2015 VANCOUVER GOLF & TRAVEL SHOW

by Alfie Lau

Hosting Vancouver’s annual golf show isn’t about reinventing the wheel, but that doesn’t mean show producer John Tipping isn’t trying to make the show better every year.

Scheduled for Feb. 14 and 15 at the PNE Forum, the Golf Show features many local exhibitors, along with an impressive group of other Canadian and North American exhibitors. “We want the 2015 Vancouver Golf & Travel Show to be bigger, better and louder, said Tipping, who has been producing the show since 2011 and also organizes the Seattle Golf Show which goes two weeks after the Vancouver show. “We’re always looking to add more value for each ticket buyer. For example, all kids 17 and under get in free and

everybody else only pays $12. For that $12, attendees will be able to pick up many two-for-one or reduced golf and driving range discounts that will more than cover that initial entry fee as well as some great bargains in the PGA of BC and Peak Golf Retail Centers. Tipping is particularly excited to have more local courses, including Morgan Creek from Surrey, with a booth at the two-day show. “We’ll have more than 100 exhibitors, travel destinations, manufacturers and golf companies at the show, said Tipping. That may fulfill the “bigger part of the equation, but it’s not hard to see where the “better and “louder part of the equation comes from. The Fireside Chats will see local radio personality Jeff Paterson of TSN1040 hosting a revolving roundtable of local golf personalities. Scheduled guests for The Fireside Chats include local professional Bryn Parry; Vancouver Golf Tour Commissioner Fraser Mulholland; Big Break finalist and

THE VANCOUVER GOLF SHOW S NEW CHARITY PARTNER For 2015, The Vancouver Golf & Travel Show has partnered with Boys & Girls Clubs of South Coast BC. For over 75 years, BGC has been giving children and youth something they deserve; a place to belong when they aren’t at home or at school. The Boys & Girls Clubs of South Coast BC will be selling tickets for this year’s Vancouver Golf & Travel Show with proceeds going toward their clubs. 10 VANCOUVER GOLF SHOW OFFICIAL PROGRAM

2015 VANCOUVER GOLF & TRAVEL SHOW By Alfie Lau

It’s going to be a big year for British Columbia Golf in 2015. Not only is the organization putting together a fabulous set of provincial championships, it also stands to be the beneficiary of three massive events also being held in the region. It’s understandable to see how the US Open, being contested at Chambers Bay, a four-hour drive from Vancouver, and the Canadian Women’s Open, being held for the second time in four years at the Vancouver Golf Club, will drive more people to the sport of golf, but it’s the FIFA Women’s World Cup that has British Columbia Golf leaders very excited. “Having the best female soccer players here is something we can leverage, said British Columbia Golf President David Atkinson. “The common theme of women excelling in sports, that it’s OK to be a great female athlete, that’s something we can build upon.

Jonasson said many young female golfers play multiple sports, often balancing team sports like soccer and basketball with their individual golf games. Not only will these young women be able to see their soccer heroes up close and personal in June and July, they’ll be able to see their golf heroes at the Vancouver Golf Club in August.

“Having virtually the top 100 female golfers here is a huge opportunity on many levels for the Province of British Columbia,â€? said Jonasson. “From a business point of view, these top 100 represent 35 separate countries and 32 of those countries have a consulate or trade office in British Columbia.â€? Perhaps that’s  what makes Â? 2015 such an - British Columbia Executive Director, important year Kris Jonasson for British Columbia Golf, British Columbia Golf Executive Director the governing body of amateur golf in Kris Jonasson could not agree more: the province as it represents more than “Any time you have high-performance 56,000 members at more than 300 women’s sports is an opportunity to clubs across the province. It’s all about build up women’s participation in all increasing participation in the sport and sports.â€? membership and sponsorship in the 16

association so that the sport can continue to grow and thrive. Atkinson said he is encouraged by the number of young golfers who are being introduced to the sport. “I’m a firm believer in our programs, Playground to Fairway, which helps school-aged children build the foundation for learning the fundamentals of golf

and increases their physical literacy, and SNAG (Starting New At Golf), another hugely successful school-based initiative. “I was just blown away when I went to a session and saw the equipment they were going to use and how they used it in a school environment, said Atkinson. “Some of the things that I saw them using this SNAG equipment for, I wanted to take back to my 60-year old golf buddies and say, ‘Here, use this and this will teach you this particular technique.’ Atkinson is also proud of SOAR (Sharing Our Activities and Resources), which is a program the organization uses in remote areas where they partner with other sport organizations to cross-train individuals on several sports in the same visit. LOWER MAINLAND NEWS

It’s a typical West Coast autumn day, with grey skies and intermittent showers, but that doesn’t dampen the enthusiasm of David O’Connor. As Burnaby’s manager of golf operations, O’Connor has weathered his share of storms and one day of bad weather never fazes him. “Are there going to be ups and downs in this business? Of course, said O’Connor. “But we’re just looking for consistency in this market. And by consistency, O’Connor means looking at the golf market as a whole and not just looking at short-term goals. “In the last 10 years, we’ve shown

slight growth and the last three years have been particularly exciting for us, said O’Connor, pointing to the shiny new clubhouse at Riverway that opened in 2011 and is fast becoming the crown jewel of the Burnaby Golf empire. Because of all the options Burnaby can offer, even on this rainy day, you 18

can see a busy restaurant in the clubhouse, handfuls of golfers hitting balls in the two-tier driving range and even some brave golfers headed out to play 18 holes. Not so visible, but equally as important to the golf department’s growth are the miles and miles of slit drainage that was put in at Riverway... also in the last three years. “You see that big puddle by the first tee when we arrived? It’s all drained within 15 minutes said Hal Eremko, Riverway’s Head Professional. “With the great drainage, not only can we get more rounds in, we can also get a lot more work done in times you don’t expect work to be done. In the last year, that’s meant all of Riverway’s bunkers have been reworked, and with much of that work done in off-peak times, it has been much less of an inconvenience to the golfing public.

O’Connor, Eremko and Burnaby Mountain Head Professional Don Mark aim to provide the best value golf experience by being deadly honest about their operations. For example, Burnaby Mountain’s demographics show that many seniors and women play the course and while the course isn’t long by PGA Tour standards, it certainly is from the red tees. “It’s one of the longest courses for ladies in the area so if we can add more tees to turn it from 5,600 to 5,000 yards, we will add more versatility to that course, said O’Connor. And while Riverway can play to more than 7,000 yards from the championship tees, O’Connor admits that an everyday golfer playing from those tees on a regular basis wouldn’t have a fun experience. “When you have more tee boxes that offer a different look to a hole, you get a different course that is interesting to the everyday golfer, said O’Connor. “Look, we’re in the entertainment dollars industry. We’re competing with the Canucks, the movie theatres,

anything in a person’s entertainment budget. If we can give our existing customers great experiences so that they play two or three more rounds a year, that’s another 1,000 rounds for our bottom line. That’s a reachable goal and that’s part of why we have steady growth... Our business plan has us looking 10 years ahead at all times. Too many courses get too reactive to the cash register As for the future, O’Connor said plans are still going ahead to look at converting the Kensington Par 3 Pitchand-Putt into a 9-hole executive course. “We started looking at Riverway’s clubhouse a decade before it opened and I’d say we’re past the halfway mark on (Kensington’s conversion). O’Connor also believes sunny days are ahead. “We know who we are and what our brand is. During the dips and valleys, we stick to our guns. We have something for every price range and the quality will be there at every level. If you have time after work and want to work on your game, go to Central Park for the pitch-and-putt or go to Riverway or Burnaby Mountain and hit some balls at our fully renovated driving ranges. If you want to play a course that won’t beat you up too much, Burnaby Mountain is an affordable option. And if you want a weekend treat, well, Riverway is still very affordable. And as if on cue, a sliver of sun peaks out on the otherwise cloudy day and it’s business as usual for the Burnaby Golf team. more than 1,500 player biographies, and the tournament records from all events with a history of greater than 25 years. One of the proudest moments for Riste came in May 1989, when PGA Tour star and BC resident, Dave Barr, used a ‘track iron’ from the late-1700s and a feathery ball to officially tee off and open the BC Golf House. In 2001 the Golf Hall of Fame of BC was created to honour golfers whose competitive achievements brought pride and recognition to themselves and to British Columbia. Every odd numbered year there is a Hall ofFame Induction and to date there are 34 Honoured Members and 1 team in the Hall of Fame. Since it’s an oddnumbered year this year, the Hall of FROM TOP LEFT: THE GOLF HOUSE Fame will be BEFORE RENOVATION THROUGH TO expanding, so stay AS IT LOOKS TODAY tuned for an announcement later this year. What has Riste a little antsy these days is that the current lease for the facility runs out on May 22 and while he’s confident his landlord, David Ho, is working with the Musqueam Nation to extend that lease, he would like the certainty of a signed lease. “I’m involved in commercial property rentals and I always like having signed contracts well in advance of the lease expiring, said Riste. “I’ve been working with Michael Mather (Executive Professional at the University Golf Club) and I’ve been working on the assumption that we will continue to be here, but it would be nice to have a signed (renewal). We have a great facility here and we want to continue to be here. Even with that uncertainty, it’s still full steam ahead for Riste and his team as they prepare for the two biggest events on their calendar. “Our annual general meeting is on Thursday, March 19 at 30

And on Monday, May 11, the 28th annual Tradition Golf Classic will be held at the University Golf Course. “This is our major fundraiser each year, said Riste. “We are also very fortunate that Mr. Ho has donated the course so that all proceeds from this event will be directed to the BC Golf House Society. We are also thankful for the generous support of Michael Mather and his team. Since 1987, the Tradition Golf Classic has raised more than $600,000, with all proceeds going back into the museum. Early bird entries (fully paid by April 1) are only $200, with regular entry fees of $225. This year’s plans include excavating the remaining 1,200 square foot basement to create new display space, new bathrooms and a new kitchen area. The displays will be upgraded focusing on golf after 1950, utilizing the museum’s vast collection of artifacts from 1950 - 2000. “Come and visit us at 2545 Blanca Street, said Riste. “I’m there most days and we have a student there when I’m not there. Amateur, scheduled for July 12-17 at Fairview Mountain Golf Course in Oliver. The Bostock Trophy has been awarded since 1894 and last year’s winner, Jordan Lu, prevailed in a thrilling five-hole playoff over Michael Belle. “Fairview Mountain is a wonderful and fair golf course, said Jonasson. “We are very happy to be having the Men’s Amateur there. Jonasson said it’s a nice change for the organization to have the majority of its championships outside the Lower Mainland this year, with the bulk of the tournaments on Vancouver Island and the Interior. While Cowichan, Duncan Meadows and Cordova Bay are being utilized on the Island, Interior courses Talking Rock, Osoyoos, Spallumcheen and Two Eagles (in addition to Fairview Mountain), will be sites for British Columbia Golf Championships this year. Swan-e-Set, for the Men’s Senior’s Championship at the end of July, will host the only Lower Mainland based championship. British Columbia Golf also administers the Rules of Golf, Handicapping and Course Rating and its Public Player’s Club is a popular way for golfers to maintain their handicap. British Columbia Golf has had a hand in helping launch the careers of professionals such as Nick Taylor, Adam Hadwin, Roger Sloan and Eugene Wong, but it’s continually working with the next crew of emerging star golfers. Jonasson is particularly proud of the three young BC women who were recently named to Golf Canada’s development squad: Michelle Kim, Naomi Ko and Alisha Lau. He said he’s been getting regular updates from national coach Ann Carroll about these three and in particular, Ko has been showing very good form, playing in Australia and winning two of four matches against much older opponents. Back to the organizational side, Atkinson, now almost midway through his second year as President, said there was a learning curve in Year 1 as the organization moved from a 26-board member operating model to a nine-board member governance model. “There was a transition, but I think we have done a good job of recruiting board members who contribute different skill sets to our board, said Atkinson. “We’re a board that is working well together.
