Wanderlust Everywhere we go we collect experiences that inspire us, and our thirst for this experience leads to a strong desire to wander and explore the world. We are endlessly excited by unexpected discoveries as we live our daily lives. This season we were inspired by street art in many forms, from all over the world. The unique nature of street art is that it is both underground and accessible to all. From loose brushstrokes and dripping spray paint to orderly lines in fluorescent color, anything goes. The one constant is that the immediacy of its energy appears unexpectedly and provokes thought and curiosity. Where did it come from? Will it be gone tomorrow? In the HUDSON Fall/Winter 2012 collection, we sought to capture this visual energy and texture. From acid neon color to explosive prints and cutting edge technology paired with DIY details and hand finishing, we embraced the iconoclastic spirit of the street artist and pushed the design process in the name of wanderlust. We opened ourselves up to new ideas and unexpected revelations. We let our moods guide us from day to day inspired by a wide variety of books and genres of music. It is this perpetual need for discovery and evolution that compels us to keep moving. From day to day and season to season, it is this physical, visual, and spiritual journey that weaves throughout our lives and informs our work. A high profile list of celebrities, tastemakers and industry influencers from the fashion and entertainment worlds gathered at the Boom Boom Room at the Standard Hotel for the VIP event. With a backdrop of New York skyline, INTERVIEW’s October cover star Florence Welch, photographed wearing the Nico in Flash, along with the members of the Machine gave a mesmerizing performance for the packed audience. The HUDSON team has aspired to make next year’s collection timeless and unforgettable. Being faced with the many social and environmental concerns our future generations will have to endure has made us more conscious of how lucky we are to share this World with its variety of cultures and species. To celebrate our gratitude and appreciation of the world we live in today, we have embraced new production techniques which are less abrasive to the environment, and we set out to prove one can still be fashionable and elegant without endangering any animal species. We found our inspiration in the rainforest, in our vast oceans and looked at nature’s intricate patterns to create a new level of jeanswear. Recent technological advances have enabled us to simulate the beautiful range of colors found in the feathers of South American Birds and the delicate skin of Deep Ocean wildlife. We hope to inspire our consumers to join us in this journey of enlightenment and self-awareness making 2012 a year of evolution for the human race.

4XCOLOR PRINT Printing images on denim is no easy task, but at HUDSON we like a challenge. For Fall 2012 we decided to explore this technology, bringing to you our SECOND SKIN denim in a variety of prints. Due to the large surface required to cut and sew one pair of jeans (est. 1.5 yd.) we discovered rotary textile printing would give us the crisp look we required for the graphics used. The machine consists of a strong cast iron cylinder mounted in adjustable bearings capable of sliding up and down a stout steel axle. Each color requires a separate cylinder, in our case 4 separate cylinders are used to create one print.
The ultimate success of the designs depends on how the pattern is engraved. In the past these were engraved by hand, but over the years faster methods were created, in our case the images were etched. The design is first cast upon a zinc plate by means of an enlarging camera or reflectors. This plate is then painted in colors similar to the original and the outlines of each color are carefully engraved by hand and then transferred to a separate roller using a special varnish.
This roller is then placed in nitric acid, which acts only on those parts of it from which the varnish has been scraped. Each roller is then washed and retouched by hand to ensure accuracy. The end result is our newest “Space Invaders� printed denim to be launched in January 2012.

HUDSON is proud to embrace the new technology of denim laser printing. Using a laser beam directly on the surface of the denim attains this unique effect. The laser causes dyed areas to be oxidized, creating a ghost image of the pattern.

A dye laser consists of an organic dye mixed with a solvent, which may be circulated through a dye cell, or streamed through open air using a dye jet. A high-energy source of light is needed to “pump� the liquid beyond its lasing threshold. The active agent here becomes the beam of light.
This technology is being perfected to replace the more abrasive dying techniques, saving in average 97.5% of water used in a regular stone wash.

SUBLIMATION This technique is most commonly used in the car racing industry for the driver’s uniforms. The method is simple, using the CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black) conversion to create the most accurate shades of color, the image is printed on the sublimation paper at 300 dpi (dots per inch) which is then exposed to an industrial heat press along with the polyester blend fabric.
The secret ingredient is the ink used, first developed by NASA, these inks evaporate when exposed to high levels of temperature and bind themselves to the polyester fibers, the darkness of the print will be determined by the percentage of polyester found on the fabric.
With this knowledge, we created the Nico “Owl” print, inspired by the beautiful patterns found in the feathers of the North American Snow Owl, also known as the Scandinavian Night Bird. Its delicate beauty could only be translated into print using this high resolution method, available in our Nico Second Skin Denim. We are proud to offer it in the following shades for Spring 2012: Ghost Owl and Mystique.

FOIL PRINT HUDSON’s newest Stingray print was the result of an unusual experiment involving a knit printing technique where a clear agent is applied to the fabric; the clear foil is transferred using a high temperature press. The fabric is then sent to garment dye, where to our surprise, the foil inherited a different shade of the color desired, creating a 3D effect never seen before in the history of HUDSON. In addition to the color variation the foil gives a texture incredibly similar to the authentic animal skin that was inspired by. Due to the excitement over this great achievement, our Creative Director Benjamin Taverniti is making this style available right away and will be offered in Spring Colors in March 2012.

[Metallic] A subtle sheen lends sparkle to our Metallic jean. Each pair is hand sprayed with a special finish that gives it the metallic look without compromising comfort or softness. They’re fun and easy to wear all day long, but this brilliant look especially shines at night.

There are several intricate wash processes implemented in Fall collection, some require additional steps after they have been through the dye process. That is the case with our newest development in denim wash: our metallic finish can only be achieved after being hand sprayed with a custom sparkling agent and applied evenly throughout the garment.
The garment is then placed in a high temperature oven where it gets cured to ensure longevity and a soft hand feel. Metallics are available in our Krista Super Skinny in three colors: Space (Silver), Pacha (Gold) and Amnesia (Light Blue).

Creative Inspiration Music plays a huge role in the creative and design process of our work. Music helps clear mental blocks to creativity and get into the zone – relaxing us and triggering our subconscious creativity by blocking out the outside world and distractions. In the spirit of wanderlust, we listened to a wide variety of genres in putting together the FW12 collection. Hip hop, electronic and rock dominated our playlist and set the tempo for our process and each genre unlocked different emotions. Hip hop inspired confidence and fearlessness to push boundaries, Electronic music gave us the energy and enthusiasm to channel our creative energy, and Rock and Roll is a constant inspiration at HUDSON—it’s woven into our DNA and lives in everything we do.

The Design Process Just as “urban explorers” like to venture out to unseen regions of their surroundings to find beauty, so does Creative Director Benjamin Taverniti in the vast world of fashion. He inspired the HUDSON team to embrace techniques that allow us to transfer images onto our fabric without compromising the overall fit and feel of our denim. Constantly challenging us to step into new and unfamiliar grounds, giving no limits to one’s imagination, focusing only on the end result.

We have embraced technology such as Laser printing, Sublimation, Fabric and Foil printing to enhance our most popular styles. Restructuring the way denim is tested and constructed is a challenge the HUDSON team embraced, taking upon ourselves to think outside the box and stay positive in the face of adversity. All of our coated denim goes through a multistep process to achieve a jean with depth, richness and life. Each meticulously constructed pair of jeans is made from high quality Tencel stretch cotton – a natural, luxuriously soft and flattering fabric.
