2013–2014 Hyde School Annual Report The 2013–2014 Hyde School Annual Report is published by the Office of Development and Alumni Relations, and lists gifts made to Hyde’s Boarding Schools in Bath, Maine and Woodstock, Connecticut, between July 1, 2013 and June 30, 2014. The listing of contributors does not include donors who gave directly to Hyde’s Charter Schools. Payments on previous year pledges are not included in the acknowledgements.

Dear Friends of Hyde, As I put pen to paper, all of us at Hyde are consumed with high-octane enthusiasm thanks to some of our fall athletic teams. For example, our Bath men‘s soccer squad knocked off the Lumberjacks of longtime rival Hebron in a MAISAD finals contest that went into multiple overtime periods with both schools deadlocked at 0-0 before four-year senior Kiefer Cundy ’15 slammed a shot to the back of the net with four seconds remaining. Meanwhile, two hundred miles to the south, our Woodstock football team garnered Hyde’s first-ever post-season bowl game victory with a 61-46 win over host Kingswood-Oxford. As I noted on my blog, I don‘t believe I‘ve ever seen a Hyde football team put it all together the way the Wolfpack did on that sunny, cold, and crisp fall day. As excited as we are about these teams, suffice it to say that they‘re far from the only game in town. There‘s a lot poppin’! For the short list, we: • Were inspired by the speeches delivered by our graduates at ceremonies in Bath, Woodstock, and Hyde-Bronx • Opened the 2014-15 academic year with a combined enrollment of over 300 students, the most in several years • Designed and constructed a new lobby entrance with new state-of-the-art bathrooms at our theater in Woodstock (and you probably can‘t fully appreciate this improvement if you never had to make your way to the very back of the building on a busy family weekend in order to find… much less, use… the facilities!) • Renovated our classrooms in Woodstock‘s Annhurst Hall • Moved, redesigned, and installed a new state-of-the-art weight room on the Bath campus • Instituted a very popular robotics team on the Hyde-Bath campus that will function as a winter sport • Hosted the 2nd Annual Maine State Youth Leadership Alliance conference with 350 students on the Bath campus earlier this month. (Hyde old-timers will be interested to know that our keynote speaker was former BIW CEO Bill Haggett, a member of Hyde’s original Board of Trustees.) To be sure, there were also moments of sadness. We tragically lost Hyde teaching stalwart Paul Hurd ’67 in an automobile accident over a year ago. The memorial service in his honor probably had the largest audience of any event ever held at Hyde and featured uplifting words and music in his honor. We also lost Ed Legg, Hyde teacher, coach, and Head of School (1968–1982) who died unexpectedly at his home in Kennebunk, Maine in August. In the same month, we were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Fran Fowler who served as our librarian in Bath for 23 years. (Remembrances of all three can be found on Malcolm‘s Blog at www.hyde.edu.) As always, Hyde is a place of intense highs and challenging lows. Perhaps that is why it remains a vibrant place for kids, parents, faculty, and alumni. You are one of those people who make it so. While Hyde operates in a fiscally conservative manner, we also remain largely tuition-driven with tuition dollars covering about 93% of our costs. The remaining 7% is contributed in the form of gifted dollars from people like you. Although 7% seems like a small number, it is what makes the difference. It has been said that the difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little word “extra.” I thank you for helping us make that “extra” possible and pledge that we will strive to continue to be worthy of your belief and confidence in us. In Memory of Michael V. Dawes, Sr. 1944-2010 Mike Dawes and his wife, Lynn, joined the Hyde School Community when their son, Mike, Jr., enrolled in 1989. Their passion for Hyde and vision for education helped to remind others why they‘d chosen to become members of the Hyde School family. Mike served Hyde in many different capacities; Chief Financial Officer, Director of Admissions, Director of Development, Associate Head of School, teacher, and coach. He worked on both the Maine and Connecticut campuses, where he mentored both students and faculty. Mike is remembered for his tireless commitment to guiding his students, peers, and colleagues toward their greatest potential. In Memory of Paul W. Hurd, II 1947-2013 Paul enrolled at Hyde in the first graduating Class of 1967. While at Hyde he excelled on many fronts including scoring the first touchdown in the school‘s history and setting records in track and field. He went on to graduate from Bowdoin College in 1971 with a degree in History. While at Bowdoin Paul was a James Bowdoin Scholar, a member of the Chi Psi fraternity, and sang bass with the Meddiebempsters double quartet. After receiving his MAT from the University of Chicago, he embarked on a distinguished career in teaching. Following a year at Beaver Country Day School (MA) he returned to Hyde. During the next forty years he served in a variety of roles from teacher to Head of School. He was also a pioneer in establishing additional Hyde campuses in New Haven and Woodstock, CT, but his true love was teaching. Generations of Hyde alumni knew Paul Hurd as perhaps their most demanding teacher, but also one who always believed in their best. His government class was a signature rite of passage for all Hyde seniors. His course focused on one’s need to balance personal freedom and responsibility. It was not unusual for a class session to incorporate Aristotle, The Band, and surfing. Paul Hurd was also a lifelong student of history having served on the staff both at Colonial Williamsburg and the Ohio Historical Society. Above all, Paul Hurd was a family man. As a teacher in his early days and a member of Hyde’s performing troupe, America‘s Spirit, he met his life partner, Laurie Gauld. They were married in 1977. Together they spent Paul‘s most cherished moments: walking on the beach collecting sand dollars at Popham Beach, strolling through Colonial Williamsburg, or running and cycling with family members and friends.
