Kids Who Are Angry Can Make Angry Decisions I am seeing an increasing number of kids who become angry with their parents and as a result, they cut off all contact. Professionals refer to his phenomenon as parental alienation. Whether I am working with seven-year-olds, 17-year-olds or 27-year-olds, I am noticing that children are choosing to divorce one of their parents. Children are making decisions that are angry and avoidant. They believe that they can decide how they are going to spend their lives based on their feelings about their family circumstance. In many situations, a child is mad at his parent for having divorced his mother or father or for having cheated on his parent. This child is watching the other parent be devastated and severely impacted by these decisions and consequently he/she takes it upon himself to not want anything to do with the other parent. It is normal to be angry, hurt, and to feel abandoned when a parent makes such a selfish choice, but it is not healthy for a child to alienate and divorce his parent. This decision will have many emotional consequences. Parental alienation gives a child too much power and control and teaches the child that they can dictate a relationship instead of working through it. Sometimes parental alienation occurs because children have been verbally abused by their parent and they have chosen to withdraw from them. When this has occurred, I set up a session so that the parent can hear what the child has to say and then make an amends for being too harsh or cruel. My experience is that most parents don’t want to verbally abuse their children but that they may lack the skills to relate differently. In these cases, I encourage the parent

to seek professional guidance to work on anger management. It is therapeutic for the child to feel heard and understood and see that conflict can breed a sense of intimacy when two people are willing to work on things. If a parent cannot empathize Carol Juergensen Sheets with the child and cannot make the proper amends it may not be safe for that child to have additional contact with that parent. Regardless, it's always helpful to work on making a relationship healthier as opposed to avoiding it altogether. If you have a situation where your child is devastated by the unhealthy decision of a parent, it would be extremely helpful to get that child in therapy to externalize those feelings and to teach that child how to assert his or herself with the parent that the child is excluding. When this hard work occurs the parent and the child can work on rebuilding a relationship. It can be a real opportunity for the child to learn relationship skills that the likely need to use in the future. And it is always healthy to find ways to vent anger and to give it a voice in a situation where a child feels abandoned. If you have a family member who has written off another person, it might be helpful for you to encourage them to work with a professional to see if there is an alternative to an already very dysfunctional situation. Being the other parent means that you have the power to encourage your child to work things out and you can practice healthy role modeling. Teaching children to be assertive as opposed to aggressive or avoidant teaches kids good conflict resolution skills. Encourage your child to share feelings without control.

Healing through Arts and Education Throughout COVID-19, Ascension St. Vincent has adapted and enhanced existing programs and services to ensure that patients and healthcare heroes are cared for in mind, body, and spirit. Here are highlights of the good work being completed by two programs thanks to donor support of the Ascension St. Vincent Foundation. The Healing Arts Program at Ascension St. Vincent is dedicated to promoting holistic healing through a combination of visual art, music and dance/movement interventions. The program has expanded its normal efforts to support healing throughout COVID-19. • Positivity Boards were introduced around the hospital to bring color, encouraging messages, and uplifting information to patient units. • A fun “Sneeze, Blow, and Throw” song was created to teach hospitalized children the ways to keep themselves and other people safe when they sneeze or cough. • Legacy Prints have been made to help comfort families who lost a loved one to COVID-19, including a digital thumbprint to be shared with family members as a lasting memory. In addition to helping patients, the Healing Arts Program also supports Ascension St. Vincent associates through activities that provide encouragement and stress relief. Along with spiritual care teams, the Healing Arts Program introduced a new “Code Lavender” protocol to provide focused support for associates when they have been involved in a stressful event at the hospital. Carts have been placed in units and include items such as art materials, aromatherapy, scripture, meditation guides, deep breathing exercises, and resources for virtual support. Another crucial program funded by the 14

supporters of the Ascension St. Vincent Foundation is the School Program at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at Ascension St. Vincent. This program addresses the educational needs of many patients who are missing time from school as a result of their hospitalization through an on-site school program. The comprehensive assistance provided by the school program helps provide a sense of stability to patients as they battle their respective health issues. The ultimate goal is for all patients who require educational instruction or assistance during their hospitalization to successfully re-acclimate to their home schools with minimal difficulty. When COVID-19 shut down schools in the spring, Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital’s licensed teacher, Heather Wiselogle, began to teach remotely, using tools like Zoom and Skype. She developed creative ways to engage students and continued seeing as many students online as she was seeing in person. Through the Paws to Read program, students were able to read their favorite books to therapy dogs virtually. Heather also helped some high school seniors as they were dealing with the challenges of both online learning and their own health conditions during their final semester. She wrote letters of recommendation for scholarships and assisted with requests for accommodations for college. Funding of programs like Healing Arts and the School Program is crucial in supporting the needs of our patients and healthcare heroes.
