Message from the Board President

Dear Friends,

Robert Walker

For over twenty-five years, it has been the mission of Housing Hope to deal with the issue of homelessness in Snohomish County and Camano Island by “promoting and providing a continuum of safe, decent, affordable housing and necessary related services for very low income residents”. Our aspiration, as we work toward that mission, is that “Housing Hope will be the best locally-based service-enriched housing continuum in the world”.

Once again we have succeeded in meeting those goals. There is no agency that is better than Housing Hope in fully dealing with raising families out of the issues that trap them in homelessness. Our success is fostered by an operational model that solicits a high degree of involvement from the community, excellent partnering with County, State and Federal agencies, and a talented and technically-minded management team and staff. As a member of the Board, I have been amazed at how our staff has responded to the visions and objectives that we have cast to them. In every instance, they have not only picked up the challenge, but have carried it well past our original goal. I am exceptionally proud of the work that is accomplished by each of them. I must also commend you, our community of supporters, for it is on your wave of enthusiasm that this agency surfs. You have been diligent with passion, creative and financial support. I take this year’s Stone Soup as an indicator of your approval of Housing Hope’s past performance, strategic plans and its impact on the community. We deeply appreciate the confidence that you have entrusted to Housing Hope. It is an honor to serve with the members of the Housing Hope Board of Directors whose wisdom and tenacity stands in the forefront as we together move Housing Hope forward.

Robert N Walker President

Families receive keys to the new homes they built at Marvin Gardens

Housing & Services Pilchuck Place - our first development in the City of Snohomish!

Housing Hope makes an impact in East Snohomish County Team HomeBuilding Twenty-one low-income adults built 14 new homes from foundation to finish at the Marvin Gardens site in Monroe. These houses were built through our Team HomeBuilding program and provided 21 adults and 25 children with a new home. The first five finished in July 2012 and the remaining nine in February of 2013. Thirty-three additional new homes for low income first time homeowners are in process at three locations in the Monroe/Snohomish area.

Multi-Family Housing

Woods Creek Village in Monroe expanded to add six affordable rent units to the already existing six homeless and two affordable rent units. The expansion also added a new community room and children’s room, community garden, native growth greenbelt, and new playground equipment.

Monroe Family Village Housing Hope is planning the biggest housing development in its history. The new site, starting construction later this year, will have 47 units: one emergency shelter, nine homeless units and 37 affordable rent units. It will also have a 3,000 square foot community room and be a regional service center so Sultan, Monroe and Snohomish families won’t have to travel to Everett to receive services to grow in self-sufficiency.

Making a mark in Snohomish Housing Hope first made an appearance in East Snohomish County in 1993. Since then, 55 units and homes have been added in Sultan, and Monroe. We are excited to now be serving families in Snohomish! In August, we purchased Pilchuck Place to create 10 new affordable rent units. In November, construction was started at Rose Park - a new Team HomeBuilding site. This site will have 10 new homes and is set to be completed in early 2014. Plans are in motion for another Team HomeBuilding site in Snohomish - French Creek Bluff, which will also have 10 homes. Construction is set to start in early 2014.

GroundWorks Crew

Economic Empowerment

What is HopeWorks? The crucial step to getting out of poverty is securing and maintaining a well paying job - the motive for the creation of HopeWorks Social Enterprises. Over the past two decades a significant investment has been made in developing and providing housing and services for homeless and low-income families in our community. Once stabilized, these families have the platform to build knowledge and skills for increased employability.

Mission Statement To help low-income Snohomish County residents achieve self sufficiency through social enterprises and provide training and pathways to living wage jobs.

However, an employment model that matches the family circumstances and develops pathways that lead to living wage opportunities has been missing. HopeWorks addresses this gap by creating social enterprise businesses and providing residents the chance to gain job skills and experience with the potential for employment-growth, while providing a valuable service in our community.

Investing in HopeWorks HopeWorks has received very generous grants over the last year, allowing the organization to continue to grow in size and expand horizons. A big thank you to: Bank of America, BECU, Boeing, Greater Everett Community Foundation, Henry M Jackson Foundation, Investing in Families, JP Morgan Chase Foundation, Medina Foundation, Toyota 100 Cars for Good and The Whitehorse Foundation!

GroundWorks Landscaping Now in its third year, this social enterprise is thriving! In March the company reached self-sufficiency and now manages contracts over 69 sites throughout the county. It also has the largest crew in its history with six fulltime employees, three of which are graduates of the internship program and were hired on full time after the completion of their training. WaterWorks Irrigation Services continues its development and is pursuing new contracts and partnerships.

ReNewWorks Home and Decor Store We are excited to announce our newest social enterprise! This upscale consignment store is selling gently used fine home furnishings and unique gift items online and on location in Everett. Items sold are either donated to the store or are sold through consignment. Visit the Web site at www.renewwrks.com or swing by the store at 7100 Evergreen Way, Suite C, Everett.

ChildHope

Children are a priority Housing Hope has a robust child development program to help children and families overcome the effects of homelessness and poverty, not just at Housing Hope, but at other partner agencies in the county. This past winter and spring, a task force was formed to identify what the needs are in the county for a child development program and to determine how Housing Hope might be poised to meet these needs. With thanks to the community leaders listed below, a decision was made that not only was there a significant need for an intensive child development program, but that Housing Hope was the lead agency able to handle and tackle such a task. At Stone Soup, the new title for all the pieces of the program was announced: ChildHope. There are four components to this program: Tomorrow’s Hope Child Development Center: 112 licensed childcare slots specializing in equipping children from homeless and very low-income families to reach appropriate school age development. In-home Child Specialist: Expert one-on-one support in their home environment for homeless parents who have children with developmental disabilities. Parent Education through College of Hope: Parenting classes to equip homeless and low-income parents for successful parenting with children of all ages. Homeless Teen Parents: New Century Village provides a safe, secure home and life skills education for the development of young, healthy families.

United Way Day of Caring - Premera Blue Cross at Team HomeBuilding

In the last year, 508 individuals collectively volunteered 6,430 hours at Housing Hope. Today, a growing number of companies are making donations to non-profits for the time their employees spend volunteering. Thanks to two employees of these companies, we have received $918 from Microsoft for 54 hours of volunteer time and $1,000 from Boeing for 100 volunteer hours!

Events Update Snohomish County Windermere Foundation Golf Tournament Thanks to golfers and sponsors, the 18th annual tournament raised more than $11,000 for our families! First Annual Fill the House for Housing Hope! We partnered with BECU and the Everett Silvertips and created a new event for their season opener! A portion of program, chuck-apuck and a section of ticket sales, as well as a special raffle raised $998! Housing Hope turned 25 on September 30, 2012! We threw at a large party with 300 of our friends and supporters at the Historic Flight Foundation in Mukilteo. Building Hope: the first 25 years of Housing Hope was released at the event. The book, written by historian David Buerge, describes how our community came together to create and provide solutions to affordable housing and family homelessness. Check out our Web site for more information or to purchase your copy. Author David Buerge sig ning copies of the book

Community of Hope Dinner The 9th annual East County dinner raised a record $32,000 for families living in East Snohomish County! Entertainment was provided by Lord Hill String Quartet (pictured).

Stone Soup raised a whopping $245,000! At Stone Soup we met Elisabeth, a young mother who utilized all of Housing Hope services including: housing and case management through the teen parent program at New Century Village; received a degree through the CATCH (Creating Access to Careers in Healthcare) program; and enrolled her two children at Tomorrow’s Hope Childcare Center. She is continuing her education, working on getting a degree in medical billing and is well on the path to leaving our housing!

More than 100 volunteers collectively spent 450 hours to put finishing touches on the newly expanded Woods Creek Village. The volunteer labor saved Housing Hope an estimated $15,000 that can now be used for supportive services.

Volunteers of all ages came from as far as Wenatchee and as close as Monroe to help build a trash enclosure, install a monument sign, finish the playground installation, dig trenches for irrigation sleeves, build a community garden area and spread wood chips.
