EPOXIES STR - General Purpose Resin

General Purpose Epoxy has excellent pot life and cure-time control. When selecting a hardener consider the minimum temperature expected during application and the required pot life. Combine different System Three General Purpose Epoxy Hardeners to provide a continuous range of cure times. Refer to The Epoxy Book to make a proper selection. Recommended Uses: System Three General Purpose Epoxy works great for wood construction and repair, for gel coat blister repair, and for general fiberglass repair. Use at a simple 2:1 volume ratio with any of the three hardeners. Use at temperatures as low as 35°F with no limitations on humidity. The medium-low viscosity of System Three General Purpose Epoxy allows for use “as is” for coating and fiberglass work. T-88 Structural Epoxy Adhesive

T-88 is a high-performance, non-brittle, two-part epoxy adhesive designed to give superior results under adverse conditions. The adhesive may be used without modiﬁcations in normally ﬁtted joints, and will cure in any thickness without shrinkage. T-88 is clear amber and becomes virtually invisible when varnished. T-88 exhibits outstanding adhesion and permanence on a wide variety of materials, and is endorsed by leading designers, builders and organizations. Recommended Uses: For well over 25 years T-88 has been the most widely used structural adhesive for marine and general woodworking use in the United States. Mixed at a 1:1 by volume ratio, T-88 will cure at temperatures as low as 35°F. When fully cured, it is unaffected by water, oil, kerosene, and many other chemicals. It will not stain wood and is immune to fungus and rot. T-88 is unique in that it may be applied to damp wood, provided it is worked well into the surface. Clear Coat Laminating Resin SB-112 Surfboard Resin

SB-112 is a clear, almost water white high-modulus epoxy system, UV-resistant for maintaining longer surface gloss. Unlike many epoxy systems, SB-112 will cure to a clear, glossy, blush-free surface. Recommended Uses: SB-112 is specially formulated for use in building and repairing sail and surfboards over polystyrene cores. It can also be used for coating and composite laminating. SB-112 is unique in that polyester resins and gel coats may be bonded to it without the use of “tie-coats”. We recommend that polyester be bonded onto freshly sanded SB-112 epoxy within 48 hours of cure. Clear Coat is an extremely low viscosity, water white, “penetrating” epoxy system. Clear Coat cures to a brilliantly clear, very tough finish without the usual “amine blush” associated with some epoxy resin films. Clear Coat contains no volatile solvents. Recommended Uses: Clear Coat is ideal for clear coating wood, and the wetting out of fiberglass cloth for bright finished boats. Use as a build coat for clear linear polyurethane or varnish coatings and as a penetrating first coat for blister repair on fiberglass boats. Use also for those applications that require a long pot life and low viscosity. Use Clear Coat as the sole epoxy system to make wood strip canoes and kayaks. Protect Clear Coat from moisture during cure to avoid water spotting. EPOXIES About The SilverTip Marine Epoxy Series

Using the latest composites technology System Three Resins has developed the next generation of epoxy products – The SilverTip Marine Epoxy Series. Until now the approach to using marine epoxy was to combine one general-purpose resin with a variety of hardeners and obnoxious fillers to produce the various adhesives, coatings, putties and compounds needed in boat construction and repair. This “chemistry set” approach could give good results but was all too often messy, inconsistent and unpredictable. With the SilverTip Marine Epoxy Series, System Three has eliminated the use of a general-purpose resin, and instead designed a separate resin system for each specific application found in boatbuilding and repair. This makes sense since the performance requirements of an adhesive are not the same as those for a coating or compound. All of the fillers have been properly selected and correctly combined with the resin, eliminating guesswork and trial and error mixing. The results are products that are consistent and exceptionally easy to use. Plus the performance of each product in the SilverTip Series is optimized for its specific application.

SilverTip Laminating Resin

SilverTip Laminating Resin is a medium-low viscosity, liquid epoxy resin system that has been optimized for coating and reinforcing fabric saturation in wood-composite boatbuilding. It will outperform any other product in these applications. SilverTip Laminating Resin is designed for use with fiberglass, Kevlar, Dynel and graphite as well as on bare wood. It has superior wet-out characteristics with little tendency to foam or trap air. Both the resin and hardener are nearly colorless and are used in an easy 2:1 volumetric ratio. SilverTip Laminating Resin cures to a brilliant blush-free film with either the fast or slow hardener eliminating secondary bonding concerns as experienced with other epoxies. The working time is longer than most boat building epoxies without extending cure time. The cured film is tough and resilient with better heat resistance than other epoxies cured at room temperature. Fillers, wood flour, and bulking agents can be combined with SilverTip Laminating Resin, however, we suggest using the other members of the SilverTip Series for adhesive, filleting and fairing applications. Recommended Uses: SilverTip Laminating Resin has been formulated as an optimized system for coating and fiberglassing wooden boats, the repair of fiberglass boats and for use with carbon fiber sporting goods & autobody parts. Application: Use at a simple 2:1 volume ratio with either the fast or slow hardener. Use at temperatures as low as 35ºF with no limitations on humidity. Even at lower temperatures and higher humidity this resin will not blush on curing. SilverTip QuikFair

QuikFair is a lightweight, microballoon-filled, fast-curing two-part epoxy fairing putty with excellent moisture resistance. The two color-coded parts have a non-sagging, butter-like consistency and are easily mixed to form a third color. At 25°C (77°F) QuikFair is sufficiently cured to be hand-sanded in 3 hours or machine sanded in 4 hours. This allows the user to apply three coats each 24 hours in a standard eight-hour shift or six in a round-the-clock basis. Recommended Uses: Use QuikFair on both fiberglass and wood-epoxy boats above or below the waterline. Quick Cure 5

Quick Cure-5 is the standard quick setting “ﬁve minute epoxy” system. Mix at a 1:1 by volume ratio. Quick Cure is ideal for all small jobs requiring a strong bond and rapid cure. Quick Cure is highly water resistant but not waterproof. Quick Cure is quite thick, but is easily measured by squeezing equal sized lumps from the convenient application bottles. Recommended Uses: Use Quick Cure for installing bungs, repairing missed staple holes prior to ﬁberglassing, “tack welding” wood, and for those other glue jobs, which require a fast cure. 205 Fast Hardener

WEST SYSTEM epoxy is a high-quality, two-part epoxy formulated and manufactured by Gougeon Brothers, Inc. It bonds to fiberglass, wood, metal, fabrics, and other composite materials and is easily modified for a wide range of coating and adhesive applications. It is used for construction and repairs requiring superior moisture resistance and high-strength, and is especially suited for marine applications. WEST SYSTEM products provide a complete system of epoxy resin anhardeners, dispensers, fillers, additives, reinforcing materials, application tools and instructional publications.

WEST SYSTEM epoxy is designed for boatbuilding and repair by experienced builders and formulators who know the engineering and the chemistry required for today’s high-performance composite structures. During more than thirty years of developing marine epoxies, we have continued to formulate, test and improve WEST SYSTEM resin and hardeners to create the most reliable and well balanced epoxy system available today. Potential resin and hardener formulas, ingredients and combinations are tested to compare fatigue strength, compression strength, glass transition temperature, and peak exotherm. Additionally, qualified samples are tested for hardness, tensile strength, tensile elongation, tensile modulus, flexural strength, flexural modulus, heat deflection temperature, impact resistance and moisture exclusion effectiveness. Thorough testing such as this insures that any change in a formula will improve one or more of a product’s characteristics without diminishing any characteristics.

105 Epoxy Resin

105 Resin is the base material of the WEST SYSTEM family of products, on which all of the WEST SYSTEM compounds are built. The resin is a clear, pale yellow, low-viscosity liquid epoxy resin. Formulated for use with WEST SYSTEM hardeners, it can be cured in a wide temperature range to form a high-strength solid with excellent moisture resistance. It is designed specifically to wet out and bond with wood fiber, fiberglass, reinforcing fabrics and a variety of metals. An excellent adhesive, 105 will bridge gaps and fill voids when modified with WEST SYSTEM fillers and can be sanded and shaped when cured. With roller applications, it has excellent thin-film characteristics to flow out and self-level without “fisheyeing.” The resin cures clear so that you can achieve a natural finish when coating with varnish. It has a relatively high flash point and no strong solvent odor, making it safer to work with than polyesters. Resin viscosity is approximately 1000 cP (centipoise) at 72°F (22°C). WEST SYSTEM epoxy resin and hardeners are packaged in three “Group Sizes.” For each container size of resin, there is a corresponding sized container of hardener. When purchasing resin and hardener, be sure all containers are labeled with the same Group Size letter (A, B or C). The 300 Mini Pumps can be configured to fit anyGroup Size. If the containers are kept sealed when not in use WEST SYSTEM resins and hardeners should remain usable for many years. Over time, 105 Resin will thicken slightly and will therefore require extra care when mixing. Hardeners may darken with age, but physical properties are not affected by color. Mini Pumps may be left in containers during storage. It is a good idea, after a long storage to verify the metering accuracy of the pumps and mix a test batch to assure proper curing before applying epoxy to your project.

205 Fast Hardener is a medium-viscosity epoxy curing agent. It is used in a majority of situations, at lower temperatures and to produce a rapid cure that develops its physical properties quickly at room temperature. When mixed with the 105 Resin in a ﬁve-part resin to one-part hardener ratio, the cured resin/hardener mixture yields a rigid, high-strength, moisture-resistant solid with excellent bonding and coating properties. properti Not intended for clear coating.205 Hardener must be mixed in the correct ratio of 5 parts by weight of 105 Resin to 1 part by weight of 205 Hardener.

206 Slow Hardener

206 Slow Hardener is a low-viscosity epoxy curing agent for use when extended working and cure time is needed or to provide adequate working time at higher temperatures. When combined with 105 Resin in a ﬁve-part resin to one-part hardener ratio, the cured resin/hardener mixture yields a rigid, high-strength, moisture-resistant solid with excellent bonding and coating properties. Not intended for clear coating.206 coating. Hardener must be mixed in the correct ratio of 5 parts by weight of 105 Resin to 1 part by weight of 206 Hardener.

207 Hardener

This hardener was especially developed for use with WEST SYSTEM Brand 105 Resin in coating applications where an exceptionally clear, moisture-resistant, natural wood finish is desired. Cures to a light amber color, similar to traditional spar varnishes. An ultraviolet inhibiting additive improves the resistance of a WEST SYSTEM 105/207 mixture to sunlight, but the cured epoxy surface will still require the additional protection of a quality UV-filtering varnish. 207 is designed to self level for smooth finishes, and to wet-out and bond fabrics. Although it provides good physical properties for general bonding applications, it is more difficult to thicken and less cost effective for this purpose than 205 or 206 Hardeners. It’s also used for laminating veneers where bleed through at joints may be exposed to sunlight.207 Hardener must be mixed in the correct ratio of 3 parts by volume of 105 Resin to 1 part 207 Hardener.

209 Extra Slow Hardener

209 Extra Slow Hardener is formulated for use with WEST SYSTEM Brand 105 Resin for general coating and bonding applications in extremely warm and/or humid conditions or when extended working time is desired at room temperature. Provides approximately twice the working time of 206 Slow Hardener. Forms a clear, amber-colored solid with good physical properties and moisture resistance for bonding and coating applications. Not intended for clear coating.209 Hardener must be mixed in the correct ratio of 3 parts by volume of 105 Resin to 1 part 209 Hardener. Note:Not all products available in stock at all locations.

EPOXIES 300 MINI PUMP SET 300 Mini Pumps are designed for convenient and accurate metering of all Group Size A, B and C WEST SYSTEM resin and hardeners. They mount directly on the resin and hardener containers and eliminate the mess involved with measuring by weight or volume. 300 Mini Pumps are calibrated to deliver the proper working ratio with one full pump stroke of resin for each one full pump stroke of hardener. The 300 Mini Pumps Set contains one resin pump and two hardener pumps. 105/205-206 pumps deliver approximately 0.8 ﬂ oz of resin/hardener with one full stroke of each pump. 105/207-209 pumps deliver approximately 0.9 ﬂ oz of resin/hardener with one full stroke of each pump. As packaged, the pumps are ready to install on the Group Size B containers. A package of extension tubes for Group Size A containers is included with the set. Group Size C extension tubes are included in the 105-C Resin and in the 207-SC or 209-SC packages.

FILLERS Adhesive Fillers vs. Fairing Fillers

Fillers are used to thicken the basic resin/hardener mixture for specific applications. Each filler possesses a unique set of physical characteristics, but they can be generally categorized as either Adhesive (high-density) or Fairing (low-density). Adhesive filler mixtures cure to a strong, hard-to-sand plastic useful in structural applications like bonding, filleting and hardware bonding. Fairing filler mixtures cure to light, easily sandable material that is generally used for cosmetic or surface applications like shaping, filling or fairing.

If necessary, you can combine different group sized-as long as all of the pumps have a yellow head. To avoid confusion and possible off-ratio metering, 300 Mini Pumps have yellow heads, which should not be used in with any older pumps with a white head (301 and 303 pumps). Made of durable polypropylene, the pumps give years of dependable service. Read and follow the priming, ratio veriﬁcation and operating instructions that come with the pumps.

LARGE CAPACITY PUMPS 306-25 Metering Pump

For metering larger quantities of 105 Resin and 205 or 206 (5:1 ratio) Hardeners. The 306-25 Pump will reduce mixing time and waste on large projects. Industrial Formulators’ epoxies are formulated systems, meaning that we start with basic epoxy resins manufactured by large chemical companies and modify them to make them suitable for the required end use. Yes. The preferred method is with paste pigments. You can add these up to 10% by weight of the Part A resin. You can also use universal paint colorants from the paint or hardware store, but only up to 2% by weight of the resin.

Some FAQ’S About Epoxies The Part A resin has hardened and turned white. Can I still use it?

Yes. The white solid or haziness is a mass of resin crystals. Crystallized resin will not cure properly. These can be melted by heating the container to 120°F. The resin will clear up and be as good as new.

The Part B hardener is darker in color than when I bought it. Can I still use it?

Probably. Hardeners yellow and darken over time due to contact with air and sunlight. This does not affect their performance. To satisfy yourself do a small test and make sure it cures properly.

The only way to speed the cure of our epoxy resin products, once they’ve been applied, is to heat the room or the area that your project is in. Every 18°F increase in temperature cuts the time it takes for the resin to cure in half.

Which laminating resin is easiest to use for ﬁberglassing?

There are two main things to consider: how the resin wets out the cloth and how well is ﬁlls the weave. The thinner resins, like Clear Coat, will wet cloth easier, but take more coats to ﬁll the weave. With thicker resins, like System Three General Purpose, the opposite is true.

Will the ultimate strength of an epoxy coating be affected if it gets cold while it’s curing?

No. As long as the epoxy is completely cured, the physical properties will not be affected.

What stains can I use before applying epoxy?

Dye stains are preferable because they leave no surface ﬁlm. But in general, any stain can be used so long as it is completely cured before applying mixed epoxy resin. However, it is prudent to do a test by staining some scrap and then applying epoxy. Check for appearance and bonding.

What can I use as a material that epoxy won’t stick to? Epoxies will not stick to mold-release compounds recommended for use with epoxy, and polyethylene sheeting, like disposable paint tarps and sandwich bags. Epoxy does not stick to the shiny side of packaging tape or parafﬁn wax.

I made a small batch and after a week it has not cured. What happened? It is difﬁcult to measure a batch of resin and hardener less than three ﬂuid ounces by volume. If you need to make a small batch, measure it by weight. System Three offers a small digital scale perfect for this use.

I made a large batch and found a few areas that are still sticky after most of the surface is cured hard. What happened? The material was probably not thoroughly mixed and unmixed material was scraped from the container onto the surface. When mixing always be sure to mix from the bottom to the top and scrape the sides of the container and the stick. Experienced users dump and scrape the mixed material from the ﬁrst container into a second and then mix again. This totally avoids the problem described above. Painting Tips Hint: Masking often seems like a tedious job but the time and money saved in the long run makes it a step that should not be skipped or botched. By masking, we are protecting the surrounding surfaces from overspray and possible scratches due to sanding. Certain parts on the car, such as mirrors, door handles or windows, should be masked properly but other parts such as moldings, lights or emblems can be removed. Rust is often found behind these removable parts. Before sanding, we recommend to protect the edges of the surface to be sanded with many layers of masking tape. This « thickness » will protect the immediate surrounding areas. Hint: Always use premium quality paper. We recommend sanding papers that are specially designed for refinishing purpose. Their special coating is more uniform. They will last longer, provide a more efficient sanding and prevent premature loading. No matter which type of sanding is done, it is always important to use a sanding block for an optimal result. Sanding with your hand will cause sanding lines resembling the fingers of your hand! With a broom, push Stardust onto the surface of the spill. Then, using a firm swirling circular motion, with the broom’s bristles perpendicular to the surface, mix Stardust into the spill until the liquid is absorbed. If you did not use enough product, and it becomes saturated before the spill is completely absorbed, reapply Stardust to the spill area and repeat step two. You will be amazed as the spill disappears, and the area is left completely clean and dry. Stardust is available in a handy 3 lb pack and as a 25 lb bag.

TO USE STARPOWER : 1. Refer to the Dilution Chart on the container to determine the level of strength needed for the type of cleaning to be done (e.g. greasy engines, machinery, rust stains). Note that the 1:2 ratio is the most common one recommended. 2. Spray STARPOWER on the dirty area and wipe the dirt and grime away with a cloth. When cleaning a larger area, using a brisk circular motion (Turbulence) works best. 3. For hard surfaces like metal or concrete it is usually best to use a 3M-type scrub pad instead of a cloth (Turbulence). Then rinse the area with water or wipe it with a cloth to remove the loosened substance that was being cleaned. 4. For really stubborn areas, it may be necessary to let them soak in STARPOWER for a while (Time) before they can be cleaned. In some cases a less diluted solution will be necessary. 5. For painted surfaces, test a small inconspicuous area first to determine the colorfastness of the paint. In some cases, color will show up on your cloth, but it may only be due to the removal of an outer layer of faded and oxidized old paint, revealing the bright fresh paint beneath the surface. On painted surfaced, rub gently, especially if you are using a scrub pad, because you could remove the paint from the surface if you rub too hard. If painted areas are soaked with STARPOWER for an extended period of time, it is likely that the paint will be broken down and removed. Therefore, do not let this happen unless you wish to remove the paint. 6. When removing graffiti from a painted surface, rubbing too hard will remove the graffiti, but may also remove the paint from the surface. Keep in mind that the graffiti and the surface will be cleaned layer by layer, like the layers of an onion. So watch the progress of the graffiti’s removal closely to prevent the removal of the paint underneath the graffiti. 1 Gallon Concentrate

Sustain Finishes - Boat Cleaning Tips

It’s not necessary to clean with soap every time you wash your boat. Before and after every outing just rinse the boat with freshwater to remove surface dirt and towel (or squeegee) dry. The natural abrasiveness of soap, regardless of the “safe” product claims, does break down wax. Under normal circumstances a wax lasts 2 to 4 months. Scrub it with soap every week and its life is much shorter. When you do need to use soap, use a diluted solution. On mornings with heavy dew, dry surfaces using an Absorber or mop and you’re good to go. On clean, dry surfaces, liberally apply a spray-on wax. This restores the gloss and renews the UV inhibitors so the sun doesn’t begin to break down the protective layer of polish. Salt is hard on metals and will, over time, oxidize aluminum and rust stainless steel. Routinely rinse off salt from railings, anchor chain, the windlass and other metal hardware. Proper cleaning helps to protect your boat from elements that spoil its appearance and otherwise might damage ﬁnishes and ﬁttings. With the right techniques this is achievable so you spend more time on the water and less time cleaning.

Always use a boat soap. Leave the Cascade, Fantastic, Palmolive, Simple Green et al at home. Household products may work great but they can damage gelcoat if allowed to dry on the surface. Most of these products are highly alkaline with a pH of around 12 to 14. They can completely strip wax layers and even etch the gelcoat (known as alkaline streaking), if allowed to dry. Neither acidic nor alkaline, most soaps formulated for marine use have a neutral pH of 7 and are safe to use on gelcoat surfaces.

Soaps come in liquid and granular form and some liquids are concentrated. Concentrates are nice because you use as much as you need to get the job done. Rinse ﬁrst - Boat Cleaning Tips Cleaning rule number one: Thoroughly rinse the boat with plenty of water to remove any loose grime and grit that may be clinging to the surface. Begin rinsing at the highest point on the ﬂying bridge or cabin top and work down, moving from the bow to the stern so the water drains out naturally.

If it’s not stated on the label don’t assume it’s safe; household soaps definitely remove wax. As for cleaning power, boat soaps work equally well. A high-sudsy soap doesn’t clean better and, with suds, less is best. We associate suds with cleaning power but covering the surfaces to be cleaned with suds obscures the dirt that needs your attention. One-step wash and wax products apply an additional barrier that, depending on the amount of rainfall and sunlight your boat withstands, gives up to two weeks of protection. These waxed soaps make surfaces easier to clean and slightly enhance surface gloss. For the final rinse, remove the nozzle and turn the hose pressure down to about 50% so water gently wets the surface. Spraying surfaces with a blast of water won’t remove the wax affect but you’re adding more water to the surface than necessary and this extends the drying time. To remove wax you’ll need a heavy duty acidic cleaner. Use full strength or dilute following the manufacturer’s instructions. Some products will damage painted surfaces so, again, check the label and look for “paint safe.” Always follow with a thorough scrubbing with soap and water and rinse well to remove all residue, which contaminates surfaces and leaves a hazy finish after waxing. If the gelcoat is in good condition, follow with a wax or polish or apply a rubbing compound on faded surfaces.

Add some boat soap to your bucket and using a sponge, wash mitt or brush wash surfaces, working again from the top down. Rinse the sponge or cleaning mitt in the bucket often. Don’t let any soap dry on the surface. Keep a hose nearby to rinse frequently with plenty of water. For the ﬁnal rinse, remove the nozzle from the hose and allow the water to sheet off the surface. Less water hastens the drying time. Cleaning is simple. If, when using a wash mitt or brush you’re sweating and applying a lot of elbow grease, you’re working too hard. Harsh scrubbing forces contaminants into the surface, which can scratch the ﬁnish. Let the cleaning products do the work for you.
