YOUR MARCHING ORDERS

C

ontinue to do as you are told until you receive further orders. Serious memo to follow.

That is all. This is serious folks. We have a full year; three hundred and some odd days, minus two months, more or less, in which to YACHITE! Sure, to most of us it’s just another “Here we go again, filling these precious moments with… with you know, more precious moments.” But can you imagine how many REGULAR folks might wonder “Just who are these YACHITE people and what do they do?” I have no idea, but off hand I’ll bet there are quite a few. So it is to them, those curious few, to which we owe at least a sincere effort to maintain the lofty image. First off, let’s start with the basics. How are your Topsiders? Broken in and properly scuffed? Leather laces tied in a square knot? Both of them? Then there’s the socks / no socks thing that you will have to work out in private. There is no right or wrong way, just make up your mind and be consistent... or not. I have strong feelings about this, but I would be the last to use this bully pulpit to foist my opinion on

you. After all we are Yachters, and Yachters never foist!! Next, let’s consider the navy blue blazer. A little historical note here; Back in 1994 when Dick Locke was Commodore of SBYC, he proposed that “the wearing of a navy blue blazer be banned within 50 feet of our club house.” A vote was taken the following day and it was decided to ban Dick Locke. He and Carol left at noon that day for an around the world cruise and only recently (the statute of limitation having run out) rejoined our ranks. So you see these things can backfire on you. (Just kidding, Dick and Carol) Actually, the blue blazer has earned its place in the well dressed SBYC’ers wardrobe if for no other reason than the position of the left breast (hanky) pocket where you mount the gold embroidered South Beach Yacht Club crest. Name tags

should be worn on the right (starboard) side horizontal to the… you know… the pocket. Personally, I don’t think shoulder epaulets would be out of place - nor would white gloves - but that’s matter for another article. Also, blazers are equal opportunity garments and could be worn by both women and men with skirts or slacks… that is… men in kilts; you know. Which begs the question: How come we have never had a decent bagpipe dance band at the club? Carry on, ‘til next month…

arch is our kick-off for the board to implement changes resulting from the annual survey blended along with goals of the long term strategy committee. Tom Rogers, Bruce Wicklund and Roger Ladwig are researching the replacement of our aging POS system. This involves visiting other yacht clubs and comparing notes. This endeavor will be a big chunk of our budget in 2015 and any expertise on club management software amongst the members is welcome. In a fresh move for SBYC, I will be attending BAADS board meetings to represent the Club and to better understand how we can mutually support our goals on the water and in the Clubhouse. At this time they are actively seeking grant supported US Sailing certified instructors pass the word on to fellow sailors. We are off to a great start this year with lots of activities. Come chat with us at the SBYC booth April 10 and 11th at the Strictly Sail Pacific Show in Jack London Square. Even better, volunteer to man the booth and recruit potential new members! Contact membership chair Lynda Maybruck before the event for a time slot. Great event for new gear! Paul Janofsky and crew will have Anabel dressed up and ready for her Sunday April 26th Opening Day on the Bay dance card in the annual

parade and blessing of the fleet. I encourage you to register your boat in the parade as well and show the San Francisco shoreline what we are made of! There is a trophy at stake! Our Rear Commodore Gerard Sheridan has ambitious waterfront plans - including introducing a Club hosted Invitational Regatta to be held in late May. Look for more details in Gerard’s reports and online. I would like to take this small opportunity to thank all those who have stepped up to volunteer. It’s great to see so many of you willing to help out. Speaking of stepping up, Bruce MacDiarmid is our new Chairman of the Board! John Prouty, Patti Mangan and Cat Reining are the PICYA Delegates, attending monthly informational dinner meetings at various yacht clubs in the Bay Area. Speaking of parties, Suzy Fay and Ken Ludlum will be planning four to six dining and dance parties for us all! There are rumors of a powerboat fishing derby in May - dust off your fishing gear and get your edge up on the fishing channel! Peruse the cruise out calendar Allen Maybruck has so carefully crafted with you in mind. We encourage our power boaters and sailors alike to register for a cruise out! Karen and I have been doing cruise outs for many years and love them. Great to see so many of you willing to help out. See you at the club.

VICE COMMODORE’S REPORT

B

ig thanks to Susan and Chris Nelson for giving us an outstanding Mardi Gras / Crawfish soirée on sweet Valentines Day… Joie de Vivre! More joy was had by those OOD’s who attended the Appreciation Day on Feb. 28. Observing the level of fun, it is no wonder our club fun-ometer is pegged at the high end most all the time. We picked up a few bar tending tips from Julia, a MoMo’s bartender who was kind enough to share some of her trade secrets. Big big thanks to our talented and dedicated OOD’s and to Hugh, our superlative HOOD. Also, kudos to Mr. D for keeping us on pace! Let’s talk about March events for a moment, a cruise-in for the SF Nordic Tugs, a huge member meeting with a St. Patty’s theme, another cruise in or two… and on Sunday, March 22nd a Blue Ribbon Fashion Show, hosted by Paula Asuano and designed for the ladies who love shape wear! I offered to model until I

understood the er... particulars. Join in as Paula is raising funds for our Jr. Sailing Program with the proceeds. March came in like a lamb however, the way I see it, April is coming in like a Lion. Our Easter Sunday Brunch, hosted by Suzy Fay, on the 5th, is taking reservations now for two seatings. Expect another super member meeting on Friday the 10th, and a casual Corinthian YC Cruisein on Saturday the 11th. We have a bit of twist on the Giants’ Season Opener, the game is on Monday the 13th at 1:15pm, so come on in. Our SBYC Giants opener will be Friday April 17th along with our hungry FNS racers. First pitch 7:15pm. Be prepared to wear your best fan garb and stick around for the post game fireworks. The Solano YC Cruise-in gang is in for a big crowd surprise! Another April biggie: on Opening Day the 26th, once again, Staff

Commodore Bob Mason, for the 17th year in a row…Oyster Festo! Some real bivalve fun and a kick off for the sailing and boating season. Be sure to check the calendar for details on all these events and register early. Regarding May, a few clues: Cinco de something, Mom, Texas hold’em, some dancing, and of course some fun. And now, a number of things around the club. We continue to find ways to keep the club looking good and ship shape to the standards we all have learned to expect and appreciate. This includes our public areas, the kitchen, the office, deck, BBQ, windows, chairs, tables the works... If you have ideas, comments or questions please do not hesitate to chase me down. Cheers —Milt the Man

SPLICE THE MAINBRACE

5

SBYC was just 5 years old when I joined, but already it’s culture was rock solid, like it is today: a group of cool people, joined together by their love of being on the water and of having a good time off the water, and who volunteer each in their own way to make SBYC the best little yacht club on the Bay. Within a few weeks I was an OOD and within a year I had my first go-around as the HOOD – hey, it was a pretty small club way back then… anybody could be anything they wanted! So here we are, over 20 years later, and once again I get to select, train and schedule the 100 club members who are the most amazing group of volunteers anyone could ever be so privileged to serve. These are the members who take the duty of opening our club, serving at the bar and being our ‘Officer of the Day’ responsibilities seriously. They truly deserve our thanks and appreciation every time we’re in the Club because, without them, we would have no Club! So, while we appreciate our OOD’s every single day, once a year we hold our OOD Appreciation Day. And it’s really not just a party! This year we started by inviting Julia, a bartender at our friendly neighborhood bar MoMo’s, to demo some bar tips and tricks – we all learned something! Then Chris Nelson demo’d how he

50 SHADES OF SOUTH BEACH

Winning cocktail by Marcia, Eleanor, Wendy, Terry, Toni, Cat and Chris. makes Cosmos, Lemon Drops and Mojitos and Susie Fay demo’d two versions of our own SBYC Espressotini. So ask your OOD for one of these delicious cocktails next time you’re in the Club! After some wine-tasting and a delicious lunch served by Chef John and his great kitchen staff, we held our infamous Cocktail Contest, using only weird alcohol ingredients (Peanut Butter & Jelly vodka anyone?). This event, judged by (mostly) unimpeachable Officers and Staff Commodores, brought out win-at-all-costs competition among

our normally mild-mannered OOD’s. In the end, long after several OOD’s had retired to their boats for a little nap, the winning cocktail was “50 Shades of South Beach” concocted by the proud team pictured here, Marcia, Eleanor, Wendy, Terry, Toni, Cat and Chris. Please join me in saying a huge thank you to all our OOD’s for what they do for our club. And please say your own thank you the next time (and everytime) you’re at the bar! Splice the mainbrace, y’all!

e have a number of training/educational events coming up in March and April. On March 17th we have a presentation by John Super on best practices for setting race marks/buoys. With the addition of the Ed Macken RIB in recent years we have greater capacity and resources to run better races for our members and for visiting fleets and classes. Setting good courses is a vital part of staging quality racing and the effective placement of marks on the course under the direction of the Principal Race Officer is a valuable skill for Race Committee Volunteers. John Super has a lot of experience in this area and I’m delighted he’s agreed to do this and the follow-up practical on the water training also (which will be a follow-up event). I’m also pleased to announce that my tactician for the 2014 Rolex Big Boat Series, Chris Boome will be doing an evening on Race Tactics for Friday Night Racing on April 9th. Chris has an impressive racing resume spanning 55 years in everything from El Toro’s, Finn’s OK dinghy, Lasers, Etchells and more. His current boat is a J32 which he races in our Friday Night Series. He placed 3rd in the 1976 Laser World Championship in Bermuda. Chris races his Laser on the Bay and is active in the local fleet. He’s had an interesting career, working for Barient Winches for 15 years starting in the 70’s. Today, he runs his own Insurance agency called Chris Boome Insurance Agency in Burlingame. We’ll stage more educational events throughout the year so if you have a particular idea please let me know. Registration is now open for all our Cruise Outs so please check the schedule on the website under the On The Water menu.

REGISTER FOR JUNIOR SAILING CAMP! Registration is open! Many of you mentor kids in the community. If you’d like to propose a child for our (limited openings) scholarship program please send your proposal to rearcommodore@southbeachyachtclub.org and your request will be routed to the Adult & Junior Dinghy Committee for consideration.

Cruise-Out to Sequoia Yacht Club Dispatch

Dispatches from the Fleet on the occasion of SBYC’s 2015 first cruise-out to Sequoia Y.C. indicate the affair was a true demonstration of how our Bay can show her finery. Spring-like weather and mill-pond conditions prevailed. As a ‘3 hour tour’ of moderate time and distance, every opportunity was taken to check onboard systems, a valuable exercise in preparation for an active cruise season. One of the cool things about San Francisco Bay is that cruising season is all year long! We want to extend our warmest gratitude to Kristen, James and the crew at Sequoia for their festive Valentine reception and for their attentive help in getting the boats squared away. Once secure, it was time to party. Dockside socializing, cool libations at the bar and a conversation answering the question: Are we, as Bay People, part of the problem or part the solution? Consensus: We are part of the solution…cheers! David & Lee Baldi stopped by as did Mike & Lorrianna Kastrop to raise a glass and share good times! Alan & Lynda Maybruck hosted a wonderful dinner and a delicious Sunday breakfast aboard their beautiful SV Chance. As it is readily evident to us new members, lively and intelligent, often hilarious conversation is a common feature at SBYC gatherings. This is a great bunch of people and we are very glad to have joined the Club! If interested in upcoming cruise outs, please sign up on the Club website or contact us at diveryates@yahoo. com or 415-806-7619 to sign up. Drive-ins are always welcome too! —Roy & Laurie Yates, MV Lorelei

LY N D A ’ S T I P S U P PLEASE WELCOME OUR NEW MEMBERS!

YOU’RE NEVER TOO OLD

SHANNON & ERIC BRUMM Having sailed the Bay since 2004, sailing has become a central part of their family, and find themselves sailing 2-3 weekends each month. Beside their common stops to Tiburon and Angel Island, a few times a year they are out the Gate to Monterey or shorter trips to Napa. They very much enjoy cruising and hope SBYC will expand their knowledge of the Bay and beyond. They are energetic and anxious to jump in to volunteer activities. PHIL GRUELL started sailing small sloops on coastal waters of Southern California. On our Bay he has raced lasers with the St. Francis in the 80’s; and has crewed racing 23-55’ sloops and even the Farr 5’ Amazing Grace. He now owns a center console Montauk 19’ Whaler kept in SB Marina. Phil has enjoyed our club as a guest for over a year and looks forward to the opportunity for friendship with other boating enthusiasts. He loves the spirit of SBYC and is eager to contribute as an active member. He’s planning to take boating safety courses and obtain a skippers license.

ROB WORLEY Sailing for more than 20 years, Rob is now a co-owner on a Catalina 34. He is proficient at small power boat handling and has been a water ski instructor. He has participated in many FNS races and is looking at the Jr Sailing Program for his son. He’s anxious to get involved and contribute, especially in family activities.

PAUL OSBORN In addition to sailing and racing Savior Faire, Paul, one of our founding members, is beginning his sixth season as a Masters Track and Field Athlete. During 2014 he competed in the long jump, triple jump, 50m and 100m sprints as well as the 4x100m relay, a total of twenty-four events at seven meets. Paul took sixteen gold metals, five silvers, and a bronze. He qualified for the National Senior Olympic Games, to be held in Minneapolis-St. Paul this year, and earned All-American honors from USA Track & Field for the third consecutive year.

CRUISE-OUT TO MEXICO Rumor has it, there was a cruise-out to Mexico! You see, SBYC members started chatting about enjoying a cruise together at the bar. Before you knew it, seven SBYC couples were dining and wine tasting aboard the Star Princess as it set sail from San Francisco to ports south for 10 days. Members on the cruise were Pat & Richard Forst, Commodore Barrie & Karen Wheeler (and friends), Vice Commodore Milt & Carol Smith (and friends), Pete & Louise Hamm, Bill & Ruthie Palmer, and Paul & Judith Janofsky. Ports of call were Cabo San Lucas, La Paz, Loreto and Puerto Vallarta. We couldn't have asked for better weather. The highlight for Paul, Milt and Carol was swimming with the whale sharks in La Paz. Other Ports of Call included shopping, wandering and enjoying fresh guacamole and salty margaritas! Most of us wandered off the ship around 10:00 am or so to check out the town. Not Pete and Louise! They got off the ship at some ungodly hour and we would find them wandering back to the ship as we were just disembarking. How they were so chipper in the morning is beyond me.

After dinner there was always a first rate show in the theatre. At some point, most of us were done for the evening, but if we weren't ready for sweet dreams, we never were lonely. We could always find Barrie and Karen at their SBYC designated bar stool in the Crooner Lounge. After nearly the entire SBYC crew cashed it in for the night, Richard and Pat were just getting warmed up. They would dance the night away putting the rest of us to shame. JUDITH JANOFSKY You would think that all of these experienced How quickly rituals take over in just sailors would a few short days. THE SBYC BOTTOMLINE GOOD NEWS ALL AROUND

We closed 2014 with positive net income. However, we were still below our goal for the year. But our cash position and financial strength improved over the previous year 2013. Here is a summary of our performance for the year 2014: • Total Net Income over $15,400 (about $8000 below budget) • Total cash on hand $238,600 (including our mandated reserves of $179,500), and $27,500 above 2013. • We outperformed our budget in Bar, Food and Club Rental revenue and income. The Club is being used efficiently which is a good thing. • We were under budget on Special Event and Member Dues income and were significantly over budget on expenses for Janitor Service, and Facilities and Fleet Maintenance • Our Capital expenditures were $20,000 less than planned (which resulted in the increase in cash) The complete financial results are available on our website under Club Business section in the Members Portal for those interested. Located there as well is the Board proposed budget for 2015. Voting was held during the members meeting on March 13th and approved. NEW PAYMENT CHOICES

Shenanigans on the Star Princess Cruise

We now have a couple of automatic payment options for you to use to pay your club statements. One is an automated Debit Option. This option allows you to authorize SBYC to automatically debit your savings or checking account monthly for the amount due on your statement. Once you authorize SBYC, you will never have to write a check or initiate a payment again, unless

you withdraw the authorization. The other option is an automatic Credit Card charge. It works just like the automated debit program, but your authorized credit card gets auto charged for the amount due. Every month you will receive your club statement via email. If there are concerns, just email treasurer@southbeachyachtclub.org or sbycbookkeeper@gmail.com and we will address them. On the 3rd Monday of the month, we will debit funds due from your bank account or charge them to your credit card, if you have set them up. There are no fees or other actions required. Authorization forms for either of these options are available on the website in the Club Business section in the Member’s Portal. In review - please pay your invoices with any of these options: Check or Cash PayPal Credit Card Automatic Debit Should you have any questions on these or other club financial issues, please feel free to discuss.
