his death, Handel was buried at Westminster Abbey with state honors. What you need to know: “Messiah” consists of three parts, like Handel’s three-act operas, and the libretto (the words of an opera, musical or choral composition) was written by Charles Jennens using text from the King James Bible and the Book of Common Prayer. Part 1 begins with prophecy of the Virgin Birth, followed by the annunciation to the shepherds from the Gospel of Luke. Part II focuses on the Passion, Death, and Ascension of Christ and ends with the “Hallelujah” chorus, the most widely known section of the composition. Part III addresses redemption and the final victory of Christ. Handel’s vision for “Messiah” was more modest than the large productions we’ve come to associate with the music, though more groups are staging more intimate performances. In addition to the performances listed here, numerous church and school groups make it a point to include “Messiah” in their holiday programming each year. Where have I heard that? Chances are, you’ve heard “Messiah,” in part or whole, every December of your life, and will continue to forever and ever and ever. Handel’s compositions have also been featured on movies and television shows as varied as “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn,” “The Simpsons,” “Dead Poets Society,” “Scrubs,” “House, M.D.,” “The West Wing” and “The Good Wife.” If you’re a royals watcher, his coronation anthem “Zadok the Priest” has been performed at every British coronation since 1727. Kerry Jennings, assistant professor of voice, DePauw University, says: “Whether you prefer the full orchestra and large choir of the ISO and Symphonic Choir or a performance

that is, in the words of the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, ‘true to the composer's intentions: an intimate orchestra displaying the intricate vocal lines to their full majesty,’ there are plenty of performances to choose from. In fact, why choose; go see more than one. Handel wrote perhaps his most famous work in less than four weeks. The work is so well- known and be-

loved that it is common for a “performance” of this masterwork to be a sing-along. From the lyrical to the declamatory and from the defeated to the triumphant, this holiday

favorite will satisfy on every level. Originally an Easter offering, “Messiah” has become a virtual rite of passage for singers and audiences during this holiday season, and music lovers from all faith traditions will have ample opportunity to hear this work in all its glory in the coming weeks.” Classical Music Indy, a classical music radio program syndicate and music advocacy group, and The Indianapolis Star have partnered to bring you classical music coverage in a new way. Using expert voices from around the country as well as informed perspectives from local audience members and experts, we hope to highlight the best classical music programming in Central Indiana and make it interesting and accessible to the widest possible audience. Visit www.classicalmusicindy.org to learn more. Kerry Jennings is assistant professor of voice at DePauw.

AN ADVERTISING SUPPLEMENT OF THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR

Inspired at the close of World War II after nearly two decades of planning, the lights first appeared on Monument Circle in 1962. What followed was a simple program with a few speakers. Today it is one of our state’s most celebrated holiday traditions. As the organizations that have taken part each year for 52 years and on behalf of all who have cared for this tradition, IBEW #481 and Quality Connection hope this beloved symbol of peace offers a joyful start to your holiday season!
