imiuoft.ca

Last year was one of getting settled into our new surroundings, the magnificent Innovation Complex. This year has been one of really beginning to exploit these resources, and of seeing the benefits in terms of thriving programs and activities.

It has been both an enormous pleasure, as well as a privilege, to be associated with IMI’s launch. There have been exciting developments on the programmatic front within IMI. Our new 12-month MMPA, designed for graduates of the U of T’s undergraduate accounting specialist programs, launched in the Fall and will soon be graduating its first class. A new Master of Forensic Accounting has been approved by the University and awaits approval by the Province. As well, a highly innovative program with the working title Master of Management of Urban Innovation, which will complement nicely IMI’s other offerings, is in an advanced stage of development. Changes to the structures of our graduate programs mean that all now have a co-op format, and those developments, together with greater focus on the marketing of the programs, has resulted in significant increases in applications all round. As has interest in, and enthusiasm for, ICUBE, which has now established itself with astonishing speed as the go-to location in the western GTA for nurturing and developing business concepts through their earliest stages. It has been both an enormous pleasure, as well as a privilege, to be associated with IMI’s launch. I am confident that its wonderful administrative team, to be led during the forthcoming year by my colleague Professor Pierre Desrochers, will continue to surprise us all with their energy, creativity and inexhaustible capacity to get things done, and that as a result IMI will continue from strength to strength.

Best Wishes, Hugh Gunz, Director Institute for Management & Innovation

The carefully selected combination of courses, coupled with relevant industry experience and a strong focus on teamwork, provides our graduates with a truly interdisciplinary educational experience at a world-renowned university. Our students come to the program with a strong work ethic, and learn to operate effectively in teams and develop their leadership skills. They also gain excellent opportunities to build communications skills through frequent presentations to their class, and to the wider community. Innovative thinking and entrepreneurship are actively encouraged. When our students graduate, a host of opportunities await them.

MMI

Institute for Management & Innovation / Annual Review 2015 • 2016

Master of Management of Innovation

The MMI Program is an accelerated professional degree which focuses on the management of the innovation process and the diffusion of new technologies. The MMI courses provide a strong foundation in economic analysis, technology management, business strategy, finance and marketing. The program provides knowledge, skills and strategic perspectives required for leaders and senior managers responsible for managing the innovation process. This is done through small classes and research seminars that support interactive learning and maximum student faculty dialogue. This year, we introduced a mandatory internship requirement to the MMI. The internship is mandatory in order to be eligible for graduation and is completed during the final four months of the program. The goal of our internship term is to allow students to gain valuable, real-world work experience and an opportunity to demonstrate the key competencies the MMI program has taught them.

The MMPA program is the only program dedicated to developing both MBA and Professional Accounting knowledge and skills in an integrated framework. An MBA learning experience develops analytical skills and caseoriented reasoning capacities, and an MMPA learning experience develops technical knowledge and application skills. The MMPA is designed to be the most time-concentrated Master’s level gateway to Professional Accounting and financial markets employment, particularly for students graduating from non-business programs. Advanced standing is available for business students.

OUR ALUMNI

THE EDUCATION of KILLULARK (LAURA) ARNGNA’NAAQ Former MMPA student breaks new ground

Working in downtown Toronto, Killulark (Laura) Arngna’naaq is thousands of miles from her home community of Baker Lake, Nunavut. But the young Inuk doesn’t see a daunting mass of buildings. Rather she sees opportunities for social development as the Accounting Manager for Habitat for Humanity GTA. Arngna’naaq is one of the few Inuk Chartered Accountants in Canada. She graduated from Trent University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 2011 and was the first Indigenous student to be accepted into the prestigious Master of Management and Professional Accounting (MMPA) program at the University of Toronto. She completed her Master’s degree in 2013 and achieved all her professional qualifications in 2015. “I was the first Aboriginal to graduate from the MMPA program, which is cool,” said Arngna’naaq. Although she found it to be a very challenging program, Arngna’naaq believes it changed her perspective because of just how rigorous it was. “The academic skills developed through the MMPA programming completely changed who I was as a person; I find myself thinking back to class and drawing from that in my current job.”

While she is based in Toronto and has lived in southern Ontario since 2000, Arngna’naaq has worked diligently to stay connected to her Inuit roots: she taught herself to carve soapstone, and worked on her Inuktitut language skills through self-study and by auditing an Inuktitut course at the University of Toronto. Arngna’naaq is even building a kayak in her few spare hours and is now learning the traditional Inuit game of throat singing. She also volunteers for organizations serving Indigenous people and has taken on the challenge of bringing awareness of Inuit heritage and history to her financial sector colleagues.

The academic skills developed through the MMPA programming completely changed who I was as a person; I find myself thinking back to class and drawing from that in my current job.

IMI in the Headlines SPEAKER SERIES This year the Institute for Management & Innovation (IMI) launched its first Speaker Series featuring various IMI cross-appointed faculty. The first session was presented by Professor Sonia Kang from the Department of Management, entitled “Diversity and Discrimination in the Job Market,” where she spoke about her research on organizational diversity practices and “résumé whitening.” The series is free and happens three times a year, giving attendees an opportunity to learn about faculty research while providing a forum for them to join in the dialogue. All events, hosted by IMI, will be held in one of the lecture halls in the Innovation Complex, and are open to all UTM faculty, staff, students, alumni and the broader Mississauga community.

NEW TO IMI Laurel Besco

Assistant Professor, Geography

Professor Besco completed her PhD in Law at the University of Ottawa. Her teaching philosophy is that diversity and integration of ideas, materials, and methods in the classroom is the best way for students to learn and feel engaged. Her research is interdisciplinary and uses law and policy to generate and evaluate creative solutions to pressing environment and sustainability issues. In 2016 Professor Besco was awarded a SSHRC IDG for her research project entitled “Engendering the Production of Corporate Environmental Norms: Implications for Achieving Energy Efficiency Targets.

Laura Derksen

Assistant Professor, Health Economics

Professor Derksen has a PhD in economics from the London School of Economics. Her research investigates barriers to health care use in the developing world. In her strategy courses, she encourages students to find real world examples of firm strategy based on economic theory, and engage in intelligent, open and respectful class discussion. Professor Derksen is proud to be part of an academic community that values diversity, innovation and the open exchange of ideas.

Ruben Gaetani

Assistant Professor, Strategic Management

Professor Gaetani joined IMI after receiving a PhD in Economics from Northwestern University. He will teach a class in Management of Technology in the Winter session at UTM. His research explores the connection between innovation and macroeconomic trends, and the implications of technology and science for aggregate economic outcomes. In his opinion, U of T and UTM are privileged spots to observe how technology can improve our lives. Indeed, passion for change is what he likes to convey to his students, by challenging them to think beyond what they already know.

R. Christopher Small Assistant Professor, Accounting

Professor Small is an Assistant Professor of Accounting at the University of Toronto. His research interests focus on the relation between accounting information and economic fundamentals as well as the economic and behavioral factors that influence the disclosure of accounting information by managers and the use of accounting information by market participants. Professor Small serves as co-editor of the Harvard Law School Forum on Corporate Governance and Financial Regulation and as an ad hoc reviewer for Contemporary Accounting Research. He holds CPA and CGMA designations in the United States. Prior to obtaining his PhD from the University of Iowa, he worked as a tax manager at Deloitte.
