About Pollination What is Pollination? Pollination is the process of transferring the male part of the plant (pollen) to the female part of the plant (Pistil), which completes fertilization, thus enabling the plant to produce fruit or vegetables. Pollination may be abiotic, where pollination occurs without the involvement of other organisms, or biotic, where other organisms called pollinators transport the pollen grains from the anther to the pistil. About 80% of all plant pollination is biotic. Many plants require cross-pollination, where pollen is delivered from the flower of one plant to the flower of another plant. Cross-pollination helps at least 30 percent of the world’s food crops and 90 percent of our wild plants to thrive.

Who are the Pollinators? Pollinators are animals, usually insects, but may also be birds, mammals, or reptiles. The transport of pollen is usually the result of their activities, such as visiting plants for feeding. Plants attract their preferred pollinators through brightly coloured petals, scent, and nectar & pollen which provide a source of food. Up until about one hundred years ago, there were enough wild bees and other insects in the world to pollinate virtually all of the food crops being planted. Today, however, because of intensive agricultural practices, and a sharp decline in the number of wild bees, there simply are not nearly enough wild insect pollinators to effectively pollinate our crops.

Planting a Bee Friendly Container Garden with Children Dirt + Plants = BUZZZzzzzzzzz Gardening and kids are a natural fit. With some simple guidelines for handling plants and soil, a bee-utiful garden can be a fun activity. Supplies: 1. A Container 2. Soil for planting 3. Plants 4. Small rocks or gravel for drainage for the bottom of the container 5. Plant food 6. A shallow scoop or dish to hold water. A couple of big spoons and play clothes are all the garden equipment your kids need! Making the Garden Start with a container that will fit your space with a drain hole. A container is important; make sure you provide the dimensions to your garden centre helper. They will help you find the right number and size of plants to create the perfect bee friendly garden. Try mixing and matching these plants – choose the flower and leaf colours combinations that make you happy. Flowering Plants - Lavender - Gaillardia - Penstamen - Asclepius - Heather

Fruiting Plants - Raspberries - Blueberries - Currants - Small fruit tree, an apple or a pear

Herbs - Oregano - Fennel - Thyme

Place one inch (5 cm) of rocks on the bottom of your container. Place soil in the container, leaving room for the plants. Organize your plants in the container with the pots still on so you can see how they will look the best. Smaller plants go in the front and around the edges, larger ones in the back or middle. Space them evenly in the container; explain that plants need room for the air to move around them. Take the plants out of their pots and position them in the container as you like. Add soil to bring them up so the top of the soil in the pots matches the top of the soil in the container. Tuck soil in around the plants to give them support. Water the plants so the soil fills in well around the plants. Top up with more soil if necessary, so the soil is even in the pot. EXTRA! Set a small scoop or spoon into the soil, so it is flat and just above the level of the soil. Keep it filled with water ‘cause bees are always looking for fresh clean drink. Check the plants daily to see if they need water by poking your finger into the soil. If it feels damp, don’t water, but if it feels dry, then water. Look for Garden Centres participating in the PlantSomething Bee Friendly program for great information about bees and plants you will love to have in your garden. www.LandscapeBC.com - 9

Effects of Cold Weather on Landscapes This winter the temperature in Metro Vancouver dropped to a frigid -10 degrees Celsius. As a result, some of the plant material in your landscape may have been damaged. Plants are rated by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) to tolerate certain temperatures; this is the authority that is mentioned on every plant label that comes from a nursery. Vancouver is classed as a Zone 8a to 8b climate. Some plants, although rated as being suitable for our region, are proving to be unreliable with colder than average winters such as this year’s, thus causing widespread damage to plants. California lilac (Ceanothus), creeping raspberry (Rubus calycinoides), heavenly bamboo (Nandina), and Escallonia are just a few of the plants that are showing signs of winter stress like severe defoliation or complete failure. Furthermore, soil saturation, microclimate and variety also play a role in the plant’s hardiness. The snowfall has caused other damage because some plants could not sustain the heavy weight of the snow and freezing ice for such a long period of time. Tree limb loss and hedge splaying are clear evidence of the damage caused by the heavy snowfall this winter. Magnolia varieties, Liquidamber, and Cercis Canadensis are some of a few trees that became particularly weak once the snowpack was sitting on them, resulting in broken limbs. In most cases we are able to clean up the wound on the tree with corrective cuts. However, in some cases there are trees that have received extensive damage, in which case removal and replacement may be necessary. Cedar hedges are very susceptible to splaying when poorly pruned. Cedars that are pruned to make the top portion the widest part of the hedge will begin to fall over and split when the snowfall becomes too great. Hedges should be pruned in a pyramidal shape which has two benefits. First, the shape being tapered at the top creates a smaller surface area for snow to accumulate on, therefore better protecting it from splaying under the weight. Second, pruning in this method allows more daylight to reach the base of the hedge, therefore promoting healthy foliage growth which in turn looks more aesthetically pleasing. How to Hire a Landscaper By Jeff Foley, Para Space Landscaping Inc.

By Jeff Foley, Para Space Landscaping Inc. With over 2,400 landscapers in British Columbia, how do you know you are hiring the right company? Below are some questions to ask to ensure that you’re hiring a professional.

Ask to see a portfolio of their work - It is always good to see a portfolio of a

landscaper’s work and ask for current and past client references. Visiting one of their projects will give an even better idea of the service product they are selling.

Ask what accreditation their staff hold - Internationally recognized, the

Landscape Industry Certified Technician accreditation proves competency through written and hands-on testing. Other accreditations to look for are Certified Arborists and Irrigation Technicians. Landscape Horticulturist is a Red Seal Trade so you may want to request a journeyperson to be on site as well.

Ask how long has the company has been in business - The age of a business

doesn’t always tell you about the quality of their work, however, a long-established company indicates that the business has been successful over time. This may be a way to weed out a fly-by-night operation.

Ask about membership with BC Landscape & Nursery Association (BCLNA) - Being a member

of a professional association often means that the company has agreed to abide by a set of professional standards or code of conduct and ethics.

Ask if the work will be done in accordance with the new

Canadian Landscape Standard - The Canadian Nursery Landscape Association

and the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects released the Canadian Landscape Standard (CLS) First Edition. The CLS is a single, authoritative resource for landscape construction projects across Canada. For the first time, there is a national guideline to set the standard of landscape work in every province across the country.

Ask if there is a product warranty - Plants are living organisms and rarely have a 100 per cent success rate. However, credible companies should warranty all plant material for one year, subject to adequate maintenance of plants.

Ask for a certificate of liability insurance - If it’s an extended job, make sure that you are added onto their policy as an additional insured and notified of cancellation/material changes within 30 days. Coverage of $5 million is preferred these days.

Ask if the company in good standing with WorkSafe BC – Make sure that the

landscaping company is in good standing with WorkSafeBC. You can easily find a clearance letter on the WorkSafe BC website.

Ask for awards - Awards are a great way to vet a company, as their work has been professionally judged to a high standard.

Ask what work will be subcontracted - Ensure that your general contractor is

familiar with all subcontractors. It is also advisable to ask many of the above questions of subcontracted companies working on your property. A final word of caution is to ensure you have a signed contract that outlines the scope of work in detail. This will ensure clarity between you and the company you hire and will be helpful should there be any disputes over the project. Jeff Foley CLP, CLT is the Executive Vice President of Para Space Landscaping Inc. Para Space has won numerous awards for their landscape maintenance and installation and in 2011 was honoured as one of B.C.’s best companies to work for.
