A Gift of Memory By RAELYNN RICARTE The Dalles Chronicle

Memories are the gift that keeps on giving because they can put a smile on someone’s face decades after the moment has passed.

Telling your story After 30 years of framing everything from coils to concert tickets and even a 12-foot scenic photograph, Marty Hiser of Westwind Frame & Gallery in The Dalles is up for any challenge. “We can come up with a million ideas,” she said of any item that a person could bring into the 412 E. Second Street business. When people put collections in shadow boxes on the walls of their home, it tells their stories and can jog a memory about an adventure or some significant time in their lives. Military decorations and uniforms, arrowheads found on a property, the ticket and T-shirt from a favorite concert or the autographed copy of a book, Hiser can showcase it into an eye-grabbing display, instead of it being hid away in a drawer. You name it, Hiser can deliver it. Currently, she is working to frame a leather garment bag that was hand-tooled in a western theme. Recently, she framed an acoustic guitar. In this project, as in others, Hiser is working with local artisans to create a deeper shadow box that can accommodate the width of the bag. Reframed wedding photos come alive, and it is always fun to put together a collage of family moments over the years. It doesn’t have to cost a lot to put a picture or object behind glass — Westwind offers

“frugal framing” options from $25 to $99, dependent upon the size of the project. It usually takes seven to 10 business days to turn around an order, but that timeline can be as little as one day with a simple order. For those looking to create a new memory, the business offers handmade jewelry by local artists, such as leather feather earrings crafted by Christy Marquez. Fun & games The entire family, or individuals of all ages, can get involved in projects offered by Hood River Hobbies, 110 Fourth Street. Here are some of the offerings: A Pokemon Club meets every Tuesday at 4 p.m. and the cost to join is $5. Participants can buy a variety of decks to get started that range from $10 to $15, or there are loan-

ers. Enjoy a social connection while learning to play the game by standard rules and improve strategy. The Rocket build and launch classes continue a 20-year tradition on New Year’s Day at 11 a.m. Meet at the store to learn how to make a rocket and then launch it. A start set with launcher sells for $35-45 and other prices vary by the chosen engine and size. Wooden models called U Gears are great gifts for mechanical minds. The starting

Gifts for the sports enthusiast

By MARK GIBSON

The Dalles Chronicle

By RJ CHAVEZ

Regardless of age, when it comes to Christmas gifts, few offer the breadth of wonder and joy as the gift of a bicycle. Whether it’s a peddle-free “push bike” for those just learning to walk or a hightech mountain or road bike for those already exploring the wonders of the Gorge on two wheels, bicycles and their many accessories offer a wealth of gift ideas for all ages. As a major destination of riders of all stripes, who come here from all over the world, the Gorge offers a remarkably rich selection of bikes and accessories with four shops in The Dalles and Hood River: SPR Bicycle Shop, 408 Washington, The Dalles (541-9808418); Mountain View Cycles, 205 Oak St., Hood River (541386-2453); Discover Bicycles, 210 State St., Hood River (541386-2453); and Dalles City Cyclery, 121 E. Second St, The Dalles (541-769-0771). Not only do local shops offer a wide range of bikes of all styles and accessories, they employ experts attracted to the area for the rich ridding opportunities, who are available to guide even those who have never ridden in selecting gifts for the bicyclist. Want a bike for that high-energy youngster in your life? Calvin Lepinski, owner of SPR Bicycle Shop, recommends a small mountain bike over the single-speed BMX bike. “For kids, even a couple of gears make all the difference,” he said, especially on an incline. “And we have a lot of hills around here,” he said of the Gorge.

A tall bike will give a good, well-suited ride for a longer time, he said. Every shop in the Gorge offers both new and used bikes. The most popular are basic, entry-level mountain bikes, rather than road bikes, Lepinski said. “It’s what you want, if you are going to have just one bike,” he explained. “They let you ride anywhere.” Bike prices range from a couple hundred dollars to $1,000 for a good quality mountain bike.

Another safety factor, and one often forgotten, is a bell. “You can yell and not be heard, but a bell tells everyone exactly where you are,” Lepinsky said. Bells make a great stocking stuffer, as does the spare tube and repair kit every biker should be carrying. “The saying is, ‘Don’t be noob, bring a tube.’ It’s inevitable, one day you are going to have a flat you can’t patch.” Every store in the Gorge also offers the tools needed to keep your bike on the road: A tube, pump, patch kit, tire levers and perhaps a multi-tool make up a typical road kit. As a competitive rider, Cooper’s Christmas list was focused on the necessities that power a rider who already has a bike and lives for the weekend rides so readily available in the Gorge and nearby mountains: Gloves, hats, socks and high-energy snacks. Gloves was first on Cooper’s list. “They get torn up and used,” he explained. They come in many styles, and range from $20 to $40. Next up was lightweight, high-energy, high-calorie snacks. “Those are great stocking stuffers,” he said, pointing out a shelf of snacks that included Pro Bars, Chewy Blocks, organic waffles, Vegan

Protein bars and more. Gels, offered in small plastic tubes manufactured by Hammer Nutrition, are also growing in popularity, he said. With names like “endurance fuel” and “recovery drink,” the gels are perfect for hard-riding bikers. “Once you’ve had on of these on a ride, your kind of hooked,” Cooper said. And then, of course there is the standard Christmas gift — socks. But don’t feel bad if that’s the only thing you can think to buy. “Anybody outdoors appreciates socks, especially riding socks made of wool, with compression,” Cooper said.

THIS ENDURA brand baabaa Merino skip beanie features a bill for protecting the face while riding. It is available at Discover Bicycles in Hood River for $40. Like many of the hats in stock at Gorge bike shops, it is made to be worn with bicycle helmets.

Holiday Finds for Your College Student By NEITA CECIL

The Dalles Chronicle The high school student on your Christmas list might have been hard to shop for when it came to holiday gift ideas, but once they head to college, things for sure change. They’ve got a dorm room to decorate, and other various school-related supplies they need. Head over to Staples, at 460 Mt. Hood St., The Dalles, where you can find a variety of practical gifts. Score a cork board for $31.49, so your student can have fun decorating it or using it for important messages. You can also pick up a felt message board at Urban Paper, 415 E. 2nd St., The Dalles, for $45. With laptops a ubiquitous feature on campus, your student could use a laptop sleeve. With all the demands and scheduling complexities of college, a planner is a musthave to keep it all straight and not miss the due date for that big mid-term paper. Pick up a weekly planner at Staples for $25.99. Students live on their cell phones, so chargers are a must-have and a sensible gift. A five-foot charge/sync cable is available at Staples for $5. While your student might not have time to take care of a demanding plant, they would appreciate a small, low-maintenance, tiny plant in a cute Photos by Neita Cecil planter, a wide variety of which THIS felt message board from are available at Hood River StaUrban Paper will add a touch of tioners, 213 Oak St., for $14.95. Gifts that go with that wine... Go ahead, give that bottle of wine. One of the most versatile gifts we can suggest is a bottle of red, white or pink from any of the dozens of wineries in the Gorge. Tasting rooms, bottle shops and grocery stores are excellent sources for local wine. Wine clubs, offered at varying prices and dimensions at most wineries, are another route for the oenophile in the family. But if you’re looking for a twist on the wine theme, or something to go WITH that Cabernet or Pinot Gris you picked out, here are some ideas: Wine racks, including “Balancing Act” by Leoni Montenegro, are fun ways to display

a single bottle: Art on Oak, 201 Oak St., $25 Wine package: A bottle or two from Stave and Stone winery ($24-62), wooden gift box ($15), specialty glassware ($1520 each) and a box of truffles to pair with a red ($12). Wine rack ($70-150) by Lupe Marquez (Lush Libations) who also hand-blows wine glasses ($45), and straws — ideal for that friend who you can count on as a designated driver to enjoy his or her water or soda. ($5-13; two for $20) Bottle stoppers, for preserving wine’s freshness, $16, perhaps combined with a $65 platter for sweets or savories to pair with your sips, offered by glass artist Carolyn Chrystal, who is part of the Art of the

Local art fills the blocks in downtown Hood River

Photos by Kirby Neumann-Rea

Customers peruse local art, opposite page, at Made in the Gorge in Hood River, the community’s oldest collaborative. Above, art ranging from $15 to $100, clockwise from left: found object art from Mary Mosier, Art on Oak; wood art from Steve Stegall, and jewelry, books and other items from fellow Frame Gallery cooperative artists; Charlene Fort’s blown glass lampshades at Made in the Gorge; Michelle Yamamoto’s books, paintings and handbags, at Art on Oak; air plant hanger by April Sampson, at Lucy’s Informal Flowers In Hood River, which also has art, decor, and other gifts.

By KIRBY NEUMANN-REA Hood River News

From small items such as jewelry or gift cards, on up to large-scale fine art and sculptures, downtown Hood River features a quartet of well-established cooperatives organized or staffed by the same local artists whose work is on display and for sale. You might find lavender lotion, a key ring made from the old iconic PDX airport carpet, miniature watercolors, glass sculptures made from found objects, or large-scale watercolor or oil paintings . Three of the four have overlappint names: Made in the Gorge, Art on Oak and Art of the Gorge, in addition to a seasonal gallery within The Frame

Gallery. All four locations yield color and variety, with gift items for any budget, starting in the $5$20 range. At all four locations, it is possible to find something to fill out your gift list for two or three people and stay within three digits. All are artist-staffed, and you’ll find the artists are each others’ allies, happily sharing details about their gallery-mates and their work. ■■ Made in the Gorge is the oldest of the cooperatives, dating to 2001, and located most of its life in its current location, 108 Oak St.; open seven days a week, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., staffed by a member artist. ■■ Art on Oak, 210 Oak St., next to Stave and Stone Winery tasting room, is open 10 a.m.

to 6 p.m. daily through the end of the year, with artists on site each day and expanded hours starting in mid-December through Christmas. ■■ Art in the Gorge, 301 Oak St. is a seasonal pop-up that emerged last season and returned in summer 2018, and is scheduled to remain open at least until January. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week. ■■ The Frame Gallery, 402 Oak St., offers off-the-beatenpath artistic gifts created by local artists, who are on site Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The cooperative started two years ago and offers fine art paintings, pottery, jewelry, glassware, sculptural art, cards, prints and more. Find it on Instagram, #hoodriverartgallery

Contact each museum for more information: ■■ History Museum of Hood River County, hoodriverhistorymuseum.org ■■ Western Aeroplane and Automobile Museum, Hood River, www.waaamuseum.org ■■ Columbia Gorge Discovery Center, The Dalles, www. gorgediscovery.org ■■ Cascade Locks Historical Museum, www.cascadelocks. com/about-cascade-locks/historical-museum ■■ Hutson Museum, Parkdale, www.facebook.com/hutsonmuseum

Coffee shops and restaurants The Gorge is home to many great coffee shops and restaurants, not to mention breweries, cideries and wineries. A gift certificate or invitation to share a drink or meal is bound to be appreciated. I’ve been told by merchants that it’s pretty quiet after the holiday rush, making January the perfect time to support local establishments.

eBike tours MountNBarreL combines wine tasting and bike tours, offering both pre-planned tours and custom-made. Any level of rider will be covered, with hybrid cruisers, ebikes and a new 15 PAX shuttle. A light breakfast is provided during check-in, as are a bike with back rack carrier and a crate, helmet, water, catered lunch/ food pairings and exclusive wine experiences during all stops. For more information, to book a tour or to purchase a gift certificate, visit mountnbarrel.com. Pricing depends on the package chosen.

Skiing, snowboarding lessons

Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Resort has plenty of experience options for everyone. Adult (ages 13 and over), kid (ages 4-12) and private lessons are available. Groups are organized by skill level, terrain preference and personal goals. Ski and snowboard lessons are available — and you can add on lift tickets and equipment rentals. Prices vary; check the website for details at skihood. com/lessons-and-rentals. For those who already skilled in mountain sports, season passes, lift tickets and gift certificates all make the season snowier.

Lucky Littles Boutique, above, has clothing and gifts for moms and kids of all ages.

By EMILY FITZGERALD News staff writer

The holiday season is magical at any age, but for kids, there’s just something extra special about this time of year. Kids can be difficult to shop for, but with so many gift options throughout the Gorge, you’re sure to find something to make them smile. ■■ Fun little hobby-grade radio-controlled cars make great gifts. For indoor fun, try the 1/24 Scale Torment ($59.99) or, for outdoor fun in a compact 1/16 scale, try the Dromida monster truck ($99.99). If you buy them from Hood River Hobbies, you can get help troubleshooting them and fixing them after a crash. Open 10:30-6 p.m. Monday-Tuesday and Thursday-Saturday. Closes 5 p.m. Sunday. 101 4th Street, Hood River.

■■ Treat both mom and baby this holiday season at Lucky Littles Boutique with matching hats ($29.99), a Milk Snob Baby Carrier ($58) and cover ($36), a Happy Mamma Essential Oil ($14) and a Kyte baby Swaddle ($19.99). Baby will stay warm all winter long with a soft Lovey ($18.95) and Goumi pajamas ($28), booties ($16) and mitts ($12); and clean with a sea sponge ($9.99) and brush set ($24.99). Open 10-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday, 11-3 p.m. Sunday. 514 State Street, Hood River. ■■ Boardgames are a gift for the whole family. Catan Games and Expansion Sets ($25-$45) are G. Williker’s bestselling games, and Shadows in the Forest ($28) is a unique game with a twist…play in the dark! G. Willikers also carries Squishable Avocados

(mini $22, large $45) for kids to “Avo-cuddle” and a variety Tegu Magnetic Wooden Blocks sets ($16-$115). Open 10-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday; closes 5 p.m. Sunday. 202 Oak Street, Hood River. ■■ An annual museum membership is a gift that’ll keep

giving all year long, and Wonderworks Children’s Museum of the Gorge offers stimulating, interactive experiences for kids and their families to enjoy. A 12-month Family Membership ($85) covers two adults and all children in the household; and a 12-month Family Plus Mem-

tive integers (whole numbers) in their quest to achieve a very mathematical goal, available at Oregon Trail Games. For younger kids, or anyone looking for a snuggle buddy, Oregon Trail Games carries Mini Squishables ($19.95). Open noon-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday, closing at 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. 421 E 2nd Street, The Dalles. ■■ Klindt’s Booksellers is the perfect place to find unique gifts and stocking stuffers, such as a leak-proof Bat Sippy Cup ($12), an Andes Gifts character bership ($100) covers one ad- hat ($25), a Douglas cuddle toy ditional adult and child guest ($13), a fish pen ($6) and more. per visit.
