Hostos: Stepping up in the Bronx Like the plum blossom that blooms in adversity, the South Bronx is showing its enduring spirit by excelling even through challenging times. We are the embodiment of the Ameri“can” spirit; that through trials to triumph we can succeed. From a single Bronx native; our first female Latina Supreme Court Justice, Sonia Sotomayor, to the team effort of the Yankees clinching the 27th World Series in baseball, we are proud to show the world that Bronx citizens have the capacity to rise up to the occasion and make it as great leaders. As a provider of higher learning and quality programs for our community, we are always conscious of the real-life situations of our population and how to address those needs to empower and enrich their skills to remain relevant in today’s market force. In recognition of our steadfast efforts, we were honored by the Continuing Education Association of New York (CEANY) for Best in Catalog, Best in Marketing, and the top prize of Outstanding Educator of 2009. We are extremely honored to receive such acclaim and will continue to provide exemplary services to the South Bronx. We invite you to join us for our 4 Open Houses where our friendly staff and knowledgeable instructors will be there to guide you through our diverse offerings to meet your educational needs.

Hit your home run at Hostos and be a part of the Bronx tale!

The Bronx Forum at Hostos Community College The Bronx Forum is a joint venture between Hostos Community College and the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York’s Commission on Intergroup Relations and Community Concerns / CAUSE-NY. The Forum convenes professional, lay, community and faith-based leadership of the Bronx, representing its diversity. These leaders come from the worlds of education, business, social service, government, health care as well as many other walks of life. The Bronx Forum will conduct a series of community wide roundtable discussions, seminars, workshops and an annual conference to empower community and faith-based leaders with the community organizing skills needed to support and serve the Bronx and its array of culturally diverse neighborhoods. For all professionals, community and faith-based leaders concerned with financial challanges in today’s economy:

Managing Government and City Grants Friday, February 26, 2010 Breakfast & Registration 8:30am Program 9:00am – 11:30am You put all of your efforts into researching for a grant, writing up an application, and then you receive that very special grant—now what? This training will teach you the skills you need to effectively manage government and city grants, as well as when it is appropriate to apply, what criteria should be in place, and what procedure to follow. See page 34 for Grant Writing Certificate Program.

Communicating Under Pressure Friday, April 9, 2010 Breakfast & Registration 8:30am Program 9:00am – 11:30am We all know that public speaking is an important skill, but what happens when a camera is placed in front of you? You never know when a story will break in your community and you will be pushed into the spotlight. This training will teach the skills needed to effectively communicate and articulate with ease, all while under the pressure of a camera, a press conference, or a special event. In addition, participants will learn the technique of creating an elevator speech. What happens when you get in an elevator with a major player in your field and only have 45 seconds until you reach the 35th floor to convey who you are and what you do? The elevator speech is an important tool for all professionals to have, allowing them to concisely and directly get their point across to better achieve their goals. Participants will have time to create and practice their own elevator speeches. See page 46 for Office Workshops.

For more information, contact Monica Merlis at mmerlis@jcrcny.org or call 212-983-4800 x122 Visit www.communityuplink.net for information on community events through New York City. All workshops will be held at the Savoy Building, Multi-Purpose Room:

This course is intended to prepare the student for the pragmatic tasks of the job. 35 hours.

Introduction to Alcoholism, Substance Abuse and the CASAC Program This course will touch on all of the material that will be covered in greater detail during the course of our program. We will look at the effect of substance abuse on the dynamics of the family and the psychological development of the children, and how those effects appear throughout life. We will examine the physical effect of substance abuse on the human body and various treatment modalities currently popular (and some that are not popular). Elements and Techniques of Counseling (Family) Part C We will examine the effect of alcohol and drug addiction on the family, significant others, coworkers, friends and associates of the still suffering alcoholic or addict. It has been reported that for every active alcoholic or drug addict six other people are affected in a meaningful way. When most of the attention in the field of addiction was focused on alcoholism those closest to the addicted person were called para-alcoholics. For the last fifteen years the use of other drugs among alcoholics has become so common that the term ‘alcoholic’ has been changed to ‘chemically dependent,’ and the term ‘para-alcoholic’ to ‘codependent.’ As the body of knowledge has grown, the definition of codependency has changed to acknowledge the fact that “para-alcoholics” do not become the people they are (with the signs and symptoms they display in abundance) because they marry alcoholics or become attached to the addict. Rather, they marry and became attached to sick, addicted people because they are originally codependent. The burgeoning body of knowledge emanating from the study of chemical dependency and codependency will be explored in this course. 35 hours. Alcoholism: A Primary Disease This course is designed for those whose experience and prior training has been focused on drugs other than alcohol. We will examine the role of alcohol in the history and development of the world, what has happened in the past, what is going on now and what we can expect in the future. Is there a rationale for the belief that the use and abuse of alcohol has helped shape our moral code and the national and international structure of our society? We will examine alcoholism vs. drunkenness, economic costs, alcoholism vs. alcohol dependence, Jellinek’s disease concept vs. just a bad habit, and the moral issue. We will study the etiology of alcoholism, alcohol dependence and modern screening methods. We will evaluate methods of treatment as well as compare and contrast mental status exams and psychosocial reports. 35 hours. M & W 6:00pm-9:30pm 2/8-3/15/10 ACE 2015-SP01 35 hrs. 10 sessions

Special Populations and Relapse Prevention We will examine the mysterious phenomenon of relapse (slips). Are there recognizable signs and symptoms that precede the relapse and in fact may cause it? Can we develop a treatment plan that would foresee the upcoming relapse and prevent it? We will consider the treatment utilized at several rehabilitation centers that specialize in the treatment of chronic “relapsers.” We will also consider whether chronic relapsers are indeed a special population of substance abusers and if a special treatment plan needs to be formulated for them. We will also look into the plight of other special populations, such as Military Personnel, Native Americans, women, teenagers, the homeless, and “the rich and famous” and consider their particular problems with alcoholism and substance abuse. We will also explore the connection between the various methodologies of treatment and incidence of relapse as well as how treatment planning, evaluation and screening can prevent relapse. 35 hours. The MICA Patient In this course aspects of the treatment of substance abuse, alcoholism and mental illness will be investigated. This confusing co-mingling of signs and symptoms between these illnesses will be investigated and examined. Alcoholism and substance abuse can mimic forms of mental disease and result in the wrong diagnosis and therefore the wrong treatment. Elements covered will include: the use of the DSP IV, the psychiatric disorders commonly associated with substance abuse and alcoholism, overlapping disorders, mood disorder, personality disorders, societal and treatment ramifications of the problems, psychotic disorders and various treatment paths. 35 hours. Medical, Biological, Physiological & Pharmacological Aspects of Substance Abuse and Alcoholism This course will look at the physical effects of alcoholism and substance abuse on the human body, including F.A.E. as well as STD and HIV. We will focus on the nature of the drugs (including alcohol) and the effects on the abusers and on the children born to addicted parents. The signs and symptoms of chemical dependency and the synergistic effect of mixed drugs will also be examined. The plight of the Mentally III Chemically Addicted (MICA) patient will be considered with the knowledge that substance abuse often mimics or conceals mental illness. The fact that alcoholism and substance abuse affect the entire being (body, mind and emotions), qualifying them as mental illnesses will be explored in this course. 35 hours. Elements and Techniques of Counseling (Individual) Part A We will examine the various theories, modalities and techniques currently in use in the field of addictions. We will also look at history of treatment: the early efforts to understand the obsession and compulsions associated with addictions, where the body of knowledge started and where it is today. We will come to understand how the knowledge accumulated through the treatment of alcoholism and drug addiction has affected the entire field of mental health. Our main thrust in this course will be the theoretical rationale for counseling (both individual and group therapy). Here we will study the nature of personality disorder, the history of their classification and how chemical use and dependency can mask and mimic them.
