Dear Friends: The signs of a struggling economy are all around us. Homelessness is on the rise. In fact, there was a 78% increase in the number of homeless families in Indianapolis last year. In a time when the situation can seem bleak, School on Wheels is here to provide hope and help to the youngest victims of homelessness – the children. We are pleased to share with you some good news! We have met the increasing need for our services and provided more hours of tutoring to homeless children than ever before. We recruited, trained and retained more volunteers than at any other time in our history. We couldn’t have done it without the support of our volunteers, donors, colleagues and friends. Sally Bindley Founder and CEO The Mission of School on Wheels is to enhance and enrich educational opportunities for school-aged homeless children. Our Vision is to break the cycle of homelessness through education. School on Wheels is Indianapolis’ answer to increasing educational opportunities for homeless children in order to create the economic opportunities necessary to break the cycle of homelessness. Since our founding in 2001, School on Wheels has: [ provided over 21,000 hours of tutoring. [ trained over 1,100 community volunteers. [ provided tutoring to over 2,500 school-aged homeless children. [ distributed 1,000 backpacks filled with supplies. [ distributed nearly 4,000 articles of clothing for school uniforms to homeless children.

Tutors in Action Program

recruits and trains dedicated community volunteers to serve as tutors. [
provides free daily tutoring and academic mentoring to homeless children.
[ operates in every Indianapolis family homeless shelter and one elementary school at no cost to the shelters or families. [ distributes backpacks, school supplies and school uniforms to homeless children.

works with homeless parents to equip them with the skills and resources needed to support their children’s academic careers.
