eral scientific accomplishments. Dr Kalam has received international recognition for his contributions in the field of science. His honors include America's top engineering prize, the Hoover medal, for his work in public service contribution as an engineer. He is particularly known for his work on the ballistic missile and space rocket technology, which have brought India into modern space research. With an educational background in aeronautical engineering, Dr Kalam played a pivotal role as Project Director to develop India's first indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle in 1980. He also contributed significantly to the development of several missiles, including Agni and Prithvi, through his role as Chief Executive of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (I.G.M.D.P). Additionally, he has been Chancellor of the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology and was the Scientific Adviser to the Defense Minister and Secretary, Department of Defense Research & Development throughout the 1990s. IAC will host a public reception in Dr Kalam's honor on April 24 at the Oak Brook Marriott Hotel.

CHICAGO: The Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago (HTGC), in cooperation with Consulate General of India, Chicago organized a spectacular cultural dance event "Inspiring India" by Tanushree Shankar on Saturday, March 12 at HTGC temple auditorium. With a brief prayer and condolences for recent Japan earthquake and tsunami victims, Amrish Mahajan, Chairman, Public Relations, HTGC welcomed Tanushree Shankar and troupe. The program began with an invocatory item "Durga Vandana" in praise of Goddess Durga, followed by "Vrukshya Vihar"(depicting the naturalistic beauty of the forests), "Maitri" (the celebration of womanhood), and "Pratiksha" (the longing for oneness). The show concluded with the feature presentation "Chirantan", where the dancers portrayed "Hope and inspiration". With narration by Amitabh Bachchan and Tanushree

tranquility. The performance was a model of grace and fluidity. All the movements were crisp, yet smooth and agile. The hand gestures, or mudras, were clean and precise. The movements of all the dancers were well-coordinated. The dancers' expressions were particularly striking, due to their extraordinary animation and liveliness. The vibrant music complemented S. Shankar's mesmerizing choreography. The program emceed by Rupamati Acharya and Dr Rohini Udupa concluded with Amrish Mahajan thanking Tanushree Shankar and group for the wonderful performance and appreciating Consulate General of India, Chicago for coordinating the artists' visit. The next coordinated event "Dusshasana Vadham" a Kathakali dance performance is set for March 27. Mahajan also pitched for generous donation to support hosting of such events with great artists.

NEVADA: Nevada Assembly will open with ancient Hindu prayers on April 25 in Carson City. Rajan Zed, President of Universal Society of Hinduism , will recite from Rig-Veda, the oldest scripture of the world still in common use, besides lines from Upanishads and Bhagavad-Gita (Song of the Lord), both ancient Hindu scriptures, in Sanskrit and then provide translation in English. Zed earlier opened Nevada State Senate meeting on February 14, Las Vegas City Council on January 19 and Sparks City Council on January 25 with ancient Sanskrit prayers. He also delivered the opening prayers in Clark County Board of Commissioners, Carson City Board of Supervisors, Henderson and Boulder City

UN official lauds Sikh Environment Day India Post News Service

NEW YORK: Olav Kjorven, Assistant Secretary-General and Director of UNDP, the UN Development Program sent greetings to Sikh community worldwide on the celebration of the Sikh Environment Day. In his message to EcoSikh, Mr. Kjorven said, "In honor of the Seventh Sikh Guru I am sending my most reverent wishes and congratulations for the events planned to celebrate Sikh Environment day on March 14th." Olav Kjorven as head of UNDP has worked with many world religions to develop their own plans to combat global warming and to save environment. He was present when Sikh leaders launched EcoSikh and a five year Sikh plan in 2009 in New Delhi. This plan was then presented to UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon in Windsor
