INDEPENDENT GARDEN CENTRES ARE

BUZZING WITH BEE FRIENDLY PLANTS GARDEN CENTRES GET CREATIVE WITH THEIR PLANTSOMETHING BEE FRIENDLY DISPLAYS

It’s a fact, bees love flowers. But not all flowers provide high enough levels of pollen or nectar to keep a bee happy. When you’re a gardener, it can be difficult to know which plants are the most ‘Bee Friendly’ for your garden.

Watch for BC garden centres' ‘PlantSomething Bee Friendly’ displays that creatively showcase pollinator friendly plants. These displays allow gardeners to easily identify bee friendly plants without having to research the plants themselves. Independent garden centres hand select plants to provide locally grown, quality plants in their stores and are locally owned and operated by families passionate about plants. Their knowledgeable staff can help you find suitable plants for your yard and the solutions to your gardening problems. Visit PlantSomethingBC.ca to find an independent garden centre in your area.

GARDENING IN A CHANGING CLIMATE

TIPS FOR A DROUGHT FRIENDLY GARDEN BY NIALL WIMSEY, CEDAR RIM NURSERY As we have noticed, our summers have been getting increasingly drier. This puts many plants under stress and can lead to further issues, such as disease or even death.

Using drought tolerant plants is not only better for the environment but requires less care and attention. Establishing plants correctly to begin with is the first step to ensuring the long term health of a plant. Watering is the number one reason why plants do not get off to a good start. When planting, always incorporate some fresh potting soil and bone meal into the hole and water the hole before planting. It’s also beneficial to water the plant first before planting.

Using a soaker hose a few times a week for an hour will encourage a deeper root system to establish and help alleviate issues arising from drought. This is more efficient than wetting the soil surface down quickly by hand, keeping the roots near the surface and increasing stress during drought. Mulching around plants with also help lock-in moisture and reduce the amount of water you need to use. TOP 10 DROUGHT TOLERANT PLANTS:

1 Lavender 2 Perovskia 3 Passionflower 4 Euphorbia 5 Abelia x grandiflora 6 Pennisetum alopercuroides 7 Panicum virgatum 8 Sedum 9 Rudbeckia 10 Echinacea Talk with your local nursery or garden center to get more ideas that are suitable for your area and help support local businesses and jobs.

NO EFFORT TOO SMALL TIPS FOR SMALL-SPACE POLLINATOR GARDENING BY KEVIN CRAMER, BLOOMIN’ EASY PLANTS THINK SMALL

Pollinator friendly options exist in every plant category and fit even the smallest outdoor spaces. Whether you have a backyard or a balcony, it’s easy to find plants that work for you. In fact, the amount of sun your space gets is more important than square footage. The experts in your local garden centres are happy to help you find beautiful pollinator plants that fit your space. PLANT FOR EVERY SEASON

Ideally your garden will provide pollen and nectar from Spring to Fall. Look for flowering times mentioned on the tag to help you organize. And don’t worry about finding everything in one trip; visit throughout the season to choose what suits your taste and blooms in the current or upcoming season. The bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds will thank you for providing a continuous energy source. A PLACE TO CALL HOME

Pollinators that don’t migrate will need shelter over winter. Bee houses have become popular DIY projects and a quick Google search will offer plenty of building guides. By giving your pollinator friends a place to call home, their numbers and quality of life will grow. BIOGRAPHY

Kevin has a passion for pollinators and the great outdoors. He’s also the marketing manager at Bloomin’ Easy. Engage with him @bloomineasy Looking for easy care options? Bloomin’ Easy offers low-maintenance, pollinator-friendly plants that fit smaller spaces. Visit bloomineasyplants.com to learn more about their collection.

BC AGRICULTURE IN THE CLASSROOM INTRODUCES STUDENTS TO GARDENING It’s buzzing at BC Ag In The Classroom as we prepare for 458 schools to receive their seed potatoes, bins, soil and handbook. Yes, it is launch time for Spuds in Tubs, one of our Growing Programs, and we’re getting our hands dirty. By working with educators, our non-profit organization, BC Agriculture in the Classroom Foundation, plants seeds of understanding offering growing programs, and a broad cross section of learning resources for all grade levels and subjects.

Besides Spuds in Tubs, we offer the Harvest Bin Project where students monitor, experiment, grow and tend to their raised garden beds. At harvest they can prepare and taste nutritious, local food nurtured by their own hands. Other classes can tour the Pencil Patch Garden, our outdoor classroom, learning about seeds, soil, water, pollinators, conservation and sustainability at the fourteen activity stations in April and May. Hands-on, place based, experiential learning are the hallmarks of our growing programs. Providing teachers with engaging lessons and activities make programs like ‘Planting a Promise’ come to life. Witnessing young students discover the lifecycle of the daffodil, dissect bulbs, and watch with wonder as the bulbs spring forth heralding a display of sunshine brightens and beautifies the school community, and makes learning memorable. When asked ‘what did you learn at school today?,’ we hope students brim with stories and this sharing will encourage us all to appreciate the value of agriculture in our community.

The commitment of our staff, and board, the generosity of our donors, and the spirit of our volunteers further our mandate. We welcome your support.

Use the checklists on the website and make sure you are hiring the right company for the job before you sign the contract. Use the website to receive quotes from landscapers who abide by the BC Landscape and Nursery Association’s Code of Ethics. Your ‘due diligence’ at the start can save a headache in the end.

RAIN GARDENS AND LOW IMPACT DESIGN GARDENS ONE OF THE NEWEST TRENDS IN GARDEN DESIGN IS ALSO A GREAT ENVIRONMENTAL PLUS BY ANNE KULLA, CLT, HUCKLEBERRY LANDSCAPE DESIGN Many would say that living in the Lower Mainland is sometimes like living in a rain garden. On average the Vancouver area receives just over one metre of rain every year. Low Impact Development (LID) is a landscape design strategy which helps mitigate flooding from rainwater and limit chemicals and nutrients getting into our waterways through rain gardens, bio-swales, green roofs and permeable pavement. A rain garden is a form of storm water management. The rain water falls and flows into our storm drains and streams, and eventually into the ocean, taking oils and chemicals from vehicles and other waste with it. Our storm drain systems are reaching capacity due to the increase in unique weather events in the past few years, our increase in population, as well as our aging infrastructure. To mitigate the cost of repairs and upgrades, governments across the country are searching for ways to reduce the amount of water going into our drainage systems. Federal, provincial and local governments are implementing new bylaws, restrictions and taxes in an effort to keep water out of the drains. One simple, low cost and effective solution is to build rain gardens. They are a deep garden bed with a layer of topsoil planted with a variety of plants that can survive periods of wet feet during the winter and spring, and dry feet during the summer (think water restrictions). A rain garden placed at the bottom of a slight down-slope can capture water from driveways, patios, walkways and other hard surfaces, allowing the water to slowly absorb into the ground. Even the downspouts from your roof top can be re-routed towards a rain garden, further reducing the amount of water going into your storm drains. Continued on next page...

RAIN GARDENS AND LOW IMPACT DESIGN GARDENS (CONTINUED) The designs for rain gardens are limitless, as each one is unique to the individual landscape setting. The location, shape, size and style of garden will change depending on the homeowner’s personal style and tastes. Different mulches, different plants and different locations all go towards making that rain garden one of a kind and unique.

Rain gardens are effective and beneficial because they lower the amount of water flowing into our storm drain systems, reducing some of your home’s water usage costs and by increasing your property value by adding a beautiful landscape. The bonus is that you are helping the environment by keeping harmful chemicals and waste out of our rivers and oceans. If you need assistance designing your rain garden, call a professional landscaper to help ensure you have the correct location and plants for your home.
