Spring Bridal Showers he spring is the most popular time of year for weddings for a number of reasons. The weather gives you options not available during the potentially hot summer months or unpredictable winter and fall. For the most part, you can count on spring’s mild temperatures and its steady weather patterns — especially in late spring. The spring also gives you flexibility when it comes to planning a bridal shower. Friends of the bride have long put their heads together to pull off a memorable shower experience that all involved parties remember for years to come. Here are some of the most important things to remember when throwing a shower: • Decide on a date that is ideal for all attendees — usually a weekend day when getting off of work isn’t an issue. • Choose your venue and make sure you book it months ahead of time. There’s nothing worse than having to go to your backup plan just because you didn’t plan ahead. • Plan (and stick to) your budget. Set a budget for the entire event and make sure you follow it during both the planning and execution phases. Your fellow bridesmaids will likely pitch in to help you avoid over-spending on this special event.

T

Shower Ideas Below are some ideas for what kinds of spring bridal showers you can plan for your friend or family member. Don’t forget to incorporate the bride’s likes and dislikes into the festivities. For example, if the outdoors isn’t really her thing, a day-long event filled with lawn games probably isn’t your best bet. Be creative, be practical and most of all be fun.

Spa Party A spa bridal shower is a great way to relax the bride during this anxious time. Consider booking your local spa or hiring a couple of professionals to come to you. A DIY spa station could include a massage table, a facial space and a mani-pedi seat. Be sure to play relaxing music and deck your place out with soothing decorations.

Food Party What bride doesn’t love food — especially healthy food to help her stay trim and fit for her special day? Set up a food-themed party to let your guests indulge on deli sandwiches, cheese and crackers, vegetables and fruit salads.

Perfume Bar If your venue allows it, a perfume bar is a unique addition to your bridal shower. This is a great complement to a spa location. Ask the company’s management if they would permit you to put together a table area full of perfumes for sampling throughout the shower.

Go Green new wave of brides and grooms are redefining the way weddings are planned and executed — and the environment is at the forefront of their eorts. According to a poll by the Clinton Global Initiative and Microsoft, 66 percent of millennials believe there is solid evidence of global warming, and about 75 percent say it is because of human activity. In turn, these environmental advocates are taking action by planning weddings that relay less on disposable products and fossil fuels and more on sustainable practices that can lead to a healthier environment. Follow our suggestions below to integrate a little of this approach into your spring wedding.

A

Choose EarthFriendly Vendors One of the most meaningful steps

you can take is to enlist the services of Earth-friendly vendors. These businesses are committed to following environmentally sound processes when producing and delivering their products, which can range from paper flower bouquets to sustainable invitations. There are card companies that print their materials on 100 percent post-consumer recycled paper or alternative non-tree fibers. Some businesses pledge to plant a tree for every order you make with them. Knowing you had a positive impact on the environment in your wedding planning will give you that extra feeling of satisfaction.

Choose Local Venues The less distance you put between your church and reception hall, the less pollution you are inviting into the atmosphere through the burning of gasoline in the vehicles of your wedding party. This seems like a small step, but

consider how many cars will be traveling around town on the day of your wedding. Inviting 200 guests means you’re probably also inviting 50 to 100 vehicles onto your community’s roadways. That’s a large carbon footprint you could lessen by keeping things confined to the same building or ones that are close in proximity.

Recycle Your Flowers Many companies across the country collect flowers after weddings and re-purpose them for delivery to nursing homes and shelter facilities. By choosing to participate in such an arrangement, you are passing along some of the beauty of your wedding to even more people around you. These companies also keep your flowers out of

Etiquette: The Basics Getting married is as American as apple pie, but many Americans aren’t schooled on what‘s proper and what’s not when it comes to weddings. Wedding etiquette is important — and any faux pas can be remembered for years to come — but it doesn’t have to be complicated or stuffy. Here are the basics:

Dress up Unless otherwise stated, weddings are formal affairs. Women should adorn themselves in nonwhite dresses, and men should wear suits. These styles of clothing help commemorate the importance of the occasion. They also look good in pictures.

Arrive early Plan to be at the wedding venue at least 30 minutes early. You need time to greet other guests and be seated. In addition, you don’t want to miss a portion of the wedding because the ceremony has already begun and you have to wait to enter the room.

Be cordial Do you have a grudge against a relative who is also attending the wedding? Wedding etiquette dictates that you — at least temporarily — bury the hatchet. Refusing to acknowledge another guest or starting a fight is a no-no. As a result, be polite to everyone regardless of how you feel.

Reserve judgment Despite what you think about the accommodations or food, keep your opinions to yourself. Your duty as a guest is mainly to support the bride and groom. As long as they are happy, you should be, too.

Say good-bye Before you leave the wedding, say good-bye to the bride and groom. Thank them for inviting you. In addition, congratulate the pair on their new union. Wedding etiquette isn’t difficult to master. Employ these basic tips and you won’t embarrass yourself or be the butt of a few unwelcome jokes.

Add Hanging Decor onsider the space you have to work with when coming up with hanging décor ideas. If your banquet hall is on the large side, it may be difficult to make enough pieces to fill it. On the other hand, you don’t want to overwhelm a small, cozy room with too many materials hanging from the ceiling. Find a balance to pull off the perfect look.

made of a combination of paper cutouts and other special touches that complement the color of your wedding. You’ll enjoy seeing guests flock to capture their own memories of your wedding in front of your spectacularly designed backdrop.

Flowers

The greatest benefits of attending a spring bridal fair involves being able to ask professionals what they can offer in the way of your unique wedding wishes. If you have an idea for a hanging decoration that you haven’t seen at weddings in the past, you can find out the possibilities of pulling it off by asking a designer or planner at a bridal fair. They also may come up with additional ideas that you hadn’t considered. This kind of collaboration is key in exploring all options for your perfect hanging decor. From flowers and lanterns to everything in between, hanging decorations can add a special touch to any church, hall or reception area. The best part is that you can find — or make — a hanging decoration to match any theme.

C

Fresh or dried flowers make for the perfect touch suspended upside down from the ceiling. They provide vibrant colors and distinctive smells, perfect for an entryway or spaces between tables. Mix them with ribbons, strings and other garnishes to make them even more attention-grabbing. A colorful mix of flowers and ribbon can help you pull off the perfect soft design complement to nearly any theme.

more lace, chiffon and ivory, with sheer illusion necklines — dresses that are “more modest, less strapless.” Accents include embroidery, applique and beads, with smaller trains. “We have a lot of outdoor weddings in our area,” she said.“Lighter weight fabrics are preferred.” Trying on a lot of dresses is the key to figuring out what is wanted — be that style, fit or price. “Never hesitate to try things on — that’s the key to success,” McLennon said. “… In trying dresses on, we find what fits us, not what we think will fit us.” Accent colors — particularly blush — on white gowns and vintage gowns are popular, as more brides are opting to wear a relative’s dress or purchase one used and have it remade to their liking. Because of this, she advises trying on all types of gowns. “I tell my brides they should go and look at old gowns, because it’s doable to buy a mid-era gown and alter it into a new piece,” she said. Which brings us to…

Custom dresses and alterations For brides wanting an original look for the big day, a custom dress might be just the ticket, whether they want to remake a vintage piece or create a one-of-a-kind gown. At Annana’s, McLennon is known for remaking gowns. “I can take a back out and make it into a corset if it’s a snug, fitted gown, or just remove things and add things and make it really fit their figure,” she said.“Sometimes brides are pregnant and need extra fabric in their wedding gown; I can totally accommodate them.” Whether she’s altering a dress or creating a new one, McLennon recommends brides bring photos and ideas to the shop for inspiration. While she can create a gown fairly quickly, she advises brides give themselves at least a month’s time “so we can have comfortable fitting sessions,” she said. And if that seems too complicated, See Say ‘Yes’, Page 16

16 New Beginnings Bridal Guide 2016 Say ‘Yes’ to the Dress, continued from page 15

McLennon also carries her own line of handcrafted formalwear right in the shop. “I started making gowns excellent for beach weddings,” she said.“A lot of brides want to go to Hawaii or the coast and want a more causal wedding gown. I have some on the floor right now ready to go to Hawaii or Barbados … “Ladies here are very active women, and the dresses I make are easy to bring along,” she added.“They don’t wrinkle and can be packed in a suitcase.” Susan Wood, owner and operator of Susan’s Custom Sewing, 312A East Second Street in The Dalles, agrees that brides should come in with not only an idea of what they want, but sketches, clippings or photos, too. That might mean an entire dress, or pieces — this bodice, that skirt — that she likes. There’s a time commitment involved; Woods likes at least six months to create custom wedding attire. “They just need to have lots of time,” said Woods.“If you’re creating something

from scratch, and especially from a concept, you need a lot of months’lead time to nail down fabrics — and it does take several fittings.” And be aware — custom dresses are more expensive than their store-bought counterparts, and brides should expect that up front. “It’s quite an involved process because you’re doing a custom dress to fit your body and to your concept … it’s not a quick process and it’s not a cheap process,” Woods said. Prices vary, depending on the style, cost of material, and“how many pieces are involved,” she said, plus a rate for her time. (Her dream is to create a wedding gown out of white leather — but she’s not been able to find anyone willing.) While a custom dress might not be in everyone’s budget, Woods also offers alteration services — no matter where the dress was purchased. “The bridal industry makes wedding dresses for one body type, and there are very few of us who have that body type,” Woods said. She’s also had women come in with their grandmother’s dresses for alteration. “I had one gal last year who wore her great-grandmother’s wedding dress — her grandmother had worn it, her mother had worn it, and she was the fourth generation to wear it,” said Woods. Alterations need to be a line item of the budget — for everyone’s outfits, not just the bride. Expect two or even three fittings for a wedding gown, and one to two for a bridesmaid’s dress. “It’s something that a lot of brides don’t budget for,” said Woods.“That’s part of the wedding you do have to budget for … really, to me, getting the wedding party’s clothing to fit correctly makes a whole day go better.” McLennon agrees. “When people are ordering so much See Say ‘Yes’, Page 18

Garden Wedding Colors

hen planning a garden wedding, it is important to choose colors that match the garden setting. Before choosing your colors, think about which blooms are dominant in the garden ceremony location. Will you be standing in front of rose bushes, hyacinths or an array of colorful tulips? Choose colors that go nicely with your garden wedding backdrop.

W

Moss Green and Nutmeg Earth tones are great choices for a garden wedding. Dress your bridesmaids in tea-length gowns of nutmeg cloth tied with moss green sashes. Choose bouquets of white flowers such as begonias, carnations, lily of the valley or calla lilies. Bronze or silver both go well as accessories for this color combination. Use natural greenery for your wedding ceremony dĂŠcor and reception tables.

Deep Hyacinth and Taupe If your garden location has purple flowers or hyacinth bushes, deep hyacinth and taupe is a good color theme choice. Choose hyacinth-colored dresses and accent them with simple taupe sandals, purses and shawls. Either pearl or silver accessories go well with this color combination. Set the tone for your wedding by choosing wedding invitations with a hyacinth motif.

Cantaloupe and Sunflower Yellow The light orange cantaloupe goes well with a bright sunflower yellow. Choose daffodils, daisies or sunflowers as your wedding flowers, and you could even go with a melon or sunflower motif. These light, sunny colors contrast nicely with greenery See Wedding Colors, Page 22

and blue skies. Swathe your bridesmaids in full-length cantaloupe gowns for a more elegant feel, or go for knee-length sunflower yellow dresses to keep your garden wedding more casual.

Periwinkle and Lavender Another soft color combination that works well in a garden setting is periwinkle and lavender. These colors offer a contrast with greenery or pink and red flowers. Choose a cute periwinkle hummingbird motif or violets to adorn your wedding invitations. Dress your bridesmaids in periwinkle and have them hold sprigs of lavender. Pastels, earth tones and soft colors work best for garden weddings. Stay away from bold, bright colors like neon orange and

fire-engine red. You don’t want your wedding color combination to distract guests from the natural beauty of the garden setting. Garden weddings are more popular than ever before as brides and grooms want to start their married lives amid the splendor of Mother Nature. It’s a good idea to complement nature, not outshine it, when choosing outdoor wedding colors.

Peach and Mint Green Pastel peach is a nice, soft color for garden weddings. Paired with mint green it goes well with greenery and surrounding blooms. Choose a floral or fruit motif, or decorate with metal watering cans filled with peach-colored blooms. Have your groomsmen wear tuxedos with peach-colored vests and pin peach carnations on their jackets.

The Weather No matter how much planning you do, the one thing you can’t plan on your wedding day is the weather. If there is a freak storm or snow shower, at least your finances can be protected with some wedding policies.

A Guest is Injured If someone slips on the dance floor while getting a bit enthusiastic, you could be sued as a result. In fact, any accident that occurs at your wedding, including any damage caused to the property where you are holding your party, could end up costing you a small fortune. As a result, liability coverage is a must to prevent your wedding bill doubling or tripling due to an accident.

Bride or Groom Illness If you wake up on the morning of your wedding feeling absolutely awful, it could just be the nerves kicking in. However, if you are really unlucky, you might have come down with an illness and have to cancel the wedding. Despite your disappointment, and the fact that all of the planning and preparation could go to waste, at least if you have wedding insurance you won’t lose your investment. This will allow you to plan your wedding for another day without losing out financially.

Wedding Gifts are Damaged It’s great to look at the table piled

high with wedding gifts and imagine getting back home to go through them all. However, it would be a disaster if something were to go wrong and the presents were to get damaged or stolen. If you have the right type of insurance then you may be covered for your gifts up to a certain level, so this is certainly worth considering.

The Photographs Are Awful Even if you hire a professional photographer, accidents can still happen with your photographs. What if all of the photographs are over exposed or they are lost before you get to see them? With wedding insurance, at least you can cover the cost of these photos. Your insurance may even pay for you to have the photographs retaken with important members of the wedding party.

Wedding Venue Goes Bankrupt If your chosen wedding venue announces a few weeks prior to your big day that it has gone bankrupt, not only will your wedding day be ruined but you may not even receive a refund. Wedding insurance will protect your investment so that you can book another venue without losing out financially. No one likes to think about things going wrong on their wedding day. However, by purchasing insurance you will be able to enjoy the planning and preparation with greater peace of mind knowing that you are financially covered should something go wrong.

Choosing the wrong photographer may not altogether ruin your wedding day, but it can definitely spoil the memory as you look back on less-than-par photographs. Here are a few tips for choosing the right photographer:

C

Be Quick Don’t wait to the last minute. When planning your wedding, choosing a photographer is one of the first things on the list. Good photographers are often booked a year or more in advance, so the photographer needs to be one of the first people you call after the engagement is announced.

Do Your Homework Review previous work. And don’t just rely on a few good wedding shots posted on a website. Look

through your would-be photographer’s portfolio. Is the lighting good? How about the colors? Also make sure you are reviewing the work of the actual photographer that will be taking your pictures. Larger studios may have several photographers that represent them.

Get References Personal references from others who have used the photographer in question are always a good idea. Inquire not only about the finished product, but also about their experience with them. Was it pleasant and hassle-free? Would they use them again?

Know Their Plans Ask about backup equipment. Not only should your wedding photographer have an assistant to help them, but they should also bring extra equipment in case the originals fail. Multiple lenses, flash cards and batteries are a must.

Sign a Contract Most photographers are very professional, but this step will ensure that they don’t suddenly change the pricing or back out at

New Beginnings Bridal Guide 2016 27

the last minute. Negotiate price, packages, proofs and other particulars, and then get it in writing. Don’t sign anything until you have had the time to review the contract. You want to have a good understanding of the products and services you will be receiving before you enter into the contract agreement.

Because great pictures are the cornerstone of your wedding memorabilia, it’s important to choose a trustworthy and competent photographer. Having uniquely preserved wedding memories is a one-shot deal. Do your homework and employ these tips when choosing the photographer for your wedding.

Wedding Party Bonding oming up with the final roster of wedding party participants can seem like one of the biggest chores of planning your wedding. You don’t want to leave out anyone, and you also want to pair the right groomsman with the right bridesmaid to match your vision for photos. Once you select your party, it’s up to you to help them form a bond ahead of your wedding. That way

C

everything from the rehearsal to the reception can go that much smoother. You want your wedding party feeling relaxed and able to have a good time, so do your best to bring them together. Ways to do so can range from throwing a party at your home or inviting everyone out for a fun evening on the town. Whatever you decide, be sure to include everyone to make sure you create the strongest bond possible.

Hit the Water

Play Sports

The springtime provides beautiful weather for outdoor activities. Take advantage by inviting your wedding party out for a day of fishing, boating, swimming or lounging. If you have a local marina, consider renting jet skis or large rafts for the afternoon and spend the day getting to know each other in the water. You also could choose to simply spend the day at the pool. What’s more relaxing than laying poolside with a cool drink in your hand? The laid-back atmosphere is perfect for fostering communication between those in your wedding party.

One of the best ways to build a bond is through a little friendly competition. Set up a half-day of fun on your local golf course, your local bowling alley or even your local paint gun range. Make sure everyone can attend well ahead of time and consider splitting teams strategically, so people outside of your normal social circle can easily get to know those who aren’t. Your wedding party will appreciate your efforts in trying to bring everyone together before the big day.

Choosing Performers

usic is one of the most important parts of any wedding celebration. Finding the perfect musical act or DJ can be a frustrating exercise if you’re not prepared for the search. Before deciding on your final choice for music, make sure to ask some basic questions — along with any others specific to your wedding — to make sure you find the one most aligned with your nuptial needs. Do you perform original music or play cover songs? This is a question for a band you are consider hiring. You want to make sure their musical preferences match what you’re looking for. Weddings are generally an atmosphere where cover bands may be a better fit, but this is up to you. What is your price range, and can I get a quote on paper? Making sure you have a written quote will help resolve any confusion come payment time. How many weddings have you performed for in the past couple of years?

M

This answer may be one of the most important, as you want to make sure the company is experienced and up to the challenge. Will you be providing the equipment and song list? Can you take requests? A “no” answer to any of these questions could lead to more work for you as you try to coordinate what will be played during your ceremony. Do you only play one event per day? You want to make sure you have the full attention of the musical act or DJ during your wedding. Are you easy to get in touch with if I have questions throughout the music planning process? A good musical act or DJ will surely answer “yes.” A good followup question is for a list of references just to make sure you can conduct a little follow-up research. Do you also do announcements? It’s a great bonus to have your wedding band or DJ make announcements throughout the night. That’s one less thing for you to worry about.

Tips for Delivering A Speech peeches are among thehighlights of a wedding reception, so it’s important to get them right. The key speeches are usually delivered by the groom, best man and the bride’s father, and each has a slightly different function. Speeches are usually a mixture of humor, sentiment, compliments and messages of thanks. Getting the balance right is essential and can make or break a wedding speech.

S

Relax It’s natural to be nervous before delivering a wedding speech, and even those used to public speaking will experience anxiety. Keeping things simple is one of the key tips for delivering a wedding speech. Take deep breaths to calm your nerves, and speak loudly and clearly so that all the guests can hear you. If using a microphone, make sure you know how to operate it before standing to deliver your speech. Any comedy moments should be intentional, with guests laughing with you and not at you!

Prepare Writing a wedding speech can be daunting. Research, preparation and planning are the keys to success. Begin preparing the speech weeks before the wedding day, and don’t get caught out at the last moment. Every speaker should have several stories and anecdotes to share, so begin researching these well in advance.

Always consider the audience you will be speaking to, and make sure all material is relevant and of interest. Never set out to embarrass or offend anyone.

Time It Once you have some stories to share, write them out and time how long it takes to read them. If you are a confident speaker, 10 minutes is a good time aim for to deliver the whole speech. If you want to be brief, three to five minutes is acceptable. One of the worst mistakes is to speak for too long, and lose the interest of your audience.

Consider Props Props can bring additional interest to a wedding speech. A slideshow of photographs can be highly entertaining. For example, showing photographs of the bride and groom as babies and children is always very well received. Remember the boundaries of good taste, and do not show photographs which may offend.

Stay Focused Keeping a clear head is essential when delivering a wedding speech. Weddings generally involve alcohol, and it’s important not to partake too early. Drinking before delivering a speech is one of the worst mistakes you can make, and it’s something that will be remembered for years to come. Delivering a wedding speech is actually an honor, and it’s something you should look forward to doing. If you follow these tips, you should be confident in delivering an entertaining speech to be proud of.

Lawn Games et’s face it. You want your wedding to be the most amazing experience in the history of weddings. The entertainment of your guests is paramount to you, and you’ll do anything to make sure they’re having the time of their lives. Lawn games let your guests wind down after your formal ceremony. They also make for great conversation and friendly competition that bring out the best in your friends and family members. Lawn games are not only fun but inexpensive, as well. You can even build them yourself. Decide which lawn games you’re hoping to incorporate and head to the hardware store for lumber and other necessities. Some of the most popular lawn games include bags, Frisbee golf and lawn darts. Make your own scoring systems and rules to make things more interesting. Here are a few more ideas:

L

Horseshoes Horseshoes is a time-tested lawn game perfect for all ages. Minimal equipment is needed for setup, making it the perfect DIY lawn game for your reception. You can likely find a horseshoe set at your local hardware or toy

store. Or you could make your own by purchasing a few steel rebar rods about 1 inch thick and getting your hands on some actual horseshoes. Check in with family members who have horses or even your local horse veterinarian to see if they have any extras lying around. You’ll have a legitimate horseshoe lawn game set up in no time.

For the Kids Let’s say you plan on having four or five lawn games set up for the adults at your reception. This is a good number that allows rotation between games and includes plenty of guests in the fun. But what about the kids? Children’s lawn games can include pinthe-tail-on-the-donkey, potato sack races or simply smaller versions of the adult games you have set up. Whatever you choose, be sure to assign someone to supervise the activity to ensure optimal safety.

Nails And, yes, their fingernails. “They all want to have the same colors, to match the bridesmaid dresses,” said Abby Jara, a hairdresser with Eres Salon in The Dalles. “The brides party often come in, asking about colors for the wedding. They all chip in with ideas, but the bride is usually the one to decide.” Most want to match, on their fingernails, the color of their dress. “They typically bring in a fabric swath from the bridal colors, or a photograph, said Blossom Langston, a nail artist with Eres Salon, who specializes in nails. “Nails are part of the look, the style,” she said. Designs, for example. “If the wedding has a theme, they might choose a nail design to match the theme. If it's a western wedding, for example, maybe they will choose a daisy design,” Langston said. Although nails can be done for the wedding anytime in the prior week or so, it's a good idea to come in a month or two in advance in order to get appointments for

everyone in the wedding party, especially if its a large party. Good nails may be a small detail, but they are important, Jara added. “It gives everyone confidence that they are looking their best.”

Tips for Perfect Nails One of the finer details of the perfect wedding day look is in your nails. You will be showing off your new wedding ring to all of your guests at the reception, so you want your nails to look their best. Options and design your nails are endless. Choosing the right color of polish is just the beginning.

Prepare Your Nails Since you know your nails will be near the center of attention when the focus is on your ring, start taking care of them months ahead of time. This means stop biting your nails and cuticles. It also means moisturSee Nuptial Nails, Page 42

ize your hands often to get them ready to shine on your special day. You can’t expect a nail technician to be able to fix damage caused by improper care. This comes down your effort in maintaining healthy hands and nails today and beyond.

Know Your Preferences You probably already have a favorite nail look from past formal events you have attended, such as other weddings or your prom. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it. The more familiar you keep these kinds of details, the more relaxed you will feel throughout the day. There’s nothing worse than experimenting with a new nail application only to find it makes your hands feel

clunky and awkward when you want them to feel comfortable and natural.

Have a Backup Plan Nails break and paint chips. Will you be prepared if something like this happens on your wedding day? It’s a good idea to keep extra bottles of polish in multiple locations. If you will be sporting artificial nails, be sure to pack a repair kit comprised of extra nails, glue and other items that will enable you to make a quick fix in the case of a nail breaking. Consider having one in the room where you will be preparing, as well as one in your purse or the purse of your bridesmaid — that way you’ll be prepared to handle an emergency situation without stress.

Styles for the Big Day By MARK GIBSON

hether you are a bride or bridesmaid, having the right hair style will play an important part in how comfortable – and beautiful – you will be on the big day. Helen Sexton, owner and opera-

Helen Sexton, owner and operator of The Unicorn Hair Design, in The Dalles.

tor of The Unicorn Hair Design, in The Dalles, has been styling hair for over 20 years. She has seen wedding hair styles shift from simple “normal” hair to an “up do,” or fancy hair with curls, maybe a hair ornament to go with their veil. “It just depends on the person,” Sexton said. She suggests brides choose a shop and go in early to look at books for ideas. If they know what they want, or have a photograph, the bride and the stylist can figure out if that particular style is going to work with the brides hair. “Communicating exactly what you want the hairstylist to do can be difficult,” she explained. The bride should also be sure to schedule her hair appointment early, as it has to be done the day See Hair Styles, Page 44

of the wedding. “If they sleep on it, it's gone,” Sexton explained. At Eres Salon, hairstylist Abby Jara said the best approach is to have the bride's hair styled at least once before the big day. Set up two ap-

pointments, a month or two in advance, the first for practice and the second for the wedding day. “If they come in three or four days before the wedding, we can practice with their hair. That way we can make changes, make sure it works. That way, on the big day, we know what to do and that will make it easier.” Of course, beautiful hair and nails isn't just for the bride. “We love making the brides maids look beautiful to,” Jara added. For Jara, that's a big part of why she enjoys styling hair. “We enjoy, at the end, when they look in the mirror and they are amazed, they smile and laugh, they know they look beautiful. “They enjoy the transformation, they look beautiful – it means we did it right.”
