T

his has been an exciting year for IMI. On July 1st, 2013, we officially came into being with no offices, a group of (highly successful) programs scattered across the campus, a lot of enthusiasm and not much else besides.

A year later, our five graduate and two undergraduate degree programs are housed in the superb new Innovation Complex. As you’ll read in this, our first annual report, we now have 1,300 students studying in these programs, taught by an IMI faculty of 73 world-leading scholars and professionals who combine their IMI teaching and research with their primary roles in a multidisciplinary array of departments across the University’s three campuses. All of this activity is supported by more than two dozen dedicated staff. We have put on academic and professional conferences, as well as a dizzying array of events for our students and the community. Nor are we stopping there. We have plans to add to our graduate programs, and we’re in the process of setting up I-CUBE, our business accelerator that will stimulate and nurture a spirit of entrepreneurship amongst UTM’s students. IMI programs are united by a single unifying concept: we produce mission-ready managers, from programs that combine the experiential teaching of management with that of a particular science, industrial sector or profession. Currently these include (at the graduate level) professional accounting, biomedical communications, biotechnology, innovation, and sustainability, but we plan to add more. IMI is, in other words, a business school with a difference. This first year has been pivotal in shaping the future for this innovative institute and I look forward to our next steps as we build on this successful launch.

OUR NEWEST FACULTY This year we have expanded our pool of talented faculty to include four new cross-appointed professors.

MATTHEW OSBORNE Marketing

Matthew holds a PhD in Economics from Stanford University and a BA in Mathematics and Economics from the University of Western Ontario. He is a believer that students should be exposed to state-ofthe art research to aid their learning and skills.

DUSHYANTKUMAR VYAS Accounting

Dr. Vyas has a PhD in Accounting from the University of Toronto and a Masters in Finance from Queen’s University. He loves teaching at UTM because it is a two-way stream where students challenge him everyday and teach him something new as well.

ABRAHAM IQBAL Taxation

Prior to teaching, Abraham was a Senior Manager at Ernst and Young LLP and an Executive Director of Taxation at Fairmont Raffles International Inc. His experience includes teaching at the Rotman School of Management, the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada, and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario.

CULTIVATING LEADERS

The Institute for Management & Innovation (IMI) is ready for the future. A primary focus on innovation will help students develop the knowledge, creativity, collaboration skills and leadership abilities to take bright ideas – theirs and others – and put them into action.

The Institute offers professional master’s programs in biotechnology, biomedical communications, accounting, innovation and sustainability - and undergraduate programs in accounting, finance, marketing, and human resource management, along with a new PhD certificate program in professional development. These programs will be housed in the new Innovation Complex, a four-story facility that lets students in different programs learn with and from each other through shared courses, joint projects, and mutual study and social spaces. “The typical structure within a university is to divide into manageable units as departments, but this (siloing) often means that expertise across departments is not widely shared,” says Ulrich Krull, Vice-Principal of Special Initiatives at UTM and the person who proposed the Institute. “IMI and the Innovation Complex encourage the elimination of silos so that communication across key sectors, such as management, can be facilitated.” IMI inaugural Director Hugh Gunz says the initiative will ultimately bolster Mississauga’s economic development. “We’re seeking to help Mississauga advance new partnerships in the business community, attract international talent and compete on a global scale.”

08

IMI Launch June 11, 2014. On hand for the launch were Mayor Hazel McCallion of the City of Mississauga and U of T’s VicePresident of Advancement David Palmer. “IMI graduates will apply their multidisciplinary knowledge to the sectors that are driving today’s growth,” said Professor Deep Saini, Vice-President, University of Toronto and Principal, U of T Mississauga. “This signature institute will generate new knowledge, build on our core professional programs and foster a culture of innovation.” “At the University of Toronto Mississauga, we recognize the important role that innovation plays in the global knowledge economy,” said Professor Hugh Gunz, IMI’s inaugural Director. “In IMI, we have created a better ecosystem for training future innovators, entrepreneurs and managers who are essential for sustainable prosperity in our region. Our graduates will have the capacity to invent, innovate and transform new ideas into practical solutions for the Mississauga community and beyond,” Gunz said.

2014 “It is imperative that we take a proactive role in growing and nurturing a highly skilled and talented labour force that promotes and supports innovation in business and education,” said McCallion. “The result will be a community with an and investment from around the world.” The launch featured a panel discussion on innovation and competitiveness with Dr. Howard Alper, chair of Canada’s Science, Technology and Innovation Council; Dr. Ilse Treurnicht, CEO of the MaRS Discovery District; and Dr. Jason Field, president and CEO of Life Sciences Ontario. “U of T and the City of Mississauga share a dynamic partnership that has evolved over more than 40 years, and has helped create one of the most vibrant communities in Canada,” said President Meric Gertler. “Together, we are developing a framework for innovation to foster economic growth and build a great future for Mississauga”. “Beyond the borders of this campus, IMI will build a competitive advantage for regional and national industries,” Saini added. “That is the key to prosperity in the 21st century, and UTM is poised to play its part.”

DIFA

Diploma in Investigative & Forensic Accounting

Plans for modifying the DIFA Program into a Master of Forensic Accounting (MFAcc) are underway. DIFA alumni have been surveyed and are extremely supportive, with 63 indicating their desire to upgrade their DIFA to an MFAcc. In addition, the DIFA program has been accepted as the educational preparation for the new professional designation for forensic accountants, the CFF However, negotiations to arrive at the transfer from a Canadian designation, the CA•IFA to the CFF, which were undertaken by Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada, have taken several years and many applicants chose to wait during this transition period. As a result, an entering class was not enrolled in 2014. Since the first DIFA class graduated in 2003, the program has graduated 266 alumni.
