VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC vs HOUSTON DYNAMO EMPIRE FIELD, Vancouver, B.C. 4 p.m. PT (TSN2; KHOU/Azteca)

August 27, 2011 (WEEK 24; MLS Game 237)

Vancouver Whitecaps FC and the Houston Dynamo meet for the second time this season when the clubs face off Saturday afternoon at Empire Field. Whitecaps FC return home after a 2-1 loss at fellow expansion side Portland last weekend. The Dynamo extended their unbeaten streak in dramatic fashion last weekend, a last-gasp 3-2 win against Real Salt Lake at home. REFEREE: Niko Bratsis. The Dynamo took the lead in the 37th minute when Cam Weaver pounced on a Brad Davis corner kick that Bobby Boswell had flicked on.  Whitecaps FC pulled even barely a minute later. Winger Davide Chiumiento slipped a ball through to Camilo after spinning away from the Dynamo defense. The Brazilian striker put a point blank shot over Houston goalkeeper Tally Hall’s right shoulder.  Boswell restored the Dynamo margin in the 42nd minute. After a corner kick was cleared, Danny Cruz's cross found the center back behind the pulled-up Vancouver back line and he knocked a shot past ‘keeper Jay Nolly.  Houston finished off the match in the the 76th minute. Rookie Will Bruin beat Nolly to a through ball as the 'keeper raced off his line, skipping around him and sliding the ball into the back of the net for his first professional goal.  HOUSTON DYNAMO (4-1-3-2): Tally Hall - Hunter Freeman, Bobby Boswell, Andre Hainault, Corey Ashe Lovel Palmer - Danny Cruz, Geoff Cameron, Brad Davis (Colin Clark 92+) - Cam Weaver (Jason Garey 84), Will Bruin.  VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC (4-4-2): Jay Nolly - Jonathan Leathers, Michael Boxall, Jay DeMerit (Russell Teibert 46), Blake Wagner - Davide Chiumiento, Jeb Brovsky, Alain Rochat, Nizar Khalfan (Mouloud Akloul 79) - Atiba Harris, Camilo (Omar Salgado 84) VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC Vancouver Whitecaps FC suffered a second consecutive loss on the road, falling 2-1 to the Portland Timbers in the first meeting of the expansion teams, Saturday evening at Jeld-Wen Field. Whitecaps FC have 18 points from 25 matches, sitting in ninth place in the Western Conference. LAST MATCH  The Timbers opened the scoring with the earliest goal in their MLS history. From a turnover in midfield, Jack Jewsbury played forward to Jorge Perlaza, who then slipped it to Diego Chara in the area. He then fired a shot into the top corner of the goal past a diving Joe Cannon.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

Portland then doubled their lead just after the half-hour. A Jewsbury free kick found defender Mamadou Danso in the area. His header deflected off a Vancouver defender -- but fell perfectly for Perlaza, who chipped home neatly from the spot.  Whitecaps FC pulled a goal back in the 88th minute on a wonderful effort from Camilo. Receiving a pass from Jordan Harvey in the area, he cut back away from his marker and curled a sublime right-footed shot inside the far right post.  Whitecaps FC head coach Tom Soehn made two changes to the team that lost 4-0 to D.C. United at RFK Stadium. Jeb Brovsky came in at fullback for Jonathan Leathers, and Davide Chiumiento came into the midfield for Shea Salinas.  VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC (4-4-2): Joe Cannon - Jeb Brovsky, Jay DeMerit, Michael Boxall, Jordan Harvey - John Thorrington, Peter Vagenas (Mustapha Jarju 51), Gershon Koffie, Davide Chiumiento (Shea Salinas 63) - Eric Hassli (Omar Salgado 84), Camilo. TEAM NEWS  Whitecaps FC remain one of three teams winless away from home, with an 0-10-4 record away from Empire Field, along with Toronto FC (0-8-6) – and the Dynamo (0-4-8).  "The way we started out, giving a goal that early, so disappointing. We knew the first 15 [minutes] were going to be energetic from them, but we lost the first half in that regard so much as competing,” said Whitecaps FC head coach Tom Soehn. “Second half we did a much better job but ultimately the stat that counts is the 2-1."  Three teams in MLS history have finished the season without a road win: the 2003 LA Galaxy (0-9-6), New York in 2009 (0-13-2), and expansion Real Salt Lake in 2005 (0-14-2).  "On the road it's always difficult, we still generated a lot of set pieces but we also talked about on both sides of set pieces we have to be aggressive,” Soehn said. “Whatever corners we had, we have to get on the end of them I don't think we were very dangerous and those are quality opportunities that we're passing up."  Camilo scored a third goal in the last six games for Whitecaps FC in the 2-1 loss at Portland; with eight, he is two behind team leader Eric Hassli, who is tied for third in the MLS Golden Boot standings.  For the second time in five games, rookie Jeb Brovsky played right back. The 19th overall selection in the 2011 SuperDraft out of Notre Dame, who had figured primarily as a midfielder, first started in the back line July 20 vs. San Jose.  “I think it’s a work in progress — there’s no excuse if I make a mistake, but I obviously need to learn the role quicker than most,” Brovsky said. “Some people grow up in that position, but I have full confidence in my tactical ability that I can learn it.”  With two games remaining in the Cascadia Cup – both at home – Whitecaps FC are in third place with one point from two games. Seattle Sounders FC lead with five points from three games; the Timbers now have four points from three games.  "That was obviously one of our goals that we set out at the beginning of the season and it's still very much alive. We've got the Cascadia Cup at home so it's in our hands and we've got to pick ourselves up for it," said defender Michael Boxall. HOUSTON DYNAMO The Houston Dynamo again provided late drama in extending their unbeaten streak to five games, scoring the gamewinner in stoppage time in a 3-2 defeat of Real Salt Lake on Saturday evening at Robertson Stadium. The Dynamo have 35 points from 26 games on the season, moving into third place in the Eastern Conference. LAST MATCH  Real opened the scoring in the 28th minute. Fabian Espíndola latched on to a deflected pass and beat Houston goalkeeper Tally Hall to the far post with an angled shot from the right side of the area.  But the home side pulled even two minutes after the second-half restart. Carlo Costly laid a deft pass off to Davis at the top of the box, who fought through two defenders to square a ball to the Brian Ching, who then poked a shot out of goalkeeper Nick Rimando’s reach.  Yet on the hour, RSL again nosed in front. Luis Gil split defenders Hunter Freeman and Bobby Boswell to latch onto an Espíndola cross from the right flank and head home.  The Dynamo again evened terms nine minutes later. Brad Davis found Bobby Boswell at the near post on a corner kick, and the center back floated a curling header that landed inside the far-side netting.  Then in stoppage time, a cross was cleared out only as far as Alex Dixon on the right. He corralled the ball and cut onto his left foot, unleasing a sterling strike that sailed past Rimando's despairing dive inside the far post.  Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear made three changes to the team that came back for a late 1-1 draw with the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium. Corey Ashe came in at fullback for Jermaine Taylor, Colin Clark started in place of the suspended Adam Moffat, and Carlo Costly started up top for Cam Weaver.  HOUSTON DYNAMO (4-1-3-2): Tally Hall - Hunter Freeman, Andre Hainault, Bobby Boswell, Corey Ashe - JeVaughn Watson - Colin Clark (Alex Dixon 81), Geoff Cameron, Brad Davis - Brian Ching (Calen Carr 92+), Carlo Costly (Cam Weaver 84).

MLS GAME INFORMATION

TEAM NEWS  The Dynamo won for a third consecutive game at Robertson Stadium – and extended their unbeaten streak to five games – with the win against Real Salt Lake.  “I just think everyone’s playing better,” said head coach Dominic Kinnear. “At the beginning of the year, we were just treading water. We were going good but not busting through, but now everyone has upped their game. Plus they’re having fun. They’re undefeated in five and have only one loss in the last 10. I think anytime you get a point and play well, it gives you confidence — and the mistakes don’t bug them because that confidence is there.”  Home Grown Player Alex Dixon, who graduated from Atascocita H.S. in nearby Humble, Texas and was signed out of the University of North Carolina during preseason, scored his first professional goal in his seventh league appearance, all as a substitute.  “He is learning how to become a professional. It is only one goal, so we have to take it easy, but it certainly came at the right time, and it capped off a good week for us,” said Kinnear. “I’m happy for him. Sometimes the criticism from the older players and myself can be harsh and honest, but he kept his chin up, and I always tell him that we will give you a chance to play on the field because we have confidence that you can help this team at any particular time.”  Brad Davis extended his lead in the MLS assists race with a pair of helpers in the win against RSL. Now with 13 assists on the season, Davis has four assists in the last five games.  “We were moving the ball well. We found Brad a lot in the last half-an-hour,” said Brian Ching. “When Brad gets the ball, it’s always a dangerous situation. We had a lot of chances, as did they, and I thought Nick Rimando made a lot of good saves. The more times you try and put the ball in the box, it puts pressure on the defense, and you hope to get something out of it.”  Ching scored his fourth goal in his last five appearances, and has taken over the Dynamo lead with five goals. The Dynamo are undefeated in the 10 games Ching has started this year.  The Dynamo finally have midfielder Luiz Camargo available after receiving his P-1 visa. While the Dynamo midfield is particularly deep, the Brazilian, last with Paraná Clube, is ready to make his mark.  “I’m pretty sure this team has more than eight games left,” Camargo said. “I’m sure they’re going to qualify [for the playoffs] and I’m ready to help in this squad any way I can.”

WHITECAPS FC MATCH NOTES MATCH NOTES • •

This is the second ever match between Whitecaps FC and Houston Dynamo. Vancouver lost 3-1 in Houston on April 10. The Dynamo got goals from Cam Weaver, Bobby Boswell, and Will Bruin while Camilo replied for Whitecaps FC. The only previous time a team from Houston came to Vancouver was in the original North American Soccer League, as Houston Hurricane won 1-0 at the old Empire Stadium on this very ground, in front of 26,013 on June 2, 1979. It was the only other meeting between Vancouver and a Houston team. Since 1974, Vancouver have played 46 games against teams from Texas in MLS, NASL, USL-1, and USSF-2. Vancouver are 27W-15L-4D against Texas teams overall, and an impressive 20-3-2 at home.

Forward Camilo is suspended for this match due to yellow card accumulation. He has 9G 2A in competitive play, and also scored Vancouver's goal against Manchester City in the 2-1 loss on July 18. Camilo was named MLS Player of the Week for week three after scoring 2G 1A in the 3-3 draw with Sporting Kansas City, as he became the first player in MLS history to score twice in stoppage time. Forward and designated player #29 Eric Hassli is among the MLS scoring leaders, and leads Vancouver with 11G 1A in all competitions, including 4G 1A in his last five matches. His 85th minute goal at Seattle on June 4 is a clear candidate for MLS Goal of the Year, has over 5 million hits on YouTube, and was nominated for an ESPY for Best Play. At D.C. United on Aug. 13, defender and captain #6 Jay DeMerit made his first 'Caps appearance since missing six matches through injury. Earlier in the season he missed ten matches due to a groin injury suffered playing for the US national team . Forward #7 Mustapha Jarju rejoined the team in Washington, DC, after being called up to play for The Gambia in a 3-0 friendly win over Congo DR on August 10. Jarju has four goals in 26 international appearances, primarily as a midfielder. Jarju became Vancouver's second Designated Player on June 20, and got the start in his MLS debut on July 20 in the 2-2 draw at San Jose Earthquakes. Midfielder #16 Nizar Khalfan (Tanzania) and striker #7 Mustapha Jarju (The Gambia) have been called up by their respective countries for 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying next week. Neither will miss any Whitecaps FC league matches. They will join their respective national teams on Monday for matches on the Labour Day holiday weekend of September 3 and 4. Midfielder #28 Gershon Koffie turned 20 this past Thursday. Midfielder #27 Alexandre Morfaw turns 24 on Thursday. Defender #26 Jordan Harvey was acquired from Philadelphia Union on July 7 in exchange for allocation money. Midfielder #11 John Thorrington made his 50th career MLS regular season start in the 4-2 home win over Chicago Fire on August 7 . It was his first start for Whitecaps FC, as he struggled much of this season with a calf injury. Midfielder #20 Davide Chiumiento has been among the MLS assist leaders all season. He has 1G 8A in 20GP in MLS. Striker Atiba Harris underwent a successful meniscectomy to his right knee on Friday, August 12. Earlier this season, on April 26, Harris underwent meniscal repair surgery to his right knee. Forward #23 Long Tan became the first Chinese-born to play in MLS when he subbed in at 88' in Philadelphia on March 26.

HOUSTON NOTES • •

• • • • • • • •

The Dynamo won the MLS Cup in their first two seasons of play in 2006 and 2007. Defender #2 Eddie Robinson scored against Whitecaps FC in a Sept 1, 2003, exhibition match playing for San Jose Earthquakes as they defeated the 'Caps 4-3 at Vancouver's Swangard Stadium. He and Vancouver goalkeeper Joe Cannon were teammates with San Jose Earthquakes in 2001 and 2002. Forward #15 Cam Weaver faced Whitecaps FC in 2006 in three league and one preseason match while playing for Seattle Sounders in USL-1. Weaver scored twice for Seattle in a 2-2 draw in Vancouver on May 26, 2006. Defender #31 Andre Hainault is a Canadian international, from Montreal, Quebec, and played with Montreal Impact against Vancouver in 2004 and 2005. Forward #25 Brian Ching played against Vancouver while with Seattle Sounders in 2001 and 2002, and also in exhibition play while with San Jose Earthquakes. Defender #8 Kofi Sarkodie and Vancouver's Michael Nanchoff were teammates with the University of Akron Zips from 2008 to 2010. Whitecaps assistant coach Denis Hamlett coached forward #3 Calen Carr from 2006 to 2009 at Chicago Fire. Midfielder #16 Adam Moffat played under Whitecaps FC 2012 head coach designate Martin Rennie with Cleveland City Stars in 2007. The Empire Field temporary stadium was constructed in just 111 days by Nussli Special Events (Canada) using a modular design developed in Switzerland and it officially opened on June 15, 2010. Houston Dynamo at Vancouver Whitecaps Saturday, 27 August 2011 – 6 p.m. CT MLS regular season Empire Field, Vancouver BC Broadcast Information TV: KHOU 11.2 Radio: SportsTalk 790, La Ranchera 850

Dynamo Media Contacts (@HoustonDynamo.com) Lester Gretsch (lgretsch@ 832-633-0632) Jonathan Yardley (jyardley@ 713-876-4500) Jonathan Kaplan (jkaplan@ 516-965-4664)

DYNAMO AT VANCOUVER The Houston Dynamo will try to extend a five-game unbeaten streak and get their first road win of the season on Saturday when they take on the Vancouver Whitecaps. Houston beat Vancouver 3-1 on April 10 in the teams’ first all-time meeting.

DYNAMO NOTES 

Houston’s dramatic 3-2 win over Real Salt Lake last Saturday was its second consecutive come-frombehind result and the ninth time this season the Dynamo have rallied to win or tie. Alex Dixon’s dramatic game-winning goal was Houston’s seventh game-winning or game-tying goal that was scored in the final seven minutes. The victory was the first time Houston has rallied to win after facing a halftime deficit.

The Dynamo are unbeaten in the last five games (3-0-2) and have lost just once in their last 10 (4-1-5). Houston’s longest unbeaten streak of the season is six games (3-0-3), from March 25-April 29. The club record for MLS unbeaten streak is 11 games, set from April 11-June 20, 2009.

Houston midfielder Brad Davis currently leads Major League Soccer with 13 assists after notching a pair against Salt Lake for his fourth multi-assist game of the season. After posting 12 assists in league play in each of the last two seasons, Davis has set a new career high this year, doing so in the first 26 games of the extended schedule. Davis is so influential that, according to MLS stats partner Opta, he has created a league-high 84 scoring opportunities, a full 33 ahead of his nearest competitor.

Dynamo captain Brian Ching has taken over the team lead in scoring with five goals, passing the quartet of Bobby Boswell, Will Bruin, Geoff Cameron, and Cam Weaver, each with four. Ching’s goals have come in only 881 minutes (the others each have played more than 1,300), and the Dynamo are unbeaten in their last 12 games (5-0-7) when Ching starts.

Defender Bobby Boswell has scored in consecutive games, notching a dramatic tying goal against New England on August 17 and tying the game 2-2 with a header against Real Salt Lake. Boswell has scored four goals on the season, surpassing his previous career high of three, set in his rookie season of 2005. Three of Boswell’s four goals have tied the match.

Houston has scored first in nine out of 26 games on the season; the Dynamo are 6-1-2 when notching the first goal and 2-6-7 when the opponent scores first; there have been two 0-0 ties.

Midfielder Luiz Camargo, whose signing was announced on August 9, joined the Dynamo last Sunday and is expected to be available for selection against Vancouver on Saturday.

RE-WRITING THE RECORD BOOKS Brad Davis is playing his way to the top of the Dynamo record books. Davis is the all-time club leader in games played in all competitions (189) and MLS (151); games started in all competitions (171) and MLS (137); and assists in all competitions (68) and MLS (59). Davis also ranks third in team history in minutes in all competitions, goals in all competitions (22), and MLS goals (20).

ALWAYS THERE Goalkeeper Tally Hall is the only Houston player to contest all 2,340 minutes of the MLS regular season so far. Hall and midfielder Brad Davis are the only players to start each MLS game.

MISSING IN ACTION The Dynamo will be without forward Will Bruin (knee surgery) and midfielder Danny Cruz (quad) for Saturday’s match.

RESERVES RETURN TO ACTION WITH WIN The Houston Dynamo Reserves improved to 4-2 in MLS Reserve League play with a 1-0 win over Real Salt Lake on Sunday. Jason Garey scored the only goal of the game, his third reserve goal of the season, with assists from Adam Moffat and Kofi Sarkodie. Goalkeeper Tyler Deric made two saves to record his fourth shutout. The Dynamo Reserves return to action on Thursday, September 1, playing at the Colorado Rapids.

UP NEXT: BORDER RIVALRY RENEWED Like most of Major League Soccer, the Dynamo will take next weekend off from league play for a FIFA international fixture date, but Houston will still be hosting a first-class match on Sunday, September 4. The Dynamo will take on Mexican power Monterrey, the 2010-11 CONCACAF Champions League winner and the champion in two of the last four Mexican tournaments. Houston and Monterrey have met once before, in the 2009 Dynamo Charities Cup, with the Dynamo taking a 2-1 win. Following that match, the Dynamo will return to league play with road games at Kansas City (Sept. 10) and at Columbus (Sept. 14).

NEW BLOOD Of the Dynamo’s 26 players on the roster, 14 are new to the orange in 2011. Houston acquired three players via draft (Kofi Sarkodie, Will Bruin, Evan Newton), four via trade (Colin Clark, Jason Garey, Calen Carr, Adam Moffat), five via international signings (Hunter Freeman, Jermaine Taylor, Je-Vaughn Watson, Carlo Costly, Luiz Camargo), and two via the Dynamo Academy (Alex Dixon, Josue Soto).

LOCAL FLAVOR Almost one-third of the Dynamo’s current roster has close ties to Texas. Six players are native Texans (Bobby Boswell, Tyler Deric, Alex Dixon, Hunter Freeman, Francisco Navas Cobo, Josue Soto), Colin Clark attended SMU in Dallas, and Jason Garey (Gonzales, La.) has a sister, Melissa, who was a standout player at Texas A&M University in College Station.
