£3.5m investment approved for rail services

Popular Chinese on charity drive POPULAR Cheswick Chinese Bistro and Takeaway Hao Wei has relaunched its charity drive to feed the homeless in Easton, as part of the Wild Goose Project. The Wild Goose Project hosts advice sessions, health clinics, engages with young people and provides breakfast four days a week for people in extreme poverty and need, amongst other community services. Every month Hao Wei sends two chefs down to give 200 plates of Chinese food from the restaurant to those who need the Project’s services. However, in recent months Hao Wei has struggled to raise funds to provide for the Project. Despite some financial setbacks on the campaign Hao Wei is determined to keep going working with Boston Tea Party and other local organisations to do local community events, but they need more regular dona-

A spokesperson for Hao Wei staff said: “We are excited to work with local businesses, like Boston Tea Party, and showcase a series of community events help us raise funds to continue our work with the Wild Goose Project. BETTER connections and more frequent rail services are coming down the tracks after the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) approved a further £3.5m investment in the MetroWest project. The funding was approved by WECA in June to support the next stage in the project, which aims to deliver additional infrastructure and train operations by the end of 2021. A new station will also be constructed at Ashley Down, on the existing Filton Bank (between Filton Abbey Wood and Stapleton Road) providing a local rail alternative from Ashley Down into Bristol city centre. There will also be an hourly service for a reopened Henbury Line with new stations at Henbury and North Filton as well as a half hourly service for Yate local station on the Bristol Parkway to Gloucester line, through the provision of an additional service between Bristol

Parkway and Yate. The WECA Committee has also agreed to take forward ambitions for a new rail station serving Charfield. West of England Mayor Tim Bowles, pictured, said: “Rail

is a key part of my ambition to improve public transport in the region, giving people more sustainable ways to travel. “This includes improving the Severn Beach line to provide direct services to Bath and West-

bury, re-opening Henbury station and more frequent services to Yate. We also have plans to open new train stations in Portishead, Henbury, Portway and Charfield.” n Tim Bowles’ new column is on p19

Credit Union’s 20 years in the community LOCAL bank Bristol Credit Union is 20 years old this month. The credit union gives local people a place to save and provides loans for local people and businesses too. Based in Stokes Croft the credit union was registered on July 15, 1999, and was started by volunteers in Bristol to provide services for people who couldn’t access bank accounts or borrow on the high street. Residents in Horfield and Lockleaze area can access BCU thanks to the support and dedication of the staff at Upper Horfield Community Trust and North Bristol Advice Centre (NBAC). Our amazing volunteer at NBAC, Isabel Webley, is one of our longest serving volunteers and was involved in the setting up and running of Purdown Credit Union, which merged with BCU in April 2007. Over the last 20 years Bristol Credit Union have made over £30 million of affordable loans,

saving up to £17.4 million in interest compared to alternative, often high cost, lenders. Thousands of people have developed a saving habit, collectively saving nearly £7.5m and with over 14,000 members the credit union is the biggest in the South West and one of the largest in the whole country. Kicking off the celebrations James Berry, chief executive, said: “It’s amazing to see how far we’ve come over the last 20 years by focussing on serving our members and our local communities instead of maximising profit at all costs. Some of the first volunteers are still around

today, and I’m so pleased for them that their efforts have produced such a great local success story.” The credit union now serves the whole of the former Avon county. To mark the celebrations BCU are having a month of #20GoodThings, sharing and doing good around the Bristol and Bath area. These include weekly rewards for members, celebrating the pop-up branch service points in the local community as well as getting stuck in to clean and green up the local area. Looking forward, Bristol Credit Union have secured signif-

icant investment for their future growth, with a £500k investment from Bristol City Council, and a further £475k of investments from charitable foundations and co-op lenders. These investments will allow BCU to triple in size over the next five years, helping them to increase their presence in local communities around Bristol, improve their online user experience and increase the number of affordable loans they can make to people who need to borrow and want to choose a local, ethical, mutual service. For further information visit bristolcreditunion.org or call 0117 9247 309. Bristol Credit Union is open Monday-Friday 10am-2.30pm at 112 Cheltenham Road, Bristol, BS6 5RW. The service point at the Upper Horfield Community Centre is open 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday, and the service point at North Bristol Advice Centre in Lockleaze is open Wednesdays 9.30am to 10.30am.

Blind Sally to represent GB in yacht race LOCKLEAZE resident Sally Rodrigues, whose blind yachting heroics have graced these pages before, has been selected to represent Great Britain in the Blind Sailing Fleet Racing World Championships which are being held in Canada in September. Unlike her Olympic counterparts Sally does not receive any funding and her squad has to raise the funds to enable them to compete themselves. A JustGiving page has been set up and can be found at https://www.justgiving.comcrowdfunding/sally-rodrigues On the page Sally says: “ I have been sailing with the GB Blind Sailing squad for over 10 years, and am raising funds to enable me to take part in the Blind Fleet Racing World

Championships in Canada in September. “Since I started sailing I have been lucky enough to compete in a number of competitions, winning one gold and seven bronze medals at national level, and two silvers at international level.

“When I first started sailing in 2008 I never would have believed I could have taken it so far. The experience has changed my life!” The cost of taking part in the World Championships in September is £2,725. This pays for race entry fees, flights and

accommodation. Sally added: “The GB blind sailing squad don’t receive any funding in the UK for training or competitions – we are totally self-funding, and so I would be very grateful for anything to help towards these costs. Thank you so much for your support!”

We had one lesson, four pictures, four brains and we went for it! “We all had some good ideas which we put together to create this poem. It also helped that we were able to choose who we could work with.” Ettie adds: “Bristol is such beautiful place to live, so we tried our best to capture that in this piece of writing. Home is where the poetry is... FHS wins

A HUGE well done from the Horfield & Lockleaze Voice to Year 8 students from Fairfield High School (FHS) Lou, Ettie, Oona and Tilda who wrote this stunning and thought-provoking poem entitled Our Home, which was picked as the winner in a recent in-class competition. The students were studying culture poetry - the ideas surrounding culture and multiculturalism - and the various poems which represented this from around the world. To sum up their learning, in groups, the students wrote some collaborative culture poetry. The poems are also a response

award for health and wellbeing

FAIRFIELD High School (FHS) is delighted to have been awarded the Bristol Healthy Schools’ Health & Wellbeing badge, in recognition for its considerable work to address and promote the issues around this complex and topical subject throughout the whole school community. This award is a celebration and culmination of excellent work, including an open culture where talking about mental health and asking for help is encouraged, curricular and extracurricular activities (focusing on mental health and wellbeing) are embedded to promote healthy lifestyles, and staff and students working together to plan and deliver initiatives to promote good mental health. For example, FHS empowers its students by offering multiple opportunities for them to share their opinions, with concerted effort on the areas surrounding mental health and well-being. An outcome of this being an all gender toilet in response to feedback from the school’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBTQ) group; this group also ran a training session for staff to educate them on how to address and deal with transgender students. Staff are just as important to the FHS community with well-being featuring on every formal agenda. Staff surveys on wellbeing are regularly conducted; recent changes as a result of these including the review of the schedule for meetings and parents evenings, reviewing the pattern of the school day and adjusting it in response to staff suggestions. Janice Callow, Strategic Projects Lead at FHS comments: “The general well-being of our staff and students is of utmost priority, and we are over the moon that our efforts, which take place effortlessly on a daily basis, have been recognised in such a manner.”

Four top events help make a fabulous day FOUR different events were held in Lockleaze on Saturday, July 27. Firstly Buzz Lockleaze held a pop-up charity shop in aid of the local Barnardo’s store in Cheswick Village. A total of £131 was raised to support their important work. Maria Perrett, Buzz’s popular cafe and shop manager and volunteer at the Barnardo’s store said: “Thank you to everyone who came to support the Barnardo’s event at Buzz. “The delicious home-made cakes were very popular and everyone was delighted with their fabulous bargain buys when they filled a bag with clothing for £3. “The total raised was £131! Well done everyone. We are busy planning the next pre-Christmas event which will include gifts and baby wear.” n A Wild Day was held down at the Old Library full of fun activities, games, crafts, displays, walks and food with some birds of prey being the star attraction. Emily Shimell said: “Wow! What a wild day at the Old Library! Thank you all for join-

ing us! We hope everyone who came down had an awesome day, enjoyed all the fun activities, games, crafts, displays, walks and food, and are feeling more wild than before! “A huge well done and thank you to Severin, Emily, Mathilda, Robert, Reid, Jen and Claire in the Old Library neighbourhood who volunteered their own time to organise, set up, shop, create and craft, run, cook, serve, entertain, tidy and clean, so everyone could have a fantastic time!

“Also a huge thank you to Steve England (www.steveengland.co.uk) for his walk on the wild side, clay modelling, soap making and general wild stuff throughout the day, and Paul Golledge with Bird of Prey Discovery (www.birdofpreydiscovery.co.uk) for his awesome bird display throughout the afternoon.” n Lockleaze Community Orchard held a “Build your own Scarecrow” event with prizes being awarded for the scariest, the best look-a-like and the best use of recycling. Lockleaze Community Orchard is situated along Concorde Way cycle path, just off Constable Road. The orchard is maintained by a group of local volunteers who meet on Thurs-

day evenings and the last Saturday of each month. This year they have been working hard to create woodchip paths and a seating area to make the space more accessible for everyone in the community. You can find out more about their upcoming work parties by joining the Facebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/ lockleazecommunityorchard n Lastly Lockleaze Family Community Club held a charity event in aid of children with brain injuries. There was a bouncy castle, face-painting, tarot readings and food. This was all on top of the £600 the club raised for Bristol Children’s Hospitals’ Grand Appeal at their Easter funday which was handed over earlier in the month.

Trust secures a bright future for Ardagh site THE future is bright! Ardagh Community Trust secures a sustainable, community-led future for the Ardagh site in the centre of Horfield Common. Ardagh Community Trust is celebrating the achievement of a community asset transfer lease for the Ardagh site which signals the start of a bright new future for this much-loved public asset under community management! Ardagh Community Trust is a charity set up by local people to take on responsibility for community management of the Ardagh in the centre of Horfield Common following more than 9 years community-led activity to develop a vision for the future of the site as a public asset – and secure the funding needed to achieve it. A community asset transfer lease has now been signed between ACT and Bristol City Council which gives the trust responsibility for management

of the Ardagh site through a 35-year lease. This will enable the charity to raise further funding to improve the quality and availability of facilities at the site, to improve the condition of existing facilities and to ensure that this much-loved public facility remains available & accessible to all into the future. The successful achievement of the CAT lease is significant milestone in the charity’s development and will enable the group to proceed with plans developed by the local community to ensure that the site is accessible to all, and that it serves the needs of the widest range of local people possible. ACT grew out of a campaign by the Friends of Horfield Common begun in 2010 when the Ardagh site was threatened with disposal for development as part of the citywide Area Green Space Plan proposals. Ardagh Community Trust has secured funding through Power To Change’s Com-

munity Business Fund, which will enable them to renovate part of the currently inaccessible and dilapidated pavilion building at the site to create a new, year-round café facility and community hub, create new, fully accessible public toilets including a changing places facility which will provide suitable facilities for all members of the community. The charity is continuing to work with Bristol City Council and other partners including Sport England to develop plans for improved formal sports and informal play facilities at the site in response to need in the local area – specifically for accessible play facilities for children and young people. Additionally, the group are seeking funding to improve the formal gardens at the site and to bring these back into full use as public gardens. Ardagh Community Trust is run by volunteers, and the charity is currently recruiting new

n YOUR MP writes for the Voice

Some great victories in Westminster!

WE’VE had some great wins in Westminster this past month. We won an important vote to keep Parliament up and running over the Brexit period in October. The idea that Boris Johnson could close Parliament and take Britain out of the EU without a deal in some autocratic fashion has now largely been ruled out, which is good! On climate change, we’ve now legislated for net zero carbon emissions which is great. But we now need to work on the detail, much of which will come from the clean growth inquiry that I started and led on the science and technology select committee. We’ll be publishing that report in late August. And whilst recycling and waste processing is an important part of the green economy we’ve now got too much processing sites, too close together and too close to residents. Bundles of waste are processed in Avonmouth, not just from Bristol but also other parts of the country. We’ve gone from processing around 40,000 bundles to over 200,000 in the past five years. For residents and periods of hot weather, this has resulted in extra flies in the area which is frustrating and unwelcome for local residents. I’ve therefore written to the Environment Secretary to ask for additional powers for the Environment Agency to deal with the cumulative impact of high levels of waste processing. Your Champion in Bristol It’s been a busy month with some important progress. I’m delighted the 270 former employees of Avara Avlon Pharmaceuticals Services Ltd based at the Avlon (former ICI) site, many of whom are my constituents, will now get their full contractual redundancy package. Following news Avara had gone into administration, I first raised concerns about the closure of the site and entitlements of staff with government back in March. Since then, I’ve written to the Minister for BEIS, AstraZeneca (the former owner who sold the site to Avara for £1) and Avara as well as met with Unite the Union reps and former employees. I raised the injustice workers were facing in Parliament in early July and

I’ve also been working with The Times to bring this story to light, it was the subject of several reports in July. I am therefore delighted after months of work, much of it led by former employees and Unite, AstraZeneca have pledged to honour their former employee’s contractual redundancy entitlements with a £12m package. In other good news, we’ve also seen the Wellbeing Programme at Southmead Hospital win a national NHS Parliamentary Award following my nomination earlier this year. I got to join the North Bristol NHS Trust team at the awards ceremony and was delighted to have played a small part in getting these hard-working NHS staff the recognition they deserve. After a turbulent time in

Parliament, it was also great to join Bristol Pride – the 10th anniversary of the event saw record marchers and the spirit and positivity was fantastic. Well done to Darryn and his team. I’ve had news that YTL, the company aiming to build Bristol’s new arena, will be applying for planning consent in early September. I’m looking into booking a meeting for me to attend with constituents to hear more from YTL. Keep an eye on my social media website for dates. Whilst I am not opposed to the new arena, I will only support it if it comes with adequate transport investment. There must also be assurances that the site can’t be accessed from residential streets in Brentry, Southmead, Horfield and Lockleaze to avoid rat running, increased air pollution and congestion. It’s been great to hear the Ardagh Trust have now signed a 35-year lease with Bristol City Council, so they can take on management of the site. There’s so much going on at The Vench! SO much is going on this summer at Lockleaze’s own adventure playground, The Vench! They will be celebrating the summer with a big community party on August 14th, from 3pm to 6pm. Join them to be among the first to use the new woodfired pizza oven, make your own pedal- powered smoothie, do some minibeast hunting, and much more. There will also be a photographic exhibition of the history of The Vench from its first opening in 1972 to today, and a chance for you to share your own memories of The Vench! The summer party will also be celebrating two new launches – a brand new website, where you can find information on all the goingson at The Vench, and new outdoor birthday party packages! They will be offering birthday parties for ages 4 and up, with lots of different

themes and activity options for a truly unique and bespoke birthday experience. Booking and special introductory offers will be available through the new website. They are also running lunch clubs throughout the summer holidays, every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. As well as a hot two-course lunch there are

activities such as campfire cooking, Nerf gun adventures and crafts, and free play each Wednesday. You can book your free space by phoning the office on 01179 103930. The playground is open every Thursday and Friday in the holidays from 11am to 4pm, for play sessions for 8-13 year olds (under

8’s must be accompanied by a parent/carer). You can also bring your bikes to the Life Cycle workshop from 12pm to 4pm on Thursdays, for repairs and special bike events like learn to cycle and bike games. The Vench is also open on Wednesday evenings from 5pm to 7pm for youth group, for ages 11-17. Come and take part in fun games, sports and activities! Charley Murrell of Groundwork South, the charity that manages The Vench, says, “We’ve got such a busy summer coming up, with lots on offer, and we’d really love to see plenty of people from the community come and join in.” To keep up to date with everything that’s going on at The Vench, follow them on Facebook and Instagram at The Vench Lockleaze Adventure Playground, and on Twitter @The_Vench, or find their website at thevench.co.uk.

BY the time you read this, we should be settling into our new station, Westgate House on the Southmead Hospital site. We are looking forward to being back in north Bristol and to be honest, I can’t wait! It will make it much easier for us to walk to Lockleaze & Horfield and to get around in the heart of the community. PC Gethin Jones has joined the Horfield beat team. PC Jones brings with him some unique problem solving skills which he has already put to good use. Since the beginning of June, two vans have been broken in to

in the Ikea car park. I really don’t want to see this increase further and I am urging everyone to spread the word. This type of incident not only affects the livelihoods of the drivers, it also has a knock-on effect on their insurance and their time. Please, if you are parking your van in any public car park and have valuable tools inside, ensure you park with your rear door against the wall. If it is dark, park near to a well-lit area. Best of all, either leave your tools at home or leave someone with your van. I know this is not always practical, please reduce your risk as much as you can. Have you marked your tools?

Now that summer is truly here and you enjoy time in your gardens, please be mindful of the security around your house. Is your side gate shut? Have you got a padlock on it? Do you sit in the garden and have a snooze? Have you shut your back door? Is your front door shut? Are your keys out of sight but to hand near to the front door, in case of emergencies? When you leave your property – have you remembered to shut all of

your windows? Have you left your property looking as if someone is in? (i.e. left a light on? Put a light on a timer? Put the radio on?) If you have a driveway and a gate – please pull your gate closed. When you go away, have you remembered to cancel the milk and the papers? You could consider asking a neighbour to park on your drive whilst you’re away. All these reminders! I know it’s a lot to remember! We can all be complacent at times and this is when opportunist thieves win. Don’t let them. Opportunists will try at least 100 door handles and one will be open. They will try 100 car door handles and one will be open…DON’T let this ONE be yours. If there is anything that you would like me to cover in future articles then please get in touch. ONE in 4 people are affected by mental health problems every year. But not everyone feels comfortable discussing their mental health with their doctor, or even family and friends. Many struggle on alone and find it hard to access the help they need. The Time to Change campaign aims to change this, by reducing the stigma around talking about mental health conditions, helping people to share their experiences, and find support. I was delighted to attend an event at the Old Library Muller rd on Monday 29th July, ‘Lifting the Myth of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) supported by the Time to Change Champions Fund in partnership with OCD Action and the Independent Mental Health Network( IMHN) This was an initial discussion workshop looking at what its like to live with OCD and how this condition can be mis-portrayed in the media. I HOPE everyone has had a chance to do a bit of relaxing over the summer whether at home or further afield. The weird weather both in the UK and in Europe has made us all think about the reality of climate change and we can feel a bit helpless about what to do. Bristol City Councillors agreed unanimously to declare a ‘climate emergency’ and move to making the city carbon neutral by 2030 and I joined the cross party working group as the Conservative representative. This was initially a great group of councillors who really wanted to work together. Sadly however, very quickly it was clear the Mayor had decided to hijack the issue for political gain and he has now excluded all councillors from further discussions by setting up an unaccountable ‘board’ as part of the City Office quango. I along with other councillors have tried to call this out at the recent Full Council

IMHN who organised the event, said: “Thank you to everyone who contributed to a frank and open discussion around OCD, especially those who were very open about their diagnosis. “Being candid can be so hard and fearful for sufferers: a big well done. Next step is to look at setting up a a peersupport group in Bristol specifically for those with lived experience of OCD.” The Independent Mental Health Network also campaigns to ensure that local mental health services provide the best possible care and access for

n NEWS

Tim Bowles WESTMINSTER might be slightly distracted by the leadership contest to choose the next Prime Minister but I’m still working with our leaders to plough ahead with plans to improve our region with the funding we’ve already received from Government. Last month’s public meeting in Bath saw multi-million pound plans to improve where we live agreed by all leaders in the West of England Combined Authority, marking a major step forward for the region. We signed off £3.5m to press ahead with plans to improve our railway network with seven new train stations and more frequent services across the region. We also approved big plans to expand the Metrobus network between Bristol Parkway and Cribbs Causeway, connecting even more communities to the increasingly popular service. We’re also seeing investment in new environmentally friendly biogas buses on the M1 route

19

www.horfieldandlockleazevoice.co.uk

connecting Bishopsworth to Bedminster & Frenchay to Patchway as part of plans to introduce nearly 100 biogas buses to our bus network. We’re being ambitious to build a better transport network to get you where you need to be. We are looking to agree £1.3m to develop moredetailed plans for an innovative mass transit system for the region. This funding will help explore the routes across the region including connections to the airport. It will also assess different types of vehicle as new technology continues to emerge. This is a long-term plan but I’m a firm believer in being ambitious because as our region keeps growing, we must embrace a range of options to meet the needs of the

future. We must also make travelling on public transport easier for everyone by simplifying the ticketing system. I have long thought that we should look to London as a prime example where you can travel by bus and train using a single ticket and payment option to cover the whole journey. For example, a resident in Lockleaze could use the same ticket to take the bus into Bristol and then a train towards other locations. Offering the option to use contactless cards will also help reduce bus boarding times and mean that there will br no more worrying about having the correct change before travelling. w Email: tim@timbowles.org.uk

WALKING is simple, free and one of the easiest ways to get more active, lose weight and become healthier. In England, half of all adults are not active enough to benefit their health. This means that they are at risk of developing serious illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Sometimes overlooked as a form of exercise, walking briskly can help you build stamina, burn excess calories and make your heart healthier. You do not have to walk for hours. A brisk 10-minute daily walk has lots of health benefits and counts towards your recommended 150 minutes of weekly exercise. Walking for Health is England’s largest network of health walks with over 360 active walking schemes, helping people across the country lead a more active lifestyle. They’ve done this with great success for over 14 years, improving the mental and physical well-being of thousands of people.

The choir performed well too, with a programme of songs from the musicals, jazz numbers, spirituals, and the “Beatles” expertly conducted by its Musical Director, Dr Fabian Huss, and there was something to please all tastes. The choir will be now be “resting” during August and will resume rehearsals on Wednesday 4th September at Eden Grove Methodist Church from 1.45 to 3.45 p.m. We are actively recruiting new

members and welcome anyone who would like to drop in and just listen or give us a try. We are a non-auditioning choir and, an ability to read music, although useful, is not necessary. For further information please contact our Chairman, Michael Hensman, on 0117 9655368, our secretary, Janet Higgins on 0117 9241534 or email dorothy.bryant@ btinternet.com Or just drop in – we shall be delighted to see you!
