WHERE IN VIRGINIA IS JAMES MONROE?

virginia I jane and marvin bond

Where in Va. is James Monroe? We associate George Washington with Mount Vernon, Thomas Jefferson with Monticello and Poplar Forest, and James Madison with Montpelier; all imposing Virginia homes of early presidents. But, quickly now, what place do you associate with America’s fifth president, James Monroe? Now, during the bicentennial of Monroe’s inauguration and first term, we did a little digging. There are actually a number of places you can visit with direct ties to Monroe. While his birthplace home is long gone, you can visit a small visitor center at the Monroe farm near Colonial Beach from Memorial Day through Labor Day. (monroefoundation.org/monroe-birthplace)

Monroe’s law office

Not far away, in Fredericksburg, is the James Monroe Museum and Library, operated by the University of Mary Washington. The museum is on the site of James Monroe’s law office and holds numerous exhibits and artifacts, including the desk at which it’s said he wrote the Monroe Doctrine. Through this fall you can see a special exhibit of clothing and accessories used by the Monroes. Director Scott Harris said the museum has “the largest collection of items relating to (Monroe) you’ll find anywhere,” adding that the collection has local, state, national, and international significance. An online exhibit uses an interactive map to tell the story of Monroe’s 1817 trip through the northern states, and Detroit and Ohio. He was Making Family Memories the first president since George Washington to Plan a day in Harrisonburg, Virginia! visit all the states. what the president did while visiting the cities and towns along the route. (jamesmonroemuseum. umw.edu/exhibitions/monroe-1817-tour) The annual Welsh Festival at the museum, this year on Sept. 16, is sponsored by the Fredericksburg Welsh Society and honors Monroe’s Welsh heritage on his mother’s side. The festival, set for 11:00am–5:00pm, offers traditional music, dancing, food, and arts and crafts featuring vendors with Welsh connections. (welshfred.com) “This is the only Welsh festival on the East Coast,” said Harris.

A place he called home Monroe was friends with his presidential predecessors Jefferson and Madison and his plantation home near Charlottesville is not far from Monticello or Montpelier. While it is not as grand as those estates, it is filled with items from Napoleonic France thanks to Monroe’s service abroad. Indeed, the Monroes were influenced by their love of all things French as they refurbished the White House after it was burned during the War of 1812.

Originally named Highland, the estate was called Ash Lawn-Highland by a later owner, but it reverted to simply Highland in 2016. (highland.org) Among the rooms of interest is the study, which contains a Louis XVI desk similar to the Monroe Doctrine Desk at the Monroe Museum. Outside, the kitchen courtyard and the boxwood garden, with its white oak “witness tree” that dates to Monroe’s time, are especially interesting. Online exhibits on the election of 1816 and the archaeological and architectural research can make a visit more meaningful. Recent discoveries have changed previous theories about the property and are important parts of today’s tours.

Fortress Monroe The fourth site on our tour of Monroe’s Virginia is Fort Monroe, one of the coastal defense forts established under a plan proposed by President Monroe in the aftermath of the War of 1812, and the largest stone fort ever built in America. The huge fortress and its moat gained prominence as a Union stronghold in Confederate territory during the Civil War. Gen. Benjamin Butler refused to return escaped slaves who made it to the fort, creating the precedent for the Union army to provide protection to slaves. At the end of the war, Confederate President Jefferson Davis was held at the fort. The site is now a national monument and you can visit the free Casemate Museum inside the fortress for interesting exhibits on the fort’s history and to see the cell where Davis was kept. (fmauthority.com/visit/casemate-museum) Some 200 years ago, Monroe became the last of the Virginia revolutionaries to serve as president. Though he was less well-known than others, these sites help fill that knowledge gap with interesting, contemporary exhibits and activities.

Highland

James Monroe’s Highland was the fifth president’s home, not far from Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello and James Madison’s Montpelier.

Over the past couple of decades, the month of August changed for many Americans. Once the prime vacation month fueling the largest amount of gasoline consumption during the year, August now heralds the start of the school year in most areas. With the start of school comes the numerous sports and other activities that seem to occupy families for much of the year. Increasingly, this means there are bargains to be had and activities to be enjoyed as destinations large and small work to lure travelers. Check out your favorite beach destination and you might find some surprising rates and packages. August also is a great time for planning family or couples getaways for the fall, and this issue of Recreation News is full of ideas to help. This month’s North Carolina section showers you with ideas about the Outer Banks, including a huge new water park, a wild horse tour in Corolla, and festivals that stretch into the fall. Rates on vacation homes can drop by 60 percent or more, making a getaway even more affordable. We also look at the huge whirligigs going on display in a park in Wilson, N.C., and celebrating the state’s official folk art creator and native son, Vollis Simpson. Finally, enjoy a taste of a unique culinary creation, the sonker, along Surry County’s Sonker Trail. In Pennsylvania, we’ll give you the inside scoop on touring Gettysburg and enjoying the unspoiled scenery of Raystown Lake from a boat or a bike. And, in Indiana County, we’ll preview the Northern Appalachian Folklife Festival. You expect a university town to have culture, but the art offerings in Morgantown, W.Va., will surprise you. While you probably associate Crisfield, Md., with crabs, we’ll show you the Trail Mix, which packages opportunities for paddling, biking, and walking in some great locales. Our music festival column highlights a new take on an old standby. The L’il Margaret’s Bluegrass Festival in St. Mary’s County, Md., has a new promoter who’s updated the annual August event. In the Old Dominion, we trace the connections of America’s fifth president to his native state — places you can visit as we mark the bicentennial of his first term in office. As always, we’ve done a lot of the work, so start planning that getaway today!

Get creative with family time

People are like water. No, I am not referring to the scientific percentage of water that makes up the human body, I am referring to the principle of physics — water takes the path of least resistance. A lot of people these days speak of the younger generation’s fixation on screens, such as the phones they can’t put down, or the video game monitors that hypnotize them for hours on end. The brain seeks stimulation and pleasure, and of course much of that can be found on a screen. A message from a friend, a video showing something cool, a game challenge checking how quick and clever you are. We know the brain is wired for reward. In fact, many of these screen addiction issues, like other addiction issues, are born of the brain’s rapid reward cravings. Think about it. You get a text-instant reward — someone is thinking of you, a question is answered, and opportunity arises. Video games are essentially a non-stop bombardment of the brain with rewards. But not all of these screen issues are that shallow. Some are deeper. Imagine watching the big screen and

seeing majestic nature shots of places you can’t get to. Once again, it’s a reward. And then there are items such as virtual reality headsets or skydiving simulators that offer the pleasure center reward without any of the risk. Parents these days often complain about their children being addicted to the screen. In addition to the physical problems created by a lack of activity, there are also social issues and challenges. These include a lack of dialogue at the dinner table, lack of interest in other activities, and essentially being in a digital cocoon. How do you counter that? You fight fire with fire. The screen is stimulating the brain, so you need to stimulate it even more. Take a vacation somewhere. Get the kids on board with the project first by offering some suggestions. “How about a trip to the beach?” “Let’s go to the mountains and see eagles and take a train through the valley.” “Check out some of these places and let me know your interests.” “Let’s visit places where cool things happened (such as Jamestown, Philadelphia, an old mining town, etc.).” The bottom line is to fight stimulation that has negative effects (lazy screen time) with stimulation that has positive effects (maybe waterskiing on Deep Creek Lake). Let them take pictures and videos. As an added benefit, some remote cool places don’t have signals, so you can use the phone for photos,

Celebrate the end of summer with Fayetteville festivals and trails Fayetteville, N.C., has a long military history that dates to Colonial days. The city near the I-95 corridor was named for the Marquis de Lafayette, Gen. George Washington’s close friend and ally who fought on the patriots’ side during the Revolutionary War. The Frenchman’s visit to his namesake city in 1825 is commemorated with a birthday celebration every September. While it’s best known today as the home of Fort Bragg, Fayetteville was in the spotlight during the Civil War. On April 22, 1861, North Carolina troops seized the Fayetteville Arsenal. On March 11, 1865, Confederates attacked Union forces at the Battle of Monroe’s Crossroads, but the city of Fayetteville surrendered to the Union Army that night. And, on March 15–16, 1865, 30,000 Union soldiers defeated 8,000 Confederates at the Battle of Averasboro. You can visit the battlefield and its museum in nearby Dunn, N.C. In 1918, Fort Bragg was established as an artillery training ground. It has grown to be the largest military installation in the world, with more than 50,000 soldiers stationed there.

Festivals galore The Airborne and Special Operations Museum at Fort Bragg celebrates the 77th anniversary of the U.S. Army’s airborne forces and the 17th anniversary of the opening of the museum Aug. 19. Featured events include a jump, static displays of

current weapons and vehicles, and World War II reenactors using equipment from the period. The museum’s exhibit gallery focuses on the history of the U.S. Army Airborne and Special Operations from 1940 to the present. Before They Were Airborne, a limited-time gallery exhibit, commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Airborne Division with World War I artifacts, including a uniform worn by Cpl. Alvin C. York, a Medal of Honor winner. (asmof.org) In addition to its military heritage, Fayetteville has a diverse population and rich history that give it an international flavor. This is reflected in many of its fall festivals. The 27th Greek Festival will draw thousands over the weekend of Sept. 8–10. Held at Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church, it features Greek food, music, dancing, arts and crafts, and a marketplace. With a nod to Fayetteville’s French namesake, the 10th annual Lafayette Birthday Celebration, hosted by the Museum of the Cape Fear on Sept. 8–9, features a guided tour of the Lafayette Trail, a French music concert, French wine tasting, birthday cake, and an ice cream party. Davis Memorial Library at Methodist University will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Lafayette Collection with the unveiling of a recently donated letter from Lafayette. The ceremony will be followed by a live concert of classical and modern music by French composers at Hensdale Chapel on campus. (lafayettesociety.org) More than 200,000 visitors are expected to attend the 39th annual International Folk Festival, celebrating the city’s cultural diversity, the weekend of Sept. 22–24. Festivalgoers will be treated to a “trip around the world” via a Parade of Nations and an international café, plus a Fourth Friday event, music, dance, arts and crafts, and children’s activities.

A horse is a horse ... unless Headline it’s a wild one on Corolla He has an unassuming name, but right now Gus is the most important horse in Corolla. We finally find him standing in the shade under the deck of a vacation rental home, munching on some sea oats. Gus has a lot resting on his beautiful dark brown shoulders. His ability to father a foal could ultimately save the entire herd, which has become so inbred that scientists fear for its survival. “Come on, Gus, you need to go out and meet the ladies,” said our guide, Gary, getting a laugh from four of us seated in the beach cruiser from Back Country Safari Tours. (outerbankstours.com) This is no “canned” tour with lethargic wildlife. The Back Country guides clearly love the beautiful horses, and this comes through when they relay the juicy drama of stallions fighting, mares shifting alliances, and babies born in the midst of it all. We come upon an egret perched on a horse’s back. “They exist in a symbiotic relationship,” Gary explained, “and these horses

trust egrets so much that they’ll let them pick a bug right out of their eye.”

Speaking of trust You need a high level of trust to be hooked into a hang glider with an instructor, towed up to 2,000 feet by an ultralight plane, and released back to the airport for a graceful landing. But it’s worth it for the views of the Currituck Sound, the ocean, and the surrounding countryside. Most of all, it’s worth it for the feeling of flying. An aviation buff’s dream, it’s an adventure steeped in history. After all, this is where the Wright brothers made aviation history in 1903. Kitty Hawk Kites also offers many other activities besides hang gliding — standup paddleboards, kayaks, jetpacks, fly boards, parasailing, even a mermaid school — appealing to anybody keeping a recreational “bucket list.” (kittyhawk.com) continued on page 10

Also on Roanoke Island, The Lost Colony outdoor drama retells the story of Sir Walter Raleigh’s settlement in dramatic fashion. The drama concludes its 80th season this month. Accommodations along the Outer Banks tend toward vacation homes or condos. Stuart Pack, of Resort Realty, said the price points change significantly after Labor Day. “A five-bedroom house might drop from $4,500 to $1,500 per week,” he said, noting that the full use of the facility with kitchen, washer/dryer, and linens gives it a home feeling. While the fall weather on the Outer Banks is temperate, down at Hatteras, it can be six degrees warmer than in Kitty Hawk and Corolla.

Vollis Simpson’s whirligigs Headline lure visitors to Wilson, N.C. The late Vollis Simpson did not achieve international acclaim until long after he retired from his labors as a farmer, farm equipment repairman, and part-time house-mover in eastern North Carolina. With time on his hands, he began to wonder what he might do with the old machine parts, industrial salvage, and other objects he had collected over the years. Rather than sell the metal for scrap or haul it to the dump, he decided to build huge windmills, not for use around the farm, but as objects of art. Using highway and road signs, industrial fans, bicycles, ceiling fans, mirrors, stovepipes, Ibeams, pipes, textile mill rollers, ball bearings, aluminum sheeting, steel rods, various types of wood, rings, pans, milkshake

mixers, and other objects, he created the whimsical whirligigs. The large moveable sculptures also reflected his experiences in life, including his stint in the Army Air Corps during World War II. After the whirligigs became an obsession with Simpson, he worked on them seven days a week until his health began to fail in his 94th year. Over the years, curious travelers from around the world showed up at Simpson’s farm to see his gigantic works of art, which resemble weathervanes but are 50 to 60 feet tall.

Vollis Simpson Park

Vollis Simpson’s fanciful whirligigs are North Carolina’s official state folk art.

Some his admirers purchased title of I author the unique creations and placed them in parks and in museums, including the American Folk Art Museum in New York and the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore. They even found homes at the site of the Atlanta Olympics and in Moscow. When Simpson died in 2013, the New York Times deemed him “a visionary artist of the junkyard ... one who made metal scraps into magnificent things that twirled and jangled and clattered when he set them out on his land.” That same year, North Carolina named whirligigs the official folk art of the state. Fearing Simpson’s whirligigs would eventually be neglected and forgotten, a few of his followers formed a nonprofit organization to purchase and save the structures. Several were placed in locations around Wilson. The city began developing a park to hold many more. To date, 24 of the whirligigs have been restored and moved to the 2-acre Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park

Just desserts: Surry Sonker Headline Trail showcases a tasty treat

Surry Co. Tourism

The Autumn Leaves Festival brings old-time, bluegrass, and gospel music performers of all ages to Mount Airy, Oct. 13–15.

In Surry County, N.C., visitors explore the Yadkin Valley by following their sweet tooth. The Surry Sonker Trail includes eight eateries that serve the county’s signature cobblerlike dessert. Sonker, which consists of cooked fruit and a crust, is made only in Surry County. Some sonkers have a liquid batter poured on top of the fruit, others have a rolleddough crust, and others are prepared on the stove with a dropped-dumpling crust. Each recipe depends upon family tradition. Frugal home cooks developed sonker in the early 1800s to avoid wasting overripe fruit. Traditional sonker fillings include strawberries, blackberries, peaches, blueberries,

apples, and sweet potatoes. “It’s so nice to be a part of a small town with a heritage that everyone cares about,” said Marla Stern, chef and owner of Southern On Main in Elkin. “It’s nice to participate in the culture and traditions and be a part of keeping them alive.” A family tradition of picking and canning blueberries led to Stern’s primary sonker flavor at Southern On Main. She bakes it in the oven and serves it warm with a scoop of ice cream.

A variety of ingredients At The Living Room Coffeehouse and Winebar in Pilot Mountain, sonker becomes a canvas for creative interpretation. Past experiments include a s’mores sonker and ginger pear sonker. “That’s the really cool thing

The owners grew up in the area making sonker with family recipes. They cook the fruit on the stove, transfer it to a pan, add a liquid-batter crust, and bake it. She tops it with a moonshine glaze to create a boozy version she calls “zonker.” Additional stops along the Surry Sonker Trail include Old North State Winery in Mount Airy, Rockford General Store in Dobson, Roxxi and Lulu’s Bakery in Elkin, and Putters Patio and Grill in Dobson. n FESTIVALS CELEBRATE HARVEST, ‘MAYBERRY’ IN MOUNT AIRY What began more than 50 years ago as a celebration of the tobacco and apple harvest has grown into one of the finest fall festivals in the Southeast. The Autumn Leaves Festival brings old-time, bluegrass, and gospel music to Mount Airy’s downtown stage, Oct. 13–15. More than 200 artists and craftsmen line the streets to sell their handmade wares. Community organizations serve barbecue, ham biscuits, collard greens,

cornbread, and Amish doughnuts. These elements, plus a backdrop of vibrant fall foliage, combine for three days of Americana in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge foothills. (autumnleavesfestival.com) Mount Airy celebrates its television fame as the birthplace of actor Andy Griffith and the real-life “Mayberry” with the Mayberry Days Festival, Sept. 19–24. Fans of the television series come for special events and appearances and lots of fun. (surryarts.org/mayberrydays)

Wilson continued from page 13 and Museum, according to the park’s Jeff Bell. A total of 30 whirligigs, including those at the state’s I-95 welcome centers, will grace the park for its November opening. When completed, the park, located at 301 S. Goldsboro St., will include a large grassy area and stage for concerts and events, a farmers market shelter, and typical park amenities. The park will be dedicated and opened to the public Nov. 2, two days prior to the 15th annual Whirligig Festival, scheduled for Nov. 4–5. The event features food, music, games, and whirligigs, and attracts several thousand visitors each year. Insider tip: Next spring, an indoor visitor center, gallery space, and gift shop will open in a renovated tobacco warehouse near the park. “New businesses, such as Brew Works 217, are forming around the park, and some of our former tobacco warehouses are being converted into office and living spaces, thus revitalizing Historic Downtown Wilson,” said Bell. “Wilson is already known for its barbecue, antiques stores, art galleries, Botanical Gardens, Boykin Theatre, and museums such as the North Carolina Baseball Museum, Imagination Station Science and History Museum, and Oliver Nestus Freeman Roundhouse African-American History Museum. The Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park and Museum is a wonderful addition to the city.”

of canal cruising choices You may have already read our feature stories on canal boat vacations and are ready to plan your own soon. A great place to begin is at www. locaboat.com. With 40 years experience, more than 200 suggested routes, and itineraries ranging from two days to several weeks, it’s no wonder Locaboat books 7,400 rentals per year. See why so many people have discovered the absolute joy of a river boat vacation. There’s no license required! If you are ready to leave stress behind, strengthen links with family and friends, make your own pace, experience an original and authentic vacation away from the crowds, and discover nature, scenic villages, and history, it’s time to get planning. Here are some tips on making the best match for your needs.

Choosing the boat No matter which craft you select, all come with linens, bedding, towels, and kitchenware. Just bring your camera and clothes and you are ready to go. While you will be enjoying the numerous restaurants and bistros along your route, there may be times when you feel like cooking your own meals and snacks. At the very least, you’ll want that pot of coffee in the morning and wine glasses in the evening. The kitchens have everything you’ll likely need. Insider tip: We always have the driver taking us from the airport to the marina stop by a grocery store where we stock up on some basics. Locaboat has an astounding 380 boats in the fleet. Each boat has a great hot water supply and tremendously fuel-efficient diesel engines. The Linssen range has one model to accommodate two to six people, with two cabins plus a double bed. The Pénichettes have many models — three Classique models (two to seven people, inside steering); three Aft-Deck models (two to 12 people, a sun terrace); and six Flying Bridge models (two to 12 people, inside and outside steering and upper deck). There also are three models in the Europa range, also accommodating two to six people and equipped with inside and outside steering. We really liked the dual-driving position boats with interior driving, in case the weather gets bad, and top deck driving for those great scenic views and easy parking.

Choosing the destination With 26 departure bases in six European countries, including France, Italy, Holland, Germany, Ireland, and Poland, Locaboat offers something for everyone. Even veteran cruisers will find something new to experience. You’ll want to consider the seasons, airfare and proximity to airports, and the schedules of everyone in your party. We’ve often traveled with two to four other couples, and the planning alone makes for several fun evenings around the table with a few glasses of wine and the computer as the dreams begin to unfold and the possibilities tantalize.

France has 19 bases and covers virtually every region of the country. Holland has the charm of windmills and Amsterdam. Italy has Venice, and what better way to arrive at that maritime city than by boat? Ireland is scenic, very affordable, and great for those apprehensive about language barriers. Germany and Poland remain on our to-do list! Where are you going to go? Visit locaboat.com, book that trip, and make sure you include RecreationNews.com, it’s Facebook page, and Instagram to post photos and share experiences with other readers. Bon voyage!

Touring Gettysburg like a pro In Gettysburg, the assortment of readily available visitor facilities and guide services enables both casual visitors and dedicated Civil War scholars to meet the people and events from those three historic days in July 1863. Use the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center as the entryway to exploring the Battle of Gettysburg. Nearly a million and a half people tour the battlefield each year and many of them start at the visitor center. Operated by the Gettysburg Foundation, the massive facility holds the National Park Service’s information desk, ticket sales, the museum bookstore, refreshment saloon, and restrooms. And, that’s just the beginning. Along with a full schedule of ranger-led programs, the visitor center provides activities that form an ideal introduction and preparation for a tour of the Gettysburg battlefield. A New Birth of Freedom, a film narrated by Morgan Freeman and sponsored by The History Channel, casts the battle in a wider, more human perspective. Viewing the 360-degree Cyclorama, the nation’s largest painting, places visitors amidst the battle at the “high water mark of the Confed-

eracy.” Also at the visitor center is The Gettysburg Museum of the American Civil War, which presents 11 galleries of artifacts and interactive displays. The National Park Service’s Official Map and Guide, available free at the visitor center, coordinates with Auto Tour signs throughout the park and town of Gettysburg, enabling visitors to reach most of the historical sites. Audio CDs, apps, and guide books also can help visitors navigate the battlefield.

Using a licensed guide While it is certainly possible to successfully explore the battlefield on your own — by car, bike, on foot, or even on horseback — a tour with a professional battlefield guide is perhaps the ultimate experience. Licensed battlefield guides train for years and undergo extensive testing by the National Park Service. Guide services are available in two fashions: touring privately in your own car or with a group by bus. Insider tip: A privately hired licensed battlefield guide drives your car and can take you on a customized tour of the battlefield that focuses on your

Reserve your tour at least three days before your visit. “It’s a more personal experience,” explained licensed guide Renae MacLachlan. “We go where you want to go. I know the personalities and the backstories, and I focus on the details and how they affected the outcome.” Touring the battlefield by bus has other advantages. Bonnie Jacoby, of Gettysburg Battlefield Tours, mentioned the climate-controlled motor coaches. “We have the only double-decker, open-air tour buses on the battlefield,” she said. “The elevation gives you a different perspective.” The tour buses make stops at significant points in the engagement, enabling riders to walk the field and follow the course of the conflict. Along with 2 1/2-hour battlefield tours, the company has sunset tours and special theme tours such as “Grant Returns to Gettysburg.” Other companies offer unique experiences such as horse-drawn wagons for touring.

Take in fall foliage by boat or bike at Raystown Lake Pennsylvania is known for its gorgeous fall foliage, but one of the unique things about the Raystown Lake region is that you can check out the changing colors from different vantage points, whether atop a ridge line or out on the water. “Visitors can learn a lot about the history of the land and our resort on our 1 1/2-hour narrated fall foliage cruise, which takes place aboard our Proud Mary showboat every Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday,” said Samantha Kozak, of the Raystown Resort. “Seeing the fall landscape from the lake is a completely different experience from seeing it on land.” The resort also offers pontoon boat rentals, as well as geocaching on the property. Special fall events will take place in October, including a Family Fun Festival and a Haunted Pavilion. Accommodations in the area are plentiful and include two “glamping” yurts with heating and air conditioning, 219 campsites, 79 rental units ranging from rustic cabins to villas, and a 52-room lodge. “Raystown Lake is one of a handful of lakes in our region that is not developed with lakefront houses and docks, and our customers comment on how beautiful and pristine it is,” said Pam Prosser, of Seven Points Marina. “The fact that there is natural shoreline makes house boating very popular, because you have all the advantages of a ‘lake house’ but you can move to different spots.” The marina rents pontoon boats and houseboats until mid-October, and provides a one- to continued on page 31

Explore a wild blueway in Southern Va. Combine three rivers, two lakes, dozens of easy access points, and unspoiled terrain with a location that’s easy to reach and you have the Southern Virginia Blueway. You can spend a day on a lake with the family or challenge the water on a threeday river trek. The blueway’s three rivers comprise 100 miles of navigable water, 80 miles of which are designated as scenic river, and pass through both historic waterfront towns and undeveloped scenic areas. Fishing is exceptional, especially along the Staunton (or Roanoke) River, known as a prime spot for inland stripers. Food and accommodations are nearby. In South Boston, restaurants, supplies, and even an arts venue are all within walking distance of the blueway.

Kerr Lake (also known as Buggs Island Lake) and Lake Gaston combine for 1,200 miles of shoreline, much of which is public undeveloped land on the Virginia side. (The lakes are on the Virginia-North Carolina border.) The combination river and flatwater that make up the Southern Virginia Blueway create an experience different from typical river-only blueways. Gettysburg continued from page 19 the traditional martial accounting. Each weekend, living historians add an additional dimension to the buildings and exhibits.

View from Seminary Ridge The Lutheran Theological Seminary, west of town atop a long ridge, also served as a field hospital after the battle. Today, the building houses the Seminary Ridge Museum, essential to understanding Gettysburg in its broadest context. Three floors of exhibits explore the history of Civil War medical care, social and cultural history, abolition and religion, and how the Civil War still affects us today. Do not miss the view from the cupola. From that spot, advanced Union cavalry watched Confederate skirmishers approach along the Chambersburg Road on the morning of July 1. The view from their elevated

perch left no doubt in the Union officers’ minds that this high ground was the place to make a stand. That decision to defend Seminary Ridge is arguably one of the most important in our nation’s history. There are special Sunset Cupola Tours on Aug. 11 and 12, or request the add-on to your admission. With so much to see and so much ground to cover, visiting Gettysburg may seem challenging. However, by starting at the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center and taking advantage of available opportunities, you can build a Gettysburg experience that answers your specific interests.

There’s plenty of art in the mountains around Morgantown It’s the home of West Virginia University. It’s the home of spectacular mountains. It’s the home of the Monongahela and Cheat rivers. And, Morgantown, W.Va., also is the home of arts. With museums, galleries, theaters, art centers, music, and art festivals, this town showcases the extraordinary talent of a wide array of artisans and performers. The Art Museum of West Virginia University boats a collection of more than 3,000 pieces, ranging from prints to ceramics to paintings. An Asian collection includes Korean pottery, painted Chinese scrolls, and unique pieces from Japan, India, and Thailand. An African exhibit is rich with ritualistic carvings and vibrant jewelry. The museum also holds a stunning collection of contemporary ceramics, and a gallery devoted to the art of native West Virginia filmmaker and artist James Edward Davis. The main gallery houses pieces from artists such as Francisco Goya, Andy Warhol, and Pablo Picasso. New and exciting temporary exhibits regularly rotate through the bright, airy spaces. Shepard Fairey’s Work Against the Clampdown runs through Oct. 15. Fairey is the creator of the 2008 Obama Hope poster. Closely associated with the museum, the WVU Creative Arts Center hosts concerts, symphonies, monthly art exhibitions, plays, and musicals in association with the West Virginia Public Theatre.

Morgantown continued from page 28 work of local artists; one gallery displays new exhibits every month. The MAC also offers classes in both the performing and visual arts. And, its Tanner Theatre runs community productions of plays, plus shows by comic acts, dancers, performance artists, chamber orchestras, and rock bands. Great local art also can be found at the Mountaineer Mall, where the Morgantown Art Association Gallery sells and shows the best of West Virginia’s artists. The Morgantown Theatre Company, based at the beautiful and historic Metropolitan Theatre, also known as the Met, runs a regular schedule of plays and shows — and works in collaboration with WVU’s College of Creative Arts. Mainstage Morgantown and the Hazel Ruby McQuain Amphitheatre provide venues for larger concerts and touring companies. And, downtown is always hopping with live music on weekends at nearly a dozen bars, including the Blue Moose Cafe and Rhythm and Brews.

Take the Arts Walk Perhaps the best way to explore the arts and music of this vibrant small city is at the Arts Walk, scheduled this year for Sept. 22. From 6:00–9:00pm, more than 40 shops, museums, and restaurants in the Main Street section of Morgan-

town will exhibit local artwork, showcase live music, and offer discounts on goods and services. Drinks and hors d’oeuvres, as well as international cuisine such as Caribbean delicacies, will be served. The assortment of arts and crafts is astounding and includes watercolors, stained glass, oil paintings, ceramics, landscapes, lithographs, textiles, wooden carvings, jewelry, and other media. While in Morgantown, don’t miss the statue of legendary comic actor Don Knotts. Dedicated in 2016, it pays tribute to the actor best known for playing Barney Fife on The Andy Griffith Show. Knotts was born in Morgantown in 1924 and was raised in a boarding house owned by his mother. After serving in World War II, Knotts returned to his hometown and earned a bachelor’s degree at West Virginia University. The statue of the fivetime Emmy Award-winning actor is located in front of the Metropolitan Theatre and depicts Knotts sitting and smiling, holding Fife’s deputy’s hat in one hand and a script in the other. Editor’s note: The Andy Griffith Show’s fictional Mayberry is based on Griffith’s hometown of Mount Airy, N.C. There, you’ll find numerous memories of the show and cast. See more about that area and the annual Mayberry Festival in the North Carolina section this month.

Folklife Festival continued from page 20 are Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, country rock pioneers who scored a top 10 Billboard hit with “Hot Rod Lincoln” in 1971, and Slim Jim Phantom (James McDonnell), who helped launch the 1980s rockabilly movement as a drummer for The Stray Cats. Numerous local acts also will perform. Youngsters can head to the Children’s Alley, a dedicated space in IRMC Park just off the main street that’s geared to their interests. They can enjoy crafts and carnival-type games, play in a bounce house, and listen to musicians and storytellers. Even adults can opt for a storytelling experience: The Coney restaurant will serve as host of the Storytellers and Liars Contest, where competitors vying for prizes spin tall tales in humorous or dramatic fashion before a panel of judges. Workshop topics will range from Appalachian Mountain and Celtic music to butterflies of Pennsylvania, locally grown garlic and herbs, the Allegheny woodrat, and woodworking. Speaking of wood, a highlight of this year’s festival is a collection of antique photos on loan from Pennsylvania’s Lumber Heritage Region chronicling

life during the lumber boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. And, of course, there’s the WoodMobile, a 34-foot mobile unit sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. The interior and displays are furnished in woods representing popular commercial species grown in the state. “People can walk through and learn about the lumber industry and the products that come out of it,” Levitz said. “The gentleman from the Lumber Heritage Region (outreach coordinator Steve Manginell) who will accompany the photos here knew all about the WoodMobile. I know it sounds goofy — people kind of giggle when you mention a ‘WoodMobile’ — but he assures me it’s really neat.” That could easily double as a description of the Northern Appalachian Folk Festival. “It’s a really nice event, a very affordable getaway,” Levitz said. “We’re within a four-hour drive of Baltimore and Washington, so it’s a very reasonable weekend trip. We typically have great weather that weekend, and there are a lot of outdoor activities in the area — people can bike and hike and go to our parks. So, they can really make a full weekend out of it.”

Raystown Lake continued from page 21 two-hour orientation to help renters have a stress-free experience. “What’s wonderful about Raystown Lake in the fall is that generally the water temperature is comfortable for swimming and other water sports until mid-Sep-

tember,” added Prosser. “Experienced paddle boarders can enjoy the lake year-round, and for those who aren’t confident with paddle boards, canoes and kayaks are perfect.”

Bike, paddle, and hike with Somerset County’s Trail Mix Want to escape from the congestion and tension of the metro scramble? Try the “Trail Mix” in Somerset County on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. A three-hour drive from the Washington, D.C., area takes you to a spot that promises “trails, streams, and breathtaking scenes.”

The concept is simple: Put all the opportunities for hiking, walking, golfing, biking, and paddling in one place. A dedicated website, good signage, cooperative outfitters, and a calendar of official and pick-up events make it easy to plan a getaway. “We are the place to visit to unplug from tension

and stress,” said Julie Widdowson, who promotes the county. “We do authentic, rural, and scenic really well.” With a population of only 26,000 and no town larger than 3,000 people, Somerset County is the epitome of laid-back and local.

Biking paradise Flat terrain, little traffic, broad vistas — this is a bicycler’s dream. Five marked biking trails, roughly following themes, lace through the county. There’s the Old Town Trail, which visits the once-bustling, now hardly-a-village Old Mount Vernon. The 413 Rail to Trail route follows the once-important rail line to Crisfield. And, who can resist a trail named the Crustacean Causeway? Even off the official trails, most roads have dedicated bike lanes. And, when they don’t, the shoulders are wide enough and the traffic is light enough that it’s not a problem. Consider pedaling Deal Island Road (Route 363), which runs from Princess Anne to the waterman’s village of Deal Island to enjoy some of the best landscapes on the Eastern Shore. The road through the Deal Island Wildlife Management Area is hard-packed gravel, but you’ll find some of the best birdwatching for waterfowl and shorebirds on the East Coast.

In Somerset County, paddlers have 16 distinct water trails from which to choose. The six trails at Janes Island State Park, near Crisfield, offer 30 miles of paddling. Specifically for beginners, one of the trails is very short and very sheltered. More adventurous paddlers can try the trails around Smith Island by loading their

kayaks or canoes onto one of the daily ferries to the island and follow posted signage around Ewell, Tylerton, and Rhodes Point. The newest trail collection is Monie Bay, with three routes, two of which are particularly nice for novice paddlers. Insider tip: The third route at Monie Bay is a 5- to 8-mile excursion for those with hardy stamina and strong shoulder muscles.

Unusual footpaths Walkers enjoy many of the same routes as bikers, parking their cars in town or along the road and strolling through the countryside. Janes Island State Park’s White Tail Trail is a bit different from most. It goes through the loblolly pine and hardwood forest in the park, a different landscape from most of the area’s marshes and water views. Another good stroll is through the Great Hope Golf Course, near Crisfield. It’s an “Audubon Course,” which means it meets standards for conservation and habitat for birds and wildlife in harmony with the golf course. The path is mowed, but not paved. Expect to spot woodpeckers, heron, foxes, and deer. For all of the outdoor activities, remember that this is the Eastern Shore, where flying and crawling critters abound. Bug spray, sun block, and water are essentials. Always leave a note about where you are biking, paddling, or walking on the dashboard of your car or at your hotel or bed-and-breakfast. Be aware that cell service is spotty, at best, in many areas. The Trail Mix website includes information for each activity, maps, and links, including one for the Trail Mix brochure. Enjoying ‘country’ traditions in Carroll County, Maryland It’s a distinctive sound — the creak, clatter, and rumble of a waterpowered mill grinding grains into flour. The waterwheel tumbles, the wooden gears mesh, and golden cornmeal rains down a chute into a screened sieve. Carroll County’s Union Mills first ground grain in 1797 and still stands symbolic of the region’s pastoral traditions. “This is where the Industrial Revolution began, with the water-driven mills,” said Ivan Lufriu, a volunteer at the mill. “This was an active place, the center of local commerce” with a tannery, kiln, and eventually a food cannery. However, despite its prox-

imity to Baltimore, Frederick, and Washington, D.C., Carroll County has definitely remained “country.” For so many regional residents, Carroll County was the goal of Sunday drives “out to the country.” Carloads of city folks were drawn by Baugher’s Orchards Farm Market, Bullocks Restaurant, Hoffman’s Ice Cream and Deli, or any of two or three dozen other family-owned farm stands, roadside markets, and restaurants. Today, despite creeping urbanization, more than 1,100 Carroll County farms still encompass more than 140,000 acres. Carroll County Grown, a component of the Carroll County Depart-

ment of Economic Development, provides a “one-stop shop” for consumers, farmers, producers, and restaurateurs interested in buying locally grown goods. The program lists farmers markets and other participants and offers resources specific to each group of users. The county also has a winery trail with four vineyards. There are seven farmers markets, numerous orchards and fresh produce stands, and even an emu farm. The Carroll County Farm Museum in Westminster celebrates that agricultural heritage with period buildings, farmyard animals, vintage farm machinery, historic artisans, and a full calendar of special events, highlighted by the Maryland Wine Festival on Sept. 16 and 17 and the Fall Harvest Celebration on Oct. 14. The museum also offers regularly scheduled, themed, three-course Victorian teas.

Elsewhere in the county To further whet most any appetite for history, the Antrim 1844 Country House Hotel, in Taneytown, offers lodging and dining in a lavish Antebellum setting. The rooms in the beautifully restored mansion and several adjacent buildings are enhanced by afternoon tea, a morning wake-up tray with newspaper, and a full country-style served breakfast in the dining room. Antrim’s Smokehouse Restaurant serves contemporary American cuisine, by reservation only, while the Pickwick Pub offers 60 single malt Scotches and the hotel’s wine cellar features more than 20,000 bottles

representing more than 2,700 selections.

More than history draws visitors Sykesville, on the county’s southern edge, calls itself “The Coolest Small Town in America,” and goes a long way toward justifying that claim. Two parks, a brace of historic buildings, and a Sunday farmers market add to the allure. For foodies, Sykesville is home to the Market Tavern, a gourmet shop and neighborhood bar specializing in local beer, classic cocktails, regional culinary specialties, and European-style tapas. Weekend brunch in the Market Tavern often includes families with kids. Hungry visitors can also enjoy a full meal at Baldwin Station, a renovated railroad station with a sophisticated menu and “up close” views of passing freight trains. At Carroll County’s western extremity, Mount Airy also offers small town charm and an easily walkable downtown. Combining Mount Airy and Sykesville can make for a full day of leisurely shopping, sightseeing, and quality dining. After an exceptional brunch at the Market Tavern, a barbecue dinner at Mount Airy’s CarterQue BBQ & Grilling Co. can be a perfect counterpoint. Given its agricultural traditions, small town ambiance, diversity of gastronomic opportunities, and contemporary attractions, Carroll County remains an ideal venue for a continued on page 39

Open up the reds: Testing wine aerators When it comes to red wine, especially bigger styles like cabernet sauvignon, Bordeaux, zinfandel, syrah/shiraz, malbec, Italian reds, etc., breathing time and aeration is so important. Giving red wine air opens it up, allowing oxygen to mix in and bringing out the subtleties and nuances. You’ll smell and taste much more. It also helps soften the tannins somewhat. You can simply open a red wine and let it stand for an hour or two to aerate. However, as the opening in a bottle is about the size of a dime, decanting the wine into something with a larger surface area speeds up the process and does a better job. For those in a real hurry to get at the nectar of the grape, there are mechanical aerators that can be used to bring the wine around quicker. One very popular style of aerator is the “handheld.” This one is held over a glass of wine and the wine poured through it. These generally have a larger bowl and several chambers that the wine goes through before it hits the glass. The wine often makes a funny gurgling sound as it passes through the aerator because of components within the unit. They’re portable, and they do a nice

job of opening up the wine and softening tannins. Then, there’s the “in-bottle” version. This unit fits into the mouth of a bottle and the wine is poured out through it into a glass. It controls the amount of wine coming out of the bottle through a small bowl at the tip allowing a small amount at a time to filter through. The bowl mixes the wine with oxygen, so if you purchase this style, make sure that it has a bowl or it won’t be very effective. A third style is the “in glass/decanter” version. These sit right in the opening of a decanter or glass. Somewhat similar to the handheld, they are a lot less work. In a decanter, the wine actually gets double aerated: once through the aerating unit, and again in the decanter. All three work equally well, allowing you to experience more aromatics, flavors, and softer tannins to a degree. In fact, a study found that one trip through one of these aerators was easily equal to 30 minutes sitting in a decanter. As far as which one to get is up to you. The “handheld” is perhaps most portable.

A caution Having experimented with aerators extensively, I found that these units don’t work particularly well for mature wines. The process speeds up their evolution and they seem to die in the glass very quickly. I’ve continued on page 39

music festival I gwen woolf

The show must go on: Bluegrass festival gets new lease on life In a world rife with change, traditions are something to be cherished. Musician Jay Armsworthy not only cherishes traditional bluegrass music, he is perpetuating the tradition of a bluegrass festival that was in danger of demise. The good news is that L’il Margaret’s Bluegrass and Old Time Music Festival will go on — for the 29th year — in St. Mary’s County, Md., Aug. 11–12. Top bluegrass bands, including Flatt Lonesome, Lorraine Jordan and Carolina Road, and Mickey Galyean and Cullen’s Bridge, will be pickin’ and singin’ in the family-friendly festival. In all, there will be nine bands performing over two days. The Joseph Goddard family had run the festival since the beginning on their grain and cattle farm in Leonardtown. The event was named and held in honor of their daughter Margaret, who died at an early age. The stage is now located where her home would have been had she lived. After the recent death of the family patriarch, family members felt they were unable to continue the festival. They approached Armsworthy about taking it on. He and his bluegrass band, Jay Armsworthy and Eastern Tradition, have performed at the event in the past.

guitar and mandolin. “I was raised on bluegrass,” he said. My father played some guitar and we’d have family and friends over and they’d all play. When I was 10 years old, I asked my father to teach me some chords and I’ve been going ever since.” Armsworthy prefers bluegrass because it’s traditional country music — no electric instruments, it’s family-oriented, and audiences are attentive. He also regularly organizes fundraisers for local causes and has a syndicated bluegrass radio show on five stations. A member of the International Bluegrass Music Association, he is committed to preserving bluegrass in the region. “I eat and sleep bluegrass,” he said.

Revitalizing a classic Armsworthy aims to revitalize the L’il Margaret’s festival with some changes from past practices. Instead of a three-day event, the festival will now be two days. Rather than relying on local bands, Armsworthy sought out name bands from other states that have never before performed at the festival. He’s adding at least 20 arts and crafts vendors who will sell homemade items. He lowered admission prices and jazzed up advertising flyers. The Goddard family will still be in

charge of the home-cooked food and non-alcoholic beverages that will be sold. Attendees can bring their own alcohol if used discreetly, although coolers are banned. The stage is under a covered pavilion, so the event will go on rain or shine. Spectators are asked to bring lawn chairs. Families, children, and even pets on a leash are welcome. Camping is available, starting Aug. 9. Armsworthy said a lot of musical jamming in the campground adds to the fun. La Quinta Inn & Suites in California, Md., is the official festival hotel. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the gate. The Goddard Farm is located at 21810 Clay Hill Road in Leonardtown, right behind the county fairgrounds. A mile-long gravel road leads to the woods-shrouded festival site. “It’s St. Mary’s County’s little hidden treasure,” said Armsworthy.
