Fall Greetings! Welcome to the Fall edition of the link, where we provide you with information about the fantastic services, programs and resources available to you at HPL. The holiday season is fast approaching, and for many of us that means travel, whether it is to visit family or just for fun. If your travels are taking you out of the country, HPL is here to help you get, or renew, your passport! And, we have added two more locations to make it more convenient for you. For more information, please see the box to the right. If you are staying in town, I hope you will join us for the great programs and events we have coming up. In the events section, on pages 2 and 3, you will find information about appearances by two authors, the Houston History Book Fair and Symposium, and the City’s annual Citizenship Week activities. Please join us for those that fit your interests and schedule.

Cecilia, a recent winner of our quarterly Super Star award, tells us why she wanted to be a librarian and how her works helps HPL serve you better every day. Join us and author, Judge Vanessa Gilmore as she discusses her current book, Saving the Dream. ABOUT THE BOOK: Erica Jackson was a 15-year-old high school student when she discovered she was pregnant. Alexa Pierce was a thirty year old pediatrician when she learned that fertility issues would not allow her to conceive. Erica’s decision to have her baby and raise it, or alternatively, to give the baby up for adoption is the foundation for this two-part story of hope and discovery.
Saving the Dream by author and judge, Vanessa D. Gilmore, will give women and families hope and inspiration. As this book travels alternately between the two worlds that might have been, it reveals wonderful insights and lessons about adoption, parenting, and the choices that families make. Gilmore hopes that her story will encourage other families and single people to pursue their own dreams of parenting by considering adoption. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Judge, author, mother are just some of the ways to describe this renaissance woman. After a first career as a fashion buyer, Vanessa Gilmore decided to undertake a career in law after representing herself and winning a minor civil lawsuit. In 1994 when she was sworn in, she was then the youngest sitting federal judge in the nation.
HOUSTON HISTORY BOOK FAIR & SYMPOSIUM
Motivated in part by her own experiences and those of other women and families who struggle with work/life integration, she decided to write about adoption in Saving the Dream. Gilmore is also the author of You Can’t Make This Stuff Up: Tales From a Judicial Diva, a humorous autobiographical look at her life on and off the bench and A Boy Named Rocky, a book for the children of incarcerated parents. Judge Gilmore is a frequent speaker and lecturer on issues related to these children and their families. This event is free and open to the public. The Tuskegee Airmen: The Segregated Skies of World War II September 15, 2012- January 5, 2013
The African American Library at the Gregory School | 1300 Victor St., 77019 832-393-1440 Who were the Tuskegee Airmen? The Tuskegee Airmen were the first AfricanAmerican military aviators in the United States armed forces. They became known as the “Tuskegee Airmen” because many of the them received their primary, basic, and advanced pilot training in the city of Tuskegee, Alabama. During World War II, African Americans in many U.S. states were still subject to racism and segregation. Much of the federal government, including the American military, was also racially segregated and the Tuskegee Airmen were subjected to racial discrimination, both within and outside the army. They trained in overcrowded classrooms, airstrips, and with old equipment. Despite these hardships they trained, flew with distinction and proved to be world class pilots. The Airmen flew escort missions and proved that African Americans could fight and protect as well as any other U.S. pilot or soldier. From these missions the men earned the nickname “Red Tail Angels” since the bombers considered their escorts “angels” and the red paint on the propeller and tail of their planes. In part because of the Tuskegee Airmen’s success, President Truman integrated the armed forces in 1948. The Tuskegee Airmen: The Segregated Skies of World War II is a traveling exhibit that provides an overview of the challenges and triumphs of the Tuskegee Airmen. The exhibition was created by The Museum of History and Holocaust Education at Kennesaw State University. This free exhibit is on view September 15, 2012 through January 5, 2013.
Rice Institute: Planning, Constructing, Opening, and the First Ten Years September 29, 2012- December 18, 2012
Houston Public Library | Julia Ideson Building | 550 McKinney, 77002 832-393-1662 “Houston now boasts one of the greatest foundations ever established in the history of the world, one that is to endure for all time and expand with the ages. It is to the welfare of this generation and all others to follow to which the Rice Institute and all its works are forever dedicated. It will give to the Houston of the future thousands of men and women of greater culture, broader vision, steadier ideals, swifter and keener judgments, greater efficiency and truer conceptions of duty and life than this generation can boast.” With this statement, from an October issue of the Houston Post in 1912, rings the bell for the newly opened Rice Institute. Rice Institute, later renamed Rice University, has maintained its reputation as one of the most highly accredited institutions in the country since its opening one hundred years ago this year. In collaboration with Rice University and in celebration of its centennial, this exhibition will reflect on the processes put into the institution being founded and the first ten years of educating. The exhibition is generously supported by Rice University, City of Houston and Houston Public Library. This free exhibit is on view September 29, 2012 through November 17, 2012. FOCUS ON…Cecilia Williams Cecilia Williams is a librarian in HPL’s Library Materials Services division, which is the group responsible for selecting, purchasing and making available all of the books, movies and other items you love to use. Dr. Rhea Brown Lawson, director of Houston Public Library, recently recognized Cecilia as an “HPL Super Star” for her efforts to increase the efficiency of our work at HPL. Here is a little more about Cecilia:
What made you want to be a librarian?
I’ve wanted to be a librarian since I was five years old and first visited a public library. I remember seeing shelves and shelves of books for the first time in my life and I was so happy I cried. Since then I’ve always wanted to see other kids and adults enjoy the library that much.
What do you like most about the library?
I love browsing the graphic novel and manga collection and finding something new to read. I also enjoy touring the art exhibits featured at the Central Library.
How does your job make the library better?
A cataloger’s job is to make sure people can find the item they want in the library. I know I’ve done my job well when someone can find that perfect item that they’ve been searching for and ten more items that they didn’t even know that they wanted. I’ve also been lucky enough to work on the Houston Area Digital Archives, which provides access to thousands of unique, historical items. Making these one-of-a-kind items digitally available to a wide audience is one of the most rewarding parts of my job.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Most weekends I’m busy renovating my house, playing with my dog, and baking more cookies than my family can eat.
What are you reading?
I’m in the middle of the Dengeki Daisy series by Kyousuke Motomi and 11/22/63 by Stephen King. I like to try a lot of different genres, and although I have a list of books I’d like to read sometime in my life, when I need something new to read I just pick a genre that matches my mood and go for it. Reading links you to the world and it becomes your oyster as they say.
