Laura Rasmussen

Dave Watt Music blaring, students enter Mr. Watt’s AP U.S. history class, preparing for another infamous test. These exams are known to be the hardest in the school, yet students still take the class in order to have Mr. Watt as a teacher. Using stories from his days working at a steel mill, gas plant and welding company, he engages the class in discussion, challenging students to think critically. Beyond rote memorization, I developed a strong work ethic, a thankful attitude for the history of our nation and an ability to articulate my opinions.

Mrs. Rasmussen taught us lessons that transcended any one subject. I remember when she had us watch a TED talk about “power poses” as a way to pump ourselves up for the AP exam. When it came to the day of the exam, I remember seeing kids taking wide stances and throwing their shoulders back, just like we had been taught. Mrs. Rasmussen was a great person to talk to outside of class. She was a great listener whenever I needed to talk about college worries or anything else.

Lee Banitt

Charity Coffman

I have never had a teacher who showed more enthusiasm and effort than my AP chemistry teacher, Mr. Banitt. The way he operated his classroom environment amazed and inspired me. When we had time to work on challenging problems in class, he would approach each student individually to see how he could help.

— Nicholas Perkins, Zionsville Community High School

Paula Boenigk In the theory of knowledge class, Ms. Boenigk presented the discussion of how the brain works. Through this class, she has taught us the importance of not simply accepting information as fact, but also analyzing multiple sources. This has been one of the most important aspects of my education, because the skills she has taught me do not simply apply to one subject.

Mrs. Coffman was my French teacher for three years, but she advised and educated me in many more areas of life. She has led me into viewing the world through new eyes while not swaying me towards her own personal opinions and political convictions. I believe that she has done this because she honestly feels called not only to teaching, but educating students in a much broader sense. Never before have I met a person who has such a passion for bringing knowledge to young lives. Last summer, I took a trip to France and England with Mrs. Coffman and some fellow students. I learned that outside of the classroom she is the same caring, inspiring individual that I have admired for many years.

— Neil Reinke, Muncie Central High School
