HOUSTON DYNAMO vs LA GALAXY ROBERTSON STADIUM, Houston, Texas 6 p.m. CT (Galavisión; FS-W)

October 23, 2011 (WEEK 32; MLS Game 306)

By the time the final game of the 2011 regular season kicks off at The Home Depot Center, the Houston Dynamo will know what they must do against the LA Galaxy. The Dynamo can finish anywhere from first in the Eastern Conference to ninth place overall, and they will know what result they must get to play host to a wild card game – or avoid it entirely. The Galaxy are aiming for the most points ever tallied by a club in a single MLS season, having won the Supporters’ Shield and sitting on 67 points with one game remaining, one short of the league record. REFEREE: Jorge Gonzalez. The Dynamo last won vs. LA on Oct.18, 2008, a 3-0 win.  The Dynamo haven’t defeated the Galaxy at The Home Depot Center since 2007, a 3-1 victory. The Galaxy have won three of the four league and MLS Cup meetings there since, including a 2-0 win in extra time in the 2009 Conference Championship.  Coaches record: Bruce Arena vs. HOU: P8 W5 L2 D1 … Dominic Kinnear v LA: P22 W8 L9 D5 LAST MEETING (MLS) 5/25: LA 1, HOU 0 (Donovan 46+ pen)  The game's lone goal came in first-half stoppage time. Houston midfielder Lovel Palmer stopped a shot by Chris Birchall with his arm, and referee Chris Penso awarded a penalty kick. Landon Donovan stepped up and easily converted the spot kick past Tally Hall for his league-leading eighth goal of the season.  It was the first shot on goal for the Galaxy in the match, who ended with two on the night. Donovan Ricketts was called upon to make just one save in the LA goal.  LA GALAXY (4-3-1-2): Donovan Ricketts - Sean Franklin, Omar Gonzalez, A.J. DeLaGarza, Todd Dunivant Chris Birchall (Jovan Kirovski 92+), Juninho, Michael Stephens - Landon Donovan - Juan Pablo Angel (Mike Magee 61), Chad Barrett (Miguel Lopez 74).  HOUSTON DYNAMO (4-4-2): Tally Hall - Hunter Freeman, Andre Hainault, Bobby Boswell, Corey Ashe (Mike Chabala 46) - Colin Clark, Lovel Palmer, Geoff Cameron, Brad Davis (Je-Vaughn Watson 61) - Will Bruin, Koke (Cam Weaver 74). HOUSTON DYNAMO The Houston Dynamo extended their unbeaten run to five games, defeating the Portland Timbers 2-0 on Friday evening at Jeld-Wen Field. The Dynamo have 46 points from 33 games on the season, in fourth place in the Eastern Conference to start the week. LAST MATCH  The Dynamo took the lead in the 36th minute. Winning a free kick outside the left corner of the penalty area, Brad Davis swung in his service toward the near post and defender Andre Hainault met it with a glancing header, nodding it past Portland goalkeeper Troy Perkins.  Houston doubled their lead in the 59th minute in spectacular fashion when Danny Cruz drove a left-footed blast from 30 yards out into the top corner of the goal.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear made two changes to the team that reached a 1-1 draw with the Chicago Fire at Robertson Stadium. Danny Cruz came into the midfield for Colin Clark, and Calen Carr started up top in place of Brian Ching.  HOUSTON DYNAMO (4-1-3-2): Tally Hall - Andre Hainault, Geoff Cameron, Bobby Boswell, Corey Ashe Adam Moffat - Danny Cruz, Luiz Camargo (Je-Vaughn Watson 77), Brad Davis (Colin Clark 74) - Calen Carr (Will Bruin 81), Carlo Costly. TEAM NEWS  The win in Portland did not clinch a playoff spot for the Dynamo, but after Sporting KC’s win against New York, the Columbus win in New England and Chicago’s last-gasp victory against D.C. United, Houston their place among the final 10.  “It feels great now that we’re into the playoffs, but it’s different,” Brad Davis said. “We’ll have to give everything we’ve got these next few weeks. ... It’s great we got in the playoffs, but now the next step is to win the MLS Cup, and if we play the way we did Friday, I think we can do some good things in the postseason.”  The Dynamo could enter the MLS Cup Playoffs anywhere from the top seed in the Eastern Conference and holding home-field advantage throughout the postseason, to 10th place overall and playing on the road in a midweek wild card game.  “We've definitely felt the playoff race. We've known for long that we need results to get in to the playoffs, so the guys have stepped up again,” said goalkeeper Tally Hall. “Hats off to the boys. I can't say anything else other than they've stepped up, they've done their job and put us in a great spot.”  The Dynamo have recorded back-to-back shutouts on the road for the first time since posting three successive clean sheets away from Robertson Stadium midway through the 2008 season.  "It's a huge result for us, hats off to the team – the defenders especially,” said Hall. “I felt like Portland put a lot of service into the box and whipped in good balls and I thought our team fought very well to keep good position.”  The back-to-back road wins, first against FC Dallas then in Portland, are the first since two straight away from home in June 2009.  “Now we’re not looking at ourselves and saying, ‘Oh, we’re a road team now,’” defender André Hainault said. “We’re taking it one at a time. We’ll need to build on this, because we’re on a high now after winning in a tough atmosphere against a good team.”  After missing seven games to injury, Danny Cruz made his fifth consecutive appearance and his second start in that time. He scored his second goal of the year, the first coming on July 9.  “It was a great goal tucked inside, I don't know how far out it was, but it was perfect and I'm happy for Danny it's definitely one of the good goals we've had this year,” said Kinnear. LA GALAXY The LA Galaxy once again held sway over their Home Depot Center neighbors, defeating Chivas USA on Sunday evening in the second SuperClásico of the season. The Galaxy have 67 points from 33 games on the season, leading the Western Conference and the MLS overall table. LAST MATCH  The game's lone goal came in the 53rd minute. Chad Barrett sent a header toward the right side of the penalty area where Adam Cristman took control and floated a ball back across the box, where Barrett raced onto the return pass and easily headed home from inside the six.  Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena made four changes to the team that fell 2-0 to the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena. Josh Saunders came back in between the posts in place of Donovan Ricketts, Gregg Berhalter started in the back four for Frankie Hejduk, Mike Magee came into the midfield for Michael Stephens, and Adam Cristman started up top in place of Miguel Lopez.  LA GALAXY (4-4-2): Josh Saunders - A.J. DeLaGarza, Omar Gonzalez, Gregg Berhalter, Todd Dunivant Paolo Cardozo, Juninho (Michael Stephens 61), David Beckham, Mike Magee - Adam Cristman (Chris Birchall 73), Chad Barrett (Jovan Kirovski 86). TEAM NEWS  The Galaxy finish the season as the third team in MLS history to go undefeated for the season on their home ground, along with Real Salt Lake last year (11-0-4) and the San Jose Earthquakes in 2005 (9-0-7).  “It’s nice,” Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena said. “I don’t really pay attention to those kinds of things. It’s certainly important. It was obviously the most important factor probably in winning the Supporters’ Shield. If you generate that many points at home and get a fair amount on the road, it’s a simple formula that adds up to being on top in the end.”  Over all competitions, the Galaxy are 16-0-5 in home games at The Home Depot Center this season, and have allowed just 10 goals in all in home contests.

The Galaxy now have an 18-game undefeated streak in league games at home dating to the end of last season, the third-longest in MLS history, behind 29 games for Real Salt Lake (2009-11) and 22 for the Columbus Crew (2008-09). With the victory, the Galaxy have 67 points on the season, the second-most in MLS history. The 1998 Galaxy won 24 games (by shootout) in amassing 68 points in a 32-game season. “It always means something against Chivas,” striker Chad Barrett said. “It’s a big thing. It’s a big thing to them, so we came in here, we weren’t lackadaisical. There’s still a record we could break with the points. There were tons of things to play for.” The Galaxy defeated their Home Depot Center neighbors for the sixth consecutive regular-season game, and in seven league games since the 2009 season, they’ve allowed just one goal to Chivas USA. “We’ve made [The Home Depot Center] our fortress and against Chivas, it means everything,” Galaxy defender Todd Dunivant said. “We pride ourselves on that Clasico game and showing that this is our stadium.” Chad Barrett made his third consecutive start in attack in league games and scored his third goal in the last four, after going three months between hitting the back of the net. “I think the goal was big for him,” said Arena. “He had a couple of chances in the first half. The play that just about opened the game and a couple of others but good to see him come back determined in the second half of the game and get that goal. It was obviously a big goal and it’s going to be a boost for his confidence.” Veteran defender Gregg Berhalter announced his retirement following the season in the days leading up to the game, and he made his first 90-minute performance since Aug. 20 while also wearing the captain’s armband. “He filled a void that we had, but I still wasn’t quite sure if he would embrace it the way he has,” Arena said. “He’s committed to be good and he worked hard every day. I think Gregg is a lot different than the typical American player. I think he’s fought for everything he’s gotten in the game. He went over to Europe at a young age and probably got beat up a little bit. Various clubs he’s been in he’s been in cut-throat environments. He’s been trained to be professional every day and compete every day.” On Thursday, the Galaxy qualified for the knockout stage of the CONCACAF Champions League with a 1-0 win against Motagua of Honduras in Tegucigalpa. Houston Dynamo vs. LA Galaxy Sunday, 23 October 2011 – 6 p.m. CT MLS regular season Robertson Stadium, Houston TX Broadcast Information TV: Galavision, FS Houston Plus Radio: KPRC 950, La Ranchera 850

DYNAMO VS. LA GALAXY The Houston Dynamo play their final regular season match at Robertson Stadium on Sunday night, hosting the LA Galaxy with a chance to improve Houston’s seeding in the 2011 MLS Cup Playoffs. Houston has clinched a spot but, entering the final weekend, could still finish first, second, or third in the Eastern Conference or eighth, ninth, or tenth in the overall playoff standings.

DYNAMO NOTES 

Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear has a chance to earn his 100th career MLS regular season win on Sunday. If he does so, Kinnear will become the fifth coach in league history to reach that milestone, joining Seattle coach Sigi Schmid (156), LA coach Bruce Arena (128), Bob Bradley (124), and Revolution head coach Steve Nicol (112). Kinnear has quality to go with his quantity: his .565 career winning percentage ranks fourth in league history.

Houston is 0-5-1 in its last six games against the Galaxy, with the Dynamo’s last win coming three years ago on October 18, 2008, when Houston clinched first place in the Western Conference. Since then, the Galaxy have outscored the Dynamo 10-1 in six games, including a controversial 2-0 extra-time win in the 2009 Western Conference championship game. The Galaxy lead the all-time series 8-4-4, including the playoff game and a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup semifinal win in 2006.

Since a 3-0 loss at Chivas USA on July 23, the Dynamo have been one of the top teams in MLS, posting a 6-2-4 record in their last 12 games to clinch a playoff spot. That stretch includes a 6-1 record against Western Conference teams; Houston is 8-5-4 on the season against its former conference.

Houston has scored in the final 11 minutes to win or tie a game on 10 separate occasions this season, including six times in the Dynamo’s last 11 games.

Brazilian midfielder Luiz Camargo has started the last five MLS games for the Dynamo, and the team has posted a 3-0-2 record in those contests. The insertion of Camargo has allowed Geoff Cameron to shift to center back and has, for the last four games, pushed Andre Hainault to right back. The Dynamo have allowed just two goals from open play in five games with Camargo in midfield.

Midfielder Brad Davis, a league MVP candidate, has notched 15 assists on the season, tied for the MLS lead with the Galaxy’s David Beckham. Davis continues to lead the league in chances created, both overall and from the run of play, according to MLS stats partner Opta.

DYNAMO NOTES (CTD.) 

With a 9-3-4 home record, the Dynamo currently rank fourth in MLS in home points per game (1.9375); a win would allow them to leapfrog Kansas City and would tie the club record for home regular season wins, set in 2008 with a 10-1-4 record.

Houston has scored first in 13 out of 33 games on the season; the Dynamo are 8-1-4 when notching the first goal and 3-8-7 when the opponent scores first; there have been two 0-0 ties. Houston’s 10 results when allowing the first goal are the most in MLS; the Dynamo’s winning percentage when allowing the first goal (.361) ranks third.

SPREADING THE WEALTH The Dynamo have gotten goals from 16 different players in 2011 out of a total of 25 field players who have taken the field in an MLS game. Houston has seven players with at least four goals, including co-scoring leaders Geoff Cameron, Brian Ching, and Will Bruin with five goals each and Bobby Boswell, Colin Clark, Brad Davis, and Cam Weaver with four goals apiece.

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER The Dynamo have scored 23 of their 42 goals (54.8%) in the final 15 minutes of a half, portions of the game that combine to make up 30 percent of a match. Houston has scored 14 goals in the final 15 minutes of games, most in MLS.

RE-WRITING THE RECORD BOOKS Brad Davis is playing his way to the top of the Dynamo record books. Davis is the all-time club leader in games played in all competitions (196) and MLS (158); games started in all competitions (178) and MLS (144); minutes played in MLS (12,282); and assists in all competitions (70) and MLS (61). Davis also ranks second in team history in minutes played in all competitions and third in goals in all competitions (22) and MLS goals (20).

ALWAYS THERE Goalkeeper Tally Hall is the only Houston player to contest all 2,970 minutes of the MLS regular season so far. Hall and midfielder Brad Davis are the only players to start each MLS game.

UP NEXT: PLAYOFFS BECKON The Dynamo will return to the MLS Cup Playoffs after missing last year’s postseason, but their opening game will be determined by Sunday’s result.

NEW BLOOD Of the Dynamo’s 26 players on the roster, 14 are new to the orange in 2011. Houston acquired three players via draft (Kofi Sarkodie, Will Bruin, Evan Newton), four via trade (Colin Clark, Jason Garey, Calen Carr, Adam Moffat), five via international signings (Hunter Freeman, Jermaine Taylor, Je-Vaughn Watson, Carlo Costly, Luiz Camargo), and two via the Dynamo Academy (Alex Dixon, Josue Soto).

LOCAL FLAVOR Almost one-third of the Dynamo’s current roster has close ties to Texas. Six players are native Texans (Bobby Boswell, Tyler Deric, Alex Dixon, Hunter Freeman, Francisco Navas Cobo, Josue Soto), Colin Clark attended SMU in Dallas, and Jason Garey (Gonzales, La.) has a sister, Melissa, who was a standout player at Texas A&M University in College Station.

Currently holding a 19-4-10 record for 67 points, the Galaxy would equal the MLS record for points in a season, a record that was set by the 1998 Galaxy, with a draw against the Dynamo. A win in that game would see the Galaxy finish the year with a 20-4-10 record for 70 points, setting a new league record and becoming the first team in league history to finish the season with 70 or more points. The Galaxy are 3-2-2 all-time on the road against the Dynamo, including 2-2-2 at Robertson Stadium. Sunday’s game will be LA’s final regular season game at Robertson Stadium, as the Dynamo will be moving to a new stadium in Houston at the start of next season. They have not lost there since 2008, playing to a 0-0 draw on the road against the Dynamo in 2009 and then beating them 20 at Robertson Stadium last season. SHUTOUT RECORD IN REACH: If the Galaxy can keep a shutout against Houston on Sunday night, they would set a new MLS record for shutouts in the regular season. By keeping a clean sheet against Chivas USA last week, the Galaxy matched the 2000 Kansas City Wizards league record of 17 shutouts in a season. That season, Kansas City also recorded a shutout in four of their seven MLS Cup Playoff games, including MLS Cup that season, as they beat Chicago 1-0 for the first and only championship in club history. Of LA’s 17 shutouts in the league this season, seven have come on the road, including three against Eastern Conference opponents. The Galaxy, who shutout the Dynamo 1-0 at The Home Depot Center on May 25, have not allowed a goal on the road against Houston in the last 247 minutes of play, a streak that extends back to the 2008 season when LA surrendered three goals in the opening 25 minutes of a 3-0 loss. In all competitions this season, the Galaxy have 20 shutouts in 41 games while allowing just 34 goals for a 0.80 goals against average. Josh Saunders has 11 of those shutouts, including two each of LA’s last two games. Of his 11 clean sheets, eight have come in the league while three came in the CONCACAF Champions League. Donovan Ricketts has seven shutouts and Brian Perk has one, all of which came in the league while the combination of Ricketts, Saunders and Mike Magee combined for the other in a 0-0 draw in San Jose on June 25. ADVANCING IN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: As a result of their 1-0 win over Motagua in Honduras on Thursday night, the LA Galaxy have advanced to the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League for the first time in club history. The Galaxy won Group A with a 4-2-0 record for 12 points after going 3-0-0 at home and 1-2-0 on the road. That left them in a three-way tie for first place with LD Alajuelense from Costa Rica and Monarcas Morelia from Mexico, with the Galaxy taking the top spot thanks to their superior goal differential in games played between the three teams. LA, Alajuelense and Morelia each recorded 2-2-0 records against one another, with each team winning at home while losing on the road. However, in those matches, the Galaxy had a goal differential of +1, scoring five times against those two teams while allowing just four. Morelia advance as the Group A runner-up with an even goal difference,

scoring five times and allowing five goals, while Alajuelense have be eliminated from the Champions League because of a -1 goal difference against the Galaxy and Morelia. As a result of winning Group A, the Galaxy will now be drawn against the second place finisher from Group B, C or D, meaning that they will face either Isidro Metapan from El Salvador, Seattle Sounders FC or Toronto FC in the next round, which will be played over two legs, in an aggregate goal format, with the Galaxy playing their first match on the road. The complete draw for the Championship Stage of the tournament will be held at a later date. ASSIST TITLE TO BE DECIDED: The Galaxy’s David Beckham and Houston’s Brad Davis head into the final weekend of the MLS season tied for the league lead with 15 assists apiece. Seattle’s Mauro Rosales and D.C. United’s Dwayne DeRosario are the only other two players in the league with 10 or more assists this year. If Beckham leads the league in assists, it would be the second straight season in which a Galaxy player did so, following Landon Donovan’s MLS-best mark of 16 last year. Beckham’s 15 assists are the fourth most in a single season by a Galaxy player. He is two assists shy of Mauricio Cienfuegos’ club record of 17 assists that he set in 1999 and one shy of tying Cienfuegos and Landon Donovan for the second most in a season club history. Cienfuegos had 16 for the Galaxy in 1998 while Donovan did last year. He now has 31 career assists for the club, leaving him in fifth in club history, behind only Cienfuegos, Donovan, Cobi Jones and Simon Elliott who had 33 assists for the club, leaving him in fourth place for the club. TOP TWO: While Beckham will need to wait until Sunday to see if he wins the assist title, Galaxy goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts has his gloves firmly wrapped around the title of the lowest goals against average in the league this season. Were he to play against Houston on Sunday, Ricketts would need to allow six goals or more in order to see his GAA raise high enough to drop him into second place in the league. Ricketts, who has allowed just eight goals in 14 games this season, has a 7-2-4 record with seven shutouts and an MLS-best 0.60 goals against average on the season despite missing more than half the year with arm and quad injuries. He also missed three games in June while with the Jamaica at the Gold Cup. If he can maintain his 0.60 GAA through the end of the regular season, it would set a new MLS record for the lowest single season GAA ever, breaking Kevin Hartman’s record of 0.62, which was set last season. In order to do that, Ricketts would need to keep a clean sheet against the Dynamo, were he to get the start in goal. While Ricketts has the lowest GAA in MLS, teammate Josh Saunders checks in with the second lowest in the league at 0.93. Saunders has allowed 17 goals in 19 regular season games for LA this season as he has set career highs in games played, games started, goals allowed, saves and shutouts. Only two goalkeepers in Galaxy history have ever played more than one game and had a goals against average of lower than 1.00 in a single season. Kevin Hartman had a 0.91 GAA in 1999 while Ricketts had a club record 0.90 GAA last season.

LA GALAXY GAME NOTES – October 23, 2011 FINISHING OUT THE SCHEDULE: The Galaxy will play their 34th and final game of the regular season on Sunday evening in Houston when they face the Dynamo. In the longest regular season in terms of games played, the Galaxy are 7-4-5 so far on the road and 8-1-8 against teams from the Eastern Conference heading into Sunday’s game. All-time, the Galaxy are 9-4-2 in their final game of the regular season, though they have not ended a season on the road since 2007, when they lost 1-0 to the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park. That is also the last time that the Galaxy have lost their final regular season game. Following last Sunday’s win over Chivas USA, the Galaxy are now 12-2-2 all-time in their final home game of the regular season. The Galaxy have also found success in their final road game of the season, going 7-6-2 in those matches. 10 FOR 30: By starting last week’s game against Chivas USA, Juninho became the second Galaxy player to appear in 30 regular season games for the club this season, joining Todd Dunivant, who has played in 32 of LA’s 33 regular season games this year. They could be joined in that club by A.J. DeLaGarza and Omar Gonzalez, who have each played in 209 regular season games heading into Sunday’s season finale in Houston. While just two Galaxy players have played in 30 regular season games for the club, a total of 10 have played in at least 30 of the club’s 41 official games this season. Dunivant has played the most, appearing 39 games so far, while A.J. DeLaGarza and Juninho have each played in 37. Omar Gonzalez is next on the list with 36 games played while Mike Magee has played in 34 games, Chad Barrett has played in 32 and David Beckham, Landon Donovan, Sean Franklin and Michael Stephens have al appeared in 30 games so far this year. Of the 32 players that have been on the Galaxy roster this season, only 12 of those have not played in at least 10 games this season. Of that group, only Sean Alvarado, who has missed most of the season with a knee injury, Kyle Davies, who was traded to Toronto FC in September, Jack McBean, Dustin McCarty, Dasan Robinson, who was acquired from Toronto FC in exchange for Davies last month and Ryan Thomas have not played in a single competitive game for the club. Of that group, only Alvarado and Robinson did not play in either of the games that LA played in the Herbalife World Football Challenge. LAST CHANCE FOR MCBEAN: Jack McBean has one last chance to become the youngest player ever to play for the Galaxy in an MLS regular season game this Sunday against Houston. The 16-year-old was on the bench once for LA this season and played in the friendly against Manchester City, but he is yet to appear in an MLS game. If he plays on Sunday against the Dynamo, he will become the youngest player in club history to appear in a game, breaking the current record, which is held by Israel Sesay, who made his MLS debut for LA nine days after his 17th birthday. McBean, who will turn 17 in mid-December, could also become the youngest player in club history to start a game, breaking the Guillermo Gonzlaez’s record of 17 years and 280 days when he made his first start in October 2003. Tristan Bowen is currently the youngest Galaxy player ever to score a goal, doing so last year against Columbus, but he was 19 years and 118 days old when he scored that goal, meaning that McBean has more than two years to try and break that record. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE: If the Galaxy can win, draw or lose by less than two goals against the Dynamo on Sunday, they will record the second best goal differential in club history. Currently at +22 from 47 goals scored and 25 allowed, the Galaxy have the best goal differential in MLS this season. Seattle, who are at +17, are the only other team with a goal difference of better than +10 this year.

In 1999, the Galaxy had a +20 goal difference, which is currently the second best in the history of the club. The best goal difference in both club and MLS history is +41, which was set by the 1998 Galaxy, who scored 85 goals and surrendered 44 in 32 games. UNBEATEN AT HOME: As a result of last Sunday’s 1-0 win over Chivas USA in their final home game of the regular season the Galaxy became just the third team in MLS history to finish the regular season without a loss at home. In 17 MLS regular season home games this year, the Galaxy were 12-0-5 for 41 of their league-best 67 points. They won each of their last eight home games in the league and outscored opponents 28-8 at The Home Depot Center this season, keeping 10 clean sheets while allowing more than one goal just once. The Galaxy, who are 30-9-13 at home in the regular season under Bruce Arena, are now unbeaten in their last 18 home regular season games, setting a new club record. The previous record had been 17 games, which ran from July 4, 2004 until July 16, 2005, with the Galaxy going 11-0-6 at home in that time. During their current streak, which is tied for the third longest in league history but still 11 games shy of the MLS record of 29, LA are 13-0-5. Prior to this season, only two MLS teams had ever gone the entire season without losing a game at home. The 2005 San Jose Earthquakes were 9-0-7 for 34 of a possible 48 points at home while Real Salt Lake was 11-0-4 at home in 2010, taking 37 of a possible 45 points at home. The Galaxy enjoyed their best home season in 2002, going 11-1-2 in their final year at the Rose Bowl for 35 of a possible 42 points. They then went 3-0-0 at home in the postseason, outscoring opponents 12-4 en route to winning their first MLS Cup. Heading into the MLS Cup Playoffs, where they will play at least on home game, the Galaxy are 16-0-5 In all competitions at home this year. In addition to their 12-0-5 league record, they were also 3-0-0 in the Champions League and 1-0-0 in the U.S. Open Cup, though that game, a 2-1 win over the USL’s Los Angeles Blues, was played at Titan Stadium in Fullerton. TEAM AWARD WINNERS UNVEILED: Following last Sunday’s 10 win over Chivas USA, the Galaxy handed out their annual team awards, with Landon Donovan, Sean Franklin and Omar Gonzalez all being honored. Donovan won the club’s Golden Boot as top goal scorer, tallying 12 times in the regular season so far this year, while also being voted the Most Valuable Player by the local media. This was the sixth time in Donovan’s seven years with the Galaxy that he has won the club’s Golden Boot and the fourth time he has been selected as MVP, each of which are club records. In the other award that is voted on by the media, Omar Gonzalez was selected as the club’s Defender of the Year for the second straight season, narrowly edging out Todd Dunivant, while Sean Franklin was selected as the club’s Humanitarian of the Year for his charitable work and contributions in the local community. SHIELD CLINCHED: Earlier this month, the Galaxy clinched the Supporters’ Shield for the fourth time in club history. Currently seven points ahead of the Seattle heading into the final weekend of the season, the Galaxy have clinched home field advantage throughout the MLS Cup Playoffs, which culminate with MLS Cup at The Home Depot Center on Sunday, November 20, and a berth in the Group Stage of the 2012/13 CONCACAF Champions League. The Galaxy also won the Supporters’ Shield in 1998, 2002 and 2010. In 1998 and 2010, LA lost in the Conference Championship, while in 2002 they beat the New England Revolution 1-0 to win MLS Cup for the first time in club history. That was one of five times that the Supporters’ Shield winners also won MLS Cup, with the last coming in 2008 when current Galaxy defender Frankie Hejduk captained the Columbus Crew to the Supporters’ Shield with a league-best 57 points and then their first MLS Cup, beating the New York Red Bulls 3-1 at The Home Depot Center.
