Happy New Year! A new year is here, and HPL kicks it off with programs, print and digital resources, and services for the entire family! This edition of the link is full of reading recommendations for all ages and interests. And if you are one of the many making the move to ereaders, check out the Tech IT section on page 4, where you can find information on the most popular downloads available through HPL . February is African American History Month, and we have an amazing schedule of programs. These include visits from Lauren Anderson, the first African American principal dancer with the Houston Ballet; Floyd Cooper, award-winning children’s book illustrator; and nationally acclaimed author Daniel Black. For more information about these and our many other African American History Month programs, please see pages 6 and 7. In this edition we also introduce you to one of our customers, Gonzo247. Gonzo247 is one of the artists who designed and painted the 20,000 square foot mural on the walls of the Central Library parking garage. His incredible talent and skill turned a drab and dreary parking area into a vibrant and welcoming space that reflects HPL’s desire to be your link to the world. Please see the Focus On section on page 2 to learn more about how the library helped shape this young artist’s career. Thanks always for your support of the Houston Public Library. We look forward to serving you soon!

HPL NEWS

FOCUS ON…Gonzo247, Urban Graffiti Artist The Central Library Urban Art Project is a dynamic spray-paint based mural on the walls of the Jesse H. Jones parking garage. Gonzo247 (pictured left) is one of the artists instrumental in the design and execution of this 20,000 square foot graffiti art project.

Gonzo247 chose his artistic graffiti name in 1984, when he started in the urban style of art. During the 80’s in Houston there wasn’t a lot of urban style art or information about it, so he decided that he was going to have to figure out on his own how to pursue his goal of being an urban artist. In his search for information he realized that he could go to the Library (which he thought to be a crazy concept but did it anyway). Gonzo recalls visiting the Library, where he found a book called The Faith of Graffiti by Norman Mailer. At the time, he didn’t know who Mailer was and that he had won a Pulitzer Prize, but he felt the book was written for him and about him. Gonzo says, “This was the first book that came out that had an intellectual view of the art, and I identified with it. I also memorized it cover to cover. If anyone is into graffiti, I highly recommend this book.” At the Library, he also discovered more than books, he found art magazines and periodicals that helped him develop his craft. “The Library for me was the key element in finding the information that was vital for me. I recommend that kids start researching whatever they are interested in at the library because there are so many books and other materials that can help them. There’s got to be at least one book that can change their life. A book that can give them that spark to push them in the right direction to achieve their goals. I never thought that a book would change my entire life but it did,” stated Gonzo. Gonzo’s favorite books are Subway Art by Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant, Spraycan Art by Henry Chalfant and James Prigoff, and History of American Graffiti by Roger Gastman and Caleb Neelsen. The artistic graffiti design at the Central Library’s parking garage was a collaborative effort by Gonzo247, Carolyn Casey of CKC Start, Merg360, and Dr. Rhea Brown Lawson, Director of the Houston Public Library. The splatters of color and design of the world continents including images of people from those areas represents HPL’s theme of “Linking You to the World.” The Central Library is located at 500 McKinney, 77002, 832-393-1313. To find out more about HPL visit www.houstonlibrary.org.

Pictured above: Best-selling children’s author Eric Litwin, Heather Kendall and her daughter Reagan. Heather and Reagan are the great-great-granddaughter and great-great-great-granddaughter of Belle Sherman Kendall, for whom the Kendall Neighborhood Library is named.

A Visit with “Pete the Cat” Author Eric Litwin Kids of all ages were delighted and entertained by bestselling children’s author Eric Litwin in a program to kick off the Houston Public Library’s (HPL) inaugural Season’s Readings series. The special musical storytime performance was held at the Kendall Neighborhood Library as well as the Central Library, giving customers a chance to meet the author and have him sign copies of his illustrated books. Litwin is a guitar strumming, book writing, harmonica blowing, banjo picking, song singing, and five time national award winning, folksy fun type of guy. He is a #1 New York Times bestselling author of Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes. He is also a popular performing artist who plays interactive music, tells musical stories and brings books to life. Kids and parents alike sang and danced along to the well-known songs and were treated to a sneak peak of several unpublished stories. This program was supported by a grant from the Houston Public Library Foundation. For more information about upcoming programs, please see www.houstonlibrary.org.

Programs for adults

Saturday, February 11 | 2 PM Central Library | 500 McKinney, 77002 At the end of the 1960’s, numerous Swedish journalists came to the US, drawn by stories of urban unrest and revolution. Filming for close to a decade, they gained access to many of the leaders of the Black Power movement – Stokely Carmichael, Bobby Seale, Angela Davis, and Eldridge Cleaver among them – capturing them in intimate moments and remarkably unguarded interviews. Thirty years later, this lush collection of 16mm film, peppered with footage of Black Panther activities and B-roll images of black America, was found languishing in the basement of Swedish Television. Director Göran Olsson and co-producer Danny Glover bring this mesmerizing footage to light. These programs are supported by a grant from the Houston Public Library Foundation.

HPL EXHIBITS

Theater of Memory, Cabinet of Curiosities: Treasures from the Houston Metropolitan Research Center Julia Ideson Building - 500 McKinney, Houston, TX 77002

Theater of Memory Cabinet of Curiosities

In the spring of 2010, the state of the art archival wing of the Julia Ideson Building was completed and became the new home to the Houston Metropolitan Research Center’s collections. It was the first step in the expansion and restoration of this architectural jewel, which first opened in 1926. With the premier exhibition, Theater of Memory, Cabinet of Curiosities, the Houston Metropolitan Research Center brings some of its unique artifacts back into the Julia Ideson Building’s new gallery space, once three floors of the original archives, giving to the term “memory room” a double meaning. The Houston Public Library extends an invitation to view the gifts and accomplishments of those who came before and to celebrate the opportunities awaiting future scholars, collectors, donors and connoisseurs of Houston’s history. This exhibit is free and open to the public. For more information, please visit: www.houstonlibrary.org/events and www.houstonlibrary.org/jib. On View December 5, 2011 - May 5, 2012 Julia Ideson Building Home of the Houston Metropolitan Research Center 500 McKinney, Houston, TX 77002

Down In Houston: Documenting a Blues Community The African American Library at the Gregory School | 1300 Victor St., 77019

In the clubs, ballrooms, and barbecue joints of neighborhoods such as Third Ward, Frenchtown, Sunnyside, and Double Bayou, Houston’s African American community birthed a vibrant and unique slice of the blues. Ranging from the down-home sounds of Lightnin’ Hopkins to the more refined orchestrations of the Duke-Peacock recording empire and beyond, Houston blues was and is the voice of a working-class community, an ongoing conversation about good times and hard times, smokin’ Saturday nights and Blue Mondays. In collaboration with the Society for the Performing Arts Houston, The African American Library at the Gregory School will exhibit photographs featured from the book, Down In Houston, and programming the entire month of February to celebrate Houston’s impact on the wider American blues scene.
