All-Star Educators

Each of this year’s Academic All-Stars was asked to write an essay describing the school employee who most influenced his or her academic performance. Read about the outstanding Indiana educators who are encouraging and inspiring bright minds.

Tim Kelaghan Mr. Kelaghan exhibits a genuine excitement and amazement at the power of calculus, which he effortlessly draws out of his students as well. He constantly refers to mathematics — in particular integration — as an art, making each one of us an artist and allowing each problem to mean more than just numbers and letters. He has instilled in each one of us an admiration for the exact things that previously seemed meaningless.”

— Eddie Barks, Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School

Diane Karst As the head of the math department as well as my geometry and pre-calc teacher, Ms. Karst has been vital in my choice of engineering as a career. In the real world, the methods to find mathematical answers are never spoon fed. It is the same way with her classes. By junior year pre-calc, I was astounding college engineering students by showing them the homework for that class. At least twice a week, I was in her room before or after school for help. Ms. Karst has not only always been there to help me, but all of her students.

— Nathan Grabner, Bishop Luers High School

Paul Jones I always had problems paying attention in school. I frequently went ahead of the lesson because I was bored by the rate of instruction. I honestly tried to pay attention, but my eyes could never hold. Around eighth grade, I started sitting in the back of the class so teachers wouldn’t notice. Finally that year in my pre-algebra class, I had a breakthrough with my teacher, Mr. Jones. He even assisted with further comprehension of mechanisms’ functions and provided reason why they worked. Rarely do teachers understand that regulating the way students learn inhibits understanding of material.

— Victoria Sedwick, Crispus Attucks Medical Magnet High School

Doug Klumpe I took my first math class from Mr. Klumpe in seventh grade. I’ve since taken four years of math with him and participated in extracurriculars he has coached. From the first day of class, I immediately noticed Mr. Klumpe’s dedication to his teaching; he refuses to do a mediocre job and expects the same of his students. His classes are known for being challenging and demanding, but especially rewarding. Mr. Klumpe’s devotion to excellence in his teaching has influenced me to approach my work with the same attitude.

— Seth Benjamin, Harrison High School
