Overview What is a watershed you ask? It is an area of land that seperates water to rivers, basins or seas. Watersheds are the only reason why we are able to receive water for our showers, sinks, laundry, etc. You will learn about the importance of watersheds and how they impact us as a society. The project we worked on was called the Watershed Project. We basically created this magazine and incorporate our knowledge into this magazine.

We will be explaining all of the work we achieved throughout this project and what you need to know about watersheds. There are arguments every day about how we should be using our watershed. Should we build dams or should we not? Dams are one of the biggest issues we have in terms of water. After reading this, we hope you form your own opinion about watersheds and whether or not you agree with dams.

Interviews Tanner Ragan|10/15/14 Enjoying nature’s scenery is a blessing. But how would we react if there were no trees, bushes, or any wildlife at all? It’s important to know how vital it is to protect our land and habitats of the wildlife. We also must look at water and how we use it in our everyday lives. Park Ranger Leana Bulay works at the San Dieguito River Park and spent nine years focusing on these problems. She does anything she can to conserve as many resources as possible.

What was your greatest accomplishment in your career? The restoration of the San Dieguito Lagoon. It started as a 17 year project by planning. When I came, it was just all dirt. There was no life and we were sworn to thrive the lagoon. It’s been five years since the avocadoes turned, the animals are flourishing, it really shows the effects of the enviornment.

Zach Esparza|10/18/14 I interviewed an “amateur planter” named Pauline Broda, she has her own garden and has been planting since she was very young. She has multiple plants, like basil & rosemary, and in the past has grown more, like strawberries and squash. Below is an excerpt from the interview. Do you have any water-conservative advice for anyone who may be interested in planting and making it water efficient? Well if you’re planning on doing decorative plants I’d suggest using the succulents, they don’t take much water, they look amazing, and there’s all different kinds. If you’re planning on doing food you can put it in the ground and they can usually find their own water pretty easily, but if you put it in a pot they tend to dry out a lot faster.

Agua Hedionda Agua Hedionda is a lagoon that is around 1.7 miles long and about .5 miles wide. It was established in 1990. The foundation that is involved with the lagoon has a website where you can help support the watershed and find out different ways where you

can make a difference not only in the lagoon but also in your community. This lagoon isn’t just about the water and the storage of it, there's also hundreds of species of animals that they call this watershed home. The animals that live in this watershed are

birds, fish, squirrels and many different species of marine life. There has been endagerment to the species of birds due to the lack of population. The lagoon is a very sensitive ecosystem that has been founded and taken care of by the agua hedionda foundation.

How To Proccess Our How To Project was a really fun and interesting project that we had done for our art class. We were asked to make a three to five page info-graphic that would guide you to complete tasks concerning with water. The works that we’re showcasing are a combination of all of our group’s own How to’s.

On the next pages, you will see the works made by all of our group members. Our work is intentionally super simple concerning with the guides and at some parts, may be funny. Enjoy our work!

Life Cycle of Salmon The life cycle of Salmon is very intricate and important. They start off as what you may guess, eggs. After they’ve hatched they become Alevin, newly hatched fish. After they’re newly hatched they go into the “fry” stage, and they need to find food for themselves, and survive. After the fry stage, they become Smolt; when they’ve become Smolt, they now can swim in salt water withour salt entering their blood stream.

After that, they now move onto ocean -life to finish growing, then move onto the spawning phase; they seek out the rivers in which they were born. The mature adults that have returned to their spawning rivers start the process over again and reproduce. That’s where the cycle ends for one, and starts for another. Dams can also greatly affect their cycle; it can block salmon from returning to their spawning rivers, and can disrupt the whole process greatly.

Behind the Scenes The classes of multimedia/art, humanities, and chemistry, we learned the meaning and impacts of a watershed. One of our biggest products was created in multimedia. It’s basically what you are reading at this moment. Another project was our infographics showing the pros and cons of watersheds and our How To’s showing the easiest steps on saving water.

One book we read was called, Cadillac Desert by Marc Reisner. The book was generally about the American West and how water was fought for, used, scavenged, etc. There were many points in the book that explains where our water went and why it dissapeared in a very detailed manner and would highly recommend this book if you want to learn about watersheds. Overall, this magazine is our project and we hope you enjoy our work!
