rovince of South Sumatra with its capital of palembang has an area of 99,888,28 km2. It lies in the western part of Sumatra Island and situated in the south of the equator at the 10-40째 South latitude and 102-108째 east longitude. The mainland part of the province borders on the province of Jambi in the north and Lampung Province in the South, the Province of Bengkulu in the west and the Island of Bangka and Belitung in the east. South Sumatra is also known as Sriwijaya Land Because this region, in 712 AD, was the center of the largest and most powerful maritime kingdom in Indonesia that had an influence on the regions covering those up to the Formosa and China in Asia and Madagascar in Africa. In addition, South Sumatra is often referred to as Nine Batanghari Region because in this region there are 9 major rivers which are navigable as far upstream,namely : Musi River, Ogan, Komering, Lematang, Kelingi, Rawas, Batanghari Leko and tens of their branches.
