(Higgins, USA, 1980)

A comedy film, directed by Colin Higgins (Foul Play, 1978; Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, 1982), 9 to 5 tells the story of a group of women (Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton, and Jane Fonda) who fight for – and achieve – liberation from a boss who is (in their words) a ‘sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot’, and also liberate their co-workers by reorganizing their working environment and turning it into a supportive, egalitarian place. Presented by Dr Amy Davis.

“ I may have lost my heart, but not my self-control.” Austen’s most challenging heroine, Emma Woodhouse, is also her most engaging. As part of the Beverley Literature Festival, Film Historian Dr Amy Davis will be marking the 200th anniversary of the publication of Jane Austen’s Emma with an exploration of the title character as she has appeared on the big screen, comparing several film versions of this well-loved classic novel. A partnership between the University of Hull, Wordquake and Beverley Film Society.

A libertine is one devoid of most moral restraints, which are seen as unnecessary or undesirable, especially one who ignores or even spurns accepted morals and forms of behaviour sanctified by the larger society. Libertines put value on physical pleasures, meaning those experienced through the senses. As a philosophy, libertinism gained new-found adherents in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, particularly in France and Great Britain.

HOW TO PUBLISH A NOVEL IN LESS TIME THAN IT TOOK TO FIGHT THE TROJAN WAR WITH D D JOHNSTON

This recital by tenor Austin Gunn will show the responses of Reynaldo Hahn, Hugo Wolf, Roger Quilter and Benjamin Britten, among others, to the works of libertine poets John Wilmot, Paul Verlaine, Theophile de Viau and Lord Byron. Austin Gunn performs frequently as a soloist at venues throughout Europe in the majority of oratorio and concert repertoire. He made his operatic debut as Vorsinger (Zaide) with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in the Edinburgh International Festival, and has since worked extensively with major opera companies including Scottish Opera and English National Opera. 2.30pm: Vocal masterclass. Observers welcome.

Thursday 15 October, 6.30 pm Brynmor Jones Library – TBC Cost: Free Enquiries: fass-events@hull. ac.uk or 01482 462045 Homeless and with a job at Manchester Bus Station, D D Johnston looked up to the 8th floor of an abandoned tower block and saw a baby being bottlefed. It triggered the idea for a novel – just out as The Secret Baby Room. First he had to learn to write. This entertaining and informative event shows how to turn your life into literature. D D Johnston is ‘one of this country’s most principled novelists and also one of the most versatile and talented’ – The Morning Star. He runs onlinewritingtips.com Booksigning to follow

D D Johnston’s The Secret Baby Room is a tense and compelling psychological thriller. Johnston offers us a wonderfully gripping read, but also a compassionate and moving story of people struggling to survive at the margins of a rapidly changing city. Crime Culture

The members of Artea met whilst studying at the Royal Academy of Music in London in 2001. After studies with the Amadeus, Alberni and Wihan quartets they went on to forge a successful career, winning many awards and performing at festivals throughout the U.K. including the BBC Proms, and at venues such as the Wigmore Hall and Purcell Room as well as live broadcasts for BBC Radio 3.

Violinist Thomas Gould is one of a new generation of classical musicians who refuses to be defined by a single genre. The Guardian

Francisco Coll: Hyperlude IV

Much of this recital programme borrows from Gould’s 2014 solo album, also called Bach to Parker. His intention in interspersing movements of solo Bach with brand new works for solo violin was to show that the extended violin techniques called upon by living composers had evolved from the demanding contrapuntal writing of Bach, whose mighty ‘Chaconne’ is considered as the summit of the solo violin repertoire.

In this talk, Dr Williams will examine the ways in which UK hip-hop engages with the country’s colonial past.

In this workshop by saxophonist Jesse Bannister, students from Music at Hull will explore idioms of Indian music on western instruments.

This is an interview. This is an intervention.

They will be supported by Bannister’s newly-developed ‘Groove India’ app, which was released in 2012 in collaboration with Leeds College of Music and designed to assist with teaching, learning and practising, and will be demonstrated as part of the workshop. Jesse Bannister is a unique musician who is respected as the leading Indian saxophonist in Europe. His album Play Out received universal critical acclaim, described by Northern Jazz News as displaying ‘a wide palette of colours and emotions; strongly melodic and filled with engaging twists and turns’. He has composed music for the Hallé Orchestra as well as film, TV, theatre and dance productions. 2.30pm: Groove workshop led by Rowan Oliver, Lecturer in Music at the University of Hull and leading session drummer. Observers welcome.

This is an interrogation. We’re recording now. We want to pull its plug out. We want to stop its heartbeat. We want to blow its brains out and begin again. We know exactly what we’re doing.

You are invited to join Hull Chamber Music for a relaxed evening of dinner and chamber music, with a variety of guest artists, including acclaimed trumpet soloist Simon Desbruslais, who also stars later in the series with the Brook Street Band. Brynmor Jones Library – TBC

Singing a cappella or unaccompanied in choirs means that the tuning of individual notes is left to the discretion of singers, and the normal tendency is for tuning not to be in equal temperament (the way a modern keyboard is tuned); rather it is much closer to just temperament where the harmonics of individual notes are in tune. This has an important implication for the overall tuning of a piece of music, which must drift in pitch unless something is deliberately done to prevent it. This facet of a cappella singing will be introduced and demonstrated using the author’s Vocal Tract Organ: a playable instrument that is based on 3-D printed vocal tracts for different vowels. Dr Evis Sammoutis is a composer whose practice-led research is mainly focused on the functionality of timbre and its relation to other domains of musical organisation as well as ‘extended’ instrumental techniques. Most of his compositions explore the relationship between timbre and harmony and the development of instrumental characteristics into musical substance, frequently using unorthodox methods of playing musical instruments. Sammoutis has been based in his homeland of Cyprus for the past few years, taking a position at the European University

Haydn: String Quartet Op.71 No.2 Saint-Saens: String Quartet No.2 Schubert: String Quartet in D minor ‘Death and the Maiden’ 6.30pm, Conference Room 3: Pre concert talk by Professor Brian Newbould Established in 1946, The Fine Arts Quartet are among the most acclaimed string quartets in the world. They have been called the ‘Dream Team’ and were declared by the Washington Post as ‘one of the gold-plated names in chamber music’. But these statements seem inadequate when you consider American first violinist Ralph Evans was a prizewinner in the International Tchaikovsky Competition, the

Cyprus and also co-founding and serving as Artistic Director of the annual Pharos Arts Foundation International Contemporary Music Festival, now in its seventh year. In this talk, Evis Sammoutis will present his recent music for vocal, orchestral and chamber ensembles, discussing his technical lexicon, aesthetic standpoint, key influences and issues of identity. The challenges and rewards of composing in a peripheral Mediterranean island will be illuminated with references to Sammoutis’ triple role as composer, teacher and artistic director.

We are absolutely delighted to be able to welcome them to Hull as part of a brief UK tour.

He has been a writer-in-residence in California, France, Transylvania and Tasmania; twice a Hawthornden Writing Fellow; and winner of the Welsh Academi John Tripp Award. Previous collections include Vandemonian (Arc, 2013). His new book travels from Hull to Vietnam and back, by way of Israel, Transylvania, California and Cambodia. ‘The high energy of Cliff Forshaw's poems makes me think particularly of Donne and the other Metaphysicals: argument, wit, erudition and force of feeling all working to convey an authentic vision of the world we live in.’ Christopher Reid

Kath McKay has taught at the University of Hull since 2008. She has published a novel, short stories and two poetry collections. She has had two Arts Council awards for short stories, and won the Poetry Business Prize for her collection Anyone Left Standing. Her most recent poetry collection is Telling the Bees (Smiths Knoll, 2014). Her new collection, Collision Forces, has ‘a gimlet eye for detail’. STANDARDS QUARTET Friday 20 November, 1.15 pm Lindsey Suite, Staff House Cost: £6 / senior citizens £5 / other concessions £3 Enquiries: 01482 462045 or fassevents@hull.co.uk. Online ticket purchase is available from www. hullboxoffice.co.uk As a band, members of the New York Standards Quartet (NYSQ) have developed a neartelepathic relationship, playing together in a variety of settings since their formation in 2006. Conceptually, the NYSQ strives to 1 develop its own language within the tradition of performing a standard jazz repertoire.

the NYSQ is ‘a group devoted to radical reinvention of famous pop songs and Broadway show tunes. Plenty of contemporary jazz artists do that, but few more divertingly than this vivacious foursome, who delightedly cherish the originals while brusquely deconstructing their harmonies and tweaking their melodies, sometimes only Tim Armacost slippingDavid in the original theme on Berkman the way out of the piece. This Gene Jackson is a collective class act.’

This Hull Jazz Festival event brings together the National Youth Jazz Orchestra sextet, the City of Hull Youth Jazz Orchestra, the Jazz Æsthetic from the University of Hull directed by Dr Peter Elsdon, and local schools, for a concert showcasing student performers.

The best bands from the heats battle it out for a place in the Battle of the Bands final. Expect a wide range of musical styles throughout the evening.

Pianist James Kirby gives recitals throughout the UK, and has appeared as a soloist at Wigmore Hall and the Edinburgh and Aldeburgh festivals. He has been a member of the Barbican Piano Trio since 1992, teaches at the Royal Welsh College in Cardiff, Royal Holloway, University of London and is an Honorary Professor at the Rachmaninov Institute, Tambov, Russia where he makes annual visits to perform concertos, give recitals and masterclasses and lead chamber music courses.

This talk is part of a much bigger set of questions about high notes and gender and about the countertenor revival and its coincidence with a fashion in popular music for high lead voices (such as Frankie Valli, the Beach Boys, and so on). This, in turn, foreshadows a link between countertenor voices and sexual political agendas (for example Jimmy Somerville as a comparison with Britten’s Oberon in Midsummer Night’s Dream).

His recital for Hull will include a selection of works by Debussy, Tchaikovsky and Chopin. 2.30pm: Fourteenth Grace Black Piano Masterclass. Observers welcome.
