500 Festival & Indianapolis 500® Education Program, presented by Indiana University Health
Indiana fourth-graders put the pedal to the metal The 500 Festival and Indianapolis 500® Education Program, presented by Indiana University Health, strives to educate and foster creativity in thousands of Hoosier fourth graders through historical, social and economic significance of the 500 Festival, Indianapolis 500® and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway®. This Indiana Academic Standards-based curriculum is designed to coincide with Indiana’s fourth-grade focus on state history. The program provides teachers with lesson plans, activities and a corresponding DVD to teach students about the 500 Festival, Indianapolis 500® and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway®. In addition, all classrooms that participate have the opportunity to attend one of eight subsidized Study Trips to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway® in April or May. During the course of the Study Trip, fourth-grade classrooms travel from station to station to learn more about IMS and the Indianapolis 500®. Stations include, but are not limited to: A scavenger hunt in the IMS Hall of Fame Museum™ ■ A tour of the Pagoda and Victory Podium ■ Seeing an IndyCar up close and personal ■ Being inside the Medical Hospital that is used throughout the month of May. ■
There are two new stations at this year’s Study Trip. The Driver Equipment station shows students the ins and outs of a driver’s helmet and what drivers need to wear on race day to stay safe. The Numbers of the 500 station encourages students to think quickly on their feet as they will be given math equations to solve through a Jeopardy game. In 2014, more than 25,000 students will participate in this free program and nearly 9,000 will attend a Study Trip to IMS. Since its inception in 2004, more than 200,000 Indiana fourth-grade students have participated in this Program. The 500 Festival Foundation generates funds to support youth and educational programs of the 500 Festival, such as the 500 Festival & Indianapolis 500® Education Program.
