ANNUAL REPORT 2016  –  2017

A

FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

As a school, it’s in our nature to pursue growth. Each year in the pew, in class, and on the field, we see our students grow in faith, understanding, and ability. I’m proud of the ways in which our students and our community flourished in the 2016 –17 school year. We saw our students grow in faith as they embraced the sacraments, particularly in experiencing them for the first time in Confirmation, in First Communion, and in First Reconciliation. This year, we saw increases in students interested in serving at Mass, whether as altar servers, lectors, or Eucharistic ministers; we saw an increase in students who attended optional events like our silent retreats; and we saw students ask to join the Church. Our students dedicated themselves in service to others through over a dozen supply drives; through building homes for vulnerable families in Atlanta and Kentucky; through feeding homeless men and women in downtown Atlanta; through mentoring fellow students in younger grades; and through building churches in rural Mexico. The 38 students of the Class of 2017 received 179 acceptances from 107 colleges and universities across 44 states, and over $3.5 million in scholarship offers. A full quarter of them received full-tuition offers from at least one postsecondary institution. Our boys varsity team won the first state championship in our basketball program’s history. Our tennis program earned an individual state title, and our chess team took 1st place in the inaugural state chess championship. Even when our students take losses on the field, they win in virtue in grace, in patience, in endurance. When we see this growth, it confirms us in our mission to form students into faith-filled, magnanimous young men and women. It’s your generosity that enables these programs — through our Annual Fund, through our Spring Gala — and I am deeply grateful for that generosity. It demonstrates that you too are moved by and believe in our mission.

Yours in service,

Kyle M. Pietrantonio Head of School

FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

2016 –17 was a record-breaking school year for Holy Spirit Prep, and not just because of the three state championships our students earned last year in basketball, tennis, and chess. Our school community made over $540,000 in gifts to the Annual Fund in support of HSP’s Catholic and educational mission. Through sponsorships, ticket sales, donations, and auction sales, this year’s Spring Gala raised over $325,000 when our goal was $250,000. My youngest child graduated last year with the HSP Class of 2017. Though all three of my children now count themselves as alumni of Holy Spirit Prep, we are by no means finished in our support of this remarkable institution. We are grateful for HSP because we know the effect this school has had in our family’s life; we can trace it from those early days of preschool on through high school. In gratitude, we will continue to support our school’s work in the lives of other students. It’s clear that our community understands and appreciates the fruits of a Holy Spirit Prep education. I want to invite you to join me this year in sustaining and growing your gifts to an institution which has helped us form our children into faith-filled young men and women poised for a lifetime of happiness. Yours in service,

Joann G. Jones Chair, Board of Trustees

OUR MISSION AND VISION

MISSION We seek to create a unique communion of joy

among students, their families, and our faculty and staff, in the context of a preeminent pre-K2 through 12th grade Catholic college preparatory school. We want to prepare our students for a lifetime of happiness by inculcating in them three foundational virtues. First, we want them to have a deep and abiding faith in God’s blessings and love for them.

Finally, we want them to embody magnanimity — a greatness of character and of soul — such that they may go through life with a spirit of courage, a spirit of joy, a spirit of kindness, and a spirit of generosity. VISION We strive to be the preeminent pre-K2 through 12th grade Catholic college preparatory school in the country, graduating young men and women who personify the Portrait of the HSP Graduate (page 26).

Second, we want them to exercise prudence — the ability to make good decisions for the rest of their lives — by obtaining a rigorous academic foundation, accompanied by the use of their own powers of reason.

DONOR PROFILE

The Cunningham Family What are some of the most important reasons you send your children to Holy Spirit Prep?

Why is it important to support HSP through the Annual Fund?

We were both raised in families that stress the importance of obtaining a quality education to attain your future goals in life. It was important to us as parents to hold the same expectations for our children’s educations and their success. The guiding principle was a faith-based education and a strong academic curriculum. The Holy Spirit Prep community provides an environment that not only supports academic excellence, but also one that enhances a child’s experience through participation in clubs, sports, and outside community activities. It is very comforting to know that our children are reaching their goals both academically and spiritually. Our children love their school and faith, and as parents we couldn’t ask for more.

Holy Spirit Prep is a young independent Catholic School that offers many benefits to our children. Unfortunately, tuition does not cover all of the costs to run our school. The Annual Fund provides another way for parents, grandparents, and alumni to bridge the financial gap to maintain our school’s successful operation. We also believe in the importance of teaching our children all of the ways to give back to our community whether it be time, talent, or donating to the Annual Fund. Our hopes are that one day the girls will give back to something they truly believe in like we believe in Holy Spirit Prep.

What is a memory of HSP that will stay with you forever? What have been some of your favorite moments here?

Holy Spirit Prep has numerous attributes that have made lasting impressions on our family. The administrative staff, curriculum, and philosophy of discipline have all been a positive part of our HSP journey — but nothing has left a more lasting impression than the teachers. All of the teachers we have encountered along the way have demonstrated true professionalism with caring attitudes toward both students and parents. They take a dedicated interest in and love for each individual student, and have their best interest at heart. Our children have received personalized attention in their learning experience, and, as parents, we have received open communication with all their teachers. We have never had a question or concern go unanswered. When it comes to our children’s education, we feel very reassured and confident that they are receiving the best. Our kids love their teachers every year. Simply stated, the teachers are the heartbeat of Holy Spirit Prep.

Holy Spirit Prep has given us many lasting memories that we will keep forever in our hearts. The memories began at the Preschool where they were introduced to participation in the Christmas Program, Little Cougar Soccer, and truly having their first school experience. The one event that is dear to our hearts is the Father-Daughter Dance. Each year, we witness the growth in our children as individuals, but we really treasure the bonding that takes place between father and daughter. As we progress through the Lower School, we have watched both of our girls grow in their faith. One of the most lasting memories includes seeing our oldest daughter grow in her Catholic faith through First Penance and First Communion and (eventually) Confirmation. We are blessed to have our youngest daughter receiving these same sacraments this year in second grade.

2016 – 17 ANNUAL FUND

In the classroom, on the field, and on stage, the Annual Fund enables HSP to live up to its mission — forming students to be faith-filled, magnanimous, prudent men and women, prepared for a lifetime of happiness. Because of that, a gift to the Annual Fund is the primary gift your family can give to HSP each year to support the gifts of formation our students receive.

ANNUAL FUND REVENUES

Gifts to the Annual Fund are unrestricted, and cover those expenses not covered by tuition alone, including faculty and staff salaries, maintaining school facilities, educational technology, and resources for our arts and athletics programs. In 2016 –17, the Annual Fund accounted for just over 6% of the school’s revenue. Over the next several years, we need to increase this level of giving to an average of 8 to 10%, a normal range for independent schools, so that we can continue to thrive and achieve greater financial stability. The success of our Annual Fund depends on the participation of every member of the school community — parents, grandparents, trustees, faculty, staff, former parents and grandparents, alumni, friends, foundations, and corporations. Gifts to the annual fund are tax-deductible. DONOR PROFILE

The Duran Family What are some of the most important reasons you send your children to Holy Spirit Prep?

Why is it important to support HSP through the Annual Fund?

We chose Holy Spirit Prep for our daughter, Anamaria, because of its mission to form students that live the Gospel during their school years and throughout their lives after graduation. We wholeheartedly agree with the mission and vision of the school, honoring faith, prudence and magnanimity as their main virtues. At the same time, HSP has an excellent and challenging academic program with plenty of extracurricular activities to enrich body, mind, and spirit. As stated in the school’s philosophy of education, Holy Spirit Prep is based on the Christian concept of the human person: this is what we were looking for for our daughter.

It is not well known among the parent community that tuition covers just under 80% of the operating costs of the school. That means that the other 20% or so has to be covered through fundraising efforts, of which the Annual Fund is the main source. The alternative to the Annual Fund is tuition increases, nobody’s preferred option. Another not-well-known fact is that gifts from foundations depend on the level of participation among the entire school community. Foundations see high rates of participation as a vote of confidence in the school and its mission; they are required before a foundation considers a grant. The Annual Fund is an integral part of what allows our children to have the teachers and facilities that make our school what it is.

When we first enrolled, our family was received with such interest and genuine care. The staff, faculty, and administration go out of their way to serve others with kindness and professionalism. All students have amazing role models in their teachers; we have been so moved by their presence in morning Mass and prayers. There are also so many service opportunities where charity and other virtues are expressed. These reasons and many others are why we are so happy and proud to send Anamaria to Holy Spirit Prep. How have you seen your student grow at Holy Spirit Prep?

Holy Spirit Prep has given our daughter the opportunity and the blessing of having very good teachers whom she respects and admires, and who, at the same time, challenge her. Anamaria has found an environment in which she feels excited to explore the arts in choir and theater, sports (she has tried almost all of them), and in which has learned to care for others in the pro-life, Bridge and iFaith apostolates.

14

Why do you donate your time and resources to HSP?

We feel indebted to the school for its contribution to our family, our daughter, and other children. The school offers a truly Catholic education in an environment that is nurturing and challenging. For this, we are grateful and want to contribute in any way we can to help the school extend this opportunity to others that value the same type of education.

2016 – 17 GOAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program is one of a number of student scholarship organizations in the state of Georgia permitting Georgia state taxpayers and certain businesses to redirect a portion of their state income taxes to scholarships. Holy Spirit Prep partners with the Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program to provide scholarships to incoming students. Partnering with GOAL has allowed Holy Spirit Prep to admit incredible students who would otherwise not be able to afford the whole cost of tuition.

The state of Georgia caps total pledges to scholarship organizations at $58 million annually, and we support initiatives to raise that cap. The demand for scholarships is high. Last year, Georgia donors pledged over $117 million. The state of Georgia honored every donor’s pledge by prorating their pledge, accepting just 49.49% of their intended contribution. If you pledged $1,000, the state allowed you to contribute $495. We hope more families will continue to participate and increase their pledges, as that pro-rating is expected to continue. DONOR PROFILE

The Sipos Family What are some of the most important reasons you send your children to Holy Spirit Prep?

Why is it important to support HSP through the Annual Fund?

The most significant reason is because of our commitment to raising our children in the Catholic faith. We treasure HSP’s day-to-day teaching of faith and values, praying together, and putting our faith into action through service to others while offering an academically rigorous curriculum that’s complemented by opportunities to engage in athletics, art, music, etc.

The importance of gifts to HSP’s Annual Fund cannot be overstated: they provide more than four percent of the school’s operating costs each year. This support allows HSP to offer competitive salaries to its faculty, to provide need-based financial aid to deserving students, and to take advantage of other school improvement opportunities, like renovating the school cafeterias.

We would be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge the mutual love our children and faculty have for one another as well as the school’s appreciation for each individual soul and what they have to offer.

Annual gifts, whether large or small, have an impact. It’s our school’s fund and everyone who loves Holy Spirit Prep can contribute in a tangible way to strengthen and enrich it.

What is a memory of HSP that will stay with you forever? What have been some of your favorite moments here?

We all have God-given talents and gifts. Giving our time shows love and, hopefully, demonstrates that we (the parents) and the educators are a team. We have found that when we volunteer, we usually get more out of it than we put into it. It’s a great way to interact with other parents, spend time in the classroom, and to help our teachers. Plus, there’s nothing more fun to a kid than seeing a parent at school. It’s been our experience that HSP is a good steward of our time and resources.

Why do you donate your time and resources to HSP?

Without a doubt, the most meaningful experiences for us have centered around the preparation and the making of the Sacraments of First Penance and First Holy Communion. What makes these sacraments so special the first time is the same thing that makes it special every time, but witnessing your child(ren) enter fully into the heart of our faith is like no other experience. HSP has the best teachers, priests, and consecrated women to lead our children in their faith journey, and for that, we are grateful!

2016 – 17 SPRING GALA

The mission of Holy Spirit Prep succeeds in large part because of the excellent, committed work of our teachers, who are not only active practitioners in their respective fields, but deeply devoted to their students. We are committed to advancing the professional and personal development of our teachers — we know that their development means a better educational experience for our students. The principal fundraising event for this development is the Spring Gala. All of the proceeds from the Gala exclusively support our teachers in two ways: proceeds are equally divided between the Teachers’ Continuing Education Fund (TCEF) and the Teachers’ Children Tuition Assistance Fund (TCTAF). The TCEF supports the professional growth of teachers as they identify and pursue opportunities that will have the greatest impact on their practice, the academic lives of their students and on the HSP community. The TCTAF provides additional tuition assistance for the children of our teachers. This year’s community support for our teachers through the Spring Gala was record-breaking, raising more funds than we ever have for the teachers of HSP. We are grateful for the support we have received, recognizing it is a reflection of the impact our teachers have made on our students and their families. Michelangelo ($20,000+) Drs. The Cura Personalis Awards honors those teachers who have served at HSP for at least five years and who, in that time, have had a significant positive impact on students, parents, and colleagues, and supported HSP’s Catholic identity. Among a team of dedicated and passionate faculty, the three winners of this year’s award have demonstrated a consistent witness to the mission of HSP over their long tenure at HSP and well deserve the honor of being named the 2017 recipients of this award. FINANCIAL AID

Providing financial assistance is an important element of Holy Spirit Preparatory School’s mission as we seek to help those within our communion who cannot afford full tuition, but who are valuable members of our school. This assistance in turn benefits all students. As an independent Catholic school, Holy Spirit Prep does not have access to tuition assistance funding from the Archdiocese of Atlanta. We meet tuition assistance needs from donations, the Georgia GOAL Scholarship, and our operating income. As stewards of the finite pool of monies made available for tuition assistance, Holy Spirit Prep has to ensure that assistance is targeted to the families with the greatest need.

DONOR PROFILE

The Zurovchak Family What are some of the most important reasons you sent your children to Holy Spirit Prep?

Why is it important to support HSP through the Annual Fund?

Certainly, the academics, the extracurricular activities, and sports are excellent and fit our children so well. The small classes and the focused and personal help that teachers have given our children have been ideal.

We have always felt that education was one of the best ways to spend resources. An education stays with a child forever. It is something that he or she can build on for the rest of life.

The faith formation that undergirds and overarches the entire program is the primary reason we sent our children to HSP. We just dropped off our “baby” child at college. It is a time when parents flash back to all that has come before to get a child to this point. So many of those thoughts include times when our kids or another student have come to the “aha” moments: recognizing that their spiritual life is not separate, but an integrated part of the rest of their life. We certainly hope we have passed some of this to them, but it would have been nearly impossible without a school and people surrounding them that were encouraging them in the same ways. A program like HSP that “lights the way”— and the support of others in the HSP community — were critical to their formation.

Why do you donate your time and resources to HSP?

What is a memory of HSP that will stay with you forever? What have been some of your favorite moments here?

When we moved from out of state, everyone was so welcoming. When families opened their homes for holiday parties and end-of-sports-season parties, we were astonished. All of us enjoyed and valued that family atmosphere beyond the classroom. Teenagers actually wanted to spend time around the adults and include their younger siblings. This inviting attitude at HSP will stay with us always.

26

We moved to Atlanta when our children were in the Upper School. It seemed at that level there would be little place for parents to be involved. The parent involvement we saw, as well as the energy they had doing it, motivated us to get involved. We have enjoyed being involved as a team parent, announcer, and food-provider, among many other roles. It let us meet students, teachers, and other parents. All this different kind of participation was fun and rewarding. We always felt that HSP was appreciative of whatever ways parents can participate.

HOLY SPIRIT PREP DAILY PRAYER

We pray in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Thank you Lord for this day. Thank you for the blessings you give us. Thank you for making each one of us in your image. Thank you for the special blessing of our families. Help us to remember that you love us. Help us to remember that you have a special place in your heart for us. Help us to remember that our school is a communion of souls destined for joy. Help us to remember that this communion is unique and precious. Fill us with a faith that will accompany us. Fill us with a faith that will encourage us. Fill us with a faith that will inspire us. Fill us with a faith that will console us. Grant us magnanimity, a greatness of soul, so that all the other virtues we might seek to acquire will blossom. Grant us wisdom; and prudence, so that we may make good decisions for the rest of our lives. Grant us the development of heart, mind, body and soul such that we might excel in your plan for our lives. And grant that we may all seek communion with you and with one another. We ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
