Mouthpiece of the Gods Friday 26 October 2012 Middleton Hall, Hull Campus, 13:15 A solo lecture recital by John Kenny, illustrating related instruments from all over the ancient world including didgeridoo, Polynesian conch horn, Bronze Age Irish horns, the carnyx, Tibetan trumpet, Alphorn, sackbuts and trombones. Lip reed instruments are often thought of primarily as instruments of war but they have also been used in sacred ritual – to communicate with the ‘otherworld’, to instil awe and reverence, and to represent the voice of the gods – a super voice. To illustrate his presentation, John Kenny presents music of many cultures and epochs, including Byzantine, Ambrosian and Gregorian Chant, items from the Inchcolm Antifer, Palestrina, Gabrielli, Schutz, Mozart, Beethoven, Berlioz, Mahler, Berio and Xenakis, as well as his own music. This is an exploration not only of the sounds and techniques of playing and writing for lip reed instruments from the earliest cultural echoes to the present day; it is also an attempt to trace common threads of inspiration in the use of those instruments from the dawn of time to the culture of the 20th century. www.carnyxscotland.co.uk 14:30 Masterclass/Workshop. Wednesday 14 November – Saturday 17 November 2012 The Donald Roy Theatre, The Gulbenkian Centre, 19:30 Two Let us take a trip down to the local pub 1980s style; we are greeted by a place full of relationships gone sour, failed aspirations and unfulfilled lives. We see ill-fated couples, single people clinging onto the hope of finding happiness with another as well as customers complaining about their other halves. At the heart of the play are the Landlord and Landlady whose story holds a secret threatening to tear them apart. Two allows us to peek into their lives, and their complicated situation which mirrors the experience of the working class in Thatcher’s Britain. There is more here than first meets the eye. Escurial Set in the palace which gives the play its name, Escurial is a dance of death played out by a decadent king and his fool while, elsewhere in the palace, the queen lies dying. Packed into the play’s short length is all of de Ghelderode’s preoccupation with the ‘understains’ of human nature, revealed with disturbing and searing intensity.

English Touring Opera presents: On Some Threshold of the Air – Songs of Viktor Ullmann Monday 19 November 2012 Middleton Hall, Hull Campus, 20:00 Paula Sides (soprano) Jonathan Gale (piano) This season English Touring Opera’s national tour presents an exciting new production of Viktor Ullmann’s brilliant work, The Emperor of Atlantis, which was composed and rehearsed at Terezín concentration camp in 1944 before the composer was sent to his death at Auschwitz. As part of a wider exploration of music from this time, Paula Sides (soprano) and Jonathan Gale (piano) celebrate the life and lesser-known works of this extraordinary composer. This recital is a study of Ullmann’s life and work, as reflected in a selection of the many songs he wrote throughout his tragically short career. Originally from Tennessee, Paula Sides studied opera at the Royal College of Music, where she received the Tagore Gold Medal. Jonathan Gale studied music at Cambridge University before studying as a conductor at the St Petersburg Conservatoire and as a repetiteur at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Together they have been finalists in the Young Concert Artists Trust competition at the Wigmore Hall. The performance will be followed by a panel discussion about Ullmann, the historical context of his works and the art of Terezín. www.englishtouringopera.org.uk Tickets: £10 / senior citizens £7 / students £3 Enquiries: 01482 465998 or music@hull.ac.uk

Whale Music Thursday 13 – Saturday 15 December 2012 Hull Truck Theatre (Studio), 20:00 ‘Just because it’s always been that way, doesn’t make it wrong’. Caroline is pregnant. And she has a choice. More than one choice. Caroline returns to her hometown, to both face and escape from her dilemma. There she is surrounded by a group of very different women, with very different ideas about what she should do. They struggle with their own views and Caroline’s decisions. They laugh, they love and they live. An emotionally rich drama about roots, motherhood and relationships. Oscar award-winner Anthony Minghella wrote this play in 1981 for the female drama students of the University of Hull. Now performed by the current crop of drama students, this is a special collaboration between Hull Truck Theatre and the University of Hull, to celebrate Anthony Minghella’s impact on Hull’s theatrical life. University Orchestra – Polish Perspective

Szpilman’s style encompasses both the ‘popular’ and the ‘serious’. His indisputably varied, exuberant and sumptuous music has such an appeal that he has sometimes been described as a ‘Polish Gershwin’. In this programme, his music is performed alongside an early Wagner work written to commemorate the 19th-century Polish uprising against the Russians, as well as a forgotten opera fragment about Napoleon’s mistress. 14:30 Introduction to Conducting workshop with live orchestra. An opportunity for members of the audience to conduct the orchestra. Observers welcome. Tickets £5 / senior citizens £4 / other concessions £3 Enquiries: 01482 462045 or tickets@hull.ac.uk
