Vocational special needs teacher education in HAMK • •

Training program is provided on a 60 credits professional development program The admission requirement is for applicants to be qualified to teach vocational studies or core subjects. In addition, they are required to have one year (12 months) of full-time teaching or guidance counselling experience at a vocational institution or a university of applied sciences. Special needs teaching roles in the VET sector (vocational institutions, vocational special education institutions, universities of applied sciences) 45 new students every year

The training program Special needs pedagogy Studies in vocational pedagogy Teaching practice Implementation of a development project The learning environment for special needs student teachers consists of practical operating environments at educational institutions, in workplaces and multidisciplinary networks (distance learning periods) and supervised learning situations at the professional Teacher Education Unit or partner institutions (direct contact teaching periods). • The work of special needs teacher emphasis multidisciplinary cooperation. • • • • •

A key aspect of working in the vocational special needs education field is to identify individual needs Preparing lessons and resources Assessing work Developing and adapting conventional teaching methods to meet the individual needs of students Special teaching methods Using special equipment and facilities to stimulate interest in vocational learning Using specialist skills collaborating with the vocational teacher to define appropriate activities for the students in relation to the curriculum assessing students who have long or short-term learning difficulties and working with colleagues to identify individual students special needs; Liaising with other professionals, such as social workers and educational psychologists, student welfare officer Liaising closely with parents Cooperation with employers and workplace supervisors Organising learning outside the classroom, like in work placement period Behaviour management Assessmenting Personal study plan Recearch (special needs pedagogy)
