Americans have recognized African American history annually since 1926, first as “Negro History Week” and later as “Black History Month.” We owe the celebration of African American History Month to Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Born to parents who were former slaves, Dr. Woodson conceived the idea of “Negro History Week” while studying at Harvard after noting that history books largely ignored the African American population. Each year HPL presents excellent programs, author visits, special activities, featured collections and exhibits in celebration of African American History Month. This year we are thrilled to be partnering with our friends at the Ensemble Theatre and Flying Geese Productions to present the resurrections of Harriet Tubman and Rosa Parks, The Meeting between Malcolm X and Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., and, The Right to Dream, which recreates the coming of age of students in the South during the civil rights struggles of the 1950s and 1960s. Please see pages 4 and 5 for more information on these and other interesting events and programs. African American History Month is a perfect time to explore the exhibits and resources of the African American Library at the Gregory School to learn about the history of African Americans in Houston. You can also visit the Clayton Library Center for Genealogical Research to trace your family history. Both locations have special programs planned this month. February is also “National Library Lovers’ Month.” Everyone has a library story – please share yours with us. Inside this edition, we reveal the winners of our first annual Lift Off Houston Business Plan Competition. As usual, there are so many wonderful and exciting things happening at HPL. Houston Announces Business Plan Competition Winners
PledgeCents Emerges as Grand Prize Winner, $15,000 Award Houston-based startup PledgeCents emerged as the first Grand Prize winner in the City of Houston’s inaugural “Liftoff Houston!” Business Plan Competition. Ricky Johnson and Andyshea Saberioon won First Place with their business plan for PledgeCents, an online crowdfunding platform for fundraising for grade schools. They were awarded a $15,000 cash prize, a one-year subscription to the Houston Business Journal, a one-year membership to the chamber of commerce of their choice, and legal services from Texas BizCo. The Second and Third Place Winners were: SECOND PLACE: Monica Luna and Kimberly Levicky won Second Place with their business plan for ProveFIT, a gamification-based, customizable software platform created for physical fitness and health-focused businesses. They were awarded a $10,000 cash prize, a one-year subscription to the Houston Business Journal, a one-year membership to the chamber of commerce of their choice, and legal services from Texas BizCo. THIRD PLACE: Shirley Astwood won Third Place with her business plan for Greenbagger Stands, which provides reusable green bags dispenser solution for retailers. She was awarded a $5,000 cash prize, a one-year subscription to the Houston Business Journal, a one-year membership to the chamber of commerce of her choice, and legal services from Texas BizCo. The other three finalists were: Marisol Del Sol-Auten was a finalist with her business plan for Solutions Property Investment & Management, a real estate consulting firm offering professional consultancy to first-time buyers of income-producing properties. As a finalist she received a iPad mini, a one-year subscription to the Houston Business Journal, and a one-year membership to the chamber of commerce of her choice.

As finalists their team received a iPad mini, a one-year subscription to the Houston Business Journal, and a one-year membership to the chamber of commerce of her choice. Sarah Wakefield was a finalist with her business plan for Blitz Training and Performance Solutions, a training and consulting company specializing in social media, mobile technology and other electronic platforms. As a finalist she received a iPad mini, a one-year subscription to the Houston Business Journal, and a one-year membership to the chamber of commerce of her choice. Sponsored by Capital One Bank and in partnership with the Houston Public Library (HPL) and the Office of Business Opportunity (OBO), the “Liftoff Houston!� Business Plan Competition was created to engage and empower Houstonians seeking to start a new business in Houston by providing them with access to essential information, resources and support necessary to develop a sound business plan as a first step toward realizing this goal. First, Second, and Third Prize Winners were selected from among the six finalists during a final pitch presentation in December 2013. This performance focuses on the struggle of some of the most iconic figures from the Civil Rights era, who are engaged in opening doors of opportunity for everyone. We follow four young people as they share their dreams in this riveting performance featuring music and dance from the 60’s. Doors on stage symbolize equality, justice, education, and jobs. The story of the Civil Rights era in America surrounds itself with a lady who refused to get up from her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama city bus one day after work. She was arrested and taken to jail that day, December 1, 1955 and this sparked a bus boycott that spread throughout the nation. Come and hear the true story of what happened that day when Mrs. Rosa Parks stood her ground for her rights. This one-woman interactive portrayal will dispel some of the myths behind this story and explore the many social and political conditions of what happened during the 1960s in America. The Resurrection of Harriet Tubman in Escape to Freedom
This phenomenal and interactive, one-woman show depicts the life and times of one of the most recognized Conductors of the historical Underground Railroad. She is known to have guided hundreds of enslaved people to the North to freedom in Canada, especially after the 1850 Fugitive Slave Act. Come and hear her words and her message to the next generations, as well as to the youth of today. Written and directed by Professional Actor, Historical Re-enactor, Living History Performer, Author and Soloist, Melissa Waddy-Thibodeaux of Houston, Texas. Look for the reference book, Places of the Underground Railroad: A Geographical Guide (Greenwood Press) which was co-written by Ms. Waddy-Thibodeaux, in your local Houston Public Library. Born Joseph Louis Barrow on May 13, 1914 in Alabama, the son of a sharecropper, and the great-grandson of a slave, Louis went on to be widely considered one of the greatest and most beloved boxers in the sport’s history. When Camelot Came to Houston John F. Kennedy and the League of United Latin American Citizens
November 23, 2013 - March 1, 2014 Julia Ideson Building 550 McKinney, Houston, TX 77002 On November 21,1963, President John F. Kennedy attended a reception in Houston, Texas sponsored by the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC). That night is widely recognized as the first time a US president acknowledged Latinos as a significant voting bloc. John J. Herrera, Houston lawyer and past LULAC president, tried to revitalize the Viva Kennedy club movement when he invited Kennedy to the LULAC State Director’s Ball at the Rice Hotel in Houston on November 21, 1963. The President was scheduled to be in Houston for a testimonial dinner for a Harris County legislator. Kennedy accepted the LULAC invitation over a thousand others. President Kennedy, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, Vice President Lyndon Baines Johnson and Lady Bird Johnson spent seventeen minutes with the LULAC. Following a speech made by her husband praising the efforts of LULAC, Jackie Kennedy thrilled the crowd by speaking in Spanish. A mariachi band proceeded to serenade the presidential party. Just fifteen hours after his historic visit in Houston, President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. He spent his last night with a group of Mexican American civil rights activists. Those seventeen minutes at the Rice Hotel live on as a key historical moment for LULAC and Mexican Americans. This exhibition is generously supported by League of United Latin American Citizens Council 60, Houston Metropolitan Research Center, Houston Public Library and City of Houston. You Are Golden is a collection of illustrations, life drawings, portraits, sequential art, and urban landscape paintings, all encompassing particular experiences of the artist’s life that are held dearly to him. Ash H.G’s body of work includes people, places, and comic book pages, all thriving upon experiences within his life that have effected him deeply. This exhibit showcases the particulars of such places and people.
About the Artist
Originally from Ypsilanti, Michigan, Ash H.G. is a cartoonist, illustrator, painter, and writer. He has an Associate’s Degree in Visual Arts from Skagit Valley College and a Certification in Publishing Arts from Seattle Central Community College. He is the creator, writer, and artist of the comic book Children of the Black Circus which garnered him a small following and attention from some of the top talent in American comic books. His paintings and drawings have been exhibited in Washington state at the Skagit Valley College Art Gallery. He currently lives in Houston, TX where he is working on The Children of the Black Circus graphic novel.
