The Reptile Man from Monroe brought several of his friends to Tomorrow’s Hope to mixed reactions of fear and awe. Kids An Evening at Emory’s for ChildHope of all ages got to see and even touch snakes, alligators and Emory’s on Silver Lake Tuesday November 10, 2015 lizards and other reptiles from his zoo. Tomorrow’s Hope received a grant from Evertrust and the Whitehorse Foundation to provide literacy skills for children. Teacher’s used the visit from the Reptile Man as a vehicle to encourage parents to help with their child’s literacy goals. Leslie Elsemore, a former kindergarten teacher, shared skills with parents on reading non-fiction books and each family received a reptile book to take home. A few weeks later Dan and Kelvin, from Dan Allen Personal Training and Studio 373 , spent a day at Tomorrow’s Hope encouraging kids to stay fit. They talked about the importance of fitness and staying healthy, engaging children by asking questions such as “Which is a healthier choice: french fries or an apple? Watching tv or going on a bike ride?” Dan also created an obstacle course in the playground tailored to all age groups.

Did you know Many companies offer matching gifts meaning they will match your charitable giving, sometimes dollar for dollar! Boeing also matches retiree gifts at 50%! Check if your company matches gifts to make your gift stretch further.

Classes of all ages have several field trips planned including to the AquaSox, zoo and aquarium! All trips tie into what the students are learning in their classrooms. Nine students going into Kindergarten next year will get a sneak peek at riding a school bus thanks to Durham School Services! The company is providing a school bus and driver to teach expectations for bus behavior and take them to Madison Elementary to play on the playground. This fall, Tomorrow’s Hope and College of Hope staff are taking a training on how to remain in control, be supportive and responding correctly in tough situations thanks to a big discount from RIGHT RESPONSE. HOMES An update on current construction

Monroe Family Village update As you can see from the photo, construction at Monroe Family Village is booming! Framing on all of the nine buildings is complete and four of the buildings will be completed by the end of August. Units are already being pre-leased to eligible families. A ribbon cutting ceremony is being planned for mid-October!

Team HomeBuilding update Team HomeBuilding is part of the national USDA-RD Self Help Program. This year they reached a significant milestone of 50 Years and 50,000 homes . We helped celebrate at the French Creek site on June 26th with a volunteer work party and BBQ lunch. Volunteers helped landscape, paint trim and frame windows. The 10 families will be receiving keys to their homes on August 14th at our key ceremony. You’re invited! Housing Hope and Team HomeBuilding have been a USDA grantee for 22 years, supporting families and their volunteers in the construction of 257 homes throughout Snohomish County. Monroe Main Street Townhomes are well underway and framing of the second of five buildings nearly complete. This is the first project using prefabricated walls produced through an exciting new partnership! BMC and Weyerhaeuser supply materials to the Department of Corrections facility in Monroe and walls are assembled under the direction of Edmonds Community College staff. Hegger Short Plat is a seven home development in Monroe that will begin construction late this summer. We are also currently recruiting participants for 14 homes at a site called Parkwood Estates just outside of Arlington.

JOBS Updates from each of our Social Enterprises This has been a busy season for GroundWorks. Our first intern of the year, Jacob, has graduated and gone on to a great job. Michael, our second intern, finished his internship and was hired on as a full time crew member! We have outfitted our third crew with a truck and equipment, thanks to Boeing Employee Community Fund of Boeing Puget Sound. This generous donation has put us in position to build the business and host more interns. We are geared up for residential irrigation work, summer pruning, landscape upgrades and mulch installation. With the new truck and equipment we will be expanding our presence in the commercial landscape market. Call Steve for a quote at (425) 312-5510. www.renewwrks.com Monday - Friday: 10am - 6pm Saturday: 9am - 4pm

ReNewWorks had three interns complete their internships in the last month. Kristen and James were sales associate interns, Bryant the delivery/facility maintenance intern. All three were great additions to the store and will be missed. We are in need of volunteers! From taking inventory, to answering phones, to basic maintenance and general cleaning, we need your help! Please contact Eric at erichuenefeld@hopewrks.org. Customer service and cashier experience preferred. ReNewWorks offers pick up and delivery! All Everett zip codes are $80 for consignment pick ups & deliveries. Donated items are FREE! ReNewWorks is your source for all things one of a kind. All donations of gently used furniture begin with a photo. E-mail rwcontact@renewwrks.com We are excited to have Blanca and Cameron, our Vista Volunteers, on board. They have taken on the role of maintaining the Social Media pages for GroundWorks, HopeWorks and WaterWorks and have started marketing plans and several other sustainability projects. They are a huge asset to the HopeWorks team, making a big impact on our presence in the community.

CafeWorks Demolition and remodeling for CafeWorks at HopeWorks Station has begun! It will take about 90 days for the total remodel and the cafe is scheduled to open in fall. We have received several in-kind donations of equipment from many generous donors including Bodum, Inc, Component Design Northwest, Inc, ThermosLa Marzocco USA in Ballard, and Thermos. We are still looking for equipment. If you have any contacts in the industry, we would be very appreciative of being connected to speak to them in an effort to equip the coffee shop with in-kind donations. Contact Eric Huenefeld at erichuenefeld@hopewrks.org for more information.

Stone Soup Our largest fundraiser of the year is a great success! In May, 600 of our friends gathered at Tulalip Resort for an update on what we’ve been up to the last year. We welcomed Qualeha on stage to share her story of being a young, single mother needing a safe home, a job and to learn how to be a parent. Thanks to sponsors and your generous support, more than $248,000 was raised! Mayor Geoffrey Thomas was awarded the Housing Hero award for demonstrating commitment to solving social problems in our community. Boeing Employees Community Fund of Puget Sound was awarded the Pioneer Award for long-term commitment to the pioneering efforts of Housing Hope.

“I AM a Housing Hope success story. I will tell everybody, ‘If you’re down and need a place to stay, go to Housing Hope. You will come out a very successful person.’”

Everett AquaSox The second annual BECU presents Home Runs for Housing Hope was another success! We had a terrific silent auction with items donated by Adam’s NW Bistro and Brewery, AquaSox, BECU, EMP Museum, Far Away Entertainment, FROST, Northwest Outdoor Center, The Rock Wood Fired Pizza, Vertical World, Wicked Cellars and Xfinity Community Ice Rink. There was also a fantastic raffle prize donated by the Seattle Mariners. Heritage Bank invited us to participate in Good Karma Monday. In addition, Heritage Bank held a fundraiser at their Evergreen Way branch, selling cookies and lemonade and accepting donations to go towards Good Karma Monday. The ‘Sox donated 35 tickets for the school age class at Tomorrow’s Hope Child Development Center to attend a game for a field trip and one lucky student got to go out on the field to accept the check from Heritage Bank!

Peter’s Place In July, we held a special event honoring our long time friend and supporter Peter Henning who passed away in January. Several family members gathered at HopeWorks Station to share stories of the accomplished dairy farmer turned nuclear physicist turned real estate developer. The family gathered in the hallway for the unvieling of “Peter’s Place” - a room dedicated to creative thinking and brainstorming projects. Inside the room on the wall reads “Imagine... Believe... Do!”. A plaque in the hallway narrates Peter’s life story. Pictured are Peter’s three children Mark, Peter and Cheryl in front of “Peter’s Place”.

Windermere Foundation Golf Tournament The 21st annual Snohomish County Windermere Foundation Golf Tournament raised more than $19,000 for our ChildHope program! A special thank you to Title Sponsor Windermere Mortgage, key sponsors NuOz and Union Bank and all of our generous hole sponsors. Thank you to all of the golfers who came out and had fun on the course!

An Evening at Adam’s Adam’s NW Bistro and Brewery in Monroe hosted the second annual An Evening at Adam’s, benefitting Housing Hope families living in the Sky Valley. Adam’s staff volunteered their time and most of the food and beverages were donated, allowing majority of the funds raised to support our families. Thanks to a great turn out of very generous community members, more than $8,600 was raised for families living in East Snohomish County!

2015 Corporate Leadership Partners We are honored to thank and recognize a special group supporters businesses or business foundations that provide $25,000 on an annual basis.

Volunteer SPOT LIGHT

Team Hope Joyce Zeigen

Joyce teaches English Language Learners, an ESL class, at Twin City Elementary in Stanwood. As the school year came to an end, Joyce started to get concerned about students losing their language development over the summer. She reached out to Housing Hope, where one of her students lived, expressed her concern and a desire to volunteer at Lincoln Hill Village in Stanwood twice a week. We happily accepted! Joyce has opened up her class to include parents, siblings and even extended family members who come to visit. There is a regular, steady attendance in her classes each week and students of all ages are learning, enjoying and participating. Sue Tugi, a Case Manager, described a mother who has been attending class as very shy and timid due to her limited English. Sue has seen her grow more confident since attending the class and now she eagerly participates in the lessons. Thank you, Joyce, for making hope happen! Interested in volunteering? Join Team Hope! Contact Jana at janaphillips@housinghope.org Did you know we also need volunteers at ReNewWorks? There are several opportunities to help. Contact Eric for more information at erichuenefeld@hopewrks.org

Family Success Story Jennifer moved into Winter’s Creek Village South with her husband and four children earlier this year. Before moving in, the family was staying with Jennifer’s mother and the kids were not doing very well at home or in school. After moving into Winter’s Creek, Jennifer and her husband were able to provide a safe, stable place for their family, which allowed the children to grow at home and school. Now, they are all thriving! “Having a place to call home made it possible for me to utilize new parenting skills and provide structure and security, which directly led to my children flourishing.“ Within just a few months of being settled into their new home and finding a steady routine, Jennifer’s daughter Marisa was awarded student of the month at her school! In June, her other daughter Makina was awarded Sultan Elementary’s Student of the Year!

Meet Spencer! We are honored and excited to have another Bank of America Student Leader as an intern! Soon to be a senior at Everett High School, Spencer Knapp is assisting our Resource Development department with community outreach, presentations, organizing supply drives, data analysis and assisting in development of the curriculum for our Youth Action Council. He also got to throw the first pitch at BECU presents Home Runs for Housing Hope! Does he look familiar? Maybe you purchased ice cream from him at Everett Marina sometime over the last three years at his ice cream truck - Maulsby Lane Ice Cream! Spencer’s next endeavor is to enter Foster School of Business at UW and the Lavin Entrepreneurship Program. The Student Leaders program is an eight-week summer internship, giving students the opportunity to develop and apply leadership skills through hands-on work experience while discovering their own talents for serving their community and leading others.

Honor a loved one with a tribute gift Many of our long-term supporters like to leave a tribute gift to Housing Hope in their will as a way of honoring a family member or loved one and as a way of continuing to support a cause that is important in their lives. Making a planned gift sounds daunting to many, but there are some very simple tools to use, like a beneficiary designation, that can take as little as 10 minutes to implement. Of course there are some excellent tax benefits to be realized from various tribute gifts as well. If you’d like to further explore how you could honor a loved one and deepen your support of our families, contact me, Nate, at nategreenland@housinghope.org or (425) 347-6556 x239 to learn more. I’d love to begin that conversation with you!

Dwellings Message At our July Housing Hope staff meeting we had fun. Sixty Housing Hope staff members chanted the new Housing Hope mission statement together. Led by Chief Operating Officer Fred Safstrom, we answered four questions in raucous unison, showing the passion that drives our mission-driven staff. Who? What? Why? Where?

Housing Hope shall promote and provide! Affordable housing and tailored services! To reduce homelessness and poverty! In Snohomish County and Camano Island!

On June 22nd the Housing Hope Board of Directors adopted this revised mission statement to be clear that our housing and service programs are a means, not an end. We strive to alleviate poverty! Our vision statement says: “every person striving for self-sufficiency will have an affordable place to live”. Together, these mission and vision statements drive our work every day. These statements have been fashioned by local supporters, dedicated Board Members and passionate staff as a response to homelessness and poverty. It was created by local people who live in Snohomish County and Camano Island who have worked on these issues the past 28 years. The addition of the phrase “reduce …poverty” adds important definition and meaning to the Housing Hope approach. At Housing Hope, we know there is only one solution to escaping poverty – an adequately paying job. Everything we do, from emergency shelter to job training, revolves around our mission to alleviate poverty. For the families with children that we serve, the difference between living in poverty and self-sufficiency is nothing less than profound. We know that many of our supporters tell the Housing Hope story to friends, neighbors, family and colleagues. We invite you, our champions, to join our mission and share it with others, to help us broaden the collective energy to achieve this mission: Housing Hope shall promote and provide affordable housing and tailored services to reduce homelessness and poverty in Snohomish County and Camano Island. Edwin R. Petersen
