Introduction

Happy New Year, and welcome to our latest Arts programme, which is full of exciting events to cheer us through the winter and spring. The Larkin Toads may have gone, along with Larkin 25, but we can look forward to Stephen Sondheim, Shakespeare, Mahler, Natalie Clein, Gilbert and Sullivan, Kate Mosse, and The Telephone, a miniature opera by Menotti, – entertainment worthy of the best London venues, but all at Hull prices, and easily accessible on and around the University campus. Don’t miss our wonderful series of Student Showcases, or the second half of our world class chamber music series, but if you prefer Jazz and Pop there are more informal, relaxed events for you too. A version of the Venice carnival comes to the city in May, and if you’re feeling political, come to our evening of ‘Fighting Back: An Arts and Humanities Response to the Government Cuts.’ There really is something here for everyone (and if you’re missing the Toads, we still have one, secreted away in the Business School...). Professor Valerie Sanders, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

The Arts Programme is produced by iHull: Institute for Creativity and Innovation (Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Hull). iHull was established in September 2009 to coordinate and professionalise the creative and cultural offering of the University. The institute is committed to working in partnership with the creative sector in the Yorkshire and Humber region to support, nurture and develop the region's digital and cultural industries. iHull wish to thank everyone who has participated in putting the Arts programme together and in providing the content for this publication. Should you have any comments on the Arts Programme or any suggestions on how we might be able to improve the programme in the future please do not hesitate to contact us. www.ihull.org ihull@hull.ac.uk 01482 462045
