f e i h C Scribe Spotlight

November 2013

Lindsey Bierle

Lindsey is the Chief Scribe at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Below, she shares her favorite memories, along with some advice to other scribes.

How did you get started scribing? I participated in a summer internship at Baptist Memorial (Memphis), and one of our rotations was through the ER. I spent nine hours shadowing a scribe working with one of our physicians, and she explained to me her role in creating a more efficient, productive workplace for the physicians. I was in awe at her extensive medical terminology knowledge, familiarity with common drugs prescribed in the ER, and her ability to keep up with the physician and take ownership of all of the documentation for each patient. At that point, I was already considering a gap year or two before medical school, and I knew that scribing was what I wanted to spend my time doing.

What do you enjoy most about being a Chief Scribe? I have greatly enjoyed making personal connections with each physician at Baptist and investing in each member of the Baptist scribe team. I take pride in the Baptist team and the ways in which we are constantly growing and improving to better serve the physicians in our group. The hospital had just hired a new ER Medical Director, Dr. Lang, when I first became Chief, so it has been an incredible experience for me to work alongside Dr. Lang and learn about

healthcare management and administration from him. I have also had the opportunity to interact daily with many of the key PhysAssist players in Texas who allow us to thrive as a team in Memphis; my CSMs Taylor and Mark have given me the tools to succeed as a leader, and their continued encouragement and advice has made my experience as Chief more enjoyable than I could have imagined. I also receive an incredible amount of support from Emily Espe in the training

department, Kim Starkey, Baptist’s beloved time card analyst, and Amber Posel, our scheduler who works around the clock to ensure that we have the best schedule possible. Sorry to ramble! I guess what I enjoy most is making all of these great connections with amazing individuals who all have the same goal of creating the best scribe team possible.

Any advice for Chiefs or scribes in general? When I became Chief, I decided to keep the phrase “Leave it better than you found it” in mind at all times. With that, I have striven to improve current processes and really invest in each team member to make sure they know how important they are to the team and to me. As Chief, it is important to me to always be available to my team so they know they have someone supporting them at all stages of their progress as a scribe, from trainee to solo to veteran scribe status. For newer scribes, I would say perseverance and a positive outlook are key to improving and not getting overwhelmed. Scribing is not the easiest job in the world, but a little perseverance, hard work, and a good attitude seem to go a long way in this fast-paced environment.

Do you have a favorite memory from your time at PhysAssist? I don’t know that I have a favorite memory (there are too many different experiences to pull from!), but the most recent memory that comes to mind was the Chief Scribe Leadership Conference. To be able to collaborate with chiefs from all over the country and brainstorm ways to improve our teams was such a cool experience. I really benefited from all of the departmental

With my team (Mem phis Baptist) at th e Memphis Redbirds AA A baseball game! speakers, from HR to the training department, and I returned home with a newfound sense of purpose and drive in my role as Chief. The conference was a game changer for me in the sense that I better understood how I could serve my team, our physicians, and PhysAssist to create and sustain a strong scribe team at one of the busiest hospitals in Memphis.

What do you plan to do after scribing? I plan on staying with PhysAssist for a few more months to train the new Chief and help with the upcoming transition to electronic health records in the ER. After I leave PhysAssist, I will continue to work as a supervisor at Camp Aldersgate, a medical camp for children with mental and physical disabilities. I will also continue teaching piano lessons to children in the South Memphis area. I am currently applying to medical school and hope to someday revisit the PhysAssist Company in a different facet.

Meet the Team Each quarter, we’ll feature a different department of the corporate office. This month..

Schedulers & Time Card Analysts

Lindsey Lyons - Scheduler I am a mother of one and enjoy going to the park as a family and reading to my toddler. I am currently in college finishing my degree. I have recently accepted a promotion in the Finance department and look forward to another successful implementation! My favorite thing about working at PhysAssist is attending Tuesday morning meetings at the corporate office. I appreciate the ability to mingle with all departments and the insight Alex (our president) provides is invaluable to me as a part of the team and on an individual, personal level.

Missy Henderson - Scheduler

I am married and have two awesome boys, 10 and 13. I enjoy time with my family, baking and reading. Both of my boys play baseball. We all enjoy baseball and spend a lot of time together at baseball games (theirs and the Rangers)!

Bunny Hymer - Time Card Analyst I’ve been married to my husband for 22 years. We have three children: Matt (20), Sarah (17), and Abby (14). When not reviewing time cards, I enjoy gardening, watching my daughters dance, and hanging out with my family in the backyard for cookouts, pool time, and relaxing!

Leslie Young - Scheduler I currently schedule the teams in Tacoma, WA, Centralia, WA and Fort Worth, TX. The best part of my job is getting to know the scribes, even though there may be many, many states that separate us.

I enjoy going to Texas Rangers baseball games with my husband and two boys and vacations at the beach. I lived in Maryland for two years and got to see many states in the Northeast, so I hope to someday take a trip to the Pacific Northwest!

Senita Kazic - Time Card Analyst

I’m Senita and I’m an accounting student at the University of Texas at Arlington and a time card analyst for PhysAssist Scribes. In my free time I enjoy playing volleyball and soccer and I spend most of my time relaxing with friends.

Fontaine Shannon - Scheduler I’ve been scheduling at PhysAssist for just over two years now. I was born and raised in Ft Worth, but left for 5 years to live in Southern California where I met my husband, then came back to FW as quickly as I could! We have two boys, Wilson(6th grade) and Eliot (3rd grade).

Any spare time I have is spent volunteering at my sons’ school. I really enjoy working at PhysAssist, and am excited to be working for a company that is growing so quickly!

Sandra Donaldson - Time Card Analyst

My name is Sandra Donaldson and I have been with PhysAssist for almost 1 year. I began as a scheduler/time card analyst and I am now solely a time card analyst. I am married with five children. I enjoy sewing, crafting and watching my kids play sports.
