QUOTE FROM ARTIST

At the core of any vibrant and socially relevant art form, be it music, paintings or literature, is an intrinsic force for subversion – subversion that causes the art form to regenerate and develop. This experiment precisely showcases this kind of subversive vitality.

nitiated in 2009 by Ms Cissy Pao, the then Chairperson of the HKAC, the series of annual flagship exhibition is an effort to present new perspectives, foster new artistic trends, and initiate conversations around the issues of our time and of the Asian contemporary art scene. Co-curating with guest curators of critical acclaim with strong connections to Asia, Hong Kong Arts Centre has mounted shows of awareness, education, and reflection, and has rendered the annual flagship programme a dynamic, sustainable one. While each exhibition was a revealing and thrilling ride in its own right, the past flagship exhibitions were united in their focus on the human experience by taking our everyday life as the point of departure and aspiring to look beyond. Another continued subtext of the exhibitions is the exploration of the role of art. In the recurring themes of nature, technology, dimensions, and scales of our surrounding environment, art documents, magnifies, reveals, and surpasses cultural and political barriers and suggests new possibilities.

Vanishing Caves by Toyo Ito

he 13 artists featured in this show articulated their own interpretation of the relationship between two- and three-dimensionality through a variety of artistic disciplines, including soft sculpture, papercutting, video, photography, and painting. Toyo Ito’s installation, Vanishing Caves, which he playfully termed “an abstract 2.5 dimensional representation of Taichung Metropolitan Opera House”, was emblematic of the show – the spatial relationship articulated in the installation reversed and fluctuated with the viewing angle as spectators circulated around the work. Re-examining the relationship between the dimensions and breaking down the barriers and constraints in between, the exhibition cast a fresh eye on the playfulness of dimensionalities, and how their complexity resembled that of life - Isn’t our daily life complex with its myriad layers and colours?

hrough a diverse selection of mediums including multimedia installation, painting, video, film, and performance, the eight celebrated Asian contemporary artists featured in the show invited us to be lost, and perhaps at the same time found, in nature through their visions of it. Takashi Kuribayashi’s Wald aus Wald (Forest from Forest), one of his biggest installations ever presented in Hong Kong, covered both floors of the Pao Galleries with contagious tranquillity. The works featured were united in their aspiration to reconnect with nature’s awesome grandeur, to retrieve the intimate bond between the self and nature, and to achieve a sustainable, spiritual, and harmonious integration. In response to this era of ecology, the show provided a new plateau as to how the subject could be approached.

ong Kong Arts Centre is always keen to embrace the changing pace of time and to introduce the latest artistic progress to its audience. Technology, an element that was once at the fringe of the artistic field, is now making new waves in the forms of digital art and sophisticated mechanical devices used in contemporary art. In response to today’s technology laden world and the ever-evolving pairing of art and technology, the fifth annual flagship exhibition delved into the marriage of the two. The works engaged technology as a narrative device, or the subject, showing that the difficulty lied not in incorporating new technology, but in striking a balance.

he Hong Kong Arts Centre 40th Anniversary flagship exhibition Wan Chai Grammatica: Past, Present, Future Tense celebrates the cultural and artistic traces of Hong Kong, and is simultaneously an investigation into and a celebration of Hong Kong identity, as seen through the lens of one of Hong Kong's most iconic city districts: Wan Chai. While retaining its distinct local identity, Wan Chai continues to reflect the unique crucible of economic, political, ethnic and cultural diversity that has shaped Hong Kong’s heritage. The cityscape of the district is like a kind of architectural palimpsest, simultaneously revealing multiple layers of its history, and traces of the diversity of the people who have passed through, settled, built and thrived there from both East and West. Taking Wan Chai as both its point of definition and its point of departure, the exhibition is a multigenerational, multi-disciplinary, and multi-cultural project that invites reflections on the question of who shares in Hong Kong’s unique identity. What does it mean to be a ‘Hong Konger’? How do our diverse visions̶past and present̶reflect our different, but equally authentic, experiences? Participants in the exhibition include Hong Kong artists from different generations, backgrounds and national origins, as well as artists from the international community who have a special connection to Hong Kong. It will include a diversity of artistic genres and languages as well as newly commissioned works that express artists’ explorations of Wan Chai on many different levels, including personal, historical, and experiential. Above all, the project encourages resonance and response among participants, not only to Wan Chai as a physical and auratic space, but also to each other.

How do “past, present, future tenses” converge in Wan Chai? And do they come together in the exhibition itself? V ̶ We are bringing together artists of different

generations and backgrounds. While each artist is responding to or illuminating different aspects of Wan Chai as a physical, historical or emotional site, together these multiple expressions create a kind of collective discourse, a language of communication that helps to creates both a deeper and wider understanding of Wan Chai and our connections with it. There are myriad ways that the interplay of past, present and future tense plays out in the artworks in the exhibition. What's your impression of Wan Chai? C ̶ One of the founders of HKAC, Mr Tao Ho, who

is also the architect of HKAC building, had a vision to transform the newly reclaimed land into a cultural hub. When we were doing research for the Tao Ho session in our time gallery, we found how Tao Ho envisioned HKAC as an arts and cultural space not limited in the building, but one that could be extended into the public space. Ho’s blueprint is a classic example of how creativity cannot be confined by time, but projects into the future of Hong Kong’s art and cultural scene. Is there any unique local culture that you love and wish it could be passed on? C ̶ I really enjoy wandering in Wan Chai as it is a

perfect representation of the diversity of Hong Kong. We can find traces of the changes of coast line. The architecture can also be appreciated - Bauhaus buildings like the façade of Wan Chai market, HKAC as the first arts and cultural hub, Blue House. V ̶ Even having lived in Hong Kong for over 30 years, I can still be surprised by how much there is to discover about seemingly familiar places if one is simply more attentive to them., I loved stopping at little shops and myriad cha chaan teng. The participating artists themselves are linked in various ways. Do these nexuses between the artists come across in the exhibition? Or, how do the works interact with one another? C ̶ This exhibition presents a matrix of the art and

cultural scene of Hong Kong as well as the nexuses between one artist and another, one generation and another. They have a heart of Hong Kong and of enjoying the characteristics of Wan Chai as demonstrated through their artworks. Also they see Wan Chai from their own perspectives and have unique stories to share. The artists are unique but they are making dialogues with each other. This is a journey to bring viewers to the heart of Wan Chai, where hybrid cultures are cultivated and set the tone of Hong Kongness V ̶ I have learned a great deal more about the HKAC’s connection and commitment to the local Wan Chai community. These nexuses, or connections, exist not only among the artists themselves, but also between the artists and Wan Chai, and between the artists and the HKAC as a site。

Co-curated with cross-disciplinary artists from Hong Kong, Asia and Europe, the events spanned across performing arts, installation exhibition, urban exploration, and “chill chats” on arts and artistic creation. The festival took the contemporary art experience to the theatre and beyond, traversing the city’s old and unknown corners, a hustling and bustling mall, the harbourfront of lost times, a restaurant, virtual living spaces and the no-trespass zone at the HKAC. The programmes seek to catalyse cross-media creation, foster human interaction, challenge and open up the senses, and revealed the fascinating dynamics between the arts and our day-to-day existence. The Dragonix Multi-Arts Festival was the final stage of the Cultural Masseur programme.

Still remember the game of hide-and-seek? You can actually play it on paper! There are numerous hidden codes, symbols, and “Easter eggs” on each page of comics of famed Taiwanese comics artist, Push Comic. Fans love them as fun decoding/hunting games. A legend of sci-fi comics and the “Godfather of Pop Culture”, Push Comic invites you to play with him at this exhibition – go on a “quest” for whimsical and wild imaginations, fall for his one-of-a-kind pen work with American and European influences, and collect his quotes, codes, and characters. From working as an art editor for UFO Group to working for Joy Comics, from drawing offbeat sci-fi comics to making art toys, from entering the French and Italian comics market to creating advertisements for BBDO, the exhibition focuses on three significant stages of Push Comic’s 33-year creative career and his global vision. A “game” of creativity and diversity, the exhibition displays some of his manuscripts, drawings, figures, comic books, commercial projects, and graphic designs. Each panel of a comic strip has limited space, but to Push Comic, it is an infinite world. Whether it is his previous, popular work Balézo or the latest, locally-inspired story Bamboo Windy Towns, every single panel of his comics is full of surprises. His imagination and detailed drawings have captured the hearts of many readers, including members of the renowned Taiwanese rock band Mayday: Ashin and Masa.

Justin、Kent

Artists shared their experiences of participating in large-scale European comics festivals through the HKAC.

HAPPENINGS

T

his summer, comics artists Justin Wong and Kent Yuen made their appearances in the European market. The creativity of Hong Kong artists is once again recognised by overseas readers! In recent years, Justin and Kent have participated in various large-scale European comics festivals. They won the favour of European publishers, and the French edition of their works have been published in March and May respectively. Justin’s comics is about a worker who has just been laid off. Despite this, the protagonist chooses to enjoy this short break from his routine life in a light-hearted manner. It is this mantra of “not having to work tomorrow” that connects with the European readers. The French edition of Lonely Planet Je préférerais ne pas has caught the attention of French critics: comics social cataloguing website BDGest.com has described Justin’s style as “Like Chris Ware, having eaten Steve Jobs at breakfast”, and Justin was consequently invited to attend the book launch events in Paris. “This book was created in 2010. The protagonist and scenarios in the story are a kind of reflection of my life and career at that time. I used to be a teacher by day, political comics artist by night, but the two roles hindered one another,” noted Justin. “As an artist, I think we should not have full-time jobs, since we need more experiences and encounters to spark our creativity.” Work-life balance – it turns out that it’s not just a buzzword in Hong Kong, but an issue in France as well, that’s why this topic and the comics resonate with them.

According to Kent, the production process was smooth, even though there were limitations for documentary comics and cultural differences. “French comics panel is usually consistent and neat. Comparatively, Hong Kong comics is more cinematic and dynamic.” On promoting local comics at international comics festivals and working with different French publishers, both Justin and Kent thought that the Hong Kong Arts Centre (HKAC) has played a significant role in these collaborations. “If it was not for the HKAC, I would not have had this valuable chance to participate in the Angoulême International Comics Festival, let alone make new friends with French comics artists and publishers. It’s a great

Meanwhile, Kent, a keen football fan, is more than happy to represent Hong Kong in the creation of Histoires incroyables de la Coupe du Monde, a collection of short-comics on the World Cup. Together with more than 20 other comics artists across the globe, they fuelled the pages of comics with enthusiasm and passion. “I used to be a very traditional Hong Kong comics artist that specialised in the genre of martial arts, so I never thought that I would have the opportunity to work with foreign publishers and venture into other comics themes,” said Kent. “I feel honoured and glad, marrying my love for football and comics, it’s a dream come true!”

experience,” said Kent. “Hong Kong artists didn’t participate in the Festival for the first 30 or so editions. The Festival is like a battlefield between comics masters from around the world, they gather to share their skills and showcase their works. I can also feel the strong presence of comics in France – comics are sold even at an ordinary eatery.” To Justin, the HKAC serves as a bridge that connects publishers and artists, making the cooperation more convenient and easy. “In recent years, the HKAC has been actively organising touring exhibitions to bring different artists to various European comics festivals. This helps us to expand our networks step by step, which is crucial to the development of the industry,” he added. “As one of the participating artists, I was able to communicate with many foreign readers, and I found that comics readership in Europe is very wide. They are open to different styles of comics, and I can still feel their passion for it, which is rather rare in Hong Kong.” The HKAC has been actively utilising different means and platforms to promote local comics and animation in the past decade, encouraging local comics artists to participate in exchange events of various cultural contexts, so that they can explore and seize different opportunities. With the unwavering support of CreateHK, numerous touring exhibitions have been successfully presented and organised. They have increased the exposure of local comics artists. With their exceptional creativity and professional skills, Hong Kong comics artists certainly have the potential to shine on the world stage. To ensure that they get a chance for further development in overseas markets, the HKAC will continue to seek effective platforms where Hong Kong comics can connect and communicate with readers from all parts of the world.

A ̶ Artslink

R ̶ Rachel A ̶What made you go back to school to study ceramics at the HKAS after a few years of work?

R ̶I was working in the fashion industry at the time. By chance, I went to a ceramics class with a friend, which piqued my interest for further studies. Incidentally, it was the year that the BA Fine Art programme, run by the HKAS and RMIT University, started a major in ceramics. So I needed to look no further. A ̶After finishing the course, why did you decide to get into art education? What gives you the greatest satisfaction in teaching?

R ̶As a student, I received two scholarships to study in the UK so I was inspired to pay it forward. By teaching full-time at the HKAS, I have abundant resources to spur the growth of my students, which enriched my own experience too. I’m really proud of my students, not only in terms of academics, but also of their wisdom and character. My best wishes to them as they persevere in the journey of becoming artists or professionals in the art field. A ̶ As an artist, what does ceramics mean to you?

R ̶My topic of interest is “equilibrium”. I like combining perishable materials, such as paper or rubber bands, with ceramics, which is durable, to explore the relationship between the two. Ceramics to me is the pathway to search for my philosophy of life.

R ̶I will go with the group and share my thoughts on art with a bunch of art-loving secondary students during the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale. I hope this tour would expand their artistic horizon to see that there are numerous modes of self-expression and themes in art. In addition, I will introduce them to various things related to the Triennale, as well as the role of art in society.

A ̶Could you also talk about your solo exhibition at Touch Ceramics, that takes place from September to October? What is special about the artworks this time? R ̶ The title of the exhibition is “From Functionality to
