A Message from the Board President

Dear Friends,

Jimmy Yamauchi

It has been a privilege serving as President of the Housing Hope Board of Directors during the past year and I’d like to express my sincere appreciation to fellow Board Members and staff whose dedication and commitment to Housing Hope has resulted in another exceptional year of growth and service enhancements.

As we celebrate our 25th Anniversary, it is an opportunity to reflect back on this amazing journey. What started as a conversation in 1987 has grown into 338 residential apartments at 18 locations and 223 sweat equity houses built by low-income families. Equally impressive is the full range of services Housing Hope currently provides to its clients in case management, specialized teen parent programs, employment services, adult education and child development. Hope Works Social Enterprises, our new nonprofit employment subsidiary, represents the latest evolution of Housing Hope’s expanding services to our residents. The development of social enterprises is designed to increase the income of homeless families and individuals by providing training for career ladder employment opportunities accompanied by associated wage progressions. Looking toward the next 25 years, we begin this next year with ambitious plans: • • • • • •

Team HomeBuilding plans to assist 45 low-income families to build and attain home ownership through sweat equity. Completion of the 14 unit Woods Creek Village development in Monroe. Complete plans for the construction of the 47 unit Monroe Family Village, a major service enriched housing development designed to respond to the needs of families in east Snohomish County. Purchase the 10 unit Pilchuck Place apartments, thus extending our programs to the city of Snohomish for the first time. Launched WaterWorks Irrigation Services as the second HopeWorks social enterprise to complement GroundWorks Landscaping, our first enterprise. Continued enhancement of our College of Hope programs and our child development services.

To our generous and loyal donors, event sponsors, grantors and volunteers we say THANK YOU. Your support has enabled Housing Hope to create comprehensive solutions that assist homeless residents to become productive members of Snohomish County and place them on pathways for long term self sufficiency.

Jimmy Yamauchi President

Tina and Kyle - An East County Success Story Tina and Kyle thought they had their life in order. They both had jobs, were able to afford rent and support not only themselves but their very two young children. One day all that changed. First, Kyle lost his job. Shortly after, so did Tina. Neither one could find a job. Tina eventually found a position as a part time barista, but it didn’t cover their bills. They couldn’t afford rent and had to move into the only thing they could 26 find – a small apartment in Skykomish with holes in the floor and shoddy plumbing. There were times when Tina and Kyle would have to collect water from the creek and boil it to cook and clean. Eventually Tina and Kyle were able to move into Winter’s Creek Village North in Sultan where they received the support and direction needed to get back on their feet. Since then, both have completed their GEDs and have reentered the workforce. The family will soon be moving out and on with their lives, without needing further support from Housing Hope.

Excerpt from a letter from Leanne, a Team HomeBuilding homeowner

backyard’…that has an awesome ring to it :) “ I will never be able to express in words how it feels to be able to have my children living in a home that is safe, warm, and healthy with no mold, holes in the walls, drafts blowing through, or rats living in the walls. Without Housing Hope this dream would never have come true and we would still be living a nightmare. Thank you, thank you, thank you. The simplest things, like cooking a meal for my family or doing laundry at home instead of loading everything into the car and going to the Laundromat, give me the greatest satisfaction. It is said that you have to have bad times to appreciate the good. My family and I are most definitely appreciating the good. I can sit here on the bed and look out my window and see my dogs sunning themselves in our back yard. ‘Our backyard’... that has an awesome ring to it :)

HopeWorks Mission Statement: HopeWorks helps low-income Snohomish County residents achieve self-sufficiency through social enterprises that provide training and pathways to living wage jobs.

HopeWorks Social Enterprises, a subsidiary of Housing Hope, completed its first full year of operations this fiscal year. Over the past two decades Housing Hope made a significant investment in stabilizing homeless and low-income families in our community by providing them with housing and supportive services. What was still missing, however, was an employment model that matches the family circumstances with navigable pathways that lead to real career and wage progression opportunities. HopeWorks addresses this gap and creates solutions to real economic challenges facing homeless and low-income families living in our housing and at our partner agencies by developing social enterprise businesses within industries with income progression pathways, while also providing a valuable service in the community.

HopeWorks has made significant strides toward this effort over the past year. Accomplishments include: • HopeWorks achieved 501c3 non-profit status • GroundWorks Landscaping added new contracts, staff and internships • WaterWorks Irrigation Services was started as a new social enterprise • HopeWorks hired a GroundWorks and WaterWorks Program Manager • Planning began for a third social enterprise

Nine staff members from Everett High School volunteered with our GroundWorks crew at New Century Village, helping clean up the grounds. They also donated a wheelbarrow to GroundWorks and put it to good use that day!

Just a sample of our many in-kind donations

Eight Edward Jones offices from King & Snohomish County held a month-long supply drive.

Archbishop Murphy Cheer Squad donated warm blankets to Tomorrow’s Hope Childcare Center. For several years, Holy Rosary Parish in Edmonds has donated Easter baskets to Housing Hope families. This year, they donated over 450 - more than ever before!

Adrianne Nash donates dozens of homemade baskets throughout the year.

The NW American Association of Critical Care Nurses donated 6 very full laundry baskets full of essentials.

Team Hope Almost 25 years ago, Housing Hope was founded by six volunteers who wanted to make an impact on homelessness in Snohomish County. Today, volunteers are still instrumental in the success of Housing Hope. In the last fiscal year, 339 volunteers spent 8,547 hours helping Housing Hope. That’s equivalent to 4.1 full time staff members, or a savings of more than $170,000 in salary at the wage needed to afford cost of living in Snohomish County. These photos represent only a portion of the volunteer opportunities at Housing Hope. In addition to building houses with Team HomeBuilding; answering phones at our administrative offices; providing childcare at Tomorrow’s Hope; or teaching classes to College of Hope; several community members also organize work parties and supply drives to provide our families with basic need items.
