Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Buy a meat thermometer One of the easiest ways to take the guesswork out of grilling is to use a meat thermometer. By knowing internal temperatures in a few seconds, grillmasters can have juicy foods that are cooked to the correct temperature so foodborne illnesses do not become a problem. Cooking by sight is inaccurate, as the outside of the food may look well done even though the inside is still pink. Thermometers allow cooks to avoid cutting open foods to check doneness, spilling out tasty juices in the process. continued on page 11

Preheat and prepare the grill Be sure to preheat the grill to between 400 F and 500 F. Use a nonstick spray on the grates while the grill is heating. This way foods will not stick and create a mess that will ultimately require considerable cleaning.

MAY 25 - JUNE 7

People rely on indoor and outdoor grills to prepare foods all year long. Not only can menu items made on the grill taste delicious, but they also may be healthier than foods cooked via other methods. When done correctly, grilling is a versatile way to cook tasty foods relatively quickly. One of the challenges of cooking over high, open heat is the difficulty in determining just how long to keep foods over the flame. Take them off too soon and they may be undercooked. Wait too long and items may be dry and charred. Use these tips to make grilling easy and safe.

Grilling safe and healthy

continued from page 10

The U.S. Department of Agriculture advises on minimal internal temperatures for meats and poultry (https://www.fsis.usda.gov/wps/portal/fsis/topics/food-safety-education/get-answers/food-safety-fact-sheets/safe-food-handling/safe-minimum-internal-temperature-chart/ct_index). Keep in mind that food continues to cook when it is taken off the grill. Therefore, removing a few minutes before it has reached a certain temperature is ideal. Fish is fast Don’t avoid grilling fish because of its delicacy. Using wood planks or any of the newer grilling gadgets available can keep flaky fish from falling through the grates. Plus, fish is an ideal go-to when one is really short on cooking time. If necessary, experiment with varieties of fish that are durable, such as salmon or tuna.

Leave an empty spot Have an unheated area of the grill or one that is set to a low temperature so there is somewhere to move food if a flare-up occurs or if something is cooking too fast. This is also a good spot to finish foods that may need a little more time over indirect heat — such as burgers that require melted cheese.

Hot Dogs, Hot Dogs... Get Your Dogs Here! Memorial Day Special SaturDay 10am-6pm

Use sauce at the end Avoid charring foods by using sugary sauces toward the end of cooking. Otherwise, the sauce can burn quickly and contribute to potentially carcinogenic char. Grilling can be made easier with a few tricks of the trade. The results will be delicious, healthy and safe to enjoy.

Be aware of ticks when enjoying the outdoors When the weather warms, yards beckon, hiking trails look even more inviting and even a patch of grass can be a welcoming respite. Lots of fun can be had outside, but caution is needed. While this time of year is prime for outdoor frolicking, it’s also a time when tick populations explode. Ticks are small crawling bugs in the arachnid (spider) family. There are hundreds of different kinds of ticks in the world. The Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation says there are at least 40 species of tick in Canada alone. The creature subsists on meals of blood from a host animal. Ticks can carry bacteria, viruses and other pathogens that can cause serious disease in humans and other animals, states LymeDisease.org. Ticks feed and mate mostly on deer, but rodents, birds, lizards, and just about any other animal can be a host to these non-

discriminatory bugs. Animals carry the diseases, which are then passed through the tick to others. Disease-spreading ticks can be extremely hard to detect because of their diminutive size, especially when they are in the larva or nymph stages. Therefore, preventing tick bites remains the single-best way to stay ahead of Lyme disease and other illnesses. Understanding tick habitats and behavior can make it easier to avoid them.

3 ways aging drivers can see better at night (MS) — Many drivers are less comfortable driving at night than during the daytime. Despite the fact that far more vehicles are on the road during the daytime than at night, studies have shown that approximately 65 percent of accidents occur at night. Many of those accidents and much of the discomfort drivers feel at night can be traced to inadequate lighting. Visual acuity, which is directly related to the amount of light provided by the environment, can be diminished by as much as 70 percent at night. The human eye is not adapted for nocturnal vision, so when driving at night, drivers often experience a loss of depth perception and difficulty distinguishing between colors as contrasts fade away. This is especially problematic for aging drivers, a segment of the driving 220 6th St Clymer population that is on the 724-905-8086

rise. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 36.8 million licensed drivers age 65 and older on the road in 2013, a figure the NHTSA estimates will increase to 57 million by 2030. As drivers age, the lenses of their eyes become more opaque, reducing the amount of light their eyes can receive. For example, at age 40, the average driver may already need twice as much light than a driver at age 20. At age 65, that need can climb to a whopping eight to 10 times more light (see graph). But aging drivers need not sacrifice their nocturnal independence just to stay safe behind the wheel. The following are three ways aging motorists can improve their nighttime visibility. 1. Upgrade headlights. According to a recent study from the automotive club AAA, the halogen headlights found in more than 80 percent of vehicles on the road today fail to safely illuminate unlit roadways, even when vehicles are moving at speeds as low as 40 miles per hour. Upgrade headlight bulbs are designed to put more light on the road, helping to combat the natural deterioration of vision that so many aging drivers deal with on a daily basis. Philips Upgrade Headlight Bulbs can deliver up to 100 percent more light on the road than standard halogen bulbs, greatly improving nighttime visibility. 3. Maintain headlights. Often overlooked, headlight maintenance is another way older drivers can counter the effects that aging has on their nocturnal vision. Inspect headlights regularly, checking to make sure that plastic headlight lenses have not turned yellow or foggy. Designed to restore plastic lenses in less than 30 minutes, the Philips Headlight Restoration Kit quickly and effectively combats clouding on headlights as well as taillights, turn signals and reflective lens covers, helping aging drivers see more clearly at night while also making vehicles more visible to other drivers. 2. Give fellow drivers more room. In daylight hours, drivers might feel comfortable giving the vehicles in front of them a certain amount of room. Aging drivers can expand that comfort zone between themselves and fellow drivers at night. This extra space can help all motorists feel more comfortable, and it gives drivers more time to react if the drivers in front of them swerve or brake quickly.

The pros and cons of trading in and selling your vehicle to determine the value of their vehicles. Prospective sellers also can describe the condition of their vehicles to get the most accurate estimate possible with regard to the value of the vehicle. Private sales also require devoting some time to getting the vehicle a tune-up and washing and detailing it. Plus, a seller will have to sort through the possible buyers and confirm their legitimacy and ability to pay. Trading in Trading in an old car has many benefits, including the simplicity of such transactions. Dealerships will assess the value of the vehicle and offer a trade-in price. That money is then applied to the purchase price of the new car. Trading in may not prove as lucrative as selling the vehicle. That’s because dealers have to leave room

When the time comes to upgrade to a new car or truck, buyers may ponder which offers more benefits: trading the vehicle in at the dealership or selling their vehicle privately. Each option has its share of pros and cons. After reviewing their options, shoppers can make an informed decision regarding which path to follow.

‘00 Toyota Camry XLE

Selling it yourself Selling a vehicle privately takes more effort than simply bringing it to the dealership and trading the vehicle in. However, the extra legwork and research can be worth it financially. The work involved may deter some people, but if money the is end game, it’s worth the effort. The first step is pinpointing an asking price. Automotive websites and even local newspaper classified sections can give would-be sellers an idea with regard to how much their vehicles might be worth on the open market. Kelley Blue Book (kbb.com) enables sellers to plug in details such as options on the car and mileage

for mark-up so they can make a few dollars on the trade-in. Yet, a number of people feel the convenience of driving into the dealership with one car and then leaving in a new one exceeds the financial benefit of selling the car privately. Drivers must also recognize that there can be tax advantages to trading in compared to selling their vehicles. Sales tax is only applied to the difference between the trade-in and the new-car price. So, if one were to get $10,000 for the trade-in and is spending $20,000 on the new vehicle, he or she only pays sales tax on $10,000. Deciding whether to trade in a preowned vehicle or sell it can be a difficult choice. Drivers must decide how much work they are willing to do if they want to sell privately or if they prefer the convenience of trading in.

Begin early in the morning so that shoppers will not need to disrupt their schedules much to visit neighborhood sales. A 7 a.m. start time will attract the early birds and free up most of the day.

ple. Any money earned is an added bonus. Statistics collecting resource Statistics Brain says that roughly 165,000 yard/garage sales take place in the United States each week. Nearly 700,000 people purchase something at those sales, leading to millions of dollars exchanging hands. Yard sales may seem straightforward, but there are a few strategies to ensure such sales go boom rather than bust.

able for passing motorists. Place ads in local newsp a p e r s , online and on grocery store bulletin boards, and use social media to spread the word of the sale even further. Be sure to give ample notice of the sale so that shoppers can mark their calendars. Make for easy browsing Arrange goods for sale into categories and pay attention to presentation. You may generate more sales if items are easy to see and browsing is made easy. Put items you expect to draw the most attention popular near the end of the driveway to entice passers-by. A neat and inviting appearance also may convey that you’ve taken care of your home and your belongings. Play some music and offer light refreshments to create a convivial atmosphere.

Price things reasonably It’s tempting to overprice items, but a good rule of thumb is to mark things for one-half to one-third of the original value. Be open to negotiation, but try to haggle with a “buy one get one” approach, rather than marking down the price considerably. After all, the goal is to get rid of as many items as possible, with financial gain a distant second. Yard sales are popular ways to make money and clear homes of unwanted items. Hosts can make their sales even more successful by employing a few simple strategies.

fects of drought. Drought and dry periods need not ruin homeowners’ lush lawns. But lawn care enthusiasts will have to alter their lawn care routines when conditions are dry.

PA019645

“Drought” can be a four-letter word to many lawncare enthusiasts. Homeowners who put in the hours and hard work to create beautiful, lush lawns can see the fruits of all their labor gradually disappear when drought sets in. That can be both frustrating to homeowners and detrimental to long-term lawn health. Treating lawns during drought or dry periods can be tricky, as some homeowners may be forced to adhere to water restrictions established by their local governments. Still, there are some ways to obey the law and still help lawns withstand drought and dry periods. • Postpone fertilizer applications. Fertilizers are designed to help grass grow, but growing grass needs water it won’t have access to when water restrictions have been put in place. If a lawn needs to be fertilized during drought or dry periods, homeowners should consult with lawncare professionals, who may have experience applying fertilizer during drought. Professionals also may have access to more fertilizing products than homeowners will find at nearby lawn and garden centers. • Pull weeds by hand instead of applying herbicides. Herbicides are substances used to destroy unwanted vegetation, such as weeds. When applied

during droughts or dry periods, such products can make it harder for grass to overcome weeds. Instead of applying herbicides during drought or dry periods, pull weeds by hand. Doing so can address a weed problem without harming the grass. • Water early. Water restrictions might not completely deny homeowners the right to water their lawns. Rather, such regulations restrict how much water homeowners can use to treat their lawns during drought or dry periods. Watering early, ideally between the hours of 4 a.m. and 8 a.m., ensures as little water as possible will be lost to evaporation and as much as possible will find its way onto the grass and into the soil. During periods of drought, temperatures tend to be at their highest in mid- to late-afternoon, so change automatic sprinkler timers if they are set to water during these hours. • Adjust lawnmower blade height. Grass grows more slowly during drought or dry periods. As a result, homeowners won’t need to mow as often during such times as they would when conditions are more favorable. But lawns may still need to be mowed during drought. When mowing, leave grass on the longer side. Mowing stresses grass, which is already under considerable stress during drought. Pests can be a nuisance. Whether they're scampering about the yard while you try to entertain guests or invading your home's interior when the weather outside pushes them indoors, pests are almost always unwelcome guests. Many homeowners address pest problems with pesticides. But the Environmental Protection Agency notes that there are other ways for homeowners to control pest problems around their homes. Though sometimes pesticides prove the only way to effectively eradicate pest problems, the following are some more eco-friendly alternatives homeowners can try before opting for pesticides. • Cut off food sources. One of the primary reasons pests infiltrate a home is to get food. Homeowners who don't create opportunities for pests to eat might be able to prevent infestations without the need for pesticides. When storing items in a pantry, make sure all boxes and bags are tightly sealed. Many pests can easily access food sources stored in cardboard boxes, so homeowners with roach or ant infestations might want to consider storing cereal, sugar and flour in sealable plastic containers that such pests cannot penetrate.

Alternatives to pesticides

• Keep a tidy house. Pests do not only access food sources stored in the pantry. A dirty house is also very inviting to pests, who can feast on crumbs left behind on floors and tables. Don't leave crumbs lying around on tables or countertops, as such scraps might not seem like a meal to you but will serve as a great source of food for hungry pests. Sweep and mop kitchen floors to remove any traces of food that might have fallen on the ground while you were cooking, and be sure to vacuum around the table where you and your family eat dinner night. • Don't be sunk by your sink. A dirty sink is another attraction pests can't resist. If your sink does not come equipped with a garbage disposal, install a food trap on the drain so food is not washing down the drain, where it can stick to the side of the pipe and attract

pests. Dirty dishes should be cleaned immediately as well. If allowed to sit in the sink for hours or overnight, dirty dishes will attract hungry pests, so clean the dishes and then give your sink a quick cleaning once the dishes have been washed. • Stay dry. Water is very attractive to pests and roaches in particular. A very small amount of water is all some roaches need to feel satisfied, so all surfaces and sinks should be kept dry. Drain water from the sink, as a sink full of water is attractive to roaches because they know how to swim and can use water as a food source. Leaky plumbing should also be addressed, as leaky faucets, hoses and pipes may create a pestfriendly environment that's difficult to eradicate once it's established. • Address leaks around the house. A pest infestation also may be a byproduct of leaks around the house. Cracks or openings along the baseboards or behind the sink can create a point of entry for hungry pests, so seal any such cracks or openings as soon as possible. Pests also may enter a home through holes in window screens or march right in through the front door if there is any space between the bottom of the door and the continued on page 21

Planting a vegetable garden can be a worthwhile endeavor for anyone who has an available patch of land. Gardens need not take up much space, and even apartment dwellers without yards can plant small gardens in containers they place on terraces or window boxes. Although establishing a garden is easy enough, beginners may make a few mistakes along the way. Those who already have paved the garden way before can offer novice gardeners some worthwhile tips. One of the first decisions novice gardeners must make is which crops to grow. This will help determine how much land you will need and which supplies or soil amendments will be necessary. According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, a common error for beginners is planting too much and more than anyone could ever consume, so it’s best to start small and be proud of that small garden. Plants such as peppers, squash and tomatoes produce throughout the season, so you may not need many plants to provide for your needs. Less prolific plants may require a greater investment to produce a similar yield. Locate your garden in an area that gets adequate sun. Many vegetables need between six and eight hours of sunlight per day. Without enough light, they

Veggie garden tips for beginners will not bear as much and could be susceptible to insect infestation. Vegetables and fruit also need plenty of water because they’re not very drought-tolerant, so keep gardens close to a water source.

Another good tip is to locate the garden near the house or barbecue grill. This way you can easily harvest fresh produce and use it when cooking. Soil preparation is also key. Till the soil and remove debris like rocks, sticks and hard clumps of dirt. Work with organic material, such as manure or compost. Apply mulch after planting to help maintain moisture levels in the soil. Plant the tallest crops at the rear of your garden bed. Work forward with shorter crops. Try to leave a foot or more between planting rows. It’s easy to get a garden started and enjoy fresh food for many months to come.

Breathing easier about CPAP treatment People who routinely toss, turn, snore, and wake up feeling less than refreshed in the morning may have more to worry about than simply not getting a good’s night sleep. They may be experiencing a relatively common yet largely undiagnosed condition that can contribute to long-term risk for various diseases. Sleep disorders have become a significant health issue. Sleep apnea, which affects an estimated 22 million people in the United States, can contribute to difficulty sleeping. Sleep apnea causes periods defined by an inability to breathe. The American Sleep Apnea Association says sleep apnea comes in three types: obstructive, wherein a blockage of the airway is usually caused by the collapse of the tongue or soft palate; central, when the brain fails to signal muscles to breathe; and complex, which is a combination of the two conditions. Over time, sleep apnea can be a risk factor for heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and other serious conditions, says the Cleveland Clinic. That is why symptoms that may begin as mildly agitating snoring sessions should be brought to a doctor’s attention. When sleep apnea is identified, one of the more successful treatments is widely referred to as “CPAP.” According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, CPAP, or continuous positive airway pressure, is a treatment that uses mild air pressure to keep breathing airways open. A CPAP machine includes a mask or other device that fits over the nose or nose and mouth. The mask is connected to a machine via a tube, through which humidified air is blown. In cases of obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, CPAP can reverse the complete blockages or narrowing of upper airways. When used correctly, CPAP may be the only treatment necessary to address OSA. Sleep apnea is usually confirmed by an overnight sleep study known as a polysomnogram, or PSG, conducted in a lab or at home. According to the American Sleep Apnea Society, a PSG is often followed by with a CPAP titration study. Individuals who will require CPAP can choose among masks

and equipment that meet the prescription and maximize comfort levels. Many people become accustomed to using CPAP devices right away, while others may need a month or more to transition. Problems like uncomfortable masks or air leakage can be tweaked until users grow comfortable.

CPAP needs to be employed under the guidance of a sleep specialist. The mask and tube should be cleaned daily and be replaced when necessary for the treatment to work effectively. More information about sleep apnea and CPAP is available at www.amsleep.org.
