Dear Reader, Welcome to Issue 3 Volume 3. This month we take you to Black Mountain for the True Thailand Golf Classic with a record two million USD’s in prize money. Find out who had the big payday on page 24. Speaking of Golf, Mondo Vino once again sponsored their charity golf tournament at the Banyan Golf Course raising close to 300,000 THB for Thailand’s disadvantaged schools, page 20. The Hua Hin Hyatt Regency BARAI Spa has won many awards, not only for its treatments but also for its stunning architecture. On March 1st Sammy Carolus, GM of the Hotel and Spa invited selected guests to a dinner and concert in honor of the Barai’s 8th anniversary, sit in on page 32. In 1923 writer/director Henry MacRae traveled to Thailand to make his film “Miss Suwanna of Siam”. Since then thousands of movies and tens of thousands of television programs and commercials have been filmed here. This month we take you to the third annual film festival that honors Thailand as a destination. Grab your popcorn, take a seat and turn to page 40. Sukhothai figures as the first known capital of the ancient Kingdom of Siam, which in due time would become what we know today as the Kingdom of Thailand. This month we not only take you to the ancient city of Sukhothai on page 60, we also take you to the luxurious 5 star Sukhothai hotel in the heart of Bangkok, page 68. After reading the articles I believe you will want to personally visit both stunning locations. Finally, in recognition of our expanded Bangkok coverage we are pleased to bring you our inaugural Bangkok restaurant review. Come with us to the Millennium Hilton’s Prime Steakhouse and their rooftop 360 lounge. Fantastic food with a view to match, that’s on page 66. Thanks for picking us up and we hope you enjoy the read.

L ET’S MEET Mike Fijas

What is your full name and age? Michael Fijas - 47yrs old What is your current Job Position? General Manager of Vana Nava Hua Hin Water Jungle How long have you lived in Hua Hin or been coming to Hua Hin? I have lived in Thailand for 1 year and in Hua Hin for 9 months of that. What did you know about Hua Hin before you moved here? I knew it was a smaller beach town where many Thais came to vacation and that the King spent a lot of time here. What do you like most about your profession? I like that I get to spend so much time around people having fun and knowing that I was able to help facilitate that. What do you like least about your profession? Crabby, grouchy, rude people. What do you like most about Hua Hin? I love the laid back, beach feel and vibe. What is your favorite restaurant and why? I would have to say Zab Wer on Soi 112 as I can get good food served by a friendly staff and my children are happy as they get to play on the playground. What do you like to do in your free time and why? I like to take the family and spend time together exploring new places and the outdoors. What would you recommend to newcomers to do in Hua Hin and why? Get out and meet new people, try new places. There are so many things to do and see - I’ve found out about most of them by talking to people and checking recommendations out. Tell us a surprising fact that the public might not know about you? I have been in the amusement & waterpark business since I was a teenager - 29 years! What is the most outlandish thing you have ever done and why? I love the outdoors, so… I took an unguided trip in Alaska where a couple of us were dropped off by a floatplane at the head of a river and had to meet the plane again a week later at the end of the river.

Hilton opens beachfront CHAY HAD

16

Mar 15 - Apr 15 , 2015

O

n Valentine evening, couples in love had the pleasure of experiencing a pre-opening dinner at CHAY HAD, the Hua Hin Hilton’s new seaside eatery and lounge. Offering unrivaled panoramic sea views, the evening’s special menu included lobster, fresh oysters and sparkling wine. At CHAY HAD, East meets West, as they creatively pair Thai, Asian and Western flavors with the freshest local and imported crustaceans, seafood, meats, local produce and spices. The menu items have been handpicked by The Hua Hin Hilton’s Executive Chef Shaun Venter. The menu selection can best be described as Modern Thai, Seafood & Fusion. According to Shaun, “By “Fusion” we mean that the menu has a broad selection of cuisines and cooking styles. It does not necessarily mean that we have changed them from the original, we simply take our favorite dishes and enhance them through modern presentation and adding import ingredients (where needed). A few of Shaun’s personal favorites are his Golden Fried Tiger Prawns which are served in a tamarind glaze sauce and topped with crispy shallots, toasted chilli and fried kaffire lime leaves. Another personal favorite of Shaun’s is his WokFried Canadian Lobster where the lobster is fried in egg white and potato starch flour until golden and cooked. He then tosses them in a hot Wok together with black pepper, golden garlic, sugar and salt. Another menu item that he is excited about is their Shells. Again according to Shaun, “in the menu we have a section called “Shells” where we have fresh live local and imported shellfish and we offer them in several different cooking styles whether it be Western, Singaporean, Thai, Indian or just steamed or grilled. There is also a selection of unique dishes on the menu which are our own creations and these are the ones which we are hoping will eventually become our signatures. In addition to the restaurant, CHAY HAD also has a great lounge which is the newest place to be seen and the destination of choice for the who’s who in Hua Hin. This trendy cocktail lounge thrives all day long and guests from around the globe can be seen lounging, relaxing and simply getting lost in the sun with a cold beer or cocktail and some smart bar snacks. As the day goes on and the sun sets, CHAY HAD LOUNGE evolves into a chic cocktail bar worthy of being classed as the best venue in Hua Hin.

aturday morning on the 28th of February, if you were a golfer, the place to be was the Banyan Golf course for the Annual Mondo Vino Shotgun Golf Tournament. Presented by the restaurants La Grappa, Le Bistro, Café Crepes and the Banyan Golf Club this well-organized event saw a record 148 golfers participate in this annual charity tournament. In addition to the competition during the day, there was a great wine dinner and auction at the Banyan Clubhouse that evening. Close to 300,000 baht was raised which will go to purchasing material and equipment for disadvantaged Thai schools in cooperation with the Hua Hin’s Rotary Club’s charity efforts. Mondo Vino in cooperation with La Grappa, Le Bistro and Cafe Crepes took good care of all the participants serving finger food and Prosecco during the day and a fantastic Wine Dinner that evening. Next year’s tournament has already been planned with a booked date of Saturday February 27th, 2016. TRUE THAILAND CLASSIC Presented by Black Mountain

24

Mar 15 - Apr 15 , 2015

T

he Black Mountain golf club has hosted big important tournaments but none were as prestigious as the True Thailand Classic presented by Black Mountain, held February 12th thru the 15th. The True Thailand Classic was co-sanctioned by both the Asian and European tours and is the first European Tour tournament in the country since 2007. Over 150 players took part, all with the hopes of bringing home a major share of the record $2 million USD in prize money. However it was Australia’s Andrew Dodt who staged a dramatic fight back with a closing five-under-par 67 to lift the trophy on Sunday. Dodt’s winning total of 16-under-par 272 at the Black Mountain Golf Club left him speechless as his second victory on the region’s premier Tour finally ended a five-year title drought. Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee’s double-bogey on 13 effectively ended all hopes of a local winner at the US$2 million Thai showpiece as he signed off with a 71 to share second place with overnight leader Scott Hend of Australia at the richest golf tournament in Thailand. Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat meanwhile bounced back from the disappointment of missing the cut in Malaysia to enjoy a tied-fourth finish alongside Canada’s Richard T. Lee and Jason Knutzon of the United States following a 274 total. After five years, Dodt completed his remarkable return to the winner’s circle with a performance that left him searching for words. “There are no thoughts at the moment. I’m speechless,” said the Australian, who started the day four shots back of Hend. But it was Dodt’s ability to stay patient that made all difference.

After a hat-trick of birdies from his opening first hole, the 29-year-old parred his next eight holes before picking up further gains on 12 and 15 which effectively sealed his win. “Those three birdies really kept the momentum going and I hung on after that. “The winds picked up on the back-nine and it got pretty tricky towards the end and I tried to play as sensibly as I could. I’m glad I did it,” said Dodt.

Thongchai delighted the home crowd when he surged in contention following birdies on the first and 12 holes. However a costly double-bogey on 13 pegged him back. “I made some mistakes with the club selection especially on 13. The pin positions were tough especially on the back-nine,” said Thongchai. The Thai had an eagle putt on the last to win, but he left it 10 feet short and missed the birdie attempt

Scott Hend

which would have forced a play-off with Dodt. “I tried my best. But it’s okay. Andrew was a deserving winner as he put up a great performance. I’ll try again the next time,” said Thongchai. Hend had an encouraging start after he birdied two of his opening four holes. But it went downhill after that as he bogeyed the seventh, 14th and 17th holes which eventually saw him close with a 72. “I pressed for the win on 17 and got a

bit aggressive with my bunker shot, and I finished one shot behind. I came here to try to win. “All in all it was a good solid week and there are a lot of positives to take out of it. It’s good to see Dodt winning, fantastic. Obviously I wish it was me standing there winning, but congratulations to him,” said Hend. Harald Elisson, Black Mountain General Manager was very pleased with the tournament saying, “The True Thailand Classic presented by Black Mountain was a huge success, not only for Black Mountain but also for Hua Hin and Thailand as a world-class golf destination. Several hundred million people around the world were able to see the tournament live and learn about the wonderful attractions of Hua Hin”. Harald went on you say, “As this was the first of a three-year commitment to host the event, we know the 2016 Thailand Classic will be even better, and will bring even more attention to Hua Hin. As a co-sanctioned Asian Tour and European Tour event, we expect another high-class field next year and have already begun planning for the tournament. The great positive is that Hua Hin is now firmly established as a European Tour venue”.

SONGKRAN

I

t’s that time of the year again! For the 13th, 14th and 15th of April, prepare yourself, your plans and your water guns, as Songkran is fast approaching! Songkran is a traditional Thai festivity which marks the beginning of the Thai New Year and is voraciously celebrated by everyone in the country. Processions with pictures of Buddha are common and more common still is the splashing of water. Thailand doesn’t get any hotter than during its April month, something that makes Songkran a refreshing, enjoyable and much needed celebration in Thai tradition. On this day, enormous masses of exhilarated people flood the streets to splash water at each other: buckets, cups, glasses water pistols… you name it. Dressed in colourful outfits, they all march to the rhythm of songs and dance to welcome the coming year, in which the water is said to symbolise the

30

Mar 15 - Apr 15 , 2015

washing away of all the accumulated bad luck. In that spirit, nobody is excluded from the cleansing, so being on the streets is a definite invitation for water to be thrown at you – Nobody is excluded! For the Thais, Songkran is a festivity to spend time with the family. Young members are granted blessings by elders, by having water poured over their heads. People visit temples too, where water is poured over pictures of Buddha. In Hua Hin, the most prominent time for water-splashing is the inaugural day – Go to places such as Pattaya and Chiang Mai however, and you will have three intense days of soaking people! This Songkran, come out of your hiding, submerge yourself in the experience and have a fantastically refreshing day!

Mar 15 - Apr 15 , 2015

On Sunday evening March 1st, Sammy Carolus, General Manager of the Hua Hin Hyatt Regency and BARAI SPA hosted THE BARAI Musical Journey Dinner and Concert featuring the famous Swedish composers and artists C-M Carlsson and Wojtek Goral.

Mar 15 - Apr 15 , 2015

33

The evening was a long time in the making and began with a chance meeting between Sammy and C-M who had stayed at the Hyatt Regency many times. As C-M explains, “The first time I saw and experienced THE BARAI it was just instantly love at first sight! After exploring the architecture, the colours, the beauty, the serenity. I felt that THE BARAI really deserved to have their own authentic music compositions for each part of the beautiful journey and I wanted to be a part of it.” As C-M further explains, “One day as a regular guest

at the Hyatt Regency I met the General Manager Mr. Sammy Carolus. We both started to concretize my vision that has now become THE BARAI Musical Journey”. The evening began with music and traditional Thai dancing within the confines of the BARAI’S SALARAI. Guests then wound their way through to the TRANQUILITY COURT where wine and hors d’oeuvres were served while guests mingled and enjoyed relaxing music. The final journey led to the beachfront McFarlane house where Hua

Hin Hyatt’s Executive Chef Christoph Trocker and his team had a feast of delectable Thai and Western favorites waiting for the guests to enjoy. After speeches from Sammy, C-M and Lek Bunnag, the architect responsible for designing THE BARAI, C-M and Wojtek musically entertained the guests with current hits and tracks from the BARAI Musical Journey. A great night was had for all who attended and it was the perfect way to honor THE BARAI’s eighth anniversary.

CHINESE NEW YEAR at Anantara

36

Mar 15 - Apr 15 , 2015

C

hinese New Year is the longest and most important celebration in the Chinese calendar. The Chinese year 4713 began on Feb. 19th. Chinese months are reckoned by the lunar calendar, with each month beginning on the darkest day. New Year festivities traditionally start on the first day of the month and continue until the fifteenth, when the moon is brightest. In China, people may take weeks of holiday from work to prepare for and celebrate the New Year. Mar 15 - Apr 15 , 2015

38

Mar 15 - Apr 15 , 2015

Legend has it that in ancient times, Buddha asked all the animals to meet him on Chinese New Year. Twelve came, and Buddha named a year after each one. He announced that the people born in each animal’s year would have some of that animal’s personality. Those born in sheep years are often artistic, charming, sensitive, and sweet. It is known as the most creative sign in the Chinese zodiac. Jane Austen, Boris Becker, Jamie Foxx, Mel Gibson, Michelangelo, Mark Twain, Rudolph Valentino, Barbara Walters, Bruce Willis, and Orville Wright were born in the year of the sheep. At the Anantara Hua Hin Resort & Spa on the evening of February 19th the New Year was celebrated with a Seaside Festive Gala. Executive Chef Peter Held put together a delectable dinner buffet of Chinese specialties which included suckling pig and Peking duck pancakes as well as a Dim Sum Station, a Carving Station, a Hainan BBQ Station and authentic Chinese deserts. The sixty plus guests were entertained with a traditional Chinese Dragon dance as well as great live music making for a memorable start to the Chinese New Year.

Thailand International Film Destination Festival 2015

40

Mar 15 - Apr 15 , 2015

W

hen writer/director Henry MacRae travelled to Thailand in 1923 to make his film ‘Miss Suwanna of Siam’, he probably had little idea that this was the start of a long and successful relationship between Hollywood and Thailand. Since then, thousands of films and tens of thousands of television programs and commercials have been filmed in Thailand. It is not just Hollywood producers that recognize the country’s attractions as a location. Producers from Japan, Europe, Australia, India and many other countries regularly film in the “Land of Smiles”. For many, the most iconic use of Thailand’s settings is still James Bond’s ‘The Man with the Golden Gun’ in which islands of Phuket were used as the base of 007’s arch-villain, Scaramanga. Marlon Brando filmed in Thailand in 1963, appearing with Thai statesman Kukrit Pramoj, who went on to become Prime Minister of Thailand. One of Bruce Lee’s most famous films ‘The Big Boss’ was filmed in Thailand too, along with both the original and the remake of ‘Around the World in 80 Days’. In films like ‘Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason’, ‘Bangkok Dangerous’ and ‘The Hangover Part II’, Thailand was a crucial part of the story. But there have been many occasions where shooting has taken place in Thailand to represent the scenario of a totally different country. All the Rambo films had sequences filmed in Thailand, where the country represented Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Myanmar. In ‘Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith’, Krabi was used to depict the home planet of the Wookiees. In “The Killing Fields”, Thailand’s locations were made to look like Khmer Rouge-era Cambodia. Hua Hin’s own Centara Grand Resort (then known as the Railway Hotel) was portrayed as Phnom Penh’s leading hotel in the hectic days just before that city’s fall. The film went on to win 3 Academy Awards. Having experienced Thailand, directors and stars often return. Oliver Stone, Wong Kar-wai, Jackie Chan, and Jean-Claude Van Damme are regular visitors. Thailand has featured in many international TV series. Chefs including Gordon Ramsay, Anthony Bourdain, Rick Stein, Ken Hom and Japan’s Iron Chefs have all shot culinary programs in Thailand. For globe-trotting series like ‘The Amazing Race’, ‘The Bachelor’ and ‘Survivor’, Thailand is a regular feature. In recent years, the rising economies of other ASEAN nations have also created new opportunities for the Thai Mar 15 - Apr 15 , 2015

production industry. Commercials from across the region are often filmed and post-produced in Thailand. Fortunately, Thailand is home to so many unique and beautiful locations that there are always fresh treasures awaiting visiting film-makers. Its film service providers constantly update equipment, and its crews adapt to new technologies, and government support combined with private initiatives will ensure that Thailand’s star continues to shine on screens across the world. As recognition, and in celebration of the growth of filming in Thailand, the Thailand Film Office in 2013 organized the first Thailand International Film Destination Festival. It was a great success, attracting directors, actors, press and film students from across the world. This year, its 3rd, the festival was held once again under the concept “Scenery, Scenes, Seen on Screen” with the aim to promote new unseen locations around the country to be used by filmmakers as the backdrops to their movies. A new aspect to this year’s film

42

Mar 15 - Apr 15 , 2015

festival was the “Amazing Thailand Film Challenge”. Thirty-six competing teams from 16 countries were provided return flights, four nights’ accommodation, a budget of 30,000 Thai Baht (approx $1,000), and professional production support. Each team comprised of two filmmakers, who were challenged to see who had the imagination, creativity, resourcefulness, and ingenuity to be able to research, travel, and make a film in a new and unfamiliar country in a limited time. It was an opportunity for the participating teams to meet fellow film-makers from across the world, to share ideas and learn from the different cultures, and to visit the extraordinary Kingdom of Thailand. Starting February 5th, the chosen filmmakers gathered in Thailand and prepared for the challenge of their lives. Over the next six days, they were spread across Thailand in 36 teams and each made a short film. The filmmakers had to find the subject; actors or interviewees, take on all the technical roles, and edit

the film to a 10th of February deadline. Another part of this year’s film festival was “Thailand On Screen” where a series of screenings showed the diverse range of films that have been shot in Thailand, with guest appearances by some of the film-makers and crew. The films varied from Hollywood commercial films to independent works. There were some classics and some films that were Thailand premieres. On Thursday February 12th on the top floor of Siam Paragon in Bangkok the Red Carpet Awards Ceremony took place with Actors, Director’s & Producers from around the world attending the splashy event. Honorable Awards went to famous Thai movie actors Sahajak Boonthanakit, Pong Nawat Kulrattanarak, Ananda Everingham, Mike Pirat Nitipaisalkul & Aom Sushar Manaying for their contribution to Thailand’s international film industry. The top award for The Amazing Thailand Film Challenge for young filmmakers went to Team 14 from Spain whose movie Blissful City was shot in Burirum earning them 300,000 baht as the top prize. Judging from the full participation both on and off the red carpet it seems like Thailand’s future as a world film destination is pleasantly assured.

Red Piano

T

his month’s Let’s Eat section features a cozy and stylish restaurant located at the centre of one of Hua Hin’s busiest streets. Our HOT Magazine team was kindly invited to a fine dining session at Red Piano restaurant, a place that jumps at the eye due to the contrasting predominance of its red décor. As we walked in to the tune of The Beatles, we were greeted by a chique and pleasant atmosphere; and were seated at an ample round table with a circular white leather couch. Soon to follow were signature cocktails: a bright red house specialty called Red Piano with local spirits and lichee extract and a fresh Blue Angel, with main ingredients of vodka and blue curacao. The former was very pleasant

to the pallate, characterised by a sour dash and a tropical sensation. The latter offered an intense sweetness that filled the senses with an aromatic perfume. Chef Ian Jones’ hosted us for the night and started us with a wonderful selection of appetizers, which got the dinner going in spectacular fashion: First up was a portion of duck foi gras & chicken liver pate which came in a stylish elongated wooden board along with some slices of toasted white baguette and a pineapple and ginger jam condiment. The combination of the condiment with the pate and foi gras was magnificent, as it provided a sweet balance to an already very complete dish. Soft, smooth and laid on crunchy warm bread, it was

impeccable. Then came a wonderful vegetarian tapas board with a triple selection of Baba Ganoush, roast red pepper hummus and feta cheese with sun-dried tomatoes. This was served with a portion of crispy home-made foccacia bread. Whilst all three were on a par with the pate, what stood out here was the feta cheese: creamy, delicate, balanced and aromatic, it provided a true pampering of the senses. Before we knew it, we were heading into our main course, expectations were high judging from the starters and Chef Ian did not disappoint: the first dish consisted of a roasted rack of lamb with herb crust, an Asian ratatuille and thyme potato wedges topped off with

pan juices. The dish was exquisite; the lamb had a crunchy contour and was soft within. The meat was juicy and wonderfully complemented by the ratatouille and the potatoes, which had an enticing roasted aroma. We were then presented with a dish of baked sea bass on warm new potato salad, sour cream, asparagus and a caper vierge sauce. This was a wonderful treat: the soft consistency to the fish and the smooth texture of the potatoes gave the pallate a very pleasant sensation, balanced perfectly with the defining taste of the asparagus and the sour touch of the capers. Chef Ian lets us know that to provide a fresh taste to his dishes; he ventures

the Thai market every morning, where he acquires all the seafood and the vegetables. “We always have a daily special he says, including a changing home-made soup. His passion for local Thai spices always leads him to think about ways in which to include them to his dishes, including those in which he fuses European and Asian tastes. Our last dish was a veritable delicacy, in the form of a stunning dessert: Banana sticky toffee pudding with toffee sauce. We knew this one was coming before we even saw it, as the aroma of the sticky toffee sauce (brought separately in a stylish which porcelain holder) engulfed the air. Presented with a crispy sheet of dried banana, embedded on a scoop

of vanilla ice cream, this is a mouthwatering treat for those with a sweet tooth. The pudding was soft, the banana crunchy, the ice cream cold, the sauce hot and the combination of all of those, dazzling. We left Red Piano incredibly satisfied, having had a superb meal in a great atmosphere under some very attentive service. We sadly missed the regular live music that Red Piano offers on most weekdays and weekends. It would have been nice to sit out in the breeze of their cozy indoor terrace whilst listening to the piano lead the jazz band. However, if the music is as good as the food, you can be assured to expect a sensational treat!

Amari

I

must say that from the very first moment Amari’s PR Manager, Khun Natchanok introduced me to Khun Sangsuwan, the Breeze Spa manager, I was very impressed with his intuitiveness, professionalism, his-in depth knowledge of his area of expertise, his excitement about the service and products the Breeze Spa was able to provide but also his wholehearted respect and endeavour to completely understand and satisfy each and every customer. Comprehensive customer feedback dictated that spa patrons were looking for a new spa experience, hence the uniquely innovative Breeze Spa Mood was born, using constantly evolving modern techniques, accompanied by new state-of-the-art products

incorporating five “mood” therapies. The five moods now accentuated in the spa treatment are “Dreamy”, “Serene”, “Rejuvenate”, “Invigorate” and “Energize”. All treatment is based on one or a combination of these 5 moods best suited to the individual. The first step towards this new mood spa initiative was in interior design. Amari Breeze Spa was designed for customers to have an ambient entrance into a seaside influenced, calmly welcoming reception area which ultimately flows through to light filled treatment rooms, musically enhanced with the distant relaxing sounds of the sea. Amari Breeze Spa staff speak with customers both on arrival and departure to find out their individual body status,

their mood state, along with their expectations of their spa experience. Highly trained technicians are then able to suggest the most pertinent mood treatment options best suited to each individual customer. Warmed conch shells, oils and creams used during treatment and teas consumed following treatment, reflect their Thai sources of origin with their health and well being benefits arising from both land and sea, all uniquely created for the Amari Breeze Spa “Mood” experience. This year there has been a new Signature “Mood” Breeze Spa Launch in the Amari Hua Hin. There is a new body scrub using Mango fruit, combined with the exfoliating powders of Thai jasmine rice and pearl, which are rich in essential vitamins and minerals.

Come experience the WOW factor at the Unique Breeze Spa - Amari Hua Hin

For many centuries Thai people have used mango for its very special skinenhancing qualities and its sweet aroma. Still used today throughout the land, the mango is simply rubbed onto the skin, but because it leaves a sticky unsightly residue, Amari Breeze Spa has created a high class mango skin product that eliminates the aforementioned negatives whilst retaining all of its well recognised skin-enhancing qualities. The powders of Thai jasmine rice with its B and E vitamins and luxurious pearl with its world renowned mineral qualities are an integral part of the body scrub. The ingredients are mixed just prior to use so that the product is of optimal quality. Mango Body Scrub and Body Oil of vetiver, orange and mango are also available for to purchase for home use.

My two hour mood body scrub and massage was the most incredible experience ever. Normally it takes me some time to relax and settle into having a body scrub and massage but at the Amari Hua Hin Breeze Spa the light airy rooms and use of warmed conch seashells instantly transported me into another world. The very gentle, melodic sounds of the seaside immediately enabled me to drift into a place where everything was calm and peaceful. My highly trained technician attended to my well being in an unobtrusive respectful and caring manner, always with the highest regard for my privacy. The reflexology ear massage given to me, followed by the awareness of inhaling a uniquely created Breeze Spa - (I don’t know what she means) allowed me to reawaken gently at the conclusion of the

treatment. It was the best spa treatment, by the most highly trained and caring technicians, I’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing. What more can I say, other than to encourage each and every person to take the time to look after their bodies, minds and sousl here at the unique mood spa… treat yourself….you will be both amazed and delighted to be so well cared for by the wonderful staff at Amari Hua Hin Breeze Spa. This experience is not an indulgence it is rather a necessity in helping to take care of your personal wellbeing. A very big thank you to the Amari Hua Hin PR and Breeze Spa Staff. 032 616 600 – huahin@breeze-spa.com

Sukhothai Kingdom

60

Mar 15 - Apr 15 , 2015

E

veryone must have dreamt at some point in their lives to go and explore the ruins of an ancient city, or to the remains of what once was the heart of a glorious kingdom. The sensation of being within the confines of a former powerful medieval land is second to none; something that truly has the ability to take the mind back in time. Sukhothai figures as the first known capital of the ancient Kingdom of Siam, which in due time would become what we know today as the Kingdom of Thailand. It is characterised for its long history of greatness and the pride that springs from the all the figures that once ruled the country from that very province. The etymology of “Sukhothai” comes from ancient Sanskrit. The word Sukha means “happiness” something that shows us the great joy the province held during its formation. The word Udaya means “emergence” and it represent the rising of a prosperous land, which formerly grew larger by the day. The province of the “Dawn of Happiness” is therefore an iconic destination for those tourists who find out about its charm and cannot resist the temptation of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is hard to blame them, as the prospects it offers are very attractive for the holiday-maker, especially for those prefer an alternative to Thailand’s famous beach-side activities. Sukhothai is more about the pride held in the roots of its past and those who go visit the province are those who are truly in pusuite of the knowledge that this magical place hides. One of the proudest aspects of Sukhothai’s identity is that of their ancient kingdom’s second ruler, King Pho Khun Ramkamhaeng the Great – Don’t under any case attempt to mock him before a Thai person’s presence. Known commonly as Ramkamhaeng, the monarch not only helped his father conquer Sukhothai from the Khmer empire at age 19, but was so fierce in battle that he obtained his name which means “Rama the Bold” from there. He is very revered around Thailand and especially in this province because of his significant contribution to the roots of what today make up the nation’s identity and values: King Ramkamhaeng was the creator of the modern day Thai alphabet and was also responsible for the installation of Theravada Buddhism as the state religion on Thailand, this as we know, continues to be the case today. Sukhothai’s largest city is Sukhothai Thani, yet its population hardly reaches 36,000 people. This makes it peaceful and relaxing, and offers an opportunity to escape the crowds that usually form in Bangkok and other busy cities. It is located twelve kilometre’s to the east of the old city in ruins. The Sukhothai province in total only has 600,000 inhabitants, so their sparce allocation is good news for those who enjoy spaces with relatively few people. Mar 15 - Apr 15 , 2015

Mar 15 - Apr 15 , 2015

Getting to Sukhothai is very easy, as it is well connected and offers an array of transportation methods in and out: buses, trains and planes all go there from Thailand’s major cities for affordable rates. Plane trips are the most recent addition and flights are managed mostly by the low cost airline Nok Air. The airport is small but modern and it is located 30 kilometres away from the centre. Getting around Sukhothai is easy too, the songtaeo is a popular means of transport and it is cheap, but can get crowded very quickly. Once there, sightseeing is the first must-do activity. The morning is a good time to go, as the dawn’s sunlight paints a wonderful shade on the walls and statues. One can start at Sukhothai Muang Kao (Old Sukhothai), the famous ruins of the ancient capital. The beautiful archaic remains tell the story on their own: success, dominance and downfall are all represented at this site. The old city is impressive, yet heavy restoration projects undertaken at some of the locations must be taken into account: since the early 1960s, considerable conservation innitiatives were implemented in various sections of the ruins and as of today look spotless. However, if one ventures down the unmarked trails, remnants of original ruins can still be found. The National Historic Park within which the ruins are found extends across 70 square kilometres. It is for that reason that the most comfortable way to travel is in bycicle, since walking to all the points usually takes around 6 hours. A good place to start your cycling tour is Wat Mahathat. Wat Mahathat is the old city’s largest temple; it is located in the middle of the park’s enclosure, which represents prosperity. It has a main central Chedi, which is the pagoda’s temple, and it is shaped in the form of a lotus bud. There we find too, the figure of an eight metre Buddha, which provides the main attraction of the site. Another attractive place to visit is Wat Sri Chum: as you arrive and enter, you will be greeted by an enormous sitting Buddha, who will definitely take your breath away as a result of its grandeur and its majesty. If you happen to be around Sukhothai this coming Songkhran, you will find that the more religious part of the popular Thai festival is something that is highly valued. During the first day of the celebration, on the 12th of April, a ceremony is performed at the Historic Park by which a procession starting at Wat Phra Prang is ended there. During this march, an image of Buddha is paraded and water is poured over its head as it arrives to its destination. This is said to bring good luck and good forture,it also washes away bad omens that may have been accumulated throughout the year. Sukhothai offers too a range of museums,

such as the Kangkhalok Museum: this is a museum filled with a display of over 2,000 pieces of special ceramic pots that were brought in from a number of local and international locations. The Sawankhaworanayok National Museum is also an interesting place to visit. Across its two floors, the museum displays sculptures and different collections of ancient artifacts from a number of different periods of Sukhothai’s history. Once you’re out of breath from the cycle ride and the scenery, you can rent a motorbike and travel back to the new city to experience the local lifestyle and make your way to the fresh market. Tasty local foods of all flavours and textures await you there: Khanom Kliao is one of

them, made of wheat flour and egg, it is seasoned with salt and pepper before being twisted into a spiral form to make an elongated snack. Deep frying ensues and sugar is then added to provide a balance. Another similar and popular recipe is the butter baked banana snack, which is confectioned by using a horizontally sliced banana which is left to dry for half a day. It is then seasoned before deep frying and adding sugar. Sesame seeds top it off, giving it a great touch. Something worth trying too is the renowned local Sukhothai noodles, a dish that will certainly render your mouth watery. The best time to visit Sukhothai is between September and February, as this

is the season of less heat and it becomes most convenient for those who like to spend an entire day walking around in the Old City. If at the end of a tiring day you’re in need to find shelter for the night, Sukhothai offers a variety of budget and mid-range guest houses and resorts that are very reasonably priced, both in the new city and in the old city. Sukhothai is most definitely destined to provide the visitor with an unforgettable experience: be it through the mix between new and old Thai culture, through the amazing history of its ancient city or through the richness of its local markets and landmarks.

Bangkok’s Prime Restaurant

here’s no fine dining experience quite like the one you’ll have in a great steakhouse. In a world where most high-end restaurants tend to skew toward the precious and intricate, having a big slab of perfectly seared beef placed before you can make for a much-appreciated change of pace.

When you are in Bangkok and yearn for that perfect steak, head to the Chao Phraya River and search out the Millennium Hilton Hotel located along its banks. On the third floor of the Millennium Hilton you will find their steak restaurant Prime with an ambiance and view as remarkable as its cuisine. All of their steaks are either USDA approved Black Angus Beef, Australian 500 day grain fed Tajima Wagyu or Japanese Miyazaki Wagyu which have been aged to perfection and prepared over their unique wood burning grills.

All the cuts of meat you would expect from a fine steak house are on the menu from Fillet Mignon, to Porterhouse, New York, Rib Eye and even Prime Rib. For those desiring Surf and Turf there is also a complete collection of Seafood including Scottish Salmon, Alaska King Crab Legs and Maine Lobster. In typical Steak House fashion you are presented with fresh baked bread along with several butter spreads when first sitting down. Four soup offerings are available including Wild Mushrooms Cream & Bergamot and Creamy New England Clam Chowder. Salad’s at Prime include their PRIME Caesar Salad, Waldorf Salad and 3 others. Appetizers consist of Broiled Langoustine Tails, Grilled Hokkaido Sea Scallops, Seared Foie Gras, Duck Jus & “Xerez“ Glaze amongst others. Along with your meal they offer many

meat and fish sauces as well as potato and vegetable sides. For you Oenophiles (AKA wine connoisseurs) your heart will be warmed knowing you have over 3,000 bottles available to make your perfect choice for your meal. One of the big challenges of visiting a fine steakhouse is leaving room for desert. Here at Prime it shouldn’t be missed due their award winning Pastry Chef Urs Rohrbach who is the soul of all sweet creations at the Millennium Hilton. Prime Steakhouse regularly brings in Michelin Star guest chefs including Stephane Gaborieau from La Villa Florentine in Lyon France, the World Capital of Gastronomy. Before and/or after your dinner be sure to have a cocktail or three at the hotels rooftop 360 Lounge which offers indoor and outdoor seating. When there

you’ll want to try an “Isan Summer”. Bar Supervisor Khun Lersak Jamkadsin recently won the South East Asia Hilton Competition as Best Bartender with this flavorsome concoction made of ultrapremium Ron Zacapa 23 Rum, Thai tea syrup, fresh passion fruit, tangerine juice and kafir lime. Nightly entertainment is provided by American jazz singer Tabitha King Tuesday thru Sunday and famous Thai jazz guitarist Khun Prode Tanapat. The Millennium Hilton operates their own ferry boat running from 6:30 in the morning until midnight. They pick up at the Saphan Taksin BTS Sky Train station and the River City Shopping center. T

he word Sukhothai translates to “Dawn of Happiness”. As a guest of the 5 Star Sukhothai hotel in Bangkok for several days I can attest to waking up extremely happy each morning, although not at dawn. The beds are just too heavenly to wake up early, especially if you avail yourself of their pillow menu One of my first joyful surprises when checking in was that the Sukhothai employs their own chocolatier and upon entering my suite I was greeted with a tray of chocolate truffles. The Sukhothai has 210 rooms and suites and all incorporate rich Thai fabrics, teakwood furnishings and luxurious bathrooms. There are nine styles of rooms ranging from the Superior Room at 38 sqm’s to The Sukhothai Suite at 198 sqm’s. I stayed, and can highly recommend, the Executive Suite at 76 sqm’s. The bathroom is the size of most standard hotel rooms with his and her sinks, his and her wardrobes, a shower, a tub and a state of the art Japanese electronic toilet that automates all those dreary tasks when using the loo. While enjoying my first breakfast buffet at the Sukhothai, one of the wait staff brought over a small side table when he noticed that I had brought a newspaper, my tablet and my phone, which made the table somewhat crowded. The next morning at breakfast the side table was there as soon as I sat down. Another waiter had noticed that the day before I had stopped at the waffle station to place an order. This morning he stopped by my table to ask if he could put in a waffle order for me. The hostess knew my name and the way I liked my coffee. It’s a level of impeccable service that makes you feel instantly at home. In the afternoon I felt like working on my tan so I availed myself of their 25 meter infinity edge pool. The pool staff bring your towels and set up your chairs and umbrella for you. They also make sure your glass with ice and complementary water is never empty. A pool bar is nearby should you require something a little more potent. After a few hours pool-side I decided exercise was in order and headed to their well-appointed fitness center. your needs and to make sure you don’t run out of water when exercising. The hotel also boasts a tennis court and airconditioned squash courts for those so inclined. Dining and drinking options abound at the Sukhothai starting with the celebrated and award winning Celadon which serves an extensive menu of authentic Thai dishes. The Colonnade is their international restaurant while La Scala offers fine Italian dining. Additional eateries and drinkeries include the Salon, Pool Terrace Café & Bar, Thimian and The Zuk Bar. The Sukhothai spa is called Spa Botanica and they offer many signature spa treatments, all enjoyed while indulging in tranquil garden surroundings. Additional Spa amenities include a Jacuzzi, sauna and a steam room. They also offer a variety of fitness classes and personal trainers available on request. Although the hotel emanates luxury it is also all business. The Bussabong Business Centre offers meeting rooms of various sizes as well as a full suite of executive business services. A Private Dining Room is available when comfort and privacy are paramount and a spacious ballroom is available to host large corporate events as well as memorable weddings. The hotel is perfectly situated in the heart of Bangkok, near Lumpini Park and close to the sky train and subway. If you’re not the “public transportation” type then you’ll be delighted to know that the the hotel operates a fleet of luxury Mercedes limousines for safe and convenient transportation throughout the city. Jatujak Weekend Market

his month we check into Jatujak Market at the heart of Bangkok. Jatujak, also known as J.J. Market is one of the world’s largest weekend markets, open from 06:00 to 18:00; it is a perfect way to spend your Saturday and Sunday. Getting there is easy: one can go to the BTS’s Mo Chit station or take the MRT. Getting lost in there is easy too: 27 acres of land combined with half a million visitors every weekend makes maps an indispensable amenity when strolling around. Some however, prefer to get lost, as the 15,000 stalls grant plenty of opportunities to lose your notion of time and inmerse yourself in the deepest of shopping sprees. There are so many booths in Jatujak that the general shopper’s rule is to buy something if you like it – if you choose to come back later; chances are you might never find the place again. The stands are varied in nature: one can find clothes and accessories at very reasonable prices. Shirts, trousers, dresses, shoes, earrings, necklaces… you name it and Jatujak has it. It’s tempting to walk in, be enamoured by the first shop you see and buy everything in it, only to realize it is sold in a number of booths at lower prices. Thus, it’s advisable to walk around first to get a general feeling of what is common and what you should purchase upon mere sight. Jatujak also offers a great variety of food stalls, something that will delight those with hungry stomachs. One can find all different types of things to Mar 15 - Apr 15 , 2015

eat, and whilst Thai food is the most prominent, there are stalls that sell continental dishes such as German, Spanish and Italian foods. If smokers bother you during meals, you’re in for good news: Jatujak has been designated a smoke free zone throughout and fines for smoking go as high as 2,000 baht. Don’t be tempted! The Jatujak clock tower is a remarkable symbol of this now 60 year old market. Built in 1994, it was erected in honour of the king’s 60th birthday and has today become an iconic meeting place. If you ever do end up getting lost, look for the clock tower! Jatujak Market is must-visit for everyone. You will fall in love with the amount of stalls, products, accessories, food and dynamics. The place is inexpensive, but the desire gets you buying more than you originally thought you would. Just make sure you go there with plenty of time and plenty of money!
