Letter from the Founder/CEO and Board Chair Dear Friends of School on Wheels, The past year was one of momentous growth. Our tutoring program expanded into two new locations, reaching beyond Center Township for the first time in our history. We introduced tutoring to previously unserved children through inventive programming in schools and provided more tutoring hours than ever before. Our focus on parent resources deepened and we helped a record number of School on Wheels parents become their child’s best educational advocates. Yet these amazing successes don’t even begin to describe all that we achieved. What we truly achieved — with your generous financial gifts, thousands of volunteer hours and unwavering support from our community partners — was a program where our students felt safe, supported and empowered to be successful. Each of you helped us provide stability in the lives of children experiencing homelessness. Your support allowed us to work with the children in our city who need it most and help them achieve academic success. One School on Wheels student put it best this year in a note she wrote to us that simply said, “Thank you for your kindness.” Thank YOU for your kindness, your continued support, endorsement, friendship and commitment. For the kids,
Sally Bindley Lori Gooding Founder and CEO Board Chair

Our Mission Our mission is to provide one-on-one tutoring and educational advocacy for school-aged children impacted by homelessness.
Our Vision Our vision is to equip children impacted by homelessness with the educational tools necessary to achieve success in life and break the cycle of homelessness.
3
Overview help prepare students academically. MartH, developed for kindergarten and 4th grade students, uses art as a vehicle to support and strengthen math skills being taught in the classroom.
After-School Tutoring Through Tutors in Action, more than 400 trained volunteer tutors provide over 7,700 hours of tutoring to children in grades K – 12 who are experiencing homelessness throughout Indianapolis. These children include those living in shelters and those considered “hidden homeless” – children who are doubled up with other families, living in motels or other transient locations.
It’s a WRAP! Our summer program, It’s a WRAP! (Writing, Reading, Art and Performance), helps combat summer learning loss. Offered to children ages 5-18 at Salvation Army Barton Center during the month of July, this program provides a unique outlet for creativity and self-expression while reinforcing key academic concepts for each grade level.
Students and tutors work together on completing and understanding homework, as well as enhancing grade-level skills through a range of educational activities aligned with core academic concepts. We provide after-school tutoring in emergency and transitional shelters and in public schools. The over 350 children who attend tutoring each year represent 70+ schools, demonstrating the widespread presence of homelessness in our city.
Parent Programs Through Ignite Learning, School on Wheels Program Coordinators hold office hours and workshops for the parents of the children in our program. We introduced Parent Connections as part of this program during the 2014-2015 school year with support from The Glick Fund, a fund of Central Indiana Community Foundation. This program offers a series of workshops that focus on how to communicate with a child’s teacher, who to contact within the school system with transportation issues, and other critical skills to help parents continue to advocate for their child’s education well after they are stably housed and have moved on from our program.
Curriculum-Based Tutoring MartH (Math + Art) and STAR (Striving Toward Academic Readiness) are innovative school day, lunchtime programs at select elementary school partners. These curriculum-based programs target grade-specific concepts to demonstrate a progression in learning. STAR, developed for kindergarten, first and second graders, focuses on core skills such as print and number concepts, social and emotional development and early literacy skills to
