Our Chair I have come to fully appreciate during my tenure as Chair that IAAE Canada is very fortunate to have the support of a dedicated and growing membership of airport professionals, corporate members and stakeholders from all regions of the country. Your membership and commitment enabled IAAE Canada to record yet another year of growth and development on our continued journey to becoming the premier organization for the professional development of Canadian airports personnel. Our leading achievement for 2011 was the release to market of IAAE Canada’s first online training modules. These modules, seven of which are currently available through the web site, will be expanded over time to become a library of introductory training for the airport industry. We see a need for broad-based industry knowledge not only in the present but even more so in the years to come as the Boomers, with their accumulated knowledge and skills, leave the industry to be replaced by new talent who may not necessarily have a specific or detailed grounding in aviation. As part of our 2012 program, we intend to introduce additional modules on equipment operations, airside and terminal operations and general airport management. Charlottetown was an exceptional host for the 2011 Facility, Operations & Airport Managers Conference. Once again, we exceeded the previous year’s high in attendance and program variety. Attendees told us it was the excellent subject matter and quality speakers that attracted them the most, in addition to the scenic venue. We are hoping for an equal or better level of success in Victoria in 2012. In conjunction with our colleagues in AAAE and IAAE, we are also organizing an international conference in Montreal from August 19-22 on the evolution of the airport and air carrier industries. Coupled with the conference will be a session of the highly acclaimed M.I.T. Airport Systems Planning Course. All three of these events represent valuable opportunities for professional learning and industry networking and we would highly recommend that you consider attending. Because of your valued support, our membership numbers passed through the 300 mark in 2011 - an all time high - and continue to grow. We undertook a member’s satisfaction survey to determine how we can improve and received highly useful feedback from the membership. In addition, we launched the Voice of the Member program as another vehicle for keeping a pulse on the needs of the members. We have already acted on some of the results by exploring new initiatives such as member webinars and have factored others into our 2012 plans, about which you will learn more in these pages. We can all be certain that our industry will continue to face change and challenges, be it new regulations, changes in the business environment or new skill requirements. IAAE Canada is committed to helping you meet these challenges by continuing to responsibly invest members’ equity in new classroom and online training, certification and accreditation programs, conferences and other networking opportunities and innovative methods for professional development. You can preview our full complement of member services on our website iaaecanada.org, which we would encourage you to peruse on a regular basis. Our focus remains locked on delivering value to our members. As I have noted in other instances, IAAE Canada has attained its present level of success in large part because of the efforts of those members who have volunteered their time and passion to serve on the Board of Directors and the various Standing Committees. During 2011, Steve Burchi, A.A.E. and Steve Maybury, A.A.E. both retired from the Board and were succeeded by Chris Wood, A.A.E. and Mike Seabrook, A.A.E. I would like to thank Steve and Steve for their committed service to the Association and at the same time welcome Chris and Mike as our new Board members. We also welcomed back Eric Tolton, A.A.E. to the Board as the upcoming Corporate Representative. The future vitality of our Association is dependent upon members continuing to volunteer for Board and Committee positions. We would urge you to consider doing so for the benefit of IAAE Canada and for your personal development, as well. On a personal note, I will be concluding my three-year term as the Chair of IAAE Canada at the 2012 Annual General Meeting in Victoria. It has been my personal and professional honour to have had the opportunity to serve as Chair. My gratitude goes out to all of you for your support and camaraderie and to the Greater Toronto Airports Authority for encouraging and enabling my involvement. We have the envious advantage of working in a dynamic, exciting industry filled with all sorts of exceptional people. Cuyler Green, A.A.E. will be your new Chair and will be bringing fresh leadership and new ideas to the role. I know that you will give the same great support and encouragement to Cuyler as given to me. Thank you for helping to make 2011 another successful year for IAAE Canada! Bill Newman, A.A.E. , Chair, IAAE Canada 1

Year in Review Over the course of the past year, IAAE Canada continued to develop and introduce new products and services for its membership and to realize further successes in its ongoing programs and activities. New initiatives to deliver added value to our members… • Online training courses: A total of 7 online training courses were launched on a range of airport-related topics, offering a cost effective alternative for meeting our members’ training needs. • Member webinars: Work was initiated on the design of webinars exclusively for IAAE Canada members on topical airport issues delivered by subject matter experts. Plans call for the launch of the first webinar in the early part of 2012. • School of Airport Management: Action was initiated to apply to governmental authorities for the designation of IAAE Canada as a private career college which will provide added opportunities for the delivery of training and professional development programs. • Voice of the Member: To ensure that we are both anticipating and responding to member needs, a set of feedback mechanisms was developed to regularly measure member satisfaction, systematically assess reactions to training courses, conferences and other events and gauge member preferences for new products and services. • Social Media: We heightened our presence on Facebook and Linked-in as an added means of communicating with current and potential members. • Marketing Committee: A new Marketing Committee was established under the leadership of Mike Seabrook, A.A.E. to bring a sharper focus to the marketing of IAAE Canada’s portfolio of training and professional development products and propose new products and services to meet member needs. • Canada/U.S./Europe Conference: Planning work was undertaken to hold an international conference, co-sponsored by IAAE Canada, AAAE and IAAE, on the evolution of the airport and air carrier industries in Montreal in August 2012. Ongoing programs and activities to serve our members… • Membership: A total of 29 net new members joined IAAE Canada increasing overall membership to a new high of 312 by year’s end and exceeding our annual target of 25 net new members. • Training courses: 22 of the 25 scheduled training courses were completed through which a total of 325 airport personnel across the country were provided with training in various aspects of airport operations and management. • Online training: Subscriptions to IAAE Canada’s initial offering of online training courses continued to build gradually over the course of the year. • Accreditation Academy; An Accreditation Academy was held in Toronto in June from which 21 members achieved Certified Member status, surpassing our target of 12 for the year.

new Members to the Board of directors in 2011

Chris landed at the Region of Waterloo International Airport over two years ago in September of 2009 as the Airport’s General Manager. Previously employed by the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) at Toronto Pearson Airport, Chris held increasingly responsible positions in Operations, Strategic Planning, Facility Activation and Consulting Services. Chris spent time working at various airports in Canada, abroad at airports in Dubai, London England, and in New York City. Chris’s love of aviation began at the Airport he now manages where he spent a summer working as a ramp attendant, cleaning smashed bugs on windshields and making sure the Cessna fleet all had the required amount of gas. He also learned to fly that summer as well. A 1997 graduate of the Aviation Management program at Georgian College, Chris went on to obtain his Bachelor of Science degree in Aviation Management from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. In 2007, Chris was selected from a group of 40,000 alumni and awarded the Georgian College Board of Governors’ “Distinguished Alumni Award.” Chris is an Accredited Airport Executive, holds a private pilot’s license and is an active member of Georgian College’s Aviation Management Advisory Committee, as well as the Board of Directors of the International Association of Airport Executives Canada. Chris lives in Ayr, Ontario with his wife Kathy and 2 children Matthew (5) and Sarah (3).

Mike Seabrook A.A.E. brings twenty one years of air transportation experience and a combination of senior management, business development, operations, customer service and airport expertise to IAAE Canada. Mr. Seabrook was born and raised in London, has strong academic fundamentals including an Honours BA from University of Western Ontario and MBA from the Ivey School of Management and is currently President and CEO of the London International Airport. Mike is a licensed pilot and the proud owner of a home built RV 8 aircraft and still resides in London with his wife and three children.

I wish I could have used last year’s report and just changed the dates but alas, the pace seems to pick up here at headquarters and Michelle and I are always reassessing our priorities due to the Board’s constant efforts to take IAAE Canada higher. Please don’t think I’m complaining, it’s just that, as promised we launched our On-line training, although we expected to have more done by then we started with five courses and we have added another two. It is going slower than planned but then we are relying heavily on volunteers. Taking that into account, we are very grateful for having this many available. This has been a big step for us and the Board has some even bigger plans regarding training for the next few years, so stay tuned…perhaps to our E-Report that goes out each week to more than 1500 subscribers. Over the year we saw more retirements and a lot more new members which while increasing the work load also makes us very happy. Our classroom training continues to be in demand, for instance in 2011 we trained 325 people in 22 courses. While writing this we are (early 2012) we are introducing new courses… More work. (love it) Not to mention webinars, oh sorry I said not to mention webinars and I did. Yes we are organising webinars with some industry professionals to give our members some added service for their membership dollar. It’s not all work though, they let us go home once in a while, or off to a conference at one of the provincial associations, and especially our own Facility, Operations & Airport Managers (FOAM) conference This year, 2012, will be in Victoria, but we all still remember Charlottetown from last year, the lobster dinner, the great speakers, and amazing trade show, the lobster dinner, some exciting weather, great golf course and oh yes, the lobster. Our AGM was once again held at FOAM and Chris Wood AAE and Mike Seabrooke AAE replaced Steve Burchi AAE and Steve Maybury AAE who completed their respective terms. We invite all to join in on our AGM’s, we work hard not to make them stuffy and boring while still completing all the statutory requirements. Throughout this, the 2011 Annual Report, you will find references to the things I have mentioned here and in more detail, so let me leave you to enjoy reading this edition and especially because, in house we are calling it our family album, enjoy the pictures. iAAe Canada Chapters

IAAE Canada encourages the formation of local chapters in those locations where there is a critical mass of members to support one. Local chapters serve to strengthen the relationships amongst members, promote networking and information sharing and provide an avenue for professional development and mentoring. To date, IAAE Canada chapters have been established at Toronto Pearson International Airport, Georgian College in Barrie, Ontario and at the University of Western Ontario located in London, Ontario.

Toronto Pearson The members of the Toronto Pearson chapter meet on a bimonthly basis. Typically, the meetings consist of a discussion of the latest Association news from across the country followed by a review of trends and occurrences affecting the aviation industry as a whole. Members are brought up to date on air carrier activities and strategies, airport developments and trends in the larger business environment. Each meeting members are also treated to a feature presentation or a site visit delivered by a fellow member or an invited guest. Presentation topics have ranged from leadership, energy management, and stormwater management to air cargo and eco-business parks, all with the purpose of expanding members’ knowledge and range of thinking about the industry in an atmosphere of collegial discussion and knowledge sharing.

9

iAAe CAnAdA

Georgian College The Georgian College Chapter, which came into existence in early 2008, is comprised of students enrolled in the Aviation Management program and is an extension of the Canadian Aviation Students Organization (CASO). Wil MacMillan, A.A.E. a graduate of the Georgian program advised the students on the formation of the new chapter and continues to serve as the mentor & liaison with IAAE Canada. This chapter held meetings throughout the year that included presentations by industry speakers that provided the student membership insight into the many potential employment streams and more importantly gave them the opportunity to network with airport professionals. Student members also attended some of the Toronto Pearson Chapter meetings thus broadening their opportunities to learn and network with Airport Professionals. As well, an airside tour of Toronto Pearson International Airport was organized for the students. IAAE Canada welcomed the appointment of Philip Van Manen C.M.as a professor in the Aviation Management Program. In addtion to his academic responsibilities, Philip is serving as the Faculty Advisor for the Student Chapter.

The University of Western Ontario The student chapter at the University of Western Ontario (UWO) was again well supported by its chapter members in 2011. The Commercial Aviation Management (CAM) Council continues to develop, support and promote the benefits of the IAAE Canada Student Chapter to its membership which has resulted in overall growth of student members at UWO. Led by Council Presidents Grant Thorner at the beginning of the year and Robin Jacuzzi in the fall, IAAE Canada would like to thank the CAM Council for its ongoing efforts to grow the Student Chapter in London. IAAE Canada would also like to recognize fourth year CAM Council Representative Johnathan Sawicki for his support and dedication to growing the Student Chapter.

A.A.E. The Mark of an Airport Professional

The “Accredited Airport Executive”(A.A.E.) is an internationally recognized designation and a comprehensive professional development program designed to cover all aspects of airport management. It consists of three phases: • A Written Exam • A Research Paper • An Interview IAAE Canada offers its premier and industry recognized Accreditation Academy annually. The Academy is open to Affiliate and Associate Members of IAAE Canada. The objective of the Academy is to provide a comprehensive overview of the IAAE Canada body of knowledge to prepare the candidates to write the Certified Member exam. Upon completion of the Accreditation Academy and a successful passing grade of the onsite Certified Member exam, the member will be recognized as a Certified Member and may use the professional designation of C.M. after their name. Independent study and online Certified Member testing are also available. A mentor is provided to assist with the next two phases in achieving A.A.E. designation. A Management Paper is written and submitted for approval. Three examiners must agree the paper meets the measures of professionalism and format as listed in the IAAE Canada Management Paper Guidebook. The interview is the final step toward acheiving an A.A.E. designation. The format and process of the interview, along with the interview questions, are found in the IAAE Canada Interview Panel Members Guide (available only to Board of Examiner Members). Guidelines for the candidates are in the IAAE Canada Candidates Guide to the Final Interview. Upon completion of the program, the member will be recognized as an Accredited Airport Executive and may use the designation A.A.E. after their name.

Our Strategy IAAE Canada’s initial Strategic Plan covered the five year timeframe from 2007 through 2011. With the vision of becoming Canada’s premier organization for the professional development of airport management, the Plan focused on the development and marketing of programs and services, the growth of membership and the provision of organizational resources to drive further development and growth. Five year’s hence, IAAE Canada has substantially achieved the Plan’s original objectives. Meeting in October of 2011, the Board of Directors cast its attention ahead to the coming five year timeframe and a revitalized strategy for IAAE Canada. The Board recognized that the pace of change in the business environment continues unabated. Airports are becoming increasingly competitive and pressured to both increase revenues and decrease costs, while maintaining service levels. The onset of the Boomer exodus from the industry, combined with the requirement for new skill sets to operate airports as businesses, has created a need not only for talent recruitment but also for training and professional development. While Transport Canada has retrenched to the role of regulator and overseer, it nevertheless has been looking to the industry to take the leadership in designing and delivering training to airport and aviation personnel. But IAAE Canada is not alone in this regard as other industry organizations are moving to address training and professional development needs, meaning that IAAE Canada must actively compete by delivering products and services which are of value and relevance to the needs of the industry. Viewing these changes in the business environment as context, a strategic direction has been mapped out for the 2012 to 2016 timeframe. The strategy is framed around the following principal elements: • IAAE Canada will continue to base its business model on individual membership and to focus its attention on the needs of the individual member; • The Association’s core business will remain training and professional development for airport personnel; • By setting the standard for quality and value and building relationships, IAAE Canada will be recognized at all levels as the premier provider of airport training and professional development services to the Canadian industry; • New course and professional development offerings employing innovative technology and learning approaches will be brought to market to meet the evolving needs of airports generally and members in particular; • The organization’s capacity to deliver and sustainability for the long term will be reinforced through the further enhancement of administrative and program development capabilities and the deepening of Board skills and diversity. IAAE Canada will continue to progress towards its vision of being the country’s most widely known and regarded organization for the training and professional development of those involved in the airport business. The strategy will be realized through the execution of annual business plans addressing the priorities noted above.

Our 2012 Business Plan Despite persistent weaknesses in the European and U.S. economies and moves by the federal and provincial levels of government to reign in deficits through expenditure reductions, the Canadian economy is expected to experience continued growth in 2012, albeit at a more modest rate. Similarly, activity levels at Canadian airports are forecasted to increase but still at rates lower than those recorded prior to the recent recession. Anticipating that renewed growth will drive training and professional development needs, IAAE Canada has formulated a business plan premised on a full program of activities for 2012 for the benefit of members and the industry at large. IAAE Canada plans to achieve the following over the course of the year: • Deliver a minimum of 14 classroom training courses in various locations across the country, including new courses such as airport navigation aids; • Introduce new online training courses on topics of importance to members, e.g., equipment operations, and aggressively market its portfolio of online offerings; • Launch member only webinars as a new value-added feature for IAAE Canada members with the initial one focusing on deicing operations; • Sponsor, once again, a session of the prestigious Airport Systems Planning, Design & Management Course, a premium professional development opportunity for members and others • Conduct an accreditation academy with the aim of graduating a minimum of 12 new Certified Members; • Progress a minimum of 4 candidates to the completion of their Accredited Airport Executive designations; • Organize and successfully complete two major conferences: the Facility, Operations & Airport Managers Conference in Victoria in June and the IAAE Canada/AAAE/IAAE international conference on “The Evolution of the Airport & Air Carrier Industry” in Montreal in August; • Provide the latest in industry news and developments to members through continued improvements to the weekly Airports e-Report, the semi-annual IAAE Canada Airports Magazine, member e-mailings and the social media (Linked-in and Facebook); • Pursue designation by governmental authorities as a private career college which will provide IAAE Canada with additional options for delivering its training and professional development services and added benefits to participants; • Promote the many benefits of IAAE Canada membership with the aim of further increasing Association membership by 30 individual members and 10 corporate members; By successfully executing on this business plan, we will be able to bring continued value and benefit to our members and to accumulate the requisite financial resources to reinvest in new and improved products and services.

Membership & Communications Committee Going into 2011, the Membership & Communications Committee established a set of goals focused not only on increasing IAAE Canada membership but also enhancing the value of membership to current members. This Committee’s efforts were directed to achieving a net year-over-year increase in membership by adding a minimum of 25 new members and limiting member attrition to 5% of 2010 membership. We are happy to report that we exceeded our new member goal by 40%, increasing our membership by 64 new members. A new and exciting initiative for 2011 was our Voice of the Member program. This new program ensures that member needs and preferences guide the design of new products and services such as training courses, conferences and professional development activities and the postimplementation assessment of same to determine if those needs and preferences have been met. Our first execution of this program was a Membership Satisfaction Survey sent to the membership in August 2011. The results indicated to us that over half of our members joined IAAE Canada to network with other industry members. With that in mind, we began to develop plans to meet that demand. We have geared our weekly e-Report to include more member specific announcements and have invited the membership to use the weekly e-Report to interact with others by submitting their own comments, quotes, notices and humour. We will continue to apply this program to all IAAE Canada activities and events with the aim of increasing our members’ satisfaction. We have also redesigned the theme of our Annual Report this year. Through pictorial display, we are celebrating the community spirit and activities of our member airports. The photos throughout this report have all been proudly submitted by our member airports, to illustrate their participation within their communities and exemplify their endeavour toward constant improvement of those relationships. The IAAE Canada Airport Magazine has released its 5th Edition in Spring 2011. A free publication, containing feature articles on a wide range of aviation-related topics, it is intended to complement the weekly e-Report and the web site and provide members with an added source of current industry information. Through the creative energies of Michelle Cretzman and Maxx Kochar, we raised our profile in the rapidly growing social media space. Greater use was made of Facebook and Linked-in to promote IAAE Canada events and publications and to offer an additional avenue for member networking. Tom Coupland personally promoted IAAE Canada membership through his participation in the annual conferences of several provincial aviation associations. Wil MacMillan, A.A.E. and Jeff Barrow, A.A.E. continued to work with student representatives at Georgian College and the University of Western Ontario respectively to build student membership and solidify the IAAE Canada student chapters at each school. Looking ahead to 2012, the Membership & Communications Committee intends to launch new initiatives to promote IAAE Canada membership and to enhance the membership experience by: • Growing IAAE Canada membership by 30 individual members and 10 corporate members; • Creating one new student chapter at a college or university; • Fully implementing the Voice of the Member; • Developing new member products and services, e.g., member only webinars; and • Continuing to expand IAAE Canada’s presence in the social media; The successes of 2011 and the plans for the coming year are due to the continuing creativity and energies of the following members who have generously offered their time and talents in the service of IAAE Canada: Jeff Barrow A.A.E. – Toronto Pearson Wil MacMillan A.A.E. – Toronto Pearson Iouri Moutine A.A.E. – Toronto Pearson Tim Nevins A.A.E. – Toronto Pearson

Scott MacNeil – Toronto Pearson Maxx Kochar C.M.– Toronto Pearson Paul Cudmore – Team Eagle Kelvin Williamson – LNT Solutions

Tom Coupland – Hamilton Michelle Cretzman – Hamilton

My personal appreciation is extended to each of these individuals for making 2011 a successful and rewarding year. Respectfully submitted, Bill Newman, A.A.E. Chair, Membership & Communications Committee. 2011 AnnuAl RePORt

Corporate Committee IAAE Canada provides a valuable forum for the sharing of information between corporate members and the airport industry across Canada. Through information provided by the IAAE Canada weekly newsletter, the semi-annual IAAE Canada magazine, special updates and an annual conference, corporate members have the ability to recognize and assist the airports’ requirements for equipment, services and management support. Corporate members are actively involved in providing training to airport staff through IAAE Canada sponsored courses .In 2011, a total of 22 training courses was provided by a variety of individuals and corporate organizations. The corporate members of IAAE Canada support the organization’s focus on training and development. The 2011 Facility, Operations & Airport Manager’s Conference (now known as "FOAM") held in Charlottetown in June 2011, provided an important opportunity for corporate members to mingle with airport operators under one venue. Sponsorship opportunities continue to be an economical and effective method of sharing their services and products. In addition, IAAE Canada recognizes the need to include industry as an active participant in the conference as presenters, and foster the interaction between corporate members and airports during all conference activities. It was at the Charlottetown Conference that IAAE Canada solicited corporate members interested in working with the Board of Directors in the Corporate Representative position, as the current Corporate Representative’s three year term comes to an end in June 2012. With so many qualified and experienced individuals coming forward to express their interest in this position, the Board decided to form a Corporate Committee to utilize the skills and talents of Eric Tolton, Greg Richardson, Elvio Pecchia and Kelvin Williamson. Since its inception in July 2011, the Corporate Committee is contributing to provide greater focus on IAAE Canada’s Corporate Members and the value that IAAE Canada can create. In 2011, the corporate membership increased by 8% to 47 members. The Board recognizes the importance of corporate membership and the need to increase participation across all segments of industry. In this regard, several initiatives are being undertaken by the Corporate Committee: 1.Improvements to the IAAE Canada website with up to date information on upcoming conferences, increased visibility and free advertising for members, a forum section to share ideas and information, and improved links to the corporate member websites. 2.Increased recruitment of corporate members through airport member contacts, industry conferences and assistance from the corporate representative. 3.Preparation of a corporate membership package outlining the many benefits of being a member. 4.Continued support & preparation for the IAAE Canada Magazine, which has increased IAAE Canada visibility and value to our stakeholders and customers (Now in its 3rd full year of production) 5.Support for the 2012 FOAM Conference to be held in Victoria in June 2012 6.Support for the upcoming IAAE / AAAE Montreal August 2012 International Conference: The Evolution of the Airport and Air Carrier Industry to be held in Montreal in August 2012 7.Support the ongoing development of IAAE training material and content In closing, I want to thank IAAE Canada for the opportunity to work with a dedicated and talented group on the Board of Directors over the past three years and wish IAAE Canada all the best in the future. Respectfully, Paul Cudmore IAAE Canada Corporate Representative 39

training Committee 2011 was a year of ideas and technology for the IAAE Canada Training Committee. The first big idea developed in late 2010 when the Board decided to develop an online training platform with courses designed to supplement our classroom-based courses. The on-line courses were targeted at frontline staff, management staff that are new to the airport industry, and even to Airport Board Members or City Councillors that govern an airport. IAAE Canada launched the first Airport 101 Online Courses at the FOAM Conference in Charlottetown PEI last spring and has been adding a new Airport 101 module to our course offerings every six weeks or so. In 2012 we will be adding more Airport 101 On-line Courses to our Catalogue, as well as a new series of airport courses, and perhaps some general workplace courses. Our second big idea was to deliver the right training to the right people at the right time, and in 2011 we recognized that we were missing training products that deliver advanced training to our highly experienced members. Based on the success of our Airport Systems Planning Course in 2010 we are bringing this course back in Montreal in the summer of 2012. I encourage you to look at the course summary and the credentials of the instructors, and challenge you to say there is nothing new to learn in this course. We are also developing some advanced airport courses that deal with Canadian issues. For those people that cannot make it to a classroom course we have plans to get training to them as well, but more on that later in 2012. During 2011 IAAE Canada put on 22 courses in 16 cities including our Accreditation Academy which was held in Toronto. We held courses in all regions of Canada including three courses in the Territories. Halifax Airport had a strong turn-out by hosting three courses in 2011. Whitehorse and Quebec City each hosted two courses in 2011. It is interesting that these three airports are among the best in Canada when it comes to airport service quality awards. Coincidence? Perhaps a well trained workforce helps support a quality airport. IAAE Canada will continue to provide our course schedule to you in the weekly e-Report. If you would like to host a course please contact Tom Coupland, our Executive Coordinator. If you cannot host a course, consider the added value of networking by sending your staff away to take a course with other airport professionals. I look forward to another year of working with the dedicated members of the Training Committee. This team works very hard to bring quality airport training to the Canadian airport community. We look forward to continuing to offer old favourites like WAMSCR, adding new initiatives like our on-line training program, and developing new courses to challenge our experienced members. Accreditation Committee The year 2011 saw one member achieve the coveted and industry recognized Mark of an Airport Professional. Please join me in congratulating James Hall A.A.E., Airport Operations Manager, Kelowna Airport on his achievement. An additional 21 members took the first step in realizing accreditation by achieving their Certified Member status(CM). Their names can be found in the New C.M.’s section of this report. The Accreditation Committee’s ongoing responsibility is to ensure that the IAAE Canada Accreditation Program maintains the high professional standards that have been developed to date. Of equal importance the committee is mandated to continuously seek enhancements to the program in the ever evolving world of aviation. The airport industry has high expectations and requires knowledgeable professionals to manage airports. The Accreditation Committee will ensure that newly accredited members have the required knowledge to meet these high expectations. The Accreditation Committee provides a mentorship program to guide all CM candidates giving ongoing guidance to each candidate throughout the three year accreditation process. The Board of Examiners, which includes a majority of the Mentors, helps to maintain the high standards by approving management paper topics and outlines, the final review of management papers and conducting oral exam interviews. The Accreditation Committee understands the difficulty in meeting demanding workloads while also striving to achieve your accreditation; however, the Committee & Mentors will do their best to ensure each member is set up for success to achieve this valuable milestone within the time frame of the program. If I can be of any assistance to anyone thinking about beginning the journey to become an accredited member, please do not hesitate to contact me through the IAAE Canada website. the Board of examiners As a member of IAAE Canada board of examiners, it is our role to mentor candidates in achieving the credential of Accredited Airport Executive (A.A.E.) - “The Mark of an Airport Professional”. The board of examiners are dedicated to assist individuals who undertake completion of a university level thesis management paper, and proceed to the final interview. Understand that your examiner wants you to do well. Having been through the process, I know it can be perceived as a rather long and daunting task for those just embarking. Accreditation is an extra level of achievement beyond school, licenses, and professional designations. Candidates should be applauded for voluntarily embarking on the program, above and beyond their day-to-day job duties and home life. An examiner remembers how intimidating it can be to develop a topic that will resonate with colleagues, spend weekends writing and rewriting a paper, and then be faced with a panel of judges! As an examiner, I glean as much out of the process as the candidate. The experience exposes mentors to management paper topics that colleagues at other airports and/or in different fields of operation, are passionate about. Candidates typically propose hot topics involving leading edge technologies, new management techniques, etc. Mentors are exposed to the latest airport thinking across Canada, that we wouldn’t necessarily encounter in our own area of expertise. I also appreciate that the process also permits mentors across Canada to contribute remotely, and still feel part of the organization, although distance limitations may not permit us to necessarily be there in person. Being an examiner ultimately means expanding one’s own training and knowledge, while assisting a candidate with his/her own airport specific education. Sheila McGuigan A.A.E. the Board of examiners Over 40 years of working on airports in Canada, more than 26 of those as an Airport Manager, I believe the inception of IAAE Canada was one of the most significant events in my career. An association of airport professionals in Canada helped to validate the diverse skills, knowledge and abilities that are the hallmarks of those of us who manage airports. IAAE Canada spread that validation across the country and included managers at airports of all sizes, complexities and activities. Presently, as one of the members of the Board of Examiners, I share the responsibility of ensuring the integrity of our accreditation process. IAAE Canada, as a self-regulating organization, establishes and maintains our own standards. Airport owners across the country seek qualified, experienced airport managers to operate, maintain and develop their airports. Routinely, they show a preference for accredited IAAE Canada members in their recruitment processes. The Board of Examiners is instrumental in ensuring that only candidates who meet IAAE Canada’s high standards are accredited, and can use the letters ‘AAE’ behind their name. So, the opportunity to participate on the Board of Examiners for IAAE Canada is an honour, even an obligation, to ensure the integrity and reputation of the ‘AAE’ designation remains high. It is not only a chance to ensure the integrity of our accreditation requirements, but also to encourage aspirants to achieve that professional standard. The Board of Examiners is a group of individual experienced, dedicated and accredited airport professionals; we are responsible for challenging the knowledge, experience and ability of the candidates to ensure they have earned the privilege of accreditation. The Board of Examiners play a critical role in the accreditation process, as candidates go through training, examinations, the successful completion of a management paper and the interview process. The Board of Examiners’ role is not only to help grow our airport professional ranks across the country, but to ensure we maintain the high standards that were established for IAAE Canada from the start. This organization of airport professionals should continue to grow, but our high standards should always be maintained. Participating on the IAAE Canada Board of Examiners is a key role in ensuring the “AAE” designation is truly the mark of an airport professional. Shawn Sutherland A.A.E. 5th Annual facility,Operations & Airport Managers Conference They say the first five years are the hardest, well, we made it and in style. We were pleasantly surprised to have surpassed once again the numbers of our previous conferences. This suggests that we are doing something right that we aim to keep. 2011’s conference was held in Charlottetown, PEI. It was a first for many of the delegates to venture to the friendly Island, and the locals treated us royally and kept up their reputation. We even got a write-up in the local newspaper. The Charlottetown Airport did itself proud as it helped us organize and host the event. The Lobster feast certainly seemed to be a hit even though it was a rather chilly evening. Of course the talks were the main reason the delegates came and feedback tells us that each year, we continue to have a good mix of topics that are interesting and informative and as topical and timely as possible, given that we plan a year ahead. A further tribute is our Sponsors who each year help us by participating. They included for the second time, as Gold Sponsor, Vanderlande Industries Ltd., Silver Sponsors Black & McDonald, EBA Engineering Consultants Ltd., & Tradewind Scientific Ltd. all of whom have sponsored all five FOAM conferences and Bronze Sponsors ADB Airfield Solutions, Commissionaires, Gibbings Consulting Ltd, LNT Solutions, Team Eagle & Hatch Mott MacDonald. We also wish to thank our other sponsors Pryde Schropp McComb, Charlottetown Airport, Black & McDonald (Maritimes) & Fort McMurray Airport. Some of these sponsors have been IAAE Canada members for many years and without such sponsors we could not put on a conference like this. We owe them a big thank you and hopefully you include such on your list of vendors to talk to when you are in a buying mood. In 2012 we go west to Victoria, BC so why not plan to join us Jun 4th to 6th, 2012.

Online training launch Training is an important part of any industry, and even more so for the constantly evolving Canadian Aviation Industry. Training needs in the Canadian Aviation Industry are both extensive and specific in respect to the many facets of operating our airports. IAAE Canada has a well-established and highly popular catalogue of in-class training. We’ve trained approximately 1500 people at our in-class training over the last six years. With all of the great responses we’ve received and the many returning customers, it’s a tradition we will continue to build on. However, after some invaluable feedback from our members on their changing training needs, IAAE Canada began to look at ways to meet these new requirements and provide a different type of training. In 2011, we launched our Airports 101 Online Training Modules. These online courses offer users a fundamental level of understanding on a number of topics and can be accessed from anywhere in the world, at any time, with an internet connection. Designed to give users an essential level of knowledge on all aspects of airport operations, they are a benefit to any airport employee. These courses are useful for small and large airports and can be used as a primary training for all airport employees or as a complement to current in-house training. In the last year, we’ve added: Aircraft De-icing, Airport Security, Documentation, Introduction to Canadian Airport Operations, Financial Operations and Ground Services Equipment and are releasing new modules approximately every 6 – 8 weeks. Through 2012, we hope to have 15-20 Airport 101 courses ranging from bird and wildlife control to airport marketing. We invite you to try one out for free in The Airports 101: Course Showcase, which is an online sample course offered to familiarize users with the course format and arrangement and is available on our website. Cryotech Deicing Technology is a division of General Atomics International Services Corporation, a San Diego-based company that specialized in energy-related research and product development. In 1992 General Atomics purchased the deicing business of Chevron Chemicals Company. Included in the acquisition was the production facility at Fort Madison, Iowa, plus all patents, processes, and rights developed by Chevron. The business was renamed Cryotech Deicing Technology, the root word “cryo” meaning cold. A world leader in acetate technology, Cryotech manufactures and markets environmentally compatible acetatebased highway commercial, and airport runway deicers. Acetates are considered safe for the environment because they readily biodegrade and exhibit low toxicity to vegetation and aquatic life. Acetates have low corrosion rates, and are ideal for application on reinforced concrete structures such as bridges and parking garages. Acetates also have a residual effect, working longer than common deicers. In 1998 Cryotech’s Ft. Madison, Iowa plant received ISO 9002 Certification for its quality process systems. ISO is an internationally recognized quality model. It provides assurance to customers that the products they receive are produced and shipped under rigorous international quality standards. Cryotech is the first manufacturer in North America in its industry to receive this recognition, reaffirming its position as an industry leader in acetate-based deicers. 1999 Cryotech formed an agreement with Kilfrost Ltd. in Europe to manufacture and distribute Kilfrost Type I and Type IV Aircraft deicers throughout North America. The fluids are propylene glycol-based, offering superior environmental and holdover performance. September 15th, 2010 marked a new era for a group of leading Canadian design firms as they adopted the name DIALOG for their recent merger. DIALOG has a track record of award-winning collaborative design excellence. Founded by the merged firms of Cohos Evamy + Hotson Bakker Boniface Haden + Mole White Associates + Office for Urbanism, DIALOG is committed to the practice of sustainable design with a focus on the success of clients and communities. Working from studios in Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto and Vancouver, DIALOG credits its strength to its outstanding multidisciplinary team who deliver excellence and a collaborative approach to the provision of architectural, engineering, interior design, planning and urban design services. Building connections Design in transportation is about connections - between neighbourhoods, communities, cities, municipalities, countries. The experience is as important as the function. Airports are more than just a clearinghouse for airplanes, people and cargo - they are the gateway to a region. An airport should be a welcoming and worry-free experience for passengers, and a reflection of the culture of the community. Since the early 1990s, airports have also been businesses that must generate revenue, so layouts have to be strategic, reflecting the buying patterns of passengers and airport personnel. In addition, as airports expand and technology changes, airport design must accommodate the rapidly changing fleets of many different carriers. We handle this through modularity, which makes airports, control towers and other transportation buildings effective today, and flexible enough to meet future needs. Our Areas of Practice DIALOG is a fully integrated multidisciplinary practice which includes architecture, programming, urban planning and design, interior design, graphic design and 3D modeling, and structural, mechanical and electrical engineering. We provide our services in many sectors including airports and transportation, retail, commercial, public markets, arts and culture, education, health care, science and technology, government, and energy related work. We have been successful in winning outstanding, ambitious commissions and developing longlasting collaborative relationships with our clients. Size of the Firm DIALOG credits its strength to its outstanding multidisciplinary team of over 500 talented individuals, located in studios in Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto and Vancouver. Our team is supported by state-of-the-art IT resources which allow seamless communication and flow of information across our studio network.
