NGELA SUN IS A GRADE 10 student at the Tsinghua International School. At 16 she may seem a little young but then Angela could have the touch of the divine. She is President of the Volunteer Club and founder of the volunteer work at the Sullivan Rehabilitation Center. And that’s where she is helping some differently-abled children find new meaning. Let’s hear Angel in her own words: When I was just a little girl, I knew how happy I was when other people helped me. I felt equally happy when I was able to help others in whatever small way I could. When I grew up, I came to realize that helping those in need can be done in a more organized way so that one can reach out to more people – this can be done in the form of a volunteer group. My mother also set a good example for me to follow. She is supporting five kids with hearing problems at the Sullivan Rehabilitation Center. When these children were sent to the center for treatment, they were all living in a silent world. They were as cute and lovely like other kids, but
without being able to hear and or have the means to communicate, their future would be very different from other kids. My first steps in helping others began at with my mother. But after doing volunteer work at the Sullivan Center for several months, I started the Students Volunteer Club – to enlist students for volunteer work at the Sullivan Rehabilitation Center. The club was started in my school and I became its president. I enjoy every minute with those lovely kids who are like angels. Sometimes I feel that it’s god’s will that I am being able to achieve my childhood dream of helping those in need because of the platform I got at the Sullivan Rehabilitation Center. When I see these little kids slowly begin to improve their

hearing and speaking, and especially when they run into my arms and call me “sister!” My heart just fills up with joy. It has also been my honor to have met Dr Mohammed Saqib the other day at the Center. I appreciate his donation and am grateful for his encouragement and support. What’s more, that actually strengthens my belief and confidence to keep my volunteer work going in Sullivan Center. Someday I hope I can have some exchanges with Indian volunteer groups so that young students of both countries can get to know each other better. Doing volunteer work teaches me an important lesson about life and societ. Being helpful to society raises my value and purpose as a human being. I would like to continue taking time off my from my busy school schedule just to offer my compassion and love to these lovely kids. Volunteer work is an honorable mission that crosses all borders. In China, more and more people are dedicating their time and energy in helping those in need. I am very proud to be one of them.
