I have to thank Publisher Zoe Hopkins, (co-founder of e Duke Of Essex Polo) and the team at iN Mag Essex for allowing me to ramble on about polo, but not just any polo, this is Glam Essex Polo. When you consider Kingg and Grand Prix Events only took ownership of the event at the beginning of this year, I have been overwhelmed by the local and national support from businesses and Essex residents alike. What a transformation. Essex Polo has definitely grown up! is year the event sees a new home, Hylands House in Chelmsford. It is truly a stunning backdrop for an event which has all the ingredients to be a fabulous weekend. Our objective is to make the Duke of Essex Polo one of the finest polo events in the UK. Now centrally located in Essex the new venue will open the sport up to a wider audience and will continue to become a welcome addition to social scene of the Essex county. So if you are free on Saturday 13 or Sunday 14 July, I look forward to greeting you at one of the finest events in Essex history. So what has iN Mag got in store for July? iN sees a new compact image, styled on a Mui Mui bag no less, so if you are reading this in the luxury of your VIP seat in the Paddock Club Enclosure, be sure you pop it in your bag to take it home as a memento of your day. THE HURlINGHAM POlO ASSOCIATION or the first year, e Duke of Essex Polo is governed by the HPA. We take a look at exactly what the Hurlingham Polo Association does and why it is so important. For many years The Duke of Essex Polo have sighted England versus Argentina but without ‘really’ having a credible team. A little naughty some would say. Now under new ownership, Kingg and Grand Prix Events, The Duke of Essex Grand Prix is now fully endorsed by the Hurlingham Polo Association, the governing body for polo in the UK, Ireland and a few commonwealth countries. Just look at the teams who are playing this year. Some of the most credible players in the realm of polo will be stomping the ground at The Duke of Essex Polo Grand Prix, placing the event at a pivotal level. In 1874, the first ever English polo match was played at Hurlingham, from there the folks of Hurlingham, London. From here the rule book was born which now governs the sport. The phrase The Hurlingham Polo Association was conceived a little later in 1925. However, much to the sport’s demise, at the outbreak of the Second World War, the Hurlingham’s grounds were turned over for agricultural use and then built on. It was not until 1952, and in the HPA’s new English home Cowdray, the game of polo was reestablished to its former glory. Words By Phil Seeva

There are more than 3030 polo players registered with the HPA which is impressive in itself. These polo players are fullplaying members of one of the fifty or more clubs in the UK or Ireland who gain automatic associate membership. As well as governing the sport, the HPA has a clear determination to make polo more accessible to all. They play a huge part in marketing polo, the very important rule-making and allocating handicaps to its members.

THE DUKE OF ESSEx - POlO GRAND PRIx 2013 -

Well, it’s here... the Duke of Essex Polo has finally arrived. The Duke Of Essex Polo Issue Page 23

Hylands House is a stunning backdrop for this years event, which for the first time in its history, sees it being held on Saturday as well as Sunday. ith such a dramatic change, there is much hype and speculation about the 8th Duke of Essex Polo. What we can tell you, is that the event is guaranteed to live up to the hype. Thrilling top level polo will be played on a purpose built polo pitch, which will see family and VIP entertainment from the first to the very last minute with fine food, amazing bars, live music, DJ sets and stalls... there’s even a funfair.

The main attraction over the weekend is polo, however the new owners have ensured the entire weekend’s entertainment lives up to expectations. On the music front British Soul sensation Jaki Graham will be performing some of her greatest hits including ‘Could It Be I’m Falling In Love’, ‘Round and Around’ and ‘Set Me Free’, while in to the evening the VIP crowd and dusk ticket holders will be treated to Polo Glam a set of various DJ’s including the Ministry of Sound’s Dream Team. The music will no doubt be felt into the evening across the Essex countryside.

Saturday 13 July at 12 noon sees the first match, when LEA, a polo team owned by the private jet specialists London Executive Aviation, take on The Kingg, a team sponsored by Lookers Land Rover. In the afternoon Interlagos will take on The Duke’s team which features the unrivalled professional talents of Roddy Williams (left) and Oliver Hipwood (right). On Sunday 14 July, the teams are joined by Bentley and play in a further round of matches before the overall winner is crowned the Duke of Essex Polo Champion for 2013. This year is the first time that the Duke of Essex Polo Grand Prix 2013 has been sanctioned by the Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA) which represents a significant step forward and increases the credibility of the event. Page 24 The Duke Of Essex Polo Issue

Fresh from Britain’s Got Talent (and with Simon Cowell’s praise still ringing in their ears) junior dance sensation Youth Creation will be performing on Saturday 13 July. Not only will everyone get a chance to see the talented bunch ‘throw some shapes’ but a lucky few will also get to meet the performers and chat to them about their recent experience on national TV. They may even show some people just how it’s done!

show jumping arena. Some of the country’s very best show jumpers will be competing in this graceful and skilful sport in a series of team and individual events that will include novice and experienced riders.

The event’s main sponsor Lookers will be bringing a special guest, no other than the new Range Rover Sport, which will see its UK launch at the event. This incredibly handsome car will be on hand to transfer VIPs around the estate, you will be able to see up-close how impressive the Range Rover Sport is. In support of this launch, Lookers will be bringing the Land Rover Experience Mini Terrapod, which demonstrates the off-road abilities of the world’s most capable vehicles. Guests will be driven over extreme obstacles including the Slide Slope, the Walking Holes and the Up and Over, all very impressive if you’re watching, but slightly terrifying if you’re driving! Lovers of ‘horses’ rather than ‘horsepower’ will be treated to the Duke of Essex Show Jumping Challenge which will be taking place throughout Saturday in the

But if you’re a dog person rather than a horse person, the organisers have secured one of the best dog display teams in the country. Britain’s longest established and leading dog display team leave nothing to chance when it comes to giving the audience an outstanding show with truly unique and fascinating commentary. The team has huge appeal for the young and old alike and features many different breeds of dog along with their handlers. A genuine must see as these guys are the best in the business, even the Queen thinks so! The family entertainment doesn’t stop there. If you have ever wondered what life would have been like in Chelmsford, Anglo Saxon times, then you are in for a real treat. The Viking Village, a family orientated group, will be showing the crowd how they lived their lives, what they slept in, what they ate and how they dealt with their enemies. Just make sure you don’t get on the wrong side of these guys! But if Viking living isn’t your thing, then why not hang out with the Heart Angels from the radio Heart FM. The Heart Angels will be inviting people to join in the fun in their dedicated area with classic family games such as giant Connect 4, Giant Jenga and face painting with the best Heart music hits that are around at the moment.

The Duke Of Essex Polo Issue Page 25

And then there’s the ultimate in family fun... the fairground. No event of this scale would be complete without a fantastic fairground and the Duke of Essex Polo is no exception. Perfect for kids and big kids alike, the fairground will be encouraging everyone to take to the rides and inflatables and enjoy themselves all day. The sights and sounds of a fairground are totally unique and quintessentially British, the perfect family entertainment for a summer event. The VIP Marquee sees a three course banquet fit for a Duke, with beautiful outside terraces to watch the polo, a live auction in aid of Great Ormond Street, (GOSH) live entertainment, complimentary BBQ in the evening and Polo Glam intothe night. There is also an outside stage for the evening outside entertainment. This is your opportunity to rub shoulders with all the Essex finest people and a plethora of celebrities from the music and TV industry and of course our beloved TOWIE cast. And if you are not VIP, spot a celebrity and grab an autograph! Page 26 The Duke Of Essex Polo Issue

New for this year is the Sunday afternoon Vintage Tea package which includes entrance to the VIP area from 1.00pm, chauffeur transfer courtesy of Lookers Land Rover, a glass of the fizzy stuff, a three tiered sandwich and cake selection from the fabulous Belgique (per person, so no one has to share), delectable Vintage China from Madhatters-Tea Party and a beautiful relaxing environment to take in the afternoon’s polo. It’s perfect as a treat for someone special or just a great way to spend time with friends. When you add all of this to a fantastic atmosphere created by an adrenaline filled sport, where the spectators are genuinely close to the action then the result is a truly exceptional day out. It’s already perceived as being one of the best corporate VIP days on the calendar but for this year, it’s being opened up to a wider audience so everyone including families can enjoy the fun as well and return the next day.

is Duke of Essex Polo is already guaranteed to be the biggest as well as the best... it’s sure to be a good one. For tickets www.dukeofessexpolo.co.uk. only Family tickets are available on the door, VIp & polo Glam tickets are via the website or call the booking line number 08451 246 123

he opening of the new and exquisite Velvet Rose Gift shop in Florence walk, Bishop’s Stortford was a glamorous affair. The inspirational venture had been a long held dream for Sydney Hellmers (25). Sydney studied Corsetry and Lingerie before moving on to study Art, Textiles and Fashion at Cambridge. Sydney’s inspiration is gathered from art fairs, art galleries and exhibitions which she visits and being a Gemini, the split sides of her personality resonate throughout the store with a varied mix of girly, vintage glamour, beautiful glassware, silk scarves, French soaps and Spitalfield’s candles against an eclectic mix of hedonistic, on-trend range of jewellery, bearing skulls, birds and deer heads. This apple has clearly not fallen very far from the success tree - Sydney is part of the flourishing Essex based family who own Lathams at Home, who have been trading in Epping since the early seventies and since in Bishops Stortford. Surrounded by such a creative family along with Sydney’s sublime eye for detail, the Velvet Rose cannot fail to inspire whilst looking for the ultimate gift!

TrY BEforE You BuY eorgette and Billy Smith founders of Dingvideo, an online video directory, found love in the lush green fields of Raindance many moons before the patter of tiny feet were on the horizon. Now living in the Essex countryside, their family lives seem far removed from their wild roots. But how did their paths cross, and where did the magic begin? How long have you and Billy been together and how did you meet? We met at a Raindance 22 years ago and have been married for 16 years. Billy was a showman from the fair ground which was so far removed from my boarding school background, but we just worked. We had the same interests, made each other laugh and fitted together like a puzzle. He loved festivals and so did I, so we spent many of our tender years exploring them together, (laughs) we have some stories to tell!

Where did your brainchild ‘Dingvideo’ evolve from? From the festivals really. We loved the creativeness and the free-spirited vibe they stood for. We initially launched a mobile catering business which we took to all the festivals; our pleasure was our work! Every day we were inspired by great bands, amazing acts and thought provoking entertainment. We thought it would be fantastic to be able to view these incredible performers from the comfort of a computer, especially if you were in an event management business. How amazing would it be to be able to see an act before you committed. This is where the idea was born. As the years progressed we started trying for a family, we knew our carefree life of festivals was no longer an option. It gave us the opportunity to ignite Dingvideo.

Where did the name arise?

DingVideo is the ‘Ideas’ Website not happy with the technology and functionality of the end product. We knew it had flaws, it just didn’t flow as it should, but then we had learn’t so much along the way. We kept saying to each other: ‘Hmm this should lead there, this needs to flow here.’ We resided to the fact that although we had spent thousands of pounds, it needed a pair of fresh eyes. So we researched the top web designers in the country and set up a meeting. ‘Webwax’ were incredible and only in Chelmsford which was a bonus! They took our ideas and gave us a new direction. The rebrand to Dingvideo fitted the new look. It also explains more about what we do. Ding signifies a thought and video is what we do.

Can you tell us a little bit about the business? There are two sides of the Dingvideo. Businesses use it as a tool to promote themselves or even to look for applicants for a position in the company. You can’t ever get a feel of what people are like, or even sound like, from a CV. The viewers use Dingvideo as a useful video directory so they can see before they try. It is essential, especially in this climate, to see what you are getting before you spend your hard earned money. We have a huge amount of traffic for holiday destinations, hotels, ski chalets and resorts. Another popular area of the website is our Whats On section. There are a plethora of attractions for the kids: theme parks, summer festivals, zoos, soft-play centres, ski and water parks. Our site is also useful for event planners. You can get a feel for an act from the videos before you book. There are many categories: bands, magicians, tribute acts, look-a-likes, DJ’s in action. The list is endless.

What has been the most challenging aspect of the business? Realising the original website didn't look and feel how we envisaged. We are now so excited by Dingvideo as it is exactly how we want it to look and feel. Businesses are uploading videos every day. Is it expensive to use? It’s FREE! Totally free! We know all businesses and viewers will find it useful, just look us up and everyone take advantage of our site. Dingvideo is here, free, for you all.

We started the creation of the site back in 2009. My son got stung by nettles in the garden and came up to me and said: ‘Mummy the Dingwuddles have got me!’ His little face was so innocent, it was such an adorable moment, so this was where the original name was born. We worked with the name Dingwuddles and our website was created. As the website grew, so did our ideas. Billy and I were

essex and marbella go hand-in-hand, with an abundance of brides opting for the sunnier and more trustworthy climate for their wedding day, there is no wonder why Jessica White's business is booming. a tinto de Verano was the perfect starting point as we interviewed Jessica about her dream job, director of White Wedding Days. Why did you want to become a wedding planner? I’m a romantic person, so weddings have always held a special place in my heart. Even when I was a little girl, watching a bride and groom on their wedding day was fascinating and so helping to be a part of a special day now is like a dream come true. A cliché… maybe, but it’s great to be able to do a job that makes me smile every day.

What is it like to plan weddings in Spain?

Andalucia as I think a stylish wedding here looks amazing against the quaint white towns and traditional locations such as a Monastery nestled amongst the orange trees.

What does White Wedding Days offer? I believe that every wedding should be unique and reflect the personalities of the couple completely, combining my passion and creativity with the imagination and hopes of the couple ensures that it’s not just about helping people get married, but creating memories with them and for them, that will last for years to come.

In my opinion Andalucia, and specifically Marbella, have some of the most beautiful backdrops in the world; with the beautiful blue Mediterranean on one side and the mountains on the other, providing stunning beach settings and breath-taking hill top locations. The venues in and around Marbella also offer something for every style of wedding – if it’s privacy you want then the wealth of private villas is astounding but if it’s grand opulence and panache then the five star hotels can provide everything to suit the bride and grooms needs. It’s not always just about the venue! The florists, caterers, cake decorators, photographers and other suppliers that I work with also have a passion for their job, so its great to work with them. Of course the sun helps a lot too.

White Wedding Days offers two types of wedding assistance - the Complete Package which is a personalised service and means I will be on hand from day one for the couple to help with every aspect of the wedding; and the Wedding Day Package is designed for couples who only want help with their wedding day itself – they don’t want the stress of ensuring everyone turns up on time, this is where I step in. On the run up to the wedding I am available as much as the couple needs and can take away any stress the bride and groom might have. Effectively I’m around 24/7 if needed.

Why do you love being a wedding planner? Helping a couple to plan their ‘perfect day’ and seeing it through to fruition, is the best reward for a job like mine; watching a bride marry the man she loves, when surrounded by friends and family, is heart-warming. It’s also great to take the journey from engagement to wedding day with a couple you have become friends with, a couple you speak to more than they do their own families. I love planning weddings in

ExclUsIvE INTERvIEW with...

Taking the charts by storm with their bass-heavy pop hits, the Little Mix girls have come a long way since winning the X Factor in 2011. The now fully fledged queens of the beat have two hit singles and an album under their belts. With the support of their X Factor mentor, North London urbanista Tulisa Contostavlos, the girls have shaped themselves into the most successful girl band in the UK charts today. Regrouping from their busy lives, we took the girls to a roller disco for our iN Mag Essex shoot and interview. Rocking up with a familiar youthful energy, there were no diva demands or a dark-tinted window limo waiting outside; just four young ladies tackling the demands of being a modern-day pop star.

Page 44 The Duke Of Essex Polo Issue

iN: Hi Girls, sitting here with you now you’d never guess you were Simon Cowell’s proteges. Jade: It’s a bit crazy isn’t it? We’re still really excited about our album DNA. It’s like another side of Little Mix and we worked so hard when writing it. It’s a bit darker, a bit more mature. Leigh-Anne: It was great to be a little bit sexy. iN: Do you feel like there’s any competition between Little Mix and the X Factor contestants coming through? Perrie: Nooo Jesy: Nooo. We’re more supportive of it, really. We have our favourites. Last year I wanted Jahmene to win as he lacked in confidence and something as big as this can really give you a whole new world. We also knew James Arthur and Ella were destined to be huge. iN: You grew close to your X Factor mentor Tulisa during your time on the X Factor, with her even nicknaming you her ‘Little Muffins’. Have you stayed in contact with her since? Jesy: Yeah, we bumped into her at the Teen awards. We talked for ages about X Factor and we’re going to go out with her soon. iN: Girl bands are storming up the charts at the moment – rise of girl power! (The girls whoop and cheer at this reference. Well, who wouldn’t!) Is this a good thing or do you see it as a threat? Jade: It’s definitely a good thing! Girl bands haven’t really been around until recently and it will be good to have them back! The charts have been dominated by boys. Both Stooshe and Girls Aloud are amazing. We are all so different, it is a big enough world out there for us all and some more! iN: It’s well publicised that modern-day pop stars sometimes suffer from crazy fans on Twitter. Have you had any problems with obsessive Little Mixers? Leigh-Anne: We’ve got a certain group of fans that follow us everywhere and they know our schedule better than us! They’ll be like ‘oh so you’re going to be at Sony tomorrow, right?’ and I’ll be like ‘uh? Really? OK!’ (She laughs) Luckily, they are a very supportive fan base.

at chatting to the girls, it could be very easy to forget that they’ve not always been part of a highly successful girl band. Thrown together at the Boot Camp stage of X Factor, who’d have thought that four girls from different corners of Britain could create such a tight bond, so quickly? Here at iN Towers we decided not to be held down to the rules of interviewing decided by corporate bigwigs with a promotional agenda. So instead of conducting a bog-standard interview (yawn), we decided to have a bit of fun with our loyal subjects, so we pulled out our favourite 1980s board game, the classic ‘Kerplunk’ for a little bit of tense rivalry! (Who doesn’t love entertaining a screeching girl band with brightly coloured plastic stick and marbles?) As we set up the game, the girls discuss between themselves who’s going first. Watching them off-camera, it would be easy to compare their wacky spirit and fierce loyalty to each other with that of the Spice Girls. With the order decided (only after Perrie took control and numbered the girls one to four), and the Kurplunk set up, we’re ready for the mayhem to commence! Jesy’s first to pull, and she’s taking it very seriously. With every ball dropped it gave the perfect moment to quick fire questions at them.

iN: What’s your favourite track of all time? Jesy: Gwen Stefani ft Eve - Let Me Blow Your Mind. Perrie: No it’s not. It’s Venga Boys! iN: What’s been your biggest fashion faux pas? Leigh-Anne: For me, it was most of what I wore on X Factor. he girls erupt into discussion about their X Factor outfits and begin reminiscing about the ‘olden days’. I have to stop myself enquiring if at the tender ages of 19 and 21, they can call X Factor the ‘olden days’! Trying to regain control of the interview, I begin the quick-fire again… iN: What’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever said to another celebrity? Jesy: Ohhh! I know, I know! Once we met Ed Sheeran at the Top of the Pops and this one here (Leigh-Anne) said, ‘Oooh can you write a song for us please?’ Perrie: Yeah that was really embarrassing. iN: You talk about science in your latest single DNA, who’s the biggest geek in the group? Everyone but Jade shouts: Jade! Jesy: She writes everything in her notebook. Perrie: She’s very intelligent. Leigh-Anne you’re up there too. So it goes Jade, Leigh-Anne, then Jesy and me on a level! iN: Who takes the longest to get ready? (Instantly, the girls agree) JESY! Perrie: She takes 45 minutes in makeup whereas I only take 20. We’ve timed it! Jade: Yeah, but I like a lot of detail on my make-up! Page 46 The Duke Of Essex Polo Issue

iN: So girls, over the past year you’ve gained two number one singles, thousands of adoring fans and oodles of press attention. If you weren’t an international pop star what would you be? Leigh-Anne: I would be doing Educational Studies at Middlesex University. Jesy: Don’t lie – you’d be on Jeremy Kyle. Jade: I was going to do an art degree, I love drawing. Jesy: I’d still be working as a barmaid! Perrie: I’d be sitting on the sofa with my mam telling me to get a job. I always wanted to be a singer and I was never gonna stop.

nd from that, it’s Jade’s go again. One of the more demure members of Little Mix, she carefully pulls a stick out with dainty fingers, concentrating like her life depended on it! Unfortunately, she drops a couple of marbles and gets a booby question. Thinking the girls will be too young to remember Will Smith’s the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, I tentatively ask: iN: Can you rap the Fresh Prince of Bel Air? Jade: Oh can we! To my surprise, the girls break into word-perfect harmonised rap.

What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you? Jesy: We did a thing for T4 and it was based on a sports day. I was taking part in the sack race against another boy band and literally stacked it. I was mortified! They played it in slow motion in front of everyone.

iN: What’s the best piece of advice your mum ever gave you? Perrie: Well… The girls say in unison: Momma told me not to waste my time, she said spread your wings my little butterfly, don’t let what they say keep you up at night, and if they give you shhhh, just walk on by!

iN: Alright girls, we’re down to the really important questions now. What’s your party trick? Jade: I can wiggle my ears! I was born with it, my brother can do it too. I think it’s genetic! iN: Thumbs up or thumbs down: Onesies? Perrie: THUMBS UP. Jesy: I think onesies are good for indoors but I’m not a fan of when people wear them out! We got onesies when we went on Keith Lemon and they’re amazing.

nd with that, it’s Perrie’s go. We’re down to the last two straws and you could cut the tension in the room with a knife. Deciding she wasn’t going to win, Perrie took her Kerplunking future into her own hands. Picking up the 1980s board-game, cute, blonde Perrie hurls the Kerplunk across the room, declaring she wasn’t going to win anyway. And with that, the game was over and so was the interview. Little Mix left just as they entered, in a hive of jostling and laughing.

You can recreate the fun we had with little Mix with your very own Kerplunk, available at amazon.co.uk. little Mix's album DNA is out now. (syco / sony Music) The Duke Of Essex Polo Issue Page 47

horsing around at essex polo! as much as I may deny it, my annual expedition to the Duke of essex polo rarely centre’s around a passion for the sport itself. I don’t think I have ever watched a full match! I am a little ignorant towards the sport that dates back to 500 B.C as I seem to be more excited about the eating and drinking module of the event. o with the The Duke of Essex Grand Prix relocating to Hyland’s Park this year, and for the first year being governed by The Hurlingham Polo Association, I’m expecting perhaps greater endorsements towards the gaming side of this party (sorry, I mean ‘this prestigious sporting event’) and if that’s the case, then I must be prepared. My intention was to give you some interesting statistics about Polo, but as impressive as it is that the game was invented to exercise cavalry units in Persia and equally amazing the fact that Sly Stallone loves the sport so much that he has his own private polo field, I got slightly side tracked. The diversion was a famous polo payer named Ignacio ‘Nacho’ Figueras. But why? Well, his middle name is ‘Nacho’ for a start but that wasn’t what drew me to him, well maybe at first (who wouldn’t want their middle name to be Nacho). No, it was when I saw his picture; see below, I’ll give you a minute… You done? Well Mr. F! Someone’s been blessed with the good looking gene, haven’t they? In 2009 he was rated the second best looking man in the world, good work! And what’s even better, when approached by a photographer at Calvin Klein’s wife’s dinner party Nacho stated, amongst other things, he merely hoped that modeling might help him buy some more squirrelly mounts! I’d like to pretend that I know what a squirrelly mount is, but to be honest this beautiful looking man could have said he wanted extra money to fund his knitting hobby, it wouldn’t have mattered! Did I hear some of my male readers saying ‘I’m a straight up heterosexual guy but, if I had to date a man…’ Or was that just my boyfriend, who worryingly says that quite a lot lately? he Zetter Townhouse, in Clerkenwell, is a 13room hotel formed out of two converted Edwardian townhouses. located a few steps across the cobbled square from the Zetter Hotel, the Townhouse is the latest addition to mark sainsbury and michael Benyan’s stylish hospitality portfolio.

From the outside you would be forgiven for mistaking the Zetter Townhouse for a rather conservative private residence, but one step beyond the threshold reveals quite a different personality to the boutique hotel. eccentricity rules at the Zetter townhouse.

n the opulent mix & match of jewel coloured velvets and antique leather furniture that is the cocktail lounge, every possible surface is crowded with a joyful riot of objects du jour. It really is an Aladdin’s cave of charming, aged curios and glamorous junk. Served in a seemingly endless library of different shapes of vintage glassware, the cocktails at the Townhouse come from the marvellous mixologist mind of tony Conigliaro, of the award winning bar 69 Colebrooke row. Paying homage to london’s rich spirit making history and in keeping with the setting, the cocktail menu, rife with homemade cordials and bitters, draws inspiration from the past in every one of the delicious concoctions served from the Zetter Townhouse’s apothecary style bar. Page 52 The Duke Of Essex Polo Issue

rom the deceptively simple twelve drink menu of house cocktails (each priced at ÂŁ8.50) it is clear Conigliaro really knows his alcohol. Arguably the most elaborate cocktail on the list is the Flintlock, which comes with its own 5th of November style fireworks show. Alongside modern classics like the twinkle (an invention of Conigliaro himself ), you will also find historical twists on traditional cocktail fare, of which the rhubarb kir royal is a particularly fragrant treat.

espite the stupendous levels of cool to be found within the wallpapered walls of The Zetter Townhouse, happily it doesn’t get in the way of the fun. Touches like the table tennis table room (little known fact - pingpong or wiff-waff as it was known, was a popular after dinner parlour game in the 1800s), the mini bars readily stocked with miniature bottles of pre-prepared house cocktails and complimentary use of the Brompton bikes for guests, all give The Zetter Townhouse a quirky country house charm, right in centre of london.

Motoring esla’s been on the scene for a while now, its Roadster put to bed the myth that electric cars couldn’t be both fast and fun, but it was never a mainstream option, which brings us nicely on to the company’s latest offering - the Model S. Not only is it a four-door ‘everyday saloon’, it’s also the first ground-up car the company has ever produced, unlike the Roadster that used Lotus’ Elise as a base. Tesla’s been careful not to be too revolutionary with company insiders admitting they have made a concerted effort not to disillusion buyers with wacky, space-age looks. No wonder when the company has already taken deposits for 10,000 cars and plans to build 20,000 a year. The result is a vehicle that, skin deep, looks conventional, with even the nose seemingly housing a radiator grille. But look closer and there are pointers to what lurks beneath: the door handles are flush with the body (only popping out when the Tesla is ‘plipped’ open), what looks like a conventional gaping front end is actually a blanking sheet of black plastic and there’s no exhaust. It all helps give the Tesla a lower drag coefficient than cars such as the super-frugal Toyota Prius. The outwardly conventional approach continues inside, but only if your eyes can miss the huge touchscreen system located on the central console. The 17”, high-definition screen is by some way larger than anything offered by the competition and brings information on the car’s media, navigation, communications, cabin controls and trip data onto one screen. It’s also internet ready and fully connectable to spherical’s such as your mobile phone.

Aside from the screen, though, things are pretty standard, with what look like high-quality materials and switchgear that has been borrowed from Mercedes.

powered competition. The only apparent noise comes from the tyre’s and the wind as it brushes across the body.

The bonus that comes with the Model S’ electric drivetrain is that it allows Tesla to avoid the limiting factors of a conventionally powered car.

Handling should also prove to be deceptively good because, although a heavy car, the big Tesla’s batteries and motor allow for a centre of gravity far lower than a normal car’s and that translates into less lateral momentum and more grip.

To begin with there is no transmission tunnel, which in the rear-wheel drive competition would house the propshaft that delivers power to the rear wheels. That means a flat floor and more space between the rear seats. Under the bonnet, where you would normally find an engine, is what Tesla has christened the ‘frunk’ and what we will call ‘useful additional luggage space’. In fact, there’s so much space that even in the car’s saloon form there’s room for two more with their Volvoestate-style children’s seats in the boot.

A former Lotus employee, with 20 years experience, has been entrusted with fine tuning the Tesla’s multi-link rear, and double wishbone front suspension. It’s not all good news, though, as like all the pure-electric cars that came before it, the Model S can’t hope to compete with the range of a diesel or even some of the world’s most thirsty petrols.

But despite its spacious cabin and hefty 2108kg weight, the Model S can shift at an alarming rate. The benchmark 0-60mph should be achievable in fewer than 4.5 secs, while top whack comes in at an impressive 130mph, both thanks to 416bhp and 443lb ft of torque.

Tesla assures us that the range - depending on model could be as much as 300 miles, but at an average speed of 50mph, it is hardly possible in the real world. Factor in keeping pace with normal traffic and the adverse effects of cold weather (which is known to eat battery power) and 150 miles might be a more achievable target.

But the biggest shock is how it’s power is delivered, as the Model S’ whisper-quiet electric engine immediately gives it an advantage over the petrol, diesel and hybrid-

So the latest Tesla may not be completely faultless, but it is another step towards the usable electric car that we’re told will soon become the norm.

Priced at around £63,000 and already on sale, the Model s is one of the best reason yet to go electric.

NEW DAWN! e Ghibli - success in e making

ollowing the success of Maserati’s Quattroporte, whose sales figures took even its maker by surprise, is the company’s new BMW 5 Series rival, the Ghibli. As if to ensure its success, the Ghibli will share much in common with the recently launched new Quattroporte, including its suspension, engines and gearboxes. Styling is also pretty similar, with Maserati obviously trying to gel saloon-car practicality with GT looks in a way that the Quattroporte did better than anything else. The ‘bottom-end’ role of the new model will be filled by the entry-level twin-turbo 3-litre, 326bhp V6, which will drive through the rear wheels. While the Ghibli S will be powered by a 404bhp V8 engine, with either rear or four-wheel drive. It’s the mid-range choice that, as a diesel, will perhaps be the biggest surprise to enthusiasts.

Page 59ByThe Duke Campbell Of Essex Polo Issue Words Russell

It’s the first derv-powered machine to be produced by Maserati and, with fuel prices rising ever higher, it’s an obvious move to make and one the Italian firm hopes will bring a massive boost in sales. All models will sport an eight-speed, paddle-shift gearbox, double wishbone suspension up front and a multilink setup at the rear, while both will be reined in by the firm’s Skyhook electrically controlled dampers. Important fundamentals, meanwhile, include a perfect 50:50 weight distribution and a kerb weight under that of the agile Quattroporte. Can it compete with the mainstream competition of BMW, Mercedes and Jaguar? With a starting price of nearly £50k, there is an obvious disadvantage, but buyers looking for a car that delivers comparative rarity, good looks, a fabulous bloodline and fourdoor practicality will surely be tempted by the Ghibli.
