Now it’s Geoff MBE!

Mobile firm seeking military veterans Armed Forces veterans will have a unique chance to forge new careers thanks to a Bristol mobile phone company. Square One, based in Horfield, is setting up a second company, F-Network Ltd – effectively a mirror image of their core business – but it will be staffed by former military personnel, some of whom will Turn to Page 17

Horfield had a very good reason to celebrate the New Year as the news emerged that Geoff Stock had been awarded an MBE in the New Years’ Honours List for his services to young people and the community in Horfield. Geoff has run the Horfield Young Peoples Club for 42 years since its opening on 25th January 1975. He can easily recall the event

which gave him the idea in the first place. He said: “I was at a social event at the old St Edmunds Church when I went outside for a breather. While I was there a group of teenagers approached me and asked if they could go inside. I couldn’t let them as they didn’t have a ticket but it was as a result of that request that a group of us got together and decided we

wanted to set up a young people’s club”. Around 32 young people attended the opening session, largely from the Manor Farm Estate. Geoff wanted it to be an open club so that it could be of benefit to the whole community. In no time at all the number of young people attending had Turn to Page 2

The Horfield and Lockleaze Voice are very aware that a story is breaking about the Lockleaze Community Association Club which is situated in Romney Avenue next door to St James Church. The members-only club closed its doors for the last time in the early hours of New Years Day. At the time of writing (a little more than two weeks ago) very little in the way of facts are known. The future of the club is very uncertain and it is very important that the building is kept open for community use. A full report will follow in next month’s Horfield and Lockleaze Voice.

reached 76 which led to the group having to be split into two, Juniors and Seniors. Geoff can recall many events over the years. The Evening Post advertised that a Boys Club from Dundee were in Bristol and were looking for a game of football, at exactly the same time as he was looking to start a football team up. The game went ahead and the money raised from it funded the purchasing of his teams kit. They put on variety shows for the community for the benefit of organisations such as Avon Swifts, a Horfield-based disabled sports club who have sent athletes to the Paralympics. Geoff became very involved with the Saving the Field campaign on Wellington Hill but typically gives all the credit for the campaign’s success to Sam Thomson of the Friends of Horfield Common. He recalls with fondness the parties the club put on for the Jubilee in 2012 when they had 100 people

at the hall enjoying an oldfashioned sing-a-long. A sponsored walk is done every year to support such organisations as Shelterbox, Hawkspring, Claremont School Hydrotherapy Pool, a bone marrow appeal for Yvette Gale who sadly lost her battle for life, and the Julian Trust. Today the Horfield Young Peoples Club takes young people up to the age of 12, they then progress to Helper Leaders and some have even gone on to become Adult Helpers. Geoff has also paid tribute to Hilary Blanchard, the Club’s Chaplain and to Parish Priest John Hadley for their support. In the future he would like to explore link-ups with other areas. Geoff says: “I couldn’t quite believe it when I found out. I’m a very ordinary chap and the club has been part of my life for 42 years now.” The Club meet at Horfield Parish Church Hall on Wellington Hill on Fridays between 6.15 and 8pm.

Delight as road crossing finally installed A new pedestrian crossing in Kellaway Avenue has finally been completed. This crossing which is situated at the Horfield Common end of the avenue was initially proposed as a scheme by the Neighbourhood Partnership Traffic and Transport group in 2011 based on reports from local residents to the Neighbourhood Partnership and Highways. The Partnership agreed to fund £5801 to carry out a feasibility study on the crossing in March 2012. Following this study the Partnership applied for and were granted £21,000 of funding from the Government’s Local Sustainable Transport Grant (LSTG) in October 2012. Claire Hiscott, councillor for Horfield says, “After nearly two years of campaigning for this crossing to be installed we are finally seeing the fruit of our efforts! “A big thank you to all residents who campaigned with

me and kept the pressure on the council to deliver. “After so many delays I am delighted to see this crossing finally completed. It is a major

new road safety asset for the community, especially for children and families crossing to get to school at the most busy times of day.

“I have had so many people already contact me to say how delighted they are to finally have the crossing in place. A great good news story for Horfield!”

Let’s find out what Lockleaze needs Lockleaze Neighbourhood Trust, which is based in the Hub, is supporting local residents and organisations to carry out a community research project to find out what Lockleaze residents need to be a flourishing successful community, and to find out what skills, time or passions people can contribute to make it happen. The research will be used to direct the work of people in the area, to inform developments and to get external investment. Funding for this project has been affected by the Council’s spending freeze, but the trust is going to do it anyway. Do you have the time to help your community? The trust are looking for people who wouldn’t mind asking their friends and neighbours, even people you bump into, questions about our community here in Lockleaze. Training will be provided for anyone who wants to make a difference in Lockleaze and doesn’t mind asking a few questions. If you can help please get in touch with Suzanne Wilson at suzanne@lockleazent.co.uk or alternatively call into the Hub.

n FOCUS on North Bristol Food Bank

Working tirelessly to give families help in time of need

Back in August 2012, North Bristol Foodbank was established when people from Ebenezer Church (on Filton Avenue in Horfield) and Filton Community Church (who run Revive Charity Shop on Filton) continued to see a huge need in the local community with people they were working with long term. People were struggling to feed themselves and their families when a crisis came along. This could be an unexpected bill, benefits sanction, funeral costs, sudden loss of employment or numerous other reasons. North Bristol Foodbank provides emergency food and support to people in crisis in Lockleaze, Horfield, Southmead and into South Gloucestershire.

We receive clients referred by frontline professionals such as social workers, health visitors, tenant support officers from housing associations, family support teams in schools, and many others. Once referred, the person in need comes along to one of our four outlets (including St James Church, Lockleaze and Ebenezer Church, Horfield) to receive bags of food providing nutritionally balanced food for three meals a day for a three day period. We also signpost people on to other useful local services. This includes support giving locally by close partnerships like North Bristol Advice Centre and the many services they provide. There is still a noticeable

demand for Foodbank use in the UK for people in need receiving emergency food parcels. Our local Foodbank (which is one of 3 Trussell Trust foodbanks in Bristol + other independent foodbanks) is still seeing a high demand as we have given three day food supplies out 2,397 times from April 2016 – November 2016, compared with 2,189 times during the previous year. Stewart North (founder and chairman of North Bristol Foodbank) – “It is all too easy when you look at figures to forget the real people behind the statistics. Very often, our volunteers listen to stories from those referred to the foodbank that are heart-breaking to hear and have provide emotional support and encouragement, during really tough times. That’s why the foodbank is so vital. We are very grateful for the ongoing support of the community, and hope that one day there will be no need for us in Bristol. But until that day comes, we will continue to offer the best possible service to help local people facing a crisis.” Recently North Bristol Foodbank were able to hold a three day supermarket collection at Tesco Lime Trees Rd in Horfield (see attached picture) where 1,895kg of food was donated by generous customers. It was great to have local corporate volunteer teams (from TSB Bank) and volunteers from the community to help make this

happen. Many of these donations were used to make up 160 Christmas hampers for people nominated by the Foodbank’s voucher referral agencies who because of difficult circumstances would not otherwise have been able to afford any nice treats at Christmas time. Jon Dobson (Foodbank manager) says– “It has been amazing to see the generous response from the local community wanting to help those who have been struggling at Christmas time. “From people donating food through our supermarket collections, or through their schools and businesses; to teams from Merlin Housing Society and Co-op helping pack our hampers, it has been great to see the community come together to help those on the margins. We have already been hearing about the impact our Christmas hampers are having (see attached picture) so we are sincerely grateful to all those that have supported us throughout the year.” In 2017 the North Bristol Foodbank will be exploring further ways in which people at risk of food poverty can be supported, through cooking and budgeting courses and additional help around saving money on energy bills. The Foodbank is looking to provide ‘More than food’ in their approach to tackling food poverty in North Bristol.

What a ‘lot’ charity has got! Last week Home Start Bristol received a wonderful start to the New Year when they were presented with a cheque for £4,000 from Bristol auctioneer and estate agent Hollis Morgan. During 2016 Home Start Bristol was the company’s ‘Charity of the Year’ and the cheque was the result of staff fundraising activities. Home Start Bristol Scheme Manager, Beverley Symonds says, “We are so grateful to Hollis Morgan for all their support over the year. It’s a fantastic amount that will help us to continue supporting struggling families during 2017”. Home Start Bristol has helped hundreds of families in its 30 years working in Bristol and South Gloucestershire. The charity recruits and trains volunteers who then befriend a family and visit them once a week for 2-3 hours. Most volunteers are parents, or grandparents,

themselves. The next volunteer training course starts in April. If you would like to get involved in anyway, please call 0117 950 1170 l As the government announces plans to transform attitudes to mental health, Home-Start Bristol’s new project aims to improve the emotional health of parents and children.

Last year 83% of Bristol parents who felt isolated told the charity that they were also experiencing mental health problems. With over 30 years’ experience of supporting families, Home-Start understands the impact of depression and anxiety - especially if coupled with

isolation. It is often a vicious circle that is hard to break out of alone. Scheme Manager, Beverley Symonds, says: “We work alongside families, encouraging them and helping them to build confidence. This type of support benefits both children and parents, increasing their sense of wellbeing and ability to manage”. Of 182 Bristol families supported recently over 94% felt better able to cope as a result of this support. If you would like to find out more about the charity, make a donation or become a HomeStart Bristol volunteer, visit the website: www.homestartbristol. org.uk or phone 0117 9501170.

Play takes us back to Lockleaze in the 70s

Its 1979, rubbish is on the streets of Lockleaze, and growing up is tricky for Fiz, Higgy and Ginger. Rick remembers what its like to be a teenager. So when he decides to build a junk playground, he’s pretty sure he has the charisma to get a bunch of reluctant kids involved. He’s wrong. Inspired by the true story behind the Lockleaze playground known as “The Vench”, created over 30 years ago and still in play today. Junkyard is a story about Bristol, for Bristol from BAFTA Award winning writer and Bristolian Jack Thorne (This is England, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) and Academy award winning composer Stephen Warbeck (Shakespeare in Love). Directed by Evening Standard award-winning director Jeremy Herrin (Wolf Hall), this brilliantly honest and witty new musical - being performed later this month - is a coming of age story about friendship and standing up for what matters. The Horfield and Lockleaze Voice were lucky enough to have a chat with Lisa Palfrey who plays “Mum” in the show. Lisa says, “It is a brilliant piece of writing and it is great to be part of a story that has already happened. You get the truth

about the story and it is good to meet people that came here”. Lucy Hunt is leading the project at Bristol Old Vic :”It is great to be meeting the people of Lockleaze through this project and finding ways to work together. It is really important that the whole city recognise that Bristol Old Vic is their theatre and see their histories and stories reflected on our stages. I am looking forward to inviting new audiences in to see Junkyard and seeing what we can do together after the show!’ Peter Woods-Wetton of LPW added, ““LPW welcomed Bristol Old Vic Staff and the Junkyard Actors into the Vench. It was great to see and hear more about the play. The actors and director even stayed behind after their photo shoot to do some acting workshops with our Lad’s Group.” In 1972 Lockleaze Adventure Playground ‘The Vench’ was opened by comedy legend John Cleese and the photograph we published last month was taken. Looking for a musical hobby?

You’ve watched “The Choir” with Gareth Malone – you know that singing is good for you, good for your brain, and your health – now make it a reality this year! Join The Filtones in Horfield and experience the joy of singing with a group of like minded, sociable people who will welcome you with open arms. We are looking to recruit new voices. Age is of no importance – many of our members are in their eighties – just shows you how it does you good! We do, however, rehearse on Wednesday afternoons from 1.45 to 3.45 p.m. at Eden Grove Methodist Church, Eden Grove, Horfield , so you would need to be available then, but it’s much nicer than having to go out in the dark evenings isn’t it! The ability to

read music is not essential as we can supply special CDs which will help you learn by listening, but you will be surprised at how much knowledge of music you can pick up in the process and how good that is for making new connections in those old grey cells! We have an excellent conductor who has the patience of a saint so if you have never sung in four part harmony before, you need never feel intimidated as we all will understand if you find it difficult at first – many of us experienced this when we started. Why not give it a try? What have you to lose? Our current membership comes from all parts of Bristol and even Yate, so there’s a chance that, if you

would find it difficult to reach us by public transport, one of us might be able to give you a lift. n MEET OUR DECISION MAKERS Cllr Gill Kirk, Lockleaze Could I make a special plea this month for residents to complete the Stoke park consultation, advertised in this magazine, which runs until February 20th. You will see postcards and reminders in various locations around the area, including Buzz Cafe. Pick up a card or check on Facebook and fill in the online questionnaire. As we go about seeking extra funding to improve our park, it makes so much difference if local people and park users are actively involved and engaged in telling us how they use the park, and how they want to see it improve in the future. We need to hear from all ages and all varieties of park users: walkers, runners, fitness enthusiasts, dog walkers, photographers and wildlife

experts. Tell us how you use the park and why it’s important to you? How could we make it more accessible for those with mobility or sensory problems? Perhaps you have lived all your life in Lockleaze but do not really know much about this lovely green space on your doorstep? There is not a lot of signage to help people find their way in or around the park, and many do not know what is available to enjoy there. We want to make sure that changes and that everyone can get the best out of Lockleaze’s greatest outdoor asset. For example, some people if they live on their own may not feel confident walking in an outdoor space alone, but might perhaps like to join a walking

group ? How could young people get more use from the space.... some of our more mature residents probably remember being out all day exploring the fields and woods, are the younger generation missing out on these pleasures? Do get involved in the volunteers group Friends of Stoke Park, (our very relaxed and informal meetings will be advertised throughout the year.) If you would prefer to make a paper response to the consultation rather than online, pop in to the Hub, Gainsborough Square, to see the display boards and fill in a short form with your comments. Many thanks! Councillor advice surgeries on the Move! We are going to be holding our drop in advice surgeries in different locations around Lockleaze to make it easier for people to come and chat to us if they want to, including in Schools, Childrens

Centres, Libraries and Cafes. We will also be holding street surgeries when we visit a particular cluster of streets, advertised a few days ahead, and you can put a note in your window if you would like us to knock on your door and speak to you. We will be advertising these through the year. In the near future we will be available at: Advice and Guidance Family drop-in session at Filton Ave nursery weds 22nd February, 2-4pm, Councillor drop-in advice session: Buzz cafe, Gainsborough square, 4-5.30pm on Friday March 24th. Please come and see us to chat about any concerns, ideas or suggestions about how we can improve things in Lockleaze! a score by an Oscar-winning composer, Stephen Warbeck. As well as being staged at the Bristol Old Vic the play will tour other parts of the country, making sure that the names of both Lockleaze and the ‘Vench’ will become familiar well beyond Bristol’s boundaries. I know that the Old Vic team are keen to make sure Lockleaze residents (and especially those who remember or were part of this history) get to see the play, and are working hard to publicise it. It’s running from February 24th to March 18th. In real life the Vench continues to provide outdoor play space for local young people

as well as indoor facilities, and is a vital local asset. Gill Kirk and I have worked hard to help put it onto a stable footing since it ceased to be run by the city council, and I am now chairing the Steering Committee that oversees it. The Vench has also had a facelift. A lot of work has been done over the last twelve months by Groundwork and Learning Partnership West to improve the facilities and add some exciting new play features, and more are planned. I want to make sure the next generation of local young people can enjoy it just as much as previous generations have done. See more on Page 9

doing for our young people. Its always a pleasure to see the creative ways our schools are improving learning. As a UNESCO Learning city, Bristol is working towards ensuring our schools have good links with local business and our young people have access to quality work experience, I am pleased to report that we will be offering our young people more opportunities this year and that we have just been awarded the

UNESCO Learning City award. Finally another piece of good news is the launch of free ‘Turn up and play’ football training on the new 3G pitches at the Horfield Leisure Centre on Friday evenings. This is aimed at ages 11-18 and I would like to thank both the Leisure centre and Bristol Rovers for starting this from 27th Jan 6-8pm. Can I encourage everyone with keen footballing children to try this out!

Cllr Estella Tinknell, Lockleaze Who would have imagined that an adventure playground in Lockleaze would end up on the stage of Bristol’s Old Vic Theatre? Well, it’s happened! Since May I have been talking to each and every cultural venue or group that has even a small amount of public funding, challenging them to be more visible and inclusive. I’m therefore delighted that Bristol Old Vic Theatre has taken up this challenge – and in a way that will put Lockleaze on the national map. The theatre is putting on a

show inspired by the early history of Lockleaze’s very own ‘Vench’ Adventure Playground in February this year, and it’s a very special production. Set in 1979, ‘Junkyard’ tells the story of Fiz, Higgy, Ginger and their leader, Rick, who together build a junk playground in a corner of Lockleaze’s Stoke Park. The play is written by Bristolian Jack Thorne, who also scripted episodes of This Is England, and wrote the screenplay for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and it has

Cllr Claire Hiscott, Horfield The new Year has started with the long awaited opening of the new Kellaway Avenue zebra crossing - a big thank you to all residents have campaigned to ensure it went ahead! I am sure also that residents are glad to have the several new bus shelters that have been built to protect us from the winter

wind and rain around Horfield (and the odd flurry of snow), my thanks again to residents who have helped shape some of the designs. As cabinet member for Education and Skills I have been delighted to visit Orchard school and Stoke Park primary and see the great work they are

Marvin Rees, Bristol’s mayor

By now many Voice readers will have had the chance to review the council’s new budget proposals and updates to the draft Corporate Strategy launched in January. These documents outline how we propose funding top priorities for the city including my seven key commitments and vital services. I’m grateful for all the thoughts and ideas that were given to us during the initial consultation at the end of last year and I understand that some of the savings ideas aren’t popular. Many other places made these hard decisions a long time ago. Bristol is being forced to catch up and if we don’t do it now we will lose any chance of making savings in a planned, controlled way which can take into account of the needs of local people. A new round of detailed consultation is planned from late January looking at how the council will implement some of the latest savings proposals, if they are approved. Details will hopefully be announced by the time the Voice goes to press. You can also submit questions to be answered at next month’s special budget focused Full Council meeting on Tuesday 21 February. In order to be considered, please get your questions to us by 5pm Wednesday 15 February by emailing democratic.services@ bristol.gov.uk. Elsewhere, getting a grip of the city’s finances and ability to deliver services is a priority, we are also working hard to support those in Bristol aiming to improve their own health and fitness during 2017. Whether it’s doing more exercise, eating more fruit

and vegetables or just living a healthier lifestyle, many of us will have made ‘new year’ commitments to try and change our lives for the better. In January I met with 150 key individuals from sporting organisations across the city to discuss the vision for the year ahead and how to develop sporting opportunities for Bristol

moving forward. More details are available at www.bristol.gov.uk/ cityofsport2017 However, staying fit and healthy is not always just about exercise. What we eat and drink also has a big impact. Last month was the launch of Bristol’s bid to become a Sugar Smart City. Alongside the Jamie Oliver

Food Foundation, Bristol Sport Foundation and UWE, we want to raise awareness of where sugar is in hidden in food so that everyone can make more informed choices. If you would like to take action for yourself and your family I would encourage you to head to www.sugarsmartbristol. co.uk.

Mobile firm seeking armed forces veterans

From Page 1 have been injured in combat. And as a ‘social business’, 10 per cent of profits from this subsidiary will go directly back in to armed forces charities. The venture is being backed by Soldier On!, a charity offering civilian recruitment support to service-leavers and former members of the British armed forces who have acquired a disability, sickness or long-term injury whilst serving. Square One, led by founder and Bristol based Mike O’Shea, has been trading for six years offering mobile phone contracts to businesses across the UK. He has been joined by Adrian Stalley as the Managing Director of this new venture trading as F-Net. Adrian said: “F-Net will be staffed by armed forces veterans, some of whom may have been injured in combat and left unable to continue in the military or have been medically retired from service.” He added: “The philosophy of this social business will be to offer successful careers to veterans as they move back into civilian life. “This is an essential value if we are to maximise the contributions back to these relevant good causes, the benefits of which these staff will understand better than anyone They are initially looking to employ 20 people within the F-Net business from new offices in Bradley Stoke. Nicholas Harrison of Soldier On! said that a big challenge for armed services personnel seeking civilian work was the transition from an environment in which they are discouraged from standing out to one in which, to succeed, you need to showcase your talents. He said a dangerous message is often given to the public that everyone who leaves the armed

forces is the same, with a limited pool of talent. He added: “We are thrilled to be involved with this exciting new business and look forward to helping Square One to provide employment opportunities and professional development to former service personnel” Nicholas, Mike and Adrian will be working to identify the right people for roles in the new company and they are keen to stress that their aim is not to give ‘hand outs’ to veterans but instead a ‘hand up’ to help them move on with their lives. Profits will be divided across the three main branches of the armed forces – Army, Navy and Air Force – as well as to a well-known and respected overarching military charity, the details of which are to be finalised soon. Mike said he hoped that with the 10 per cent contribution along with a £10 connection fee going to the charity, this could reach £250,000 as early as the third year. They have had support from high ranking military personnel and discussions have been taking place with Government as they seek to roll the programme beyond Bristol in coming years. Charlotte Leslie, MP for Bristol North West, said she was impressed by the group’s innovative approach. She said: “Finding exactly the right career path for armed forces veterans has not always been successful. It’s just not good enough to ‘find a job, any old job’. “This approach is much more personal and will find the right job for the right person – as well as opening up a world of work to some veterans who may not have considered this kind of career.” For more information contact: Adrian Stalley on 07812 030947 or at Adrian@ SquareOne.Network

Trust gives £1,450 for primary’s residential trip Bob Smith, the Chair of the Governors of Stoke Park School, presented the School with a cheque for £1,451 from the Lockleaze Trust on a recent visit to the School. This money will be used to help fund their Year Six residential trip to Kilve Court which will reduce the amount the parents have to find. The remainder of the money will be spent on gymnastics equipment. Lockleaze Secondary School sadly closed on 31st August 2004. For several years prior to its closure many of the activities of the children were financially supported by the Friends of Lockleaze School Trust. This Trust had been one of several small Trusts that had benefited from an initiative by the Dawn James Trust (now part of the John James Bristol Foundation). The Dawn James Trust made a

commitment (over 10 years) to give the Lockleaze Trust £1 for every £1 they raised. Accordingly, the Lockleaze Trust and the school raised money as fast as possible and during the 10-year period (and later) managed to accrue an amazing £197,000 (approximately). This money was treated as capital and held in Trust; only the interest from the

capital could be used to support the school. When the closure of Lockleaze Secondary School was announced, the Trust considered whether they should continue in operation. Although there would no longer be any children at Lockleaze Secondary School, their Trust Deed allowed them to continue supporting other children’s activities in Lockleaze. However, with the school’s closure, the Trust felt that they should also cease their activities and decided to pass their accumulated fund to the two main feeder schools of Lockleaze Secondary School (Romney Avenue Junior School and Filton Avenue Junior School). Following that decision, the two junior schools formed separate Trusts of their own to receive the money – these were respectively The Friends of Romney Avenue Junior School Trust and The Friends of Filton Avenue Junior School Trust (both registered charities). The Lockleaze Trust also decided they would divide the money on a 60/40 basis. This meant that the Romney Avenue Trust received 60% (£118,000 approximately) and the Filton Avenue Trust received 40% (£79,000 approximately). The reason for this decision was that virtually all the children who attended Romney Avenue Junior School went on to attend Lockleaze Secondary School, whilst those that attended Filton Avenue Junior School were divided between Lockleaze School and Monks Park School. A cheque for £118,000 was handed over by the Treasurer (Jack Murray) of the Friends of Lockleaze Secondary School Trust to the Chairman of The Friends of Romney Avenue Junior School Trust (Bob Smith).

This was done during a special assembly at the Romney Avenue Junior School in front of all the pupils. Also present was Mr Ray Lockey, former Headteacher of Lockleaze School and Secretary to the Lockleaze Secondary School Trust. The intention of the new Trust at Romney Avenue Junior School was to financially support qualifying projects in the school. The Trust authorised grants of £1200 to projects as diverse as “Exmouth camp”, Visit to Bristol Museum and Physics through Dance, Music and Film among many others. When the Romney junior and infant schools were amalgamated in September 2006, the Trustees decided to continue supporting the new Lockleaze Primary School in the same way. Thus, the money held in Trust continues to help Lockleaze children even today. Over the intervening period the country had the financial crash in 2008 that badly affected the interest income that The Friends of Lockleaze Primary School Trust relied on for the provision of grants to the school. Since then the Trust has supported the Year Six Camp each year with the grant of about £1,300. This figure allows the school to reduce the price the parents pay for camp to a more manageable figure. This year The Friends of Lockleaze Primary School Trust has provided just under £1,400 for the 2017 Year Six camp, with a small grant of £71 for gymnastics. This is what we call Good News! The Trust is still called The Friends of Lockleaze Primary School Trust even though the school has now changed its name to Stoke Park Primary School.

n MONEY ADVICE with North Bristol Advice Centre

Free sessions to help you switch and save An estimated 14 million people could save up to £200 a year by switching their energy provider. Could you be one of them? Unless you’ve changed tariff or provider in the last 12 months, it’s likely you’re paying too much for your gas and electricity and would benefit from an energy tariff check, even if you’d rather stay with your current supplier. North Bristol Advice Centre’s new MoneySmart Energy project are running free and impartial energy advice events in community venues across North Bristol and South Gloucestershire. Using tablets and smartphones, they can help you to check energy tariffs, switch providers, identify simple ways to reduce energy costs and access comparison sites. “New government regulations mean energy companies must provide customers with information about their usage and tariffs and simplify the tariffs

on offer,” said Emmanuelle Claverie, MoneySmart Energy adviser. “This means switching tariffs or suppliers is simpler and more reliable than ever before. We can help people to check their existing energy deal and work

out if they could benefit from a change.” The next MoneySmart Energy Advice session will be held at The Hub, Lockleaze, on Saturday February 4th, 12-4pm. Dropin for a chat and bring along your latest energy bill or annual

n HEALTH ADVICE with the team at Monks Park Surgery As the winter season continues, coughs and colds affect many of us. There is a particularly nasty strain around at the moment that many people are struggling with. We need to get the right care first time for these common illnesses.

Coughs and colds - the facts

What is a cold? Most colds are caused by a mild viral illness causing the typical symptoms that we all know so well - blocked or runny nose, sneezing, cough, sore throat, slightly raised temperature (up to 39°), headache and feeling really rather rotten. If these are your only symptoms, then it is unlikely your GP will be able to prescribe anything to help.

If you have a cold, always carry tissues and use them to catch your cough or sneeze. Dispose of your used tissue as soon as possible as germs can live for several hours.

Catching a Cold We catch colds by breathing in droplets containing the virus (from someone who has sneezed or coughed) or by touching contaminated objects (eg doorknobs) and then touching our nose, mouth or eyes. Wash your hands regularly and don’t share cups or drinking bottles.

Self Care Antibiotics don’t work on colds. They work on bacterial infections only and colds are caused by viruses. You can do a lot at home to ease the symptoms of a cold. l Firstly, rest as much as possible to help you recover; l Drink plenty of fluids especially if you have a fever;

l Eat healthily and make sure you have your five a day fruit and veg. For a sore throat, eat softer food; l Ask your pharmacist for over the counter medicines such as paracetamol, ibuprofen or aspirin (although don’t give aspirin to children under 16 years of age), decongestants and medicines to help relieve a sore throat. Gargling with warm salty water or sucking lozenges can also help ease a sore throat or eat an ice lolly! Steam inhalations can help clear a blocked nose; l Don’t smoke and avoid smoky environments. When should I see My GP? Most colds resolve by themselves within 5-7 days and you can make yourself more comfortable with self-care at home. However, you GP will want to see you if you have any of the following: l If you have a chronic condition such as asthma, diabetes or heart

disease. Babies and older, frail people should also get advice if they’re unwell; l A very high temperature over 39° could be a sign of a more serious infection; l You feel disorientated; l A sharp pain in your chest; l You cough up very heavily infected green or blood stained mucus; l You find it difficult to breathe; l You have significant swelling in the glands in your neck and/ or armpits; l You have a sore throat that doesn’t get better and doesn’t respond to painkillers; l Your symptoms last longer than three weeks. Flu is much more serious than a cold and some groups of people are offered a flu vaccination every winter. Make sure you visit your GP to get yours if you’re in one of the at-risk groups to prevent a more serious illness. Keep well!
