As part of their farewell, the students and faculty presented President Mary Maloney with a gift fit for a president - her very own cherry tree. The tree was planted where President Maloney always envisioned a Fine Arts building on the campus. When we’ve realized the dream of being able to build it, we hope Mrs. Maloney will return for the groundbreaking and chop down her cherry tree in presidential fashion!

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

I

t has been a privilege and honor to serve as the school President of Immaculate High School. The dedication and commitment of the faculty, staff, counselors, parents, administrators, coaches and alumni is unparalleled to any high school, making us a vibrant community and the number one Catholic co-ed day school in Connecticut.

We concluded our 60th anniversary as a school. The rich traditions, student achievements, alumni accomplishments, local community, parent and alumni support as well as the unveiling of strategic capital enhancements and endowment plans have furthered our vision for students today and in the years ahead. The insight of our Board of Directors in securing the school’s viability and it’s collaboration with administration to ensure that our faith-based college-prep programs are exemplary. I am thankful to have had the opportunity to partner with them, with an amazing Advancement Team led by Director Debbie Basile and will always treasure the special moments shared with so many alumni while ‘on the road.’ Your support empowers students to be the best version of themselves and allows them to pursue their dreams so that they can make a difference as profound, moral leaders. Because of you, Immaculate is and will continue to be a truly blessed community. With gratitude, Mary R. Maloney President

INNOVATIVE IMMACULATE TEACHERS RECEIVE GRANTS We are proud of our teachers’ continued commitment to innovation and congratulate Dr. Stephanie Rugg for receiving a prestigious grant this year. Foundations in Education is an independent non-profit initiative created to assist the Diocese of Bridgeport’s ongoing mission to support Catholic education in Fairfield County by supporting innovation in academic and extra-curricular programs, fostering opportunities for the professional development of school leaders and providing scholarship assistance to families in need. Dr. Rugg’s award for Measuring pH and Spectrophotometry in College-Level Labs includes funding of $5,551 for the 2023-2024 academic year. “I was very excited when I heard about this grant,” said Rugg, “because it gives my students an opportunity to do more experimentation and have hands-on experience. I told my honors classes and they were super excited too!”

“I feel like our Podcasting class helps us with social anxiety because it makes you more comfortable speaking to others fluently and correctly,” - Brooke G.‘25 PUTTING LAST YEAR’S GRANTS TO GREAT USE Some cool new equipment is proving that Physics works for Immaculate students. That’s what AP physics teacher Anthony D’Ausilio said about the tools he was able to buy with the $11,000 Foundations in Education grant he received last year. His proposal, Integrate Real World Data Collection and Analysis into Physics Labs, allowed the science department to upgrade lab equipment with Bluetooth-based sensors. “This data collection with rotational dynamics…we did not have this capability before the Foundations in Education approved this grant money,” D’Ausilio said. “This is just one of about 25 experiments that we are able to do now with the award.” And just down the hall, you might think you’ve stumbled upon a professional recording studio – where band and recording studio instructor Anthony Pellegrini teaches Podcast 101. Pellegrini received a $2,500 Foundations in Education grant to improve Immaculate’s recording studio with a 2022 Mac mini, cardioid condenser microphone and audio interface package. This equipment helps Mustangs produce a professional podcast shared publicly that covers everything from sports to pop culture to studying tips. For Brooke Gilroy ‘25, the class has been life changing. “I feel like our Podcasting class helps us with social anxiety because it makes you more comfortable speaking to others fluently and correctly,” she said. Immaculate Welcomes New Chaplain Father Philip Phan

R

espect, responsibility and reverence are three words that, for decades, have greeted every visitor to Immaculate High School. Immaculate’s new chaplain Reverend Philip Lanh T.X. Phan has done an outstanding job bringing these words to life this year. “Our school is special because our students are special - in terms of their faith and their desire to know God,” said Immaculate’s Father Phan. “While many young people shy away from the church or faith in God because they think religion is no longer relevant in their lives, most of our students feel differently. Our teachers encourage students to go Mass and Adoration, plus school staff regularly attend these services themselves. I love it here and want to continue to build students’ relationship with God.” Father entered St. John Fisher Seminary in Stamford in 2007 and completed his seminary studies in Maryland. He was ordained to the diaconate in St. Augustine Cathedral on June 20, 2015, by Bishop Caggiano and served at several parishes and at Notre Dame High School. Father Philip continues his part-time services as Priest Moderator for the Holy Vietnamese Martyrs Catholic Parish in Bridgeport. Under Father Phan’s guidance, Immaculate offers Adoration during lunch and Mass twice per week, prayer services, confession and school-wide prayer in the morning and afternoon. Father Phan also provides pastoral counseling and is a regular in the dining hall visiting students. You will also catch him accompanying Theology classes or Campus Ministry groups on field trips, hikes and retreats.

his year’s assignment was to create an Unmanned Aircraft System that delivers LD3 cargo from urban to rural areas and Immaculate High School’s engineering team did an amazing job! The “Brave Engineers” squad won the Real World Design Challenge (RWDC) at the State Level “Connecticut Governor’s Challenge” and went on to compete in the RWDC National/ International Competition in the spring. The Real World Design Challenge is an annual competition run by public and private partnerships, with the goal of setting a solid foundation for our future STEM workforce. It gives high school students the chance to work on real-world engineering challenges using professional science and engineering resources in a virtual environment – applying classroom lessons to real-life challenges found in the working world. The Immaculate team has won first place five times on the state level and has been recognized as one of the top three teams nationally.

here is nothing like real life practice when it comes to the medical field – and that’s what Immaculate students get right in the classroom.

Those interested in pursuing health and medical science as college students including nursing, physical and occupational therapy and related fields benefit from the school’s innovative Certified Nursing Assistant Program. Twelve graduates passed both their Prometric Written and Clinical Test so they are Certified Nursing Assistants through the State of Connecticut. At the end of the school year, the majority were job hunting with openings and offers from Danbury Hospital, Ability Beyond, Hancock Hall and RVNA Health.

IMMACULATE HIGH SCHOOL NAMES NEW DIRECTOR OF ADVANCEMENT ERIN CALAMARI Immaculate High School named Erin Calamari of New Fairfield its new Director of Advancement effective July 1. Calamari brings 13 years of extensive experience to the school in fundraising, capital campaign management and communications while working for various colleges and private sector organizations. Before joining Immaculate as the Assistant Director of Advancement, her previous positions include Assistant Director of Annual Giving and Alumni Relations at St. John’s University, Associate Director of Annual Fund Programs at Columbia University and Director of Development, Annual Programs and Alumni Relations at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She joins Immaculate during an exciting time, as it’s celebrating the school’s 60th anniversary and its “Empowering Our Legacy Beyond Today” capital campaign. “I was immediately attracted to the spirit and close knit community at Immaculate,” Calamari said. “I look forward to continuing to build on the school’s incredible legacy so we can position it to excel into the future as well.” Calamari replaces Debbie Basile of Bethel, who has worked at Immaculate for 11 years, most recently as the Director of Advancement. Basile’s children graduated from Immaculate and she has played an integral role in getting the school to where it is today. She will be spending her retirement with family and traveling. “I will miss all my incredible colleagues at Immaculate, the alumni, parents and students that have helped support our community and fundraising efforts over the years,” Basile said. “I know that our mission to secure Immaculate’s future is in good hands and I will definitely be back to visit!” Immaculate’s $4 million capital campaign improvements include replacing the aging turf and track complex for student-athletes, where ground was broken June 6. It also includes other campus improvements and the establishment of a Robert E. Gerwien Sr. Scholarship Endowment Fund. Gerwien was a long time principal at Immaculate.

I

mmaculate High School is proud to announce that five students earned a perfect ACT score in specific subjects. T merit-based scholarships. These students were recognized for their exemplary performance:

Nicole Radliff ‘24 (New Fairfield) Reading & English

Kevin Bailie ‘24 (New Fairfield) Reading

Leanna DeSousa ‘24 (Danbury) Reading

THANK YOU FOR KEEPING US SAFE! DAVE ARCONTI, SR. RETIRES For five years Dave Arconti has served as Immaculate’s first full-time security officer. His responsibilities have included establishing protocols and ensuring they are followed by students, faculty, staff and visitors, planning the various needed drills and trainings, as well as making sure the school’s security infrastructure is always in tip top condition. He was a key member of our Covid-19 school task force. A retired Danbury police detective, Dave brought a highly professional approach to all his duties and his friendly demeanor made him a well-liked and respected member of our family. He worked hand in hand with administrative personnel to institute an effective program from which we will all benefit for years to come. At Immaculate Dave enjoyed the family atmosphere and the students, watching them grow from when they walked through the door as freshman to when they left as seniors and how respectful they are. In retirement he plans to play a little more golf, travel and enjoy spending time with his granddaughter.

Dave’s presence and guidance made everyone feel secure. We will miss him and thank him for his service!

The ACT is used for college admissions and a criteria for awarding

MUSTANGS GIVING BACK

Immaculate students had a total of 20,777 hours of community service this year and many students were honored and/or received scholarships from local community service organizations and the Diocese of Bridgeport for their service and academic achievements.

ANNABELLA TAM ‘26 RECOGNIZES STUDENT STARS IN KENYA

W

hen spring break hit this year, Anabella Tam wasn’t headed to Florida or the Caribbean. Instead, this freshman at Immaculate hopped on a plane to Kenya. “I was most surprised about how happy everyone was,” she said. “I really like the energy there. The children were really nice and happy.” Tam’s mother had been to Kenya three times and wanted to take her daughter to see the country too. A family friend runs the Wahome Foundation, a U.S. based nonprofit that supports educational initiatives in Kenya. So Tam, and her mother Jessie Wong, decided to visit the Mugumo Primary School in Nanyuki, Kenya to put on a Prize Giving Ceremony. The pair stuffed their luggage full of certificates, prizes, notebooks, pencils, motivational books, t-shirts and backpacks to recognize students’ efforts taking their national exams before going to secondary school. “We wanted to support and inspire them,” said Wong. It worked. The more than 600 attendees, including students, parents, teachers, administrators and community members from four local schools had a great time – and Anabella delivered a speech to all of them. “It really made me more grateful for what I have and kind of look at things in a more positive way,” Tam said. Yes, she even had time after the event to go on her first safari!

AVA VIOLA ‘23

Pursuing her Passion

ou could say Ava Viola ‘23 was destined to be a “car nut.”

“When other families watched football on Sundays, we were at the racetrack,” the Sherman resident said. “It became a passion of mine.” Now, the recent Immaculate High School graduate will be attending the only school in the United States that offers motorsports engineering as a major – Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis. Yes, that’s not far from where IndyCar racing is headquartered - and it’s her dream to intern there and then work for Formula 1 Racing someday. Viola’s father owns a racing company and since she was a baby, the family often accompanied him on competitions. These days, this Mustang is officially part of his crew. “I do all the data on cars, make sure they’re running smoothly, plus make sure nobody is racing incorrectly and damaging the cars,” she said. “I also work with drivers to improve by studying the tracks and the correct driveline on them.” Viola will often instruct drivers to “go faster here, slower here, stay inside or outside the track in this specific place” – all to improve their drive times. She will embark on a five-year dual program in the fall, in both motorsports engineering and mechanical engineering and will graduate with a double bachelor’s degree. Viola credits her engineering classes at Immaculate for preparing her well, her college counselor for supporting her passion and her teachers for being so accommodating with her demanding schedule. Last school year, Viola did an internship at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, CT and this year she worked for her father’s race team traveling to Texas, Upstate New York and Florida doing data mapping on all the cars. “I would come back and tell my friends stories about my trips,” she said. “My favorite were the guys’ reactions. A lot of them said ‘Woah, that’s really cool!’” Viola may be the first Immaculate graduate to pursue such a degree – and she was part of Immaculate’s 60th Anniversary graduating class.

I do all the data on cars, make sure they’re running smoothly, plus make sure nobody is racing incorrectly and damaging the cars. 11

T

he Immaculate tradition of fine theatrical performance took another curtain call this year with two very different but equally fine shows.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

A

fter a year on hiatus, the Drama Club brought back the fall drama production with the November dinner theater style presentation of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The classic story of school master Ichabod Crane’s ill-fated courting of the local beauty and his encounters with her other suitor as well as the town’s resident specter, the Headless Horseman, kept audience members on the edge of their seats in an atmosphere of suspense and unease; a chilly tale well-told in the chilly autumn.

Newsies

I

mmaculate’s spring musical, Newsies, a fictionalized story of the 1899 newsboy strike in New York City, played to full houses for three showings on the last weekend of April. In addition to the “David vs Goliath” struggle between the newsboys and the newspaper owners, audiences experienced the newsies’ care for one another and a budding class-crossing romance all delivered with great enthusiasm and gusto. Newsies is known as a dancing show and our cast lived up to the challenge, from epic leaps and tumbles by stand-out performers to the entire ensemble delivering an amazing “King of New York” tap routine.

TYLER TELESCA ‘24

Immaculate Baseball Player is Chosen as Connecticut Children’s All-Star

T

yler Telesca ‘24 is used to throwing a curveball - not getting one. A member of Immaculate’s Baseball Team, during his freshman year he received the surprising news that he has Henoch-Schonlein purpura, a rare disease that affects fewer than 200,000 people annually. The disorder causes vascular inflammation in the joints, skin, kidneys and intestines. His team of doctors at Connecticut Children’s went straight to work helping Telesca. Despite extremely low iron levels and chemotherapy treatments that drained his energy, this Mustang never stopped playing baseball. He also has maintained A’s and B’s during this time and was chosen for the National Honor Society. Now, Telesca is exploring becoming pre-med in college so he can help others – and was chosen by the hospital’s foundation as one of the 2023 Connecticut Children’s All Stars!

Career Day 2023

W

e are grateful to the 30 alumni and friends who presented information about their chosen career paths both virtually and in-person. Every student had the opportunity to attend three breakout sessions discussing a wide variety of careers. Alumni from all over the country shared their experience, advice and expertise with the Mustangs of today. A special thank you to Kevin ‘88 and Laurie Lane, entrepreneurs and owners of Create A Castle, a family-run business that offers patented split molds that build amazingly detailed sand and snow castles both outdoors and indoors. Kevin and Laurie delivered an inspiring keynote address encouraging our students to take chances and trust in God’s plan for their future. We are grateful to all of our distinguished presenters for giving their time and talents to IHS. Once a Mustang, always a Mustang!

W

e kicked off the school year celebrating Immaculate High School’s 60th Anniversary and launching the Empowering Our Legacy Beyond Today $4M campaign.

The campaign goal is to support our aging facilities and to establish a scholarship endowment which will assist with our ability to meet the increasing need to provide tuition scholarships to deserving students. The campaign celebrates and builds upon the rich traditions established by parents, alumni, faculty, staff, administration, friends and community leaders. As a member of the Immaculate High School family, we invite you to partner with us to Empower Our Legacy Beyond Today to make our vision a reality. Your participation will define our Immaculate future and ensure that an exemplary collegepreparatory Catholic education will continue to be available to young men and women. As you reflect on what Immaculate has meant to you and your family, please join us in this historic and critically important initiative by making a gift at a giving level that is comfortable for you. We are deeply grateful for your kind, generous support. For more information, please visit our website at immaculatehs.org/campaign or contact Erin Calamari, Director of Advancement at ecalamari@myimmaculatehs.org 203.744.1510 ext. 159.

For more information, please contact Erin Calamari, Director of Advancement at ecalamari@myimmaculatehs.org or (203) 744-1510 ext. 159.

I grew up in these halls. Immaculate has always felt like family, it felt safe and I formed my moral compass here. My father has just celebrated his 90th birthday and every time he gets to come back or see, as he calls them, “one of his kids” from Immaculate, it just warms his heart and puts some pep in his step. There’s nothing we want more than to see my father’s huge smile knowing that in of honor his 90th birthday we hit the mark of a $1M endowment in his name enabling more of these students to come to Immaculate. - Catherine (Gerwien) Pinto ‘76

My life was enriched by being a part of the Immaculate community. When the Empower Our Legacy Beyond Today campaign was introduced, it felt like the proper way to ensure the next generation has the same opportunity as I did. There is no better place in the Danbury area to combine a challenging curriculum with character development entrenched in faith. - Rob O’Neill ‘91

Dear Mustang Family, There is so much happening at Immaculate! This past year our dedicated and committed community donated over $2M, allowing us to begin to refresh and renew our campus. Generosity of time and resources has been a hallmark of Immaculate from its inception 60 years ago and it continues today. We are so thankful to all of those who help everyday. The magic of Immaculate is the strength and vibrancy of our community. Our parents, alumni and parents of alumni have stepped up so often. It’s humbling and I have enormous gratitude. As Immaculate’s board chairperson I thank our school staff: teachers, administrators, counselors, coaches and support staff. They have made 2022-23 a wonderful school year for us all. We thank Mary Maloney for her nine years of dedication to our school as president. Her commitment and love of all the students, staff and school community cannot be overstated and we will miss her. Our generous board has dedicated many hours of professional resources on behalf of Immaculate. Its work and commitment is a blessing to us all. Thanks to so many, Immaculate continues its legacy with the promise of a very bright future! WIth warm appreciation, Joseph T. Draper ‘82 Board Chairperson

Thank You For Your Leadership! The Immaculate High School Board of Directors was established in July 2021. Its fiduciary role and responsibilities have been instrumental in assisting with strengthening the implementation of the strategic plans set forth by the school. The Board consists of volunteers who are charged with using their professional expertise to assist in spiritual life, finance, development, alumni, athletics, enrollment, facilities and technology. We are thankful for their service during the 2022-23 school year.

He will be headed halfway around the globe to Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan, where he will focus on international law and business. “I chose to study abroad because I want to become an international lawyer and getting experience in another country will help prepare me for the cultural exchange and understanding which I will need in that profession,” Doolabh said. “My counselor at Immaculate, Mr. Michael DiGennaro, was the primary guiding factor in helping me go international as he was always helping me with applications as well as reaching out to me with any information or opportunities he discovered.”

aturday was a great day to be a Mustang! Golden Mustangs, alumni who have celebrated their 50th reunion, shared a very special moment with our newest alumni when they processed with the Class of 2023 at Immaculate’s Commencement Ceremony.

Oh What A Night! Immaculate’s 60th Anniversary All-Alumni Reunion was a wonderful evening of fun and friendship! Alumni from around the country and spanning the decades enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and cocktails while catching up with old friends and perusing the memorabilia tables. Our Mustangs were all smiles at the photobooth, tried their luck at the gaming tables and danced the night away to tunes from two alumni bands! Special thanks to alumni band members Jerry Densk ‘87, Michael Geary ‘81, Jim Lynch ‘88, Liz (Dolce) Lynch ‘81, Michael Lynch ‘80 with a special appearance from Zach Demko ‘19 and a big thank you to Paul Blaszka ‘87 for running the sound board for the bands. We are so grateful to the alumni planning committee for sharing their time and talents to put together such a memorable evening: Jack Bouffard ‘93, Alice (McAleer) Carboni ‘69, Sal Chieffalo ‘81, Jeannie (Coleman) Demko ‘88, Raymond DiPaola ‘79, Deirdre Dolan-Nesline ‘79, Pamela Dolan-Spiewak ‘84, Paulette (Levesque) Hart ‘71, Michael Loya ‘79, Connor McNerney ‘18, Marianne (Urkiel) Mitchell ‘81, Patricia (Stankaitos) O’Neil ‘68, Jo-Anne (Tomanio) Price ‘66, Meg (Losee) Riefberg ‘80, Mark Sanna ‘79, Craig Spiewak ‘85, Martin Tuite ‘84 and Kathy (Mahoney) Wakeford ‘77.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT Craig Spiewak ‘85 & Pamela Dolan-Spiewak ‘84

C

raig Spiewak ‘85 & Pamela Dolan-Spiewak ‘84 truly epitomize what it means to be a Mustang for life. Immaculate has been a part of Pam’s life since 1963 when her parents bought a house down the street from the school and Craig since 1981 when he moved to Connecticut and started at Immaculate.

Pam and Craig became fast friends through their love of basketball, but it wasn’t until a few years after graduating from Immaculate that they began dating. The two married in 1992 and had two daughters, Paige and Allison. They have supported Immaculate and volunteered their time over the years because “IHS embraces a unique set of values centered around faith, respect and family, which equips its students with the skills necessary to navigate the complexities of the modern world. The supportive and caring atmosphere encourages students to uplift and encourage one another, creating lifelong relationships and cherished memories that endure well beyond the halls of the school.” They felt particularly compelled to support the Robert E. Gerwien, Sr. Scholarship Endowment Fund because Mr. Gerwien, former principal for over 30 years, had such a profound impact on them and Immaculate. He was a mentor, principal, father figure and friend to them and everyone he encountered. They share his wish to see Immaculate thrive and be open to all who wish to enter. They are forever grateful for the transformative experience Immaculate provided and hope the values continue to guide and inspire generations of students who pass through the doors now and in the future. “Once a Mustang, always a Mustang.” 63
