S

ome of my fondest memories from my childhood are visiting mom, who worked in the hospital as a nurse—and a great one, I might

add. Many children (and adults) are terrified of the hospital, doctors, medical equipment, etc., but for me it was all so exciting; I saw the hospital as a land of opportunity, innovations and hope. I wanted to make a difference.

As a teenager, I committed almost every weekend to volunteering in the hospital. I primarily volunteered in the post-partum/maternity unit.

Many would think this is a place of true happiness and joy because of the constant flow of new life, but there is another side. Not all

My mother instilled in me the value of good healthcare and diligent research while being an active part in my healthcare. It was no surprise that I have spent my adult career working in the healthcare field. I started as a receptionist in an after-hours pediatric call center and dedicated many hours, education, hard work and drive toward eventually working in medical education administration. What better way to make a difference than assisting in the education of future doctors, and future amazing doctors I would need?

My family and I have been through many medical struggles over the years. We have dealt with cancers, countless surgeries, broken limbs, dental emergencies and chronic illnesses. Each step along the way, the questions have always been the same. Where do we go? Who do we see?

For the last four and a half years I have been working with NJ Top Docs/NJ Top Dentists and I have found a new place to make a difference, a place to help others find the best healthcare provider they can. These providers are not voted for but are simply listed with no criteria or just. They are providers who really do make a difference, really are great, really are Top Doctors and Top Dentists. Additionally, through our social media platforms, press releases and our blog we try to pose questions, present research and provide patients with the tools to be an active participant in their healthcare.

Another technology that Dr. Breiterman has incorporated in his practice is the E4D, an intraoral scanning and milling process that allows crowns to be made on site.

It provides the flexibility of custom coloring crowns to match the rest of the teeth without patients having to wait endless weeks while work goes back and forth to a dental lab.

“It is an exciting time to be in dentistry,” Dr. Breiterman continues. “The level of knowledge and technology that now exists in dentistry is amazing.” Since graduating dental school, Dr. Breiterman has earned more than 3,000 hours of post-graduate continuing education, putting him in an elite group of dental professionals.

Recently he was recognized for his achievement, earning the prestigious Lifelong Service and Recognition Award by the Academy of General Dentistry, becoming one of just a few hundred dentists worldwide to do so.

Dr. Breiterman treats a wide spectrum of dental issues, including temporomandibular joint disorders, implant dentistry, bone and tissue grafting, endodontics, periodontics, rehabilitation and smile makeovers.

go to get the work done. To better cater to my patients’ needs, I brought in specialists. Because my patients are already familiar with our office, we’re finding that our patients are actually following through with their prescribed treatments and procedures, and they’re healthier because of it,” explains Dr. Romano, who has been featured on many television news programs, including Dateline NBC and WPIX news.

He has been performing cosmetic procedures since 1989, and he is part of the original group of doctors to offer these specialized procedures in the of New Jersey. “My passion is making people look awesome,” says Dr. Romano. children myself. All of my kids are involved in different activities and I need to be places, too. I know what it’s like to go somewhere and have to sit and wait when you need to be somewhere else. I can’t stand it, so we try not to do that,” adds Dr. Cuozzo, who also serves as a Clinical Associate at the University of Pennsylvania School of Orthodontics for School of Dental Medicine.

To further cater to busy moms and dads, Cuozzo Orthodontics provides parents with access to their child’s files and X-rays through an online portal so parents can access information from home and email images to their child’s primary dentist.

At Cuozzo Orthodontics, it’s not all about appeasing the parents. They want to ensure the children are happy with their care as well. Being a parent has helped Dr. Cuozzo better understand his patients’ fears and find ways to keep them at ease.

“Keeping kids relaxed starts with the staff—and my staff is spectacular.

A lot of them have been here for over 20 years, so they’re all very well-trained and they work really well with kids. The majority of them have children of their own,” explains Dr. Cuozzo. “The office is also a friendly environment. We have video games in the waiting room, it’s well-lit, and we have an open bay treatment room, which means all the kids are in the same room and can see each other.”

Not only does this provide a fun atmosphere for the patients, it also allows timid or apprehensive children to observe other children’s care. “When a scared child sees there’s nobody screaming, yelling or crying, they start to relax. They realize it can’t be that bad.”

Most importantly, Dr. Cuozzo loves practicing orthodontics, and it shows in his high-quality work. “The best part about orthodontics is changing kids’ lives. Kids are self-conscious

when their teeth are crooked or they have large gaps,” says Dr. Cuozzo.

“We’ve had a lot of kids cry the day they get their braces off. When they look at the pictures of their teeth before they had braces, they just can’t believe how much better their smile looks. Some patients become totally overwhelmed. For me, that’s the best part of my job!”

Dr. Lam and his staff have been extensively trained to treat children and manage all temperaments.

Everything is explained in simple, child-friendly language, which not only serves as an educational experience but also helps children feel less nervous. “When you can help a child not only get through a

checkup but also something more difficult like a filling, and then walk out with a smile, it’s a very rewarding experience,” says Dr. Lam, who is a member of a very select group of internationally board-certified pediatric dentists.

Dr. Lam is one of the few dentists in the state who is trained to treat both children and adults with special needs and developmental disorders.

Dr. Lam can care for patients with unique demands and those who require sedation at either his Florham Park office or Morristown Medical Center.

Dr. Lam cares about building a strong, healthy foundation for his patients’ long-term health. “All too often we underestimate the impact that our oral health can have on our overall health and well-being,” he explains. Reasons You Should Smile Now

know what you’re thinking: Another person telling me to smile. When it comes to smiling— whether it’s the natural result of a happy moment or a request from photographers or dentists—we all acknowledge the emotional benefits associated with it. Smiling, even through life’s tough times, changes our mental state and mood for the better. But what does it do for us physically? Consider this: In the last couple of years, researchers have found that showing off our million-dollar grins, even when it’s forced, contains physical benefits, and can improve your heart health and make you live longer. Here are five scientific and fun reasons you should want to smile.

The Facts 1. Reduces Stress Who needs a stress ball when you have your face? According to a recent study published in Psychological Science, smiling can reduce feelings of stress, regardless of whether the person actually feels happy or not. Researchers Tara Kraft and Sarah Pressman at the University of Kansas noted the way different types of smiling, and being aware that you’re smiling, helped volunteers recover from stressful situations.

Additionally, students’ heart rates were monitored before, during, and after being asked to do stressful tasks. Their findings showed that those who were asked to smile had significantly lower heart rates than those who didn’t. The study also found that if the smiling occured during a stressful activity—not just after—it can help the body and mind recover more quickly. The next time you’re stuck in traffic or dealing with

How does smiling help boost your immune system? As we know, poorly-managed stress can lead to many health issues, such as heart disease, diabetes, depression, digestive distress, and obesity. And, along with reducing the effects of stress, smiling can lower blood pressure, help you relax and fight off illnesses. Need more proof? A recent study by the Smiling Hospital Research Team found that smiling can increase your leukocytes—the first line of defense in your immune system. After hospitalized children were given more attention when visited by celebrities who made them smile, they had a higher white blood cell count, making for a stronger immune system.

Smiling may be the elixir to a longer life. A study from the London University College, published in the PNAS (Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences), found that happier people have a 35 percent lower risk of a premature death than the least happy. Researcher Andrew Steptoe asked more than 4,000 people, ages ranging from 52 to 79, how they were feeling on a particular day and recorded their answers on a five-point scale. After monitoring these people for five years, Steptoe found that the people with a higher PA score (known as Positive Affect, meaning their answers had higher points) were at a reduced risk of dying over this period of time. Hopefully we’ll be told what happens if Steptoe follows up again 10 or 15 years from now.

3. Helps You Tolerate Pain Research has found that smiling can act as a painkiller, a kind of natural drug with healing effects on the body.

It releases healing hormones, such as feel-good serotonin and pain-lowering endorphins, lifting your mood. When it comes to physical pain, research suggests that people who frown during an unpleasant procedure report feeling more pain than those who do not. Pressman, who co-wrote a study on stress in 2012, solidified these findings in her follow-up 2014 study focusing on smiling and pain.

Everything You Need to Know About OPERATION SMILE

very three minutes a child is born with a cleft malformation, meaning that one out of every 700 children suffers from a mouth deformity around the globe.

While children born in the United States are treated at an early age, benefiting from our our advanced technology and highly trained professionals, the same cannot be said of those born in third world countries. Since many countries lack the proper medical care needed to provide corrective surgeries, many, if not most, children go untreated.

This sobering fact is what motivated Dr. William P. Magee Jr., a plastic and craniofacial surgeon, and his wife Kathy Magee, to establish the nonprofit medical service organiza-

tion Operation Smile. Since 1982, they have been helping children and young adults overcome cleft facial defects.

For over 30 years, Operation Smile has provided their time and efforts to provide untreated cleft lip and palate patients from low- and middle-income families all around the world with operations and post-operation medical attention that they would not have received otherwise. In a 2003 interview, Kathy Magee spoke about her first mission trip to the Philippines.

“We saw hundreds of children, and saw many more turned away,” she said. Seeing these families and children left helpless and untreated influenced the Magees to create the organization.

Facial cleft deformities, which are breaches in the lips or palate, essentially occur when body parts do not develop correctly during pregnancy. While the precise causes of these defects are unknown, researchers say that if left untreated patients can develop numerous health complications.

According to Operation Smile, “A child with a cleft has twice the odds of dying before their first birthday.

Children with cleft conditions who survive may have difficulty eating, speaking, hearing or breathing properly.” Other complications include hearing loss, dental problems and overall poor health.

Besides health problems, children are often harassed by their peers for looking different.

Meet Some of the Celebrity Smile Ambassadors Jessica Simpson: This singer-turnedfashion-designer has been working alongside Operation Smile for over 10 years. Since 2003, Operation Smile has been one of Simpson’s top philanthropies, and she has helped the organization tremendously. Not only has Simpson performed at numerous Operation Smile events, but she also spoke about the organization on Capitol Hill. In 2005, Simpson joined a mission in Kenya, where she witnessed a corrective surgery and experienced firsthand the great service Operation Smile provides to children.

Headquartered in Virginia Beach, Virginia, the Operation Smile team is comprised of nearly 5,400 volunteers who possess vast medical backgrounds, including surgeons, pediatricians, anesthesiologists and speech pathologists. To date, Operation Smile has provided nearly 220,000 corrective surgeries to children suffering cleft abnormalities. The organization dedicates a generous amount of time on mission trips to train local doctors so they are capable of performing surgeries themselves.

Operation Smile has reached out to patients in over 60 countries, including Brazil, Cambodia, Kenya and Colombia.

The organization gained attention when Mother Teresa wrote a letter

asking if the organization could treat patients in India. Since then, Operation Smile has been accredited for its efforts to end cleft deformations by several highprofile people. The organization has been granted the Unsung Hero of Compassion award by the 14th Dalai Lama, the President’s Call to Service award by President George W. Bush, Jr., and the Presidential Citation for Private Sector Initiatives from President Ronald Reagan.

Besides the awards, Operation Smile has a long list of celebrity and corporate ambassadors, including Marriott Hotels and Johnson & Johnson, who volunteer their time to raise money and awareness for the fight to end cleft deformities through the organization.

Molly Sims: The noted supermodel, mostly known for her appearances in Sports Illustrated, has been a crucial part of the Operation Smile team. When Sims joined the organization on one of the organization’s mission trips to Peru in 2007, she said, “Operation Smile volunteers are wonderful, beautiful people who change children’s lives.”

Since then, Sims has been active in her role as a Smile Ambassador and helped co-host the Smile Collection Fundraising Gala in New York City.

Bill and Giuliana Rancic: The powerhouse couple, who star on their own reality show Giuliana and Bill, have raised awareness for Operation Smile by hosting their own fundraising events to benefit the organization. Bill, who rose to fame after winning the first season of Donald Trump’s The Apprentice, hosted the Show Your Love campaign on Valentine’s Day in 2010.

Giuliana, best known as a host on E!, held an event later in the year called Be the Light, which raised $75,000 for the organization.

ORAL CANCER: The Latest on Cause and Prevention

t’s no secret that I’m not a fan of going to the dentist. Despite the efforts dentists have made to update their offices with the latest technology and promote a pain-free environment, there’s something about “what’s to come” that makes me reluctant to schedule an appointment. Nonetheless, after learning about the high incidence of oral cancer and the dismal survival rate,

I may never forget a dentist appointment again. The next one may save my life.

Here’s the hard truth: in 2014, 43,000 Americans will have been diagnosed with oral cancer, the sixth most common cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. No longer is oral cancer associated only with with high-risk behavior such as

smoking and excessive drinking of alcohol, or even for people over 50, or people who have a history of cancer. New research has found that young, non-smoking individuals are the fastest-growing demographic to develop oral cancer, due to the human papilloma virus (HPV16), a sexually transmitted disease.

While some of these cases are low-risk, 40 percent of those diag-

nosed with oral cancer will not live another five years if it’s not treated right away. That prognosis sounds grim, but dentists everywhere have become more determined to conduct oral screenings during routine appointments to detect the early signs of oral cancer. The way to survive is through early detection.

What is oral cancer?

According to the National Cancer Institute, oral cancer “forms in tissues of the oral cavity (the mouth) or the oropharynx (the part of the throat at the back of the mouth).”

This not only includes the roof of the mouth and the area behind the wisdom teeth, but also the tongue, gums and the inner lining of lips and cheeks.

Oral cancer has such a low survival rate because it’s not usually detected until very late. Since the early stages are typically painless, the cancer often goes unnoticed until it spreads, leaving many undiagnosed until they are already suffering from chronic pain or loss of function.

Getting screened for oral cancer also prevents the high risk of producing second primary tumors, as survivors are 20 times more likely to develop a second cancer. Finding any abnormal tissue early on is essential. Oral cancer can produce major changes in speech, chewing, swallowing and oral health, causing the patient to have social problems and low self-esteem.

Contact your doctor immediately if you have any of these symptoms: •A lump or thickening of your cheek •A white or red patch on any part of your inner mouth or throat •A sore inside your mouth that doesn’t heal within two weeks •C hronic difficulty swallowing or chewing • Jaw swelling or difficulty moving your tongue or jaw • Numbness inside your mouth

Prevention Before beginning a full oral cancer screening, the dentist first checks the patient’s neck and mouth for discolorations, lumps or irregular tissue changes.

If any lesions are found, the dentist can choose a variety of procedures to ensure no cancerous areas are found. The doctor can coat the mouth with a blue dye, and the

areas that stain darker are likely to become cancerous. Another procedure involves collecting cells from the lip or oral cavity using a cotton swab or brush.

Most dentists use fluorescence staining, which consists of a mouth rinse that allows dentists to see any abnormalities under a light.

Dentists are starting to use the VELscope system, a fast and painless method to conduct oral cancer screenings.

Cleared by the FDA and approved

by Health Canada and the World Health Organization, VELscope has become a worldwide, awardwinning device that helps discover viral, fungal and bacterial infections, inflammation and tumors, and cancer and pre-cancerous symptoms.

The device emits a bright blue light to inspect the mouth and tongue. The light is sensitive to abnormal tissue changes, causing the soft tissue of the mouth to naturally glow if there are any significant problems. Since it’s a two-minute procedure that can be performed in the dentist’s office during a routine hygiene exam, it doesn’t require dyes or prolonged testing.

A two-minute exam makes all the difference. When discovered early, the five-year survival rate for oral cancer patients is about 83 percent.

Although April is technically Oral Cancer Awareness month, it is never too late to visit your dentist and get an oral cancer screening.
