8 Houses in Marvila Açúcar Street, 43 what? when? where? size

housing (academic project) 2008-2009 Marvila (Lisbon, Portugal) 300sq.m + 1400sq.m

To whom should 8 houses be made in Marvila? Who would be interested in living there? Should we lose the opportunity to promote the (fast) rent of houses in a period of financial crisis like the one started in 2008? Could there be a new housing management model that could - at the same time - boost an old industrial site rehabilitating abandoned lots?

7

The project tries to make much more than a place for 8 families to live in. After identifying a lot it was essential to promote a new type of living inside it. “Public” areas (interior and exterior) were maximized at the same time that the areas related with the housing were minimized. This tries to respond to the requests of a person who lives in residential transience which tend to be minimal in a sense. 8 very small houses between 2 pre-existing walls (4.50m apart), developed over a bookshop and a biströ (related to the exterior public space and the interior housing areas) emphasizes the ambiguity of introverted and extroverted space.

Library in Marvila Poço do Bispo Dock what? when? where? size

library (academic project) 2008-2009 Marvila (Lisbon, Portugal) 2200sq.m

23

This project starts with two questions: “what type of public building Marvila needs?” and “can it connect the historical center to a new urban epicenter?”. The local population asked for a library or theater so that the currant stigma about Marvila could be eclipsed. Could these two programs be associated and fused just like contents in an iPod? Located at the Poço do Bispo Dock (where an industrial metallic shed exists and plays a deep formal influence regarding the new proposal), the library is interpreted as a book fortress where beneath it appears an urban stage.

Temporary Structure what? when? where? size

temporary structure (ghost project) 2010 n.d. 700sq.m

5 Things you should do to improve your well-being: - Connect with people - Be active - Be aware of what’s happening - Keep lerning, learn something new every day - Give!

34

With the financial crisis, societies all around the world have changed. It is in these times that the need to exchange knowledge is important. At the same time there is a lack of use of lots of urban voids. The idea is to develop a temporary structure, to be located in these spaces, promoting the connection between people. The structure wishes to (at the same time that it allows for varios crossings in the squares where this structure can be located) provoque a sense of wonder of whatever is inside the spaces. This should be a sorr of “speaker’s corner” where free activities occur.

Campus Internationl School Cleveland, Ohio, USA what? when? where? size responsabilities

New School Design Competition July 2011 Cleveland, Ohio, USA 8000 sq.m (net area) Concept design collaboration and development.

A new kindergarten through twelfth grade (K-12) public school in Downtown Cleveland, that breaks from the standardized formula for prescribed programming and designing to imagine a school environment that supports new approaches to education. It also addresses a larger urban context with which the school is situated to enable students to engage the city and enable students to learn from the world around them.

Having that in mind the design approaches the theme of cloister-type spaces that promotes exchange and socialization. The elementary school in the ground generated around the cloister and the sense of stability for children growing up; the middle and high schools stays in a floating structure defying gravity while creating a sense of creativity and challenge. The spaces in between these two will be a terraced roof open to the outside. This courtyard will be used mainly by the eldest students, characterized by a sense of freedom.

Social equipment 2012Santos-o-Velho, Lisbon, Portugal 7000 sq.m Final tender package

The new building is characterized by a very simple composition, looking the best integration in place. The project presents a timeless and discrete image, achieved in part because of the corrugated tiles that cover the main west faรงade, diluting the construction against the sky. This social equipment embodies a complex program organized in a stratified way. The program includes the following facilities: - multifunctional entrance level - kindergarten - nursery - primary school - daycare centre. The construction also includes a parking located in the subsoil, to 44 cars.
